To Make a Pomade Part 3

Torrential rain greeted Savacea that morning when she woke up. She was not really excited to have to walk through the down pour, so she waited in the common area of the Dormitories waiting for it to slack back a little. Though the weather did not seem relenting as the rain continued to gush from the sky, and she was already late to work as it was. She could only hope Tokia would be lenient due to the weather, but she had a feeling people of Black Rock was used to such weather, and it was no excuse.

With that in mind she walked to the door that would lead to her soaked demise. She briefly placed her hand on the door to open it, letting it linger there as she battled inside herself about getting wet or waiting and being terribly late. Getting to work though won out, as she pushed the door open. A large gust of wind carried the rain and hit her in the face. The drops felt like the stinging of insects as they battered her face, she ducked her head and pushed through, closing the door behind her. Briefly looking up she noticed that it was difficult to see the path before her. The rain came down in thick sheets, fog seemed to rise from the slight mountainous road, the summer sun was blotted out by menacing dark clouds. The aroma of earth wafted to her nose from the moist wind, with the lingering sweet and pungent scent that the rain brought up from the ground. Savacea scrunched up her stern nose at the aroma's, keeping her head held down and pushing through the rain, wrapping her elongated arms around her small frame.

The journey to Tokia Tonics lasted longer then she really thought it would, putting her in a dyspeptic frame of mind. She was already late from trying to wait out the monsoon of rain, then having to walk slowly and carefully through the copious downfall, made her that much more late. Savacea gritted her teeth as she opened the door to the shop, quickly shutting it behind her before too much of the cloudburst could enter Tokia's hodgepodge shop. The raven haired girl stood there for a moment, as the moisture dripped rapidly down her body, pooling at her feet as she was soaked to the bone. She rubbed her arms slightly as a chill entered her body, it was summer time and the heat was there, but it was not as hot as one would think and with the rain it brought a chill to the bones. Savaea brought her clawed hands up, brushing back the hair that was soaked and stuck to her face, back and out of the way. She heard a clearing of a throat and she turned her head to see Tokia standing there with her arms crossed. She had a vexed look upon her face, as the tip of her foot slowly patted at the floor. The woman was in her forties but appeared to be a very fit and capable thirty year old. Savaea gave her a small smile hoping to ease the anger from her face. This of course did not work, as the Myrian approached her, looking down at the puddle of water then back up to her eyes.

“What the petch took you so long?” She asked in a disgruntled tone, looking expectantly for a wonderful answer to her question. Savacea opened her mouth, then she closed it. She repeated this a few times before giving a loud exhale of breath. There was no use of trying to come up with an excuse for her belated arrival, she knew the truth was the best wasy to go.

“Honestly I have no excuse for you. I was waiting for the rain to slack up, but it did seem that it would cease, so I walked in the monsoon but that also was a time consuming endeavor. I apologize.” The Symenestra's tone was full of angst, hoping the Myrian would not fire her or punish her too harshly. She knew she had been foolish to think that she could wait out the storm, even more foolish for not leaving earlier.

The Myrian looked her up and down, taking in her dripping body and how her arms were wrapped around her small frame, a brief look of pity crossed her features but quickly disappeared as the irritated look came back to her face. She tsked loudly shaking her head, “Why are you standing there soaking my floor!? Get on with you, go to the back and stand before the hearth to dry up. Can't have you flooding my shop.” The woman chided her, shooing her away with the gesture of both of her hands, as she went to clean up the puddle that was larger now from Savacea standing there.

Savacea nodded her head, a bit afraid to say anything else, as she hurried to the back and stood before the hearth. The warmth flickered from the flames, wrapping her in a cozy embrace banishing the chill from her bones. She stood there for a good fifteen minutes and was longer as soaked as she was. She turned to her back to let her hair and the back end dry a little, as she gathered her thick tresses in both hands and lifting them up, and spreading them out on her back so they could dry faster.

Assitance On Herbs

After standing there for a few more minutes, Tokia came forth with a less vexed look then before, “So that Pomade you made..” the Myrian trailed off taking Savacea in with her wise eyes.

“Yes... What about it?” Savacea asked urging her on, so she could find out what the woman had to say.

“Well.. I checked on it and if you ask me I think it is a little too hard. Maybe use less beeswax and more oil the next time.” The woman paused for a moment, a thoughtful look spreading across her face faintly tapping her delicate chin with a finger, “I can still sell the stuff, but I think customers would much prefer a smoother consistency so it would spread easier on their lips.”

“Hmmm.. Okay I will try that then. Perhaps I should try adding some other herbs to the mixture, what would be your suggestion?” Savacea walked to the work table, running her hand over the smooth surface. Her face held curiosity as she wondered what other herbs could be used in the pomade to provide more healing to the wearers lips when they were chapped in the winter and even summer season.

Tokia took a moment to answer, as she was rattling her brain for a sufficient answer to give Savacea. When the knowledge was grasped inside her mind, she brought it forward, “Well Vyfox and Tolm are good remedial herbs to use, Wraiths Mint is great for the relaxation and to give a scent to the pomade that is pleasant. Perhaps using Jile too would be beneficial. The herb is used to treat skin conditions, a healing pomade is used to soothe chapped lips would could be similar to a skin condition, so that could help.” The Myrian paused for a moment, then looked around finally coming to rest her eyes on Savacea, “Although I will have to check and see if I have any Jile in stock, as it is not common in this area. I will go up front and see if I have anything that could assist in the Pomade, you should go ahead and get started on making a better batch while I am doing that.” Tokia said this with finality as she existed the work space so Savacea could get started once more on perfecting her Pomade.

Preparing The Ingredients..

Savacea gathered the ingredients once more to make a Lip Pomade Balm. Grabbing the Coconut Oil, Beeswax, a couple of bowls, two pots, a couple of spoons, a cheesecloth, and some gloves. Sitting all of it in an organized way on the table, she put on her gloves to begin working. Grating the Beeswax over one of the bowls she paused, thinking back to what Tokia had said about using less of the Beeswax. So instead of grating a half cup she only did a fourth this time, sitting the bowl to the side. Measuring out two cups of Coconut oil instead of just one, she placed that inside the pot to prep for boiling and sit it to the side.

Once she was done with the prepartions Tokia returned with a red flowering plant in her hands, "I do not have any Jile, but I do have this. It is found in the jungles and is called Fire Bush. The people use it in many ways, though topically it can be applied for pain, inflammation, healing, and skin problems. So I think the leaves off of this bush could help in the balm." She paused for a moment, then supplied, "You should boil the Coconut oil, pour it over the leaves in a dry air tight jar, leave it for a few hours to make the Fire Bush leaves into a oil." The Myrian woman handed her the bunches of leaves then left her to her work.

Savacea peered down at the leaves with a thoughtful expression, "Perhaps if I added some Wraiths Mint into the jar with the Fire Bush leaves, the oil will have the aroma of mint and provide the relaxation and healing qualities of the Fire Bush." With that idea, she quickly placed the Coconut Oil on the heating element, to let it come to a boil. Then she shoved the leaves inside a dry large jar, poking in six Wraiths Mint leaves as well. When the Coconut Oil was slowly boiling she removed it and poured it over the plants, poking them with one of the spoons as she gently poured the hot oil over them to cover all the leaves of the Fire Bush and Wraiths Mint. Once this was done she quickly put the lid on the jar and twisted tightly to seal it. Now she needed to wait for a few hours, so she went up front to busy herself with some work while she waited for it to be done.

Making the Pomade

After the a few hours had passed Savacea went back to the work space and looked at the jar. The oil had turned into a dense green color, which meant the oil was properly infused now. She twisted the lid harder then normal, since she secured it so tightly, and opened the jar. Grabbing the cheese cloth she secured it tightly around a bowl and grabbed a spoon and began scooping out the contents of the jar. Once the herbs were strained and the oil was collected in the bowl, she untied the cheesecloth. Giving the pulp a squeeze to get the rest of the oil out, she then tossed it away.

Returning to the green oil, she poured it over the finely grated Beeswax and stirred slightly to cover it all in the oil. Pouring the contents in a small pot, she placed it over the heating element to begin to slowly melt it into the oil. While waiting on the Beeswax to melt, she brought her Herbalism book out of her pack to read some more about Herbs in Mizahar. Turning it to the 10th page she began to read.

Hommos

"Hommos is a short, shrub-like herb with a strong woodsy stalk. It grows straight and tall and has lance-shaped leaves with blue flowers. The herb flowers in summer with a dozen or more blossoms. The flowers are often used in infusions of tea to help with stomach pain or as gargles to sooth sore throats. They can even be soaked in baths to help body aches and pains. An herb of many uses, the flowers and roots can be boiled to make deep blue dye or dried for incense. As far as preparation, Hommos is tied in bunches and dried immediately after midsummer. The leaves are usually just dried through macerating them in oil. Its blossoms and leaves are often macerated into an oil to create a dark purple oil that can be burned as a lamp oil. Hommos is common and found in Temperate locations, it is Perennial."

Savacea paused after reading about Hommos, thinking about how dye was made from the flowers and roots. She found it quite intriguing that a dye could be made from a plant. Seeds of the Tivcore were made into Ink on Black Rock, but dye was quite fascinating. It also had a lot of uses, though she doubted she would be able to find any here on Black Rock as it was in Temperate Locations. That was too bad, she wanted to make a dark purple oil and see if she could burn it in a lamp. She gave a soft sigh and continued reading her book.

Lidgefar

" Lidgefar grows up to three feet tall with tiny oblong leaves and pink to purple blossoms present through the summer that lead to flattened black seeds by autumn. Lidgefar flowers are abundant and attractive enough that they are often used for decoration. The flowers and seeds are also used in a variety of forms to aid in helping blood clot thus serving well in treating wounds. It is uncommon and can be found in Temperate Fields, you can harvest this plant Annually."

"Hmm.. Blood clots huh." Savacea thought to herself as she was reading the description. Lidgefar did not have as many uses as the Hommos plant, but it did sound to be quite attractive since the flowers were used as decorations. The healing aspects of the plant were useful, although it was another plant that she would never find or see on Black Rock, which was disappointing as it sounded to be quite beautiful.

Savacea sat her book down and rose to check on the Beeswax. Sticking a wooden spoon inside she stirred slightly, as the Beeswax had melted and the Oil and the wax were not blended. She removed the pot off of the heating element, sitting it down on a towel on the table to cool off for a moment. While it was cooling she busied herself with cleaning up her mess and placing everything back on the shelf where it came from. Once she was done cleaning she came back and poured the mixture in a medium sized jar, capping it with the lid and twisting tightly. Sitting the Pomade to the side, she placed her book back into the pack and headed out front.

"I am done with the Pomade, is there anything else you need done?" Tokia looked up from her plant she was watering and gave Savacea a nod, "Clean up the shop a bit and then you can leave." Savacea smiled and nodded and began to clean the shop. Once she was finished she would leave and go to where she stayed to rest. Impatiently waiting to see how the Pomade turned out this time around.
