The city was abuzz with excitement as Katelyn and her patron wound their down the castle's halls to the ground floor, then outside into open air. Syliras' main gates were more congested than usual, and an impressive crowd had gathered in a cleared area where some fascinating visitors were trading their exotic wares. Kate's heart fluttered in her chest when she saw their massive mounts preening and observing the crowd with large, keen eyes. She'd never dreamed of ever really seeing a Wind Eagle in the flesh. The squire shielded her eyes as her patron led the way through the throng, clearing a path for the two of them so they might squeeze closer.

The mage never missed a chance to trade with the Inartan riders during their rare visits, and hadn't hesitated to bring his squire along.

"They're enormous," the redhead breathed in wonder, and Ser Moore smiled crookedly at her. "I never could have imagined." The riders never came to the Mithryn Outpost, and Katelyn had never been in the city during their visits. She'd heard a tale or two from her brothers, but never really believed them for some reason. Yet everything they'd said was true. Unable to contain herself, Kate started to squeeze through the crowd ahead of her patron, impatient and eager to get closer. The crowd grew dense near the front, and she was jostled quite a bit by the time she made it close enough to stop.

A few chimes later her patron's hand touched her shoulder, and she nodded to him when he motioned he was going to talk to one of the men flashing their wares. Katelyn's head was tipped back, and both hands cupped her brow to shade them from the glare of the sun. The closest eagle towered over the crowd, and its head tilted rapidly as it watched the milling people. His beak--she was just assuming it was a he--hung open slightly as if he were panting, and his breast expanded with quick, mighty breaths. A second eagle suddenly spread its wide wings, fluttering them with a loud snap of muscle and feather before settling again. When she gasped, one of the riders turned and smiled at her obvious awe.

He motioned for her to come forward, and Kate's eyes swelled with fright. She shook her head erratically, trying to move back a little deeper into the crowd, but bodies tightly blocked her retreat. The wild haired redhead stepped forward and motioned again, beckoning eagerly.

"Come, I will show," he said in accented Common.

She hesitated for a long moment, but finally mustered the courage to squeeze past the men and women in front of her. As soon as she popped out in the open, the nearby eagle leveled her with an intelligent, intimidating stare. Katelyn froze in place, teeth gritted and body taught as a drawn bowstring. The young Inartan man smiled a little wider and came to retrieve her, leading her to his table with a comforting hand on her back. She watched the massive raptor the whole way, and it watched her right back.

"You Inarta?" he asked, motioning to her hair. Katelyn grabbed a lock and examined it, finally smiling a little.

"My grandmother on my mother's side. She moved to Zeltiva and married an artist when she was younger than I."

He nodded thoughtfully and rubbed his chin, then picked up a small, delicate pot and held it out to her. She took it carefully and opened the lid. Inside was some kind of cream, and she sniffed it experimentally. It smelled like fresh honeysuckle. Katelyn looked at the trader curiously.

"Woman's lotion," he explained, and she frowned. "No?" The squire shook her head and handed the small pot back to him. He stuck the lid back on and placed it on the table. "What things you like?" For some reason, the question struck her totally silent. She looked at his artfully arranged table--all the jars of creams, glass jewelry displayed proudly, and several garments folded in neat piles. It was all beautiful, and she could tell the craftsmanship was expert, but nothing popped out at her.

"I'm not very... girly," Kate explained slowly, embarrassed to admit it. She never wore jewelry because she was afraid of breaking it or losing it. Plus, there were more important things she could spend her money on--like food. The squire was much more likely to spend a lot of gold on a big meal than gold or silver or glass baubles. As for clothes, she had nothing fancy. Most of what she wore she'd had for several years now, and had it patched up when it was needed. She'd always had an abundance of hard work, so silks and dresses were pretty unnecessary.

As her eyes scanned the table once more, in her peripheral vision she saw the Inartan shift his weight and rest his hand on the pommel of a sword strapped to his waist. Her gaze followed the movement automatically, and the glint of the strange glass hilt held her attention. He noticed her curiosity and smiled, then drew the weapon from its scabbard and held it carefully in both hands to show her. It was an amazing looking thing. The beautiful hilt had a fractal effect as sunlight filtered through, and the gently curved blade gleamed with a deathly sharp edge. It was beautiful--she'd never seen a more fascinating weapon.

Swords had never really appealed to her, but right now, she was struck silent. The Inartan regarded with a knowing stare, and slowly re-sheathed his weapon.

"Talon sword," he explained, and she looked at him with an almost apologetic shyness.

"It's beautiful," Kate said, and when he smiled so did she.

"Katelyn," her patron suddenly chimed from behind her, and the redhead turned to see him holding a new journal. "Did you see anything that caught your eye?" She smiled awkwardly and glanced back at the trader, then at his sword.

"Kind of," the squire drawled, then shrugged. "Nothing for sale though. That's usually how it works," she joked, and the mage regarded the Inartan thoughtfully.

"Yes, it does seem to happen that way sometimes. But there is a young woman selling some leather goods, and I think you might like some things. Care to come look?" Katelyn nodded, gave the Inartan man an awkward wave that he returned kindly, and followed her patron to another nearby table.

The woman's leather wares were beautiful. Her patron had been correct to assume they would draw Kate's attention. She had several beautiful journals, quivers, bow cases, bracers, and a little bit of everything else in between. The squire picked up one of the cases and turned it over in her hands. It was more of a quiver really, made to attach to a saddle and hold a strung longbow. It had extra straps to in turn carry a quiver. Kate smiled and looked at the woman who was watching her as intently as the eagle from earlier.

"How much?"

"Twenty-five," the woman said without hesitation, and also no accent, she noticed. Katelyn frowned and turned the piece over in her hands again. She could practically feel her mizas burning a hole in the pouch on her belt. The squire had counted her money carefully before coming out here, and had plenty to buy pretty much anything that might catch her eye.

"Will you take twenty?" Katelyn offered back.

The Inartan shook her head and folded her arms. Again the solid number of twenty-five was put down, and it was Kate's turn to shake her head.

"Twenty-three?" It was a matter of stubbornness now, haggling with the foreigner. Two gold wasn't going to really make a difference. When the trader turned the offer down again, Katelyn sat the case back on the table.

No one was going to win. Instead, she picked up a simple looking leather journal. Despite a lack of any tooling or intricate details, it had caught her eye. She flipped it open and felt the pages. They were smooth and cool the touch, and had that wonderful parchment smell she loved so much. Katelyn looked at the woman and held up the journal, a question etched onto her face.

"Five," she said, and Kate fished out the appropriate number of gold-rimmed mizas.

"Deal," the squire said, handing the money to the red haired woman. "What about this one?" she asked next, picking up a braided leather bracelet. This was more her kind of "jewelry". Tough yet attractive. Leather had always been her favorite anyway.

"That one, three mizas," the trader said slowly, as if not totally sure, but then she nodded. "Three."

"Okay," Katelyn agreed again. "That's fair." She passed over the money and looked at her new items with a smile on her face. When she turned to wander off to another stall, the woman spoke up quickly. Kate half-turned to look at her, and saw that she was holding the case.

"Twenty-three," she relented, holding it out to the squire, who smiled a little wider. Katelyn was rather proud of her success as she handed the Inartan the rest of the gold pieces, and took her new bow scabbard excitedly.

"Thank you," she said happily, and the foreigner smiled despite her haggling loss.

Katelyn was quickly sucked into the pull of the next closest table. The first thing she saw were arrows, and her interest was instantly piqued. As she stepped up to examine the wares, a few other people browsing shuffled over to make room. The Inartan man tending his wares here smiled, and she tried not to stare at the elaborate tattoo and piercings on his face.

He was peddling several bows and all manner of arrows, including heads and unfinished shafts with nothing more than fletching. She smiled and picked up on the half-finished arrows. It was light and smooth in her fingers--perfectly straight with beautiful, crisp, white feathers on the end. When she sat it down the trader spoke up, his voice Common thick with an accent.

"Shoot bow?"

Katelyn smiled, embarrassed. "Only a little," she said, emphasizing with her hands to a tiny gap. She didn't know how much he understood, but he nodded and looked at the bows laying on his table.

"Long? Short?"

"Longbow," she explained, and drew the shape of it through the air with her hands. "Composite. Recurve."

"Ah! Yes, yes," the Inartan exclaimed, smiling happily. He turned and plucked an unstrung weapon from a barrel behind him--overstock she assumed for when people purchased what was on the table. He had quite a few back there, and wondered how many he had already sold. With expert ease the trader strung the bow with one of the many strings curled on the table. It's powerful limbs bent across his shoulders and around his calf, and she was amazed to see how easy he did it. Like a toy.

When he handed it to her she took it, a little surprised by his eager excitement. Katelyn stepped back to give herself more room and held the bow aloft in her hands. As her eyes drank in the beautiful weapon, her mouth opened in appreciative awe. The squire was no expert, but she could tell this was a fine piece of craftsmanship. She had no idea what it was made of, but the longbow was lightweight, the wood dark, and there was what appeared to be some kind of bone in the handle that was wrapped with soft leather. She was practically salivating over it, and when she looked back at the Inartan he was regarding her with a smile.

"Yew and whale bone," he explained, and she pointed to two strangle leather tabs woven onto the string.

"What are these?" she asked.

"For silence," he said simply. "Eat noise." It was a good enough explanation for her, and probably all she was going to get.

"How much?"

"One twenty-five," he said with without blinking an eye, and Katelyn went silent for a moment. She didn't want to give it back. The bow felt like it had adhered itself to her fingers, and after a moment of internal struggle the squire felt herself relent.

"Done." Oh Gods, that's a lot of money. She felt a little sick to her stomach when she handed him the mizas, but didn't have the heart to try and lowball him on such a beautiful piece of weaponry. Katelyn ended up buying three extra strings as well, and by the end of all her shopping purchased a leather jerkin from another stand. When she found her patron again he was talking with the first Inartan she'd spoken with--the one with the beautiful blade. She stood back and watched them speak, both using animated hand gestures. Before they parted Ser Moore handed him a folded piece of paper and a small pouch, then they shook hands and were done.

He turned to see her watching and smiled devilishly, and when she urged him to speak with a curious stare, he simply shrugged.

"What do you think of everything?" he asked as he joined her, examining her purchases with poorly suppressed mirth.

"What does it look like?" she retorted, trying for sarcasm but simply smiling and laughing instead. "I have considerably less mizas now. I must have a weakness for shopping I didn't know existed." But oh, she knew it had existed. Katelyn was notorious in the family for spending money just for the sake of spending it. It had gotten her in trouble a few years ago, and she'd battled the issue until it seemed to not be one any longer. There must have been some residual urges left over. The squire promised herself firmly right then that these were rare circumstances. It wasn't every day you could buy Inartan-made goods fresh off the backs of Wind Eagles. Speaking of which...

Ser Moore followed his squire as she wandered back to the eagles standing tall and imposing in a group by their riders. He didn't seem nearly as amazed as she did, but Katelyn assumed he'd simply seen them before. When she stopped several cautious yards away, the smallest turned its head and leveled her with a keen glare. Despite being the tiniest of the group it was still considerably large, and when it shuffled toward her on awkward bird legs she tried to back away. Her patron stopped her with a hand on her shoulder and the squire stood rooted in the spot, staring up at the looming raptor.

It leaned to their level, beak only a yard away from her face. Katelyn's eyes were round as saucers and her heart was pounding erratically in her chest. She was afraid her ribs might break with the ferocity of its galloping.

"Hold her hand up," Ser Moore instructed casually, and Katelyn looked at him sharply.

"What?" she hissed, then realizing she'd taken her eyes off the bird snapped her attention back to the massive predator.

"Come on, here I'll show you," the mage encouraged. Grabbing her wrist, he lifted her hand up toward the Wind Eagle's face. To try and ease her discomfort, he also lifted his other hand as well, offering their palms. When the giant bird learned in closer, Kate closed her eyes tightly. Suddenly, a puff of hot breath caressed her skin. The moisture of it startled her, and when she opened her eyes nervously she saw the bird keenly examining their hands, beak open as if breathed on them.

In her surprise and wonderment she suddenly smiled, and the raptor glanced at her with its giant golden eyes. They swam with a warm glow, and goosebumps rose along her arms. There was no doubting the intelligence she saw in them, and the intensity of the eagle's gaze unnerved her. It felt like a lifetime before her patron released her and the bird stood up again to waddle back to its flock. Katelyn released a heavy sigh as it retreated, and felt her shoulders sack. Her body was trembling from adrenaline, and her head buzzed.

"Amazing, aren't they?"

Katelyn nodded mutely, but found herself smiling.

"Yeah, they really are."

I always enjoy your threads. Even though this was just a simple purchasing thread you really showed the wonder and awe regarding the Wind Eagles. I secretly hope that the plot importance is that Katelyn will one day learn to ride a Wind Eagle. There wasn’t too much to award, but I tried to find what I could.
