A word here and there of Pavi entered Kaitanu’s mind and stayed, but not until Dravite spoke to him in Common did he have any real idea of what was wanted. Even then there was the usual sorting through the few words for meaning. Dravite’s gestures added some context, but on the whole Kaitanu wasn’t sure he quite understood. Dravite’s loose sketch of the plan made things as clear as they could be under the circumstances, but Kaitanu didn’t think much of his own chances. Even if the kelvic followed everything to the letter, there were too many variables to account for, and too many ways to fail spectacularly. That thought frightened him, as he believed he would be blamed for an unsuccessful hunt if he wasn’t killed in the process. This was not an unfair assumption, given his life experience. The kelvic had suffered more than one beating as a scapegoat. However, as he had no real choice in the matter, Kaitanu merely bowed his head in the ankal’s direction.

“I hear and obey.”

Sliding off of Cree’s back and stripping off his clothes, Kaitanu folded them and placed them carefully in the knapsack Dravite had bought for him. This was handed over to the ankal, at which point he stood back and shifted. Kaitanu felt genuine relief to be in horse form, and not merely because the chill morning air had turned his body to one large chunk of gooseflesh. Cree’s reaction to the plan, when Kaitanu explained it to him in their language, was so confident that the pale horse kelvic thought better of it. Not that Dravite could come up with a poor strategy, but Kaitanu had doubted his own part. He was more willing to believe encouragement from the stallion than the man.

Cree and Kaitanu trotted off toward the lake, keeping their posture and attitudes as calm as possible. For the kelvic this came naturally; for Cree it was a matter of experience. Spooking the herd too early would ruin Dravite’s plan. As it was, the elder bison of the herd were eyeing their approach with caution, but as they were only horses it would be assumed that Cree and Kaitanu had just come to drink or to graze. That was what both horses were counting on. As they slowly circled the herd, Kaitanu bade Cree- with an exceedingly polite tone -to slow his pace so he fell to the back of the herd. It was a strange thing for the meek kelvic to be giving orders, but then again he had done business for his previous masters. This was roughly the same thing. Knowing the orders came from Dravite, Cree made no argument and the two horses parted.

To Kaitanu’s further relief, their movements went largely unnoticed by the herd of huge, shaggy, grazing behemoths. Until the last few moments he hadn’t realized just how massive these beasts were. The kelvic was not fooled by their size into thinking they wouldn’t be able to outstrip him if they wished. He wasn’t even sure how fast he could run himself. Had he ever raced before? Or gone full-tilt until he was flying? Kaitanu had heard of such things, but couldn’t remember feeling them himself. No…no, that was wrong. He had once. Almost, he could recall frozen wind filling his nostrils, and fear nipping at his heels. That thought forced Kaitanu to slow to a walk and stop near the middle of the herd, rather than taking off at once. His gaze turned back to the half-hidden figures of Lian and Dravite on their mounts, waiting for him to act out his part. Whether he was swift enough to keep from being trampled by bison didn’t matter. If he was, there would be only one way to find out.

Keeping one eye on the herd, and the other on the path ahead, Kaitanu bent down as though going for a mouthful of grass. In reality, he was trying to think of the best way to get the herd to scatter in a planned direction without the huge beasts turning on him. That meant recalling what little he could of his time alone on the plains. Surprisingly, an idea came to his almost at once. Kaitanu might not know much of his own kind, and still less of bison, but one thing he understood intimately; fear. Little wonder the notion occurred to him. That very feeling simmered under his calm demeanor almost constantly. It was not so different for herd animals. Their lives were continually on the edge of danger. For probably the first time in his life, the kelvic was going to use that fear against others, even as it propelled him to action.

Just as the bison were certain that he wasn’t going to bother them, the kelvic’s head suddenly shot up, ears forward, eyes scanning the endless sea of grass as if he had spotted a predator. Kaitanu recalled the herd he had followed before Dravite took him in, and how the stallion had reacted to danger. He mimicked this behavior, blowing sharply through his nostrils and pawing the earth, then bursting into a gallop as though there was something behind him. On seeing this, the bison were suddenly thrown into a panic. Kaitanu ran beside them, barely needing to force their path. With bloodshot eyes rolling and mouths agape, they swelled ahead in a great, dark cloud, some kicking up dust behind, others leaping into the shallow end of the lake or across the river. Not one stopped to look back and see that there was nothing behind them but another horse. Nor did they see the two men on their mounts galloping toward them until it was too late to turn around en masse.

Kaitanu knew the men were coming, but he had not realized that the opposite end of the herd had already been thrown into confusion by Lian’s attack. He had not understood that the men would shoot first and, as usual, had to improvise. Asking for clarification to a master’s orders could bring punishment, so often it was better to think on one’s feet and hope for the best. In any case, the plan was working more or less as it should. Enormous bodies plunged one by one through the water, crying out with fear. Cree drove through them, splitting the herd, and Kaitanu hedged their way, plunging into the water with no more fear than on land. Though he could not remember his time in Ravok, at least he had learned a few good things. His presence in the water kept the bison from crossing the other way. In spite of the wounded beast among them their terror-blinded minds and the horses were driving them alongside their real attackers.

There had been hardly any time for second guessing but as Dravite drew the Kelvic's rucksack over his yvas and made sure it was fastened tightly, he took one look back at the white horse, who seemed barely a horse at all beside his large, buckskin Strider, and hoped that everything would work out. Lian was a skilled hunter and had years of experience in picking out the right target; his choice this morning would not disappoint and as Dravite saw the man’s arrow find its mark, he raised his bow, hugged his mare's middle with his legs and fixed an arrow to the string, awaiting the perfect moment to fire. As the bison plunged into the river and was slowed noticeably by the water, Dravite looked down the sights of his bow and loosed an arrow, which other than skimming the bison's back, did little damage.

The watchman yelled and kicked with his legs for Vicious to charge after the herd and as the horse reacted swiftly, galloping down to the water's edge; Dravite closed her mane in his fists tightly and shut his eyes, expecting to be thrown over her head. To his surprise, the mare leapt into the river and kicked away from the edge to cross as quickly as possible. Dravite dismounted to swim alongside her, keeping his hand curled about the top of the leather yvas to stay afloat while he used his free arm to help him swim. When they reached the other side he was quick to take up the position of rider once more and charged after the herd on horseback, trying to cut ahead of the injured young bull in order to steer him back towards the river so that Lian could take another shot.

Their plan was working, if only because Kaitanu had been in the right place at the right time, keeping the majority of the stock away from them, while they played cat and mouse. Dravite took a second arrow, the feathers of this one wet, making it slightly heavier than the first; the horse lord didn't know if this would make the shot any more difficult or not, but as he released the arrow, he felt droplets of water jump away from the quick moving string to splash back at him. The arrow missed, but only by an arm's length. Drat, the man hissed and hooked his bow over his shoulder, exchanging it for a weapon he knew he could rely on.

As the small group neared the river once again, they hesitated, not wanting to run back towards where the initial danger had been and the smaller bull was stressed, slower, and bleeding where all the movement and crashing against other animals in the herd had driven Lian's arrow deeper. Fearless, Vicious charged her rider towards the beast and got him close enough for Dravite to move with spear raised, eyes forced, and strength swift; he took aim, and propelled the spear overhead, throwing his weight behind the action so that whatever it hit, it would impale at full force. It flew into the thick of the herd and a low, guttural cry bellowed from behind the curtain of dust that had been stirred up by the bison.

When it settled, the herd had crossed the river again and charging straight towards Lian and Strider, was the young bull, head down and back legs kicking, trying to escape the pain that the long, white bone spear lodged in its side was causing. The bull took a few more steps before it tripped and faltered, tearing up grass and earth as it slid to a halt only to struggle to its feet again. Take him down! Dravite waved wildly to Lian, Vicious refusing to brave the water again as the stragglers from the herd bolted in all directions to flee the area in an attempt to try and regroup.

The plan seemed to be working exactly as they had hoped it would. Lian had been uncertain that Kaitanu would understand his part in the hunt, but the horse who was also a man managed to get the herd moving in the right direction. Although most of his focus was on getting an opportunity to take another shot, Lian did see that Kaitanu had spooked the bison herd by pretending to catch sight of a dangerous predator. Or at least that's what it looked like to Lian when he saw the man act like a spooked horse would when faced with a predator. In any case, it was a brilliant idea, and it worked exactly as hoped.

Dravite didn't seem to be having much luck with his bow, but he was able to wound their chosen prey with his spear, and get it turned back towards him. As the young bull charged towards him, Lian could feel Talise trembling beneath him. She wanted to race out of the way of the charging creature. But Lian calmed her with soft, soothing words, and gentle strokes along her neck. Then, when he was certain that his strider wasn't going to panic, and bolt out from under him, he readied a second arrow.

The rampaging bison charged towards him at speed. Calm settled over him despite the danger, and through him, that calm passed into Talise, steadying her. She calmed even further, and stopped trembling. That gave Lian one less thing to worry about. The bull stumbled. Was it finished? No. It's injuries were clearly taking a toll on it, but as Lian watched, the young bull managed to struggle to its feet once more. Lian saw Dravite's signed order to take the creature down. He signed a brief acknowledgement, and agreement back to his friend, then turned all of his attention back to the now severely weakened creature.

He wasn't fool enough to think he would be lucky enough to get an eye shot the way he had with the grass bear they had killed together. And since that was practically the only way a single arrow was likely to be able to drop the beast, Lian didn't even consider a one shot kill. What he needed was a way to do much more damage to the massive creature than his arrows, which were quite small in comparison, were capable of doing. Fortunately, he had one.

The spear that Dravite had used appeared to be embedded deep in the bison's side already. Lian thought he could work with that. He aimed carefully at the young bull's foreleg. It was a smaller target than the rest of the creature, so he took a few ticks to be certain of his aim. When he was ready, he released his arrow. The arrow struck true, causing the mighty bison to stumble once more.

Lian knew that this wasn't enough to finish their prey off, though. So he squeezed Talise's sides with his knees, asking for a canter. He circled around to the bison's uninjured side, bringing them in even closer. Then he released several shots in rapid succession. Aim wasn't important. At this distance, he was almost guaranteed to hit the massive bison, and as long as his arrows struck the creature, where they struck didn't matter. The pain of Lian's attack caused the bison to jerk away in an attempt to escape the new pain. But it was already off balance from the shot that caused it to stumble. Because of this, the young bull was unable to recover. It fell heavily on its side, its own weight driving Dravite's spear much deeper into its side. The bison gave one final, agonized cry, shuddered, and was still.

Lian didn't want to spook Talise again, so he bit back his shout of triumph. But he did sign "victory," "excitement," and "relief" to Dravite and Kaitanu. They had a great deal of work ahead of them, preparing the bison for transport back home, but for the moment, he was happy to savor their victory in a very successful hunt.

Dominion Over Self [Kaitanu]

OOCSorry for the wait, guys. This December was crazy. Thanks for being patient!

And, just like that, the frenzy of the hunt was over, as though a squall had blown in and out, leaving only distant thunder in its wake. The ground before Kaitanu’s hooves was pocked with wet and messy craters, and dust hung in the air about him as he slowed to a canter. To his right and a distance off Cree circled between scattered bison and the men, but he seemed to be running now for the sake of it. His dark mane and head tossed in the wind of a bright morning, and a sharp neigh cut through the lowing of the bisons’ retreat. Perhaps he understood Lian and Dravite’s signs of victory and shared in their exhilaration of the hunt.

Kaitanu could not. He felt only a slight relief at a master’s command accomplished. If Dravite and Lian were pleased then he would escape pain for awhile. That was just enough to make the gurgling screams of the dying bison bearable. Kaitanu could not help being reminded of other things he’d heard and seen that had little to do with wild bison, or hunting for survival. Then again things would return to him at odd times, prompted unexpectedly by the simplest things. A scene of death could hardly fail to bring up that same confusing jumble of darkness that constituted his memories. Dealing with the black tide was routine by now; distract, repress, refocus… distract, repress, refocus… By the time he was within a few yards of the men Kaitanu had forgotten once more, and could look on the twitching carcass of their next meal with little emotion.

By contrast, the other horses were shifting and pawing the ground in the aftermath of the stampede. Talise’s high-pitched nickers met Cree’s as he rejoined them, still tossing his head and dancing over the disturbed earth. Vicious, with flecks of blood on her pale hide, ran her tongue over long and hungry teeth. Her nostrils flared with the scent of the kill. Kaitanu made an effort not to excite them further by shifting forms before rejoining the group. He hadn’t understood Lian’s signs, but didn’t really need to. Both men, covered in sweat and dust, looked like they wanted to crow to the open sky. Perhaps they would laugh and clap one another on the back. If their moods were very good, Kaitanu might get a little bonus in an extra piece of meat for dinner, or something like that. Maybe he could sneak a few bites of grass while they were distracted. He still didn’t know what to expect from either man, but their success was most likely to do him good. At any rate, when they looked at him it seemed to be with an eye of favor. That was reason enough for the kelvic to be as cheerful as he was about anything.

Once the first blush of victory had melted away, Kaitanu saw his chance to keep the good mood flowing by being useful. Naked after his transformation, and shivering a bit in the cold morning air, he bowed to his master, then to Lian. Sweat glistened along his pale flesh, but other than a little breathiness Kaitanu showed no obvious signs that he had just galloped hard after a herd of bison.

”I am, once again, at your service, Masters.” A little slip-up, but he corrected it hastily. ”Dravite and Master Lian.” Kaitanu didn’t know if Lian preferred just his first name or ‘Master’, so he opted for both. A little apprehensive, the kelvic waited for his next duties to be spelled out. Would he be horse or man? At least the chill wind of early morning had dissipated. The sun was already starting to warm his back, for which he was grateful.

Dominion Over Self [Kaitanu]

A victorious howl erupted from the man's throat and his mare jumped back from the water, shaking her head and pawing at the earth, the smell of blood and her rider’s triumphant war cry causing her to dance and pace excitedly. Dravite dismounted after bringing the Bloodbane back under control and jumped into the river, braving the cold to swim across to the other side; arms stretched out and legs kicking furiously to get him across in good time.

When he emerged on the bank, Dravite ran as fast as his feet would carry him to the downed bull and tore his spear from the beast's side before congratulating his friend Lian on the successful hunt, "you might just be my good luck charm," he smiled up at his friend from where he knelt beside the bull, studying its girth and size. As Kaitanu approached, the watchman got to his feet and clutched the young man's shoulder and beamed, smiling from ear to ear, "good work," he encouraged in common, "team work."

Not wasting any time, Dravite peeled off his freezing wet shirt and set it over the Bloodbane's back as she finally decided to join them. He took his hunting knife and opened the bull's belly, pulling out everything they wouldn't use, steam curling up and away from his blood covered hands as he scooped out the animal's innards and set them aside for Vicious to enjoy. They would keep the heart, an organ that would go to Lian for his success; the kidneys set aside too, something that wouldn't go amiss in a nice steak pie.

Dravite butchered the beast, doing his best to preserve a good portion of the hide he peeled back with the sharp hunting knife before cutting his way through the flesh and hot red muscles. The bone was harder to get through and took a few good swings with his hatchet to separate. They would all go home with their saddlebags full today. While Dravite worked on a few choice cuts from the rump, he made room for Lian to work on the ribs and even got Kaitanu involved, laying down the wet pelt for the Kelvic to cut some of the meat slabs into thin strips that they would be able to rub with salt and cure to go towards their winter stores.

By the time Dravite was done packing the saddle bags for both Cree and Vicious, his arms were painted up past the elbows with blood and his chin too, was decorated where he had scratched an itch without thinking. Tonight they would all eat well and celebrate, telling stories and smoking meat on the fire to share with their loved ones. Lifting the legs was heavy work, two for Lian and one each for Dravite and Kaitanu, an even mix or front and back. The horse lord secured a leg for the ride home before helping Kaitanu lift the other up onto his mount for the journey.
