Samuel Thoughts Others

Evening was just beginning as Samuel walked through the streets of Syliras. The sound of his heavy armour was deadened by the thick fog that surrounded him, swirling round him as he strode purposefully towards his destination. The fog had rolled in from the sea a few days ago and visibility was significantly reduced. The fog was everywhere, there seemed to be no escape from it. But life goes on no matter the weather, especially so for the protectors of the City of Peace. The sounds of argument came to Samuel's ears, so he slowed to see if he needed to intervene. Two boys in their late teens seemed to be on the edge of blows, apparently arguing over whose fault it was that a pile of boxes had tipped over. Samuel stepped in to intervene, then realised that the pair were squires. The knight's eyes narrowed, they should know better. “What is the meaning of this?” Samuel growled, “Stop with the shouting and get on with sorting out the problem.” One of the boys turned to the knight and began to whine but Samuel just held up his hand and said “I don't want to hear it, it doesn't matter whose fault it it, it just needs to be sorted.” Samuel stopped and helped the pair sort out the mess, knowing the squires would be encouraged by seeing a superior doing the work too. Once they were done he dismissed the squires and continued on his way.

Once the knight arrived at the barracks he turned and rested his back against the wall. Samuel's eyes searched the fog, waiting for Garland. Samuel had been instructed to go and patrol the Bronze woods outside the city and he'd decided that the experienced squire would be a good partner to join him. Although not yet knighted, Garland was a powerful warrior and Samuel was sure he could depend on him in a sticky situation. The knight had sent a message to the dormitories asking Garland to join him by the barracks and the messenger had returned saying the younger man was on his way. Samuel hoped the squire wouldn't take too long, the light was fading and Samuel wanted to make the best use of it he could.

Garland had just returned to Syliras after a long journey as a guard for the trade with Endrykas. It was a good thing to be out of the city, to refresh his mind.

But no rest for the wicked and no rest for the heroes, Garland strapped on his armor and shield and his bag. Garland was asked by Ser Samuel to be his patrol partner in the woods.

Garland would have said that this was a terrible idea to go out of the city. A heavy fog that covers the entire city, and most of the forest near the city, and sending a squire with little to no experience with the wilds is just asking for trouble.

Garland is confident that Ser Samuel could hold himself in a fight, but he wasn't so sure they could survive in the forest with a thick fog like the one outside looming over them. They were fighters not scouts or hunters, but orders are orders and it having someone you trust with you is better than no one, and Samuel had asked specifically for him.

It was quite flattering that he was asked to join a knight. Garland had never been specifically asked for a patrol before, usually he was just another name on the roster.

They were most likely going to get lost in the woods so Garland had decided to pack food, his water skins, and a tent taken from the barracks, mostly things to survive.

Rope, flint and tinder, his daggers, an axe and his sword were the things he was bringing and hopefully he wouldn't need most of it. He threw the bag on, and walked out the dorms and headed to the gates.

"Ser Samuel! Sorry I'm late, had to pack in case we have to stay the night in the woods. I wouldn't be surprise if we get lost and have to wait till morning to head back. I hope I didn't keep you waiting."

Samuel Thoughts Others

Samuel lifted an eyebrow at the sight of Garland laden with a heavy bag, he clearly had some misgivings about being out in the fog too. The knight's left hand reached into his pocket to brush the flint and steel that he had picked up from his room earlier. Samuel also worried about getting lost, but he concealed this from Garland. He needed to be the leader of this expedition, so he tried to act confident. There's nothing worse than seeing your superior uneasy, it had quite a detrimental effect on morale. “Well done for planning for the worst.” Samuel said, a small smile on his face. Samuel motioned for Garland to follow him. “No, I just arrived.” Samuel said as they walked, “Not a problem.” Samuel nodded to the guards at the gate as the pair left the city, turning to the north towards the woods. Samuel decided he would try and make conversation with the squire to take their minds off the fading light and thick fog. “So,” the knight began, “What made you want to be a knight Garland?”

As they approached the woods Samuel loosened the sword at his waist, quietly suggesting that Garland should do the same. The fog wrapped around the trees like enshrouding robes, making them look even more foreboding than usual. Samuel stuck to the road, watching the trees with a cautious eye. The whole situation made Samuel's skin crawl. Maybe Ferrin was right, the fog did seem unnatural. “Not helpful.” Samuel thought to himself, shaking his head as if to clear his head of such suspicions. At that moment a terrified scream came from the woods. Samuel immediately rushed into the trees, calling for Garland to follow him. He jumped over tree roots and ducked under branches as he moved towards the source of the screaming. He burst into a clearing, where a wolf was standing over a young boy snarling. The knight rushed forwards, slamming his shield into the wolf and pushing it away from the child. He stood staring at the predator, his blade held in front of him ready to strike.

"Hmmm? Why I wanted to join? No reason really. I was on the fence joining the knights. Never liked the rules and all the huff and puff most knights show off, they try to act less like people and more like a force, making people see them as less approachable than they actually are." Garland thought back on the why he joined, what tipped him to the side of joining.

"Ball pretty much got me to join. I never really liked much knights or squires, fights were too orderly like a dance, or how they acted. Ball was stern, firm, but fair, maybe it's the size but he seemed approachable, I've seen him fight in the Shield Games before so I knew despite his small stature, he could pack a punch."

Garland followed Samuel's lead and loosened his blade on his belt. He checked his hidden daggers and made sure they were there and easily drawn. Samuel heard the screaming and rushed off, Garland followed behind and saw Sam bash the wolf with his shield and eyed it down.

Garland ran over to the child and instinctively reached for his belt, looking for his hand-crossbow. He found nothing there, he had forgotten the weapon and silently cursed himself, he pulled out a dagger and threw it at the wolf.

The wolf saw the dagger and dodged out of the way and snarled at Garland. "Wolves hunt in packs right?! Kid, stay between us, alright?" Garland then stood back to back with Samuel, with the kid between them.

If there were no other wolves, Garland would join Sam with taking the lone wolf down.

Samuel Thoughts Others

Garland's question was answered soon enough, several more wolves appeared from the treeline. “Three each.” commented the knight, “Not too many to handle, eh Garland?” The knight was especially glad he had the squire with him, there was no way he could have protected the young boy from six wolves on his own. He expected they'd have enough of a problem as it was. “Try not to advance too much otherwise they'll get the lad.” Samuel cautioned. Samuel stared the circling wolves down, preparing himself for their attack. He didn't have to wait long, the wolf on his left ran towards him and leapt up at his throat. Samuel took a step back and lifted his shield to knock the wolf away. He immediately lashed out with his foot, kicking another wolf away. Samuel slashed at the third wolf, his blade sinking into it's fur. The two other wolves attacked almost simultaneously. Samuel managed to stab one of them but the other bowled him over completely. Samuel fell to the ground, his sword ripped from his grasp as it remained stuck in the wolf corpse.

The wolf immediately pressed the attack, teeth snapping as it jumped onto the knight. Samuel managed to keep his shield between him and the wolf that seemed intent on ripping his throat open. Samuel swung round his fist, smashing his gauntlet into the side of the canine assailant. The wolf snarled in pain and bit at the knight's fist. Samuel took advantage of the distraction to strike the wolf in the face with his shield. The blow threw the wolf off him. The knight jumped onto the animal, striking with his mailed fist to stun it. Then he grabbed his hunting knife from his belt and thrust it into the wolf's throat, finishing it off. As the blood drained from the corpse, Samuel quickly stood to his feet. He turned to make sure that Garland was holding his own and the child was safe.

"Too many! Hah! I can take em all!" Garland let out a large roar and let the wolves come at him.

A wolf rushed towards Garland, and grabbed it in the air and thrust his blade right into the wolf's gut, and he twisted the blade to cut horizontally across the wolf's belly.

Wolf guts spill out on the ground, but while Garland was busy killing the wolf, another charged him to the ground and aimed his maw to rip out Garland's throat. Garland held back the bite with his sword arm.

The armor was dented but he couldn't feel the teeth through the armor. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw another wolf slowly stalk the boy. Garland slammed his fist on the wolf that was pinning him, the wolf loosened his grip on Garland and the squire tossed the dazed wolf at the one making his way to the boy.

"You have to do better than that!" Garland pushed himself up and stepped in between him and the boy. Garland growled at the wolves, barring his teeth, trying to make them back off.

How much use was a shield against wolves anyway? Garland debated just removing his shield, but it seemed to help block Garland's neck at least. He cursed himself for throwing that dagger, he could have given the kid something to defend himself with at least.

Garland just remembered he did have another dagger hidden in his boot. "Kid, there's a dagger in my boot, take it." The kid crawled over to Garland's leg and took the dagger, a wolf growled at the boy and Garland growled back, louder and fake-lunged at the wolf.

Samuel Thoughts Others

Samuel was glad Garland was keeping a close eye on the boy, the knight turned to see the squire was facing off two wolves. Garland was a wall of steel between the dangerous wild animals and the innocent youngster. Somewhere in the back of Samuel's mind a voice noted the symbolism of the moment, the knight believed this was precisely the role of the knighthood. To protect the innocent and defenceless from harm. Noticing that one of the wolves he had slashed with his sword was pulling itself to its feet, Samuel shrugged off his shield and drew his bow. He carefully aimed at the wounded animal and loosed the string. The arrow flew true, striking the predator in the shoulder. The wolf went down, hopefully it wouldn't be rejoining the fight anytime soon. He quickly turned his attention to the two remaining animals, firing a shot at them. The arrow flew harmlessly over their heads, but it distracted one of them from Garland and the boy.

The wolf charged at the knight, who quickly fumbled at his belt for his knife. He'd just managed to pull it free when he was driven to the ground for the second time in as many minutes. The knife spun off into the bushes, Samuel had again lost his grip on his weapon. The knight jammed his left arm into the wolf's mouth, stopping the animal from delivering a lethal bite. He struck with his other arm, frantically punching the wolf in the side to try and get it off him. “Garland!” Samuel shouted, “A little help here!” He kept striking the wolf, but the awkward angle meant he couldn't generate enough force to do any serious damage to the ferocious animal on top of him. He needed help from the squire soon, otherwise Samuel was going to get a chunk of flesh taken out of him by the wolf.

Garland snarled at the wolves, making them back off while he thought of a plan.

Garland heard Samuel call and without breaking contact with the wolves he was fighting, he stabbed his sword down on the ground and pulled out his war axe. He glared at the wolves and quickly turned to face Samuel.

He threw the axe at the wolf, that was pinning the knight. The axe was not made for throwing, and this was actually the first time Garland has thrown an axe, luckily the axe hit the wolf, not with the blade but the haft. The wolf staggered and gave enough time for Ser Samuel to attack and break free.

The wolves Garland was fighting saw the opportunity and rushed at him, and lunged to knock Garland down, aiming for his exposed neck.

Garland turned back to the wolves quickly, with a strong back-hand with his shield, knocking one of the wolves that lunged at him to the side. The other one landed on Garland, knocking him back, but he held strong.

The wolf snarled and barked, chomping his large maw at Garland. The squire held back the wolf with his gauntleted hands and he found feel wet spit splash on his face.

Garland tossed the wolf to the side and picked up his sword again. While one of the wolves was dazed by being thrown, Garland plunged the blade right into the wolf's chest.

The dying wolf let out a pitiful whine and feel limp on Garland's blade. The other wolf snarled and barked, slowly backing away from Garland out of fear and desperation, when the wolf reached the trees, he turned tail and bolted.

Samuel Thoughts Others

Samuel heard the thunk as the axe haft threw the wolf off balance. He took the opportunity to push it off him and rammed his left fist into the animal's side. The wolf growled and pulled itself to its feet. Samuel rolled to his feet and grabbed the axe. The knight swung wildly as the beast leaped at him, managing to knock it aside. Samuel quickly chopped with the axe, managing to bury it in the side of the wolf. It howled with pain, falling to the ground. Samuel turned to see the final wolf disappearing into the trees, the battle was over. He picked up his sword and thrust into the dying wolf's throat, putting it out of its misery. Samuel then did the same to the wolf he had managed to hit with an arrow. Once that was done Samuel came and checked the boy for any injuries. The child seemed shaken, but not in any pain. Once the knight was satisfied that the boy wasn't in any immediate danger, he went and picked up his knife from where it had fallen.

Samuel then realised he had no idea from which direction they had entered the forest. He cursed under his breath, it was already getting very late and visibility was not helped by the thick fog that surrounded them. “I have no idea where we are Garland,” Samuel admitted, “we need to get back to the city as soon as possible.” Samuel crouched down by the young boy, smiling encouragingly at him. “We're gonna get you to safety.” he said, “Just stick with us okay? Everything is going to be fine.” Samuel started to look round the edge of the clearing, hoping to find some evidence of the pairs racks from where they had entered. He couldn't find any thing definitive, but there were several places that looked like something had broken some vegetation by stepping on it. Samuel decided he needed to make a decision, they were losing light and if they didn't act soon they were going to be stuck out in the forest. He picked one of the possible directions he had narrowed it down to and gestured for the other two to follow him. “Garland, you bring up the rear.” he said, “We'll keep the little guy in the safest place; between us.”

"I knew I should have placed bread crumbs." Garland unstrapped the dagger sheathe on his boot and gave it to the boy. "Don't cut yourself, put the dagger in there, if something happens, stay put and be ready to stab if something comes at you."

Garland retrieved the other dagger he threw with some difficulty, and followed Samuel with the kid between them. "I doubt we'll find the city before nightfall, we should gather up fire wood.

They all followed Samuel as he led the group. It was safe to assume they got horribly lost. While they were walking, Garland was already breaking off branches and picking up sticks for a fire.

"I have torches but it'll be too dangerous to move during the night, Ser. I think its best if we made camp here. I would have liked to find a cave or some sort of out cropping, but looking around in the dark is just stupid." Garland dropped the bundle of sticks and branches.

The kid has been quiet for most of the walk, but he seemed to have calmed down, he recognized the armor. Garland set up the wood and clumped up some tinder and leaves.

Garland took out his flint and steel and started striking them together, making sparks fly. It took a little while but eventually a fire was started, the moist fog and cool air made it a bit harder to start a fire.

The child looked over to Samuel, he kept close but didn't seem to want to talk unless he was spoken too.
