42nd Winter 515AV

Jillene Ironside’s breath floated before her, an unpleasant reminder of the bitter coldness that gripped her home city. But what was even worse than the iciness outside was the almost equally cold chill that was running riot throughout her orphanage. Almost all of the children were bundled with extra layers of clothes during the day and thick blankets at night, but still little teeth chattered and little bodies shivered uncontrollably.

Something needed to be done. Walls and ceilings needed to be patched up, clothes needed to be mended, extra blankets needed making. Perhaps even more importantly: the children’ spirits needed to be improved. Some were ill from the cold, with nasty coughs and sniffles, whereas others simply needed a distraction for the day whilst their digs were improved. All in all, every aspect of the orphanage required some work and dedication, even in the kitchens where the children were growing bored with the same warming recipes of soup and stew.

And so Jillene had opened up her orphanage to the good people of Sunberth. Over the past few days, she had spread word that any and all efforts would be appreciated by her young charges. Though she was blind, she believed herself a good judge of character and the matron of the orphanage was not shy to turf out an individual if she she believed they had less than honourable intentions.

Sighing, Jillene prepared herself for a long day. The orphanage would be even more hectic and busy already, and the few volunteers who had arrived early were already scrubbing floors or kissing better scraped knees. She could only hope that more people would arrive, and that her trust placed in Sunberth had not been a mistake.

Those of you who would like to offer their support to the orphanage, please post here first. I will then reply to you with Jillene pointing you in the right direction. At this point, please feel free to create your own solo threads or, even better, work together to fix up the orphanage.

He stood for a moment watching Jilene look out into the horizon. He knew she was worried. Even though she was blind and had a heart of pure stone, he had been here well over long enough to know when she was worried. He thought about going over to talk to her, he knew why she was worried. Even though this winter was better than last years, the orphanage still had no help which made every winter a bad one here. Other than himself, Jilene and those that volunteered, there was no help for those that really needed it. Maybe she needed this time alone to think and get some air, it had been pretty stressful with children always following both he and she around begging for food, warmth, and clothing.

The sound of a small sneeze caught his ears leading him around to a small child who was too dirty to call a gender. The child wore ragged clothes and had no shoes. Lo'campo's brow frowned at the sight of the poor child. "Here ya go." he spoke as he handed one of the blankets he was carrying to the shivering young one. He took a look around at all the children. Some huddled together in corners trying stay warm, others were fighting for their dear lives, even some of the more healthy ones looked as if all life had been drained from them. A sigh escaped his mouth as he stood up and made his way over to Jilene. "I found some spare blankets that were laying around. Not many but some...Any luck with finding anymore help?" He asked already knowing the answer. By the looks of things he would be digging graves and placing bodies.

L'orlei had been staying in the Sunset Quarters for some time now, and had always pitied the poor children at the orphanage. Though she tried to offer assistance when she could, her life was usually busy just trying to scrape by in the unfamiliar city. There was so much about Sunberth that she still did not understand, and trying to help children when they already had someone to help wasn't always an option.

When L'orlei heard Jillene was actually asking for help, her mind changed. It is one thing to not help someone who isn't asking for it. Some people, she'd learned, did not like receiving help unasked for, no matter how innocent the offer. But Jillene was asking for it, and there were sick children in need. That was not something L'orlei could ignore.

L'orlei woke that morning and gathered all her healing herbs together, putting them in her pack, and then made her way over to the orphanage side of the Sunset Quarters to seek out Jillene. She'd only spoken to the woman a handful of times, mostly to pay her rent, and was a bit nervous, but she always felt that way when meeting new people, though, that was a recent thing for her. Back home she had no problem walking up to someone and calling them by name, even if she had never met them before. Her gift allowed her to do that, but in Sunberth, people did not like strangers, and they especially did not like strangers who mysteriously knew their name.

L'orlei spotted Jillene and waved before making her way over, smiling to the children as she passed. "Jillene. I wanted to offer to help out with the children. I know some of them are sick, and I have training and herbs that could help." She left out the bit about her magical power, though she would likely be using that far more than any herbs.

Lo’Campo

The sneeze also caught Jillene’s attention, and she turned towards it with an expression creased in worry and guilt. It was her job to care for these children, and though she could hardly control the climate or indeed the raging structure in which her orphanage existed, the woman still found heaps of self-blame in the current situation.

She took a step towards where the sneeze had come from, but her steps fell short. “Lo’Campo.” The blind woman said, even before the Akalak had spoken to the child. There was something about the monumental size of his racial build that even a blind woman could not miss. His steps, his breath, exuberated size and strength.

When the child had scurried away, and Jilene was satisfied that his tiny footsteps had carried him away, her tired smile dropped. Though revealing her honest thoughts to staff was far from easy, she always did her best to ensure that none of the children overheard her pessimism or concerns. “Not yet, no.” She said in reply to his question. An exhausted sigh escaped from her lips and Jilene placed a hand towards the male for support, both physical and mental. It landed on his forearm. “Lo’Campo, do what you can. You already do so much, and I hate to ask, but if there’s anything you can do…”

Her tiny voice trailed off, and Jillene forced another weary smirk onto her mouth before shuffling away from the Akalak. Though she knew one of his more common jobs was grave digging, she prayed that, for at least today, that service would not be needed.

L’orlei

It seemed the wait for help would not be long. Within half a bell of speaking with Lo’Campo, Jilene heard a pair of unfamiliar steps coming her way. They belonged to a woman, who subsequently offered her services as a healer; an art form that would be appreciated by both the warden and her charges. Smiling, Jilene dipped her head in a thankful manner. “Anything you do to elevate their ailments would be appreciated in the greatest way possible.” She said sagely.

The woman extended a hand, somehow gesturing to L’orlei to exit out of a door that stood to the lefthand side of the room they currently stood in. “If you exit through there, and go through the third door on the left, you’ll find the ward where our sickest children are.” In truth, the room was no more a medical ward than it was a luxury spa. Two rows of five beds lined opposing walls, and each bed housed a child who was grubby and thin. All children in the so called ward were either worryingly pale, sneezing, vomiting, or unconscious (or, Gods forbid, a combination of all three).

Lo'campo stood and watched as his Jilene spoke softly and looked around with an expression of utter sadness upon her face. He wished that there was something that he could do to cheer her day up. He didn't mind that he had extra work to do, this place kinda grew on him over the time span of him living here. It was his job to look after the place and that was what he was going to do. He watched her for a moment after her words had trailed off, thinking of something he could say to lighten her spirits when someone else had come from the corner of his eye to do just the deed for him.

At first glance, he could have sworn that it was his sister that had walked up upon them, before realizing the details that had differed between the women standing in front of him and his deceased sister. All in all though it was a Konti who was providing medical services. A grunt in approval came from his body as he stood straight up to properly introduce himself when he got the chance to. This was a good thing in his book. He stood and watched as the woman and Jilene conversed about what could be done to help, and then followed the two into the makeshift infirmary where the sickly children lay. The room wasn't a pretty sight for most to see. Rows of beds on each side of the room filled with children who lay with fever and other illnesses. While the two women talked, the akalak did a quick check of the room, making sure each child was ok and having one of the other children fetch things such as water, or pieces of cloth to wipe sweat from their brow. He had never taken care of anyone before, but if it was anything like helping a wounded warrior then that would be the best that he could do. Wipe their brow, give them something to drink, and tell them that all would be ok. Even he knew that it was a load of lies, but the best he could do was comfort them through the worst.

Standing up from one of the children that looked as if he were about to go soon. He walked back over to Jilene and the new Konti woman who had offered her skills. "Is there anything that I can do that could help?" He asked looking at the two for an answer. He didn't like this, he felt weak and helpless. He was a warrior, he had fought many man, and beast alike, he had killed people in cold blood, yet he couldn't save a child from a fever, and didn't even know the first thing about medicine and healing. At this point he was just as strong as a leaf in the wind, but he still had his strength to offer if that would help any.
