Fare Sailing Part 2 (Kailani)

Kynier did not need the predatory instincts he had been picking up on to notice the tension between the two of them. The way that the Svefra grew fearful when he mentioned the lengths that he would go to in order to keep his use of magic a secret. He was mostly sure that she would not disclose his abilities to others. She was still a stranger though and knew very little about her which made it very difficult to really trust her. When they got back to land, he would seek out Old Wayd and a few others that lived on the streets to have them keep note of the woman’s activities and movements.

As he continued to talk it was clear that she was beginning to relax. It was because of her kindness and concern about his health that had made him give her the chance to prove she could be trusted. At the moment, it did not appear that it was going to be misplaced trust. Kailani’s eyes filled with wonder as he described Reimancy and more genuine concern when he explained why he had fallen to the deck in pain. “Yes, I’m alright,” he said with a soft smile of appreciation. “The feelings I receive from that magic are reflections. They are not truly my own and pass rather quickly.”

Once they had returned to Shipwreck Cove she took the apple. Kynier chuckled at the sight of her enjoyment when biting into the fruit. There were little things that he was losing appreciation of he realized. With less concern for the availability of food and indulging in the fresher selections, Kynier had nearly forgotten what it was that the rest of the city’s residents had to live with. Seeing Kailani’s eyes and smile, as well as her pleased moan reminded him of that. Part of him wished that he hadn’t offered her dinner at the Midnight Gem now. If she accepted it and actually came, he’d have to cook. And it felt fairly safe to say that he was the least successful one at the Midnight Gem when it came to cooking. Now, he wished he had offered to treat her to a meal at a place of her choice instead. That would certainly taste better.

He felt no offense at her remark. This trip on the boat had been interesting enough with the weather. While the Katalimaru had definitely made the event much more memorable, Kynier would have preferred to have gone without it. With the potential damage the creature could have done to The Sunset Tide, he wouldn’t want to have adventures more interesting than that either. It was only her fourth day? While she had said that she came to Sunberth recently, he did not think it had been that recent. It was strange how he kept meeting people that were recent arrivals.

It became clearer to him when she mentioned her brother. Though the man only had Shielding in his repertoire, Kailani had at least some positive exposure to magic. “Shielding is a great discipline to know. Something that everyone could use no matter how limited they are in their abilities. And, it’s a safer discipline to know. It does not carry the same risks that others do.” If only that were the reason why it didn’t scare her so much. Thankfully, Kailani had not experienced any of the horrors that magic could truly do to a person, or those close to them. He did chuckle softly when she stated that she was probably crazy, again. “What does that make me for delving into it’s practices?” he said more as a jest than an actual question.

Her request was very surprising to hear. Enough so that he looked at her wide-eyed. “You want me to look at your aura?” Normally it was something that he just did to strangers without their knowledge. With those closer to him, he was more reserved in its use. That and he mainly used Auristics when the situation called for it. He rarely activated it beyond trying to satisfy his own curiosity. He was already feeling better, though he did not expect to be able to examine her aura for very long. “Sure, I can do that,” he said as he tossed his own apple core into the water.

Kynier turned back to look at her and took a deep breath. Reaching inward he went to his soulcore for the remaining Djed that he could use for magic. He harnessed it up to his eyes to open his Sight. The Svefra’s aura permeated through her skin to surround her in a three-foot-thick haze of lapis lazuli. Along her body he noted color variations, mostly along the core of her body. Small traces of red lanced around her ribs and light browns by her navel. Blinking once, he focused his Sight on her aura. The first thing he felt was a slight stillness to his heart that was resembling fear. It was not as extreme as an emotion as that. More… apprehension.

But it was part of a mixture. There was a breathlessness as well that he felt. Excitement? No. Intrigue perhaps. Then there were the more physical feelings that reflected in himself. A rumbling of his stomach told him that he was hungry. But he wasn’t. She was. The apple had done little to quell her appetite it seemed. And then, there was the soreness of the ribs which made him stand a little straighter from the discomfort. The gnosis on her arm radiated power as well, though it was minor. The trace of divine magic had an ethereal quality to it in his sight.

“Interesting. You are nervous yet fascinated. While magic does not scare you as you claim, my presence makes you a little uncomfortable. Though there is no mystery as to why,” he added. “Your aura is healthy and strong. But I can sense that there is something that you’re trying to keep buried. Something that perhaps you are trying to deny yourself from, or about.” The ship pitched and aggravated the reflection of her pain. “I can also see that your ribs still are not recovered from your fight,” he said with a hand slightly cradling his own. Though his eyes were not experiencing the burn of usage, Kynier closed his Sight. He did not want to risk running out of Djed for a simple aura reading.

“Also, you’re hungry. Perhaps retrieving some of those provisions from your cabin would be a good idea.” Kynier slipped a strap of his pack off a shoulder to dig into it as it hung at his side. “That’s all I will do for magic for a while,” he said as he reached into the pack with a hand. He thought of the dried meats and cheeses that he had packed for the trip. The pack’s magic materialized them in his hand and he pulled them out. “My reserves require rest and sustenance in order to replenish. That Katalimaru required a lot of what I had available.”

Fare Sailing Part 2 (Kailani)

Postby Kailani on November 14th, 2018, 6:06 am

Kailani could tell her request was indeed an unusual one from the wide-eyed expression on Kynier’s face, but he agreed readily enough. A smile tugged at the corner of her lips. He was just as crazy as she was, it would seem. Who knew? Perhaps even crazier. Nay, almost definitely even crazier.

She watched with interest as he delved into his magic, the golden-haired sailor sitting perfectly still. When he started to describe her own feelings aloud to her, she gasped. Kailani’s hand moved of its own volition to her bruised ribs, laughing a little nervously. It wasn’t just the fight that had her ribs ablaze. Sharks packed a powerful punch. But that was a story for another time.

The Svefra wasn’t sure what she expected, but his precision was not it. He couldn’t read her very mind, could he? Kynier’s next comment seemed to answer that question. But I can sense that there is something that you’re trying to keep buried. Something that perhaps you are trying to deny yourself from, or about. He could read her general mood, it seemed, but not specific thoughts. Good. She wasn’t sure she’d ever want to see him again if that were the case. Private thoughts should remain just that. Private.

As to what she kept buried… Kailani had a few ideas of what he might mean, but she wasn’t about to speak of any of them. Her tension with Azcan, her break from her pod, her guilt over her mother’s passing; the wounds were all still too fresh, too raw. She wasn’t yet ready to dig into any of them.

“That’s remarkable,” the Svefra murmured instead, diverting the subject away from such thoughts. “And I didn’t feel anything! I thought it would tickle or burn or something, but it was like you weren’t even there.” She looked him over with a speculative turquoise eye, her expression thoughtful. “I think you described my feelings to me more accurately than I even understood them myself.” She laughed softly, shaking her head. “How did you even learn to do that? Is it something you can teach to others, or was it something you were born with? It seems a very useful skill to have.” The seafarer had very little understanding of magic or how it worked, but curiosity was the core of her very nature. She’d learn just about anything someone was willing to teach her.

A growl of her stomach confirmed his assessment of her hunger, Kailani chuckling as she ran her hand over its flat surface. “You’re right. I am hungry. That apple, while appreciated, only served to stoke the fire.”

She looked out over the horizon, the clouds having just parted enough to reveal glimpses of Syna’s slow descent. “It’ll be getting dark soon,” she observed, turning back to look at Kynier. “We should both get some rest, if you still intend to keep the ship until morning. Probably best to sleep in shifts so one of us can keep a look out.” The Svefra looked the mage over, noting the yet remaining tremble of his hands, the pallor of exhaustion in his face. “You can take the first shift,” she offered, though it sounded more like a command than a suggestion. “I can only imagine the toll all that took. You need the rest more than I do.” Her lips quirked with the hint of a smirk. “Besides, I’m too wound up from all the excitement. I couldn’t sleep if I tried.”

Stepping briefly into the cabin, she soon re-emerged with a handful of fish jerky, a chunk of sharp cheese, and half a loaf of bread. “Go on, you can have the bed,” Kailani told him with a smile, gesturing back to her quarters with a smile. “I’ll wake you if I see anything.”

Fare Sailing Part 2 (Kailani)

Kynier chuckled softly at Kailani’s amazement as he bit into a slice of cheese. When he swallowed his bite, he answered her. “Everything creates an aura. Living creatures simply have,” he paused to think of how to describe it to someone that had no foundations in the arcane knowledges. “thicker… auras. And no, you should never feel anything. The magic opens the senses to perceive even more. If you had a very strong intuition, you may feel the same feeling one gets when a person stares too intently at them.” Kynier took a bite out of his dried meat as he listened to her questions.

Kailani was a very curious person. At first, he wondered at first, if she would want to learn it if the opportunity was given. Then he was fairly certain that she would. It was a very useful ability to have at his disposal. He had no idea if how it would be able to help her, but there most likely were plenty of uses that she could use it for. “Auristics is fascinating, even to most of those that know it. Each person gets something different out of it. For me, it is strongly attached to my sense of touch and ability to feel. Other users would have a lot more guess work to determine what it was that you were feeling. Where as I have a lot more guess work at everything else that Auristics could be used for.”

“It is something that everyone is born with, Kailani. Everyone can use it. Most just never learn how to. People generate magic just from being alive. Mages simply learn how to harness it for different functions. If it is something that you are truly interested in learning, then I would be willing to teach you.” Each time Kynier discovered another mage in the city, he usually took an instant liking to them. He was cautious about making it a friendship, mages could be filled with as much ill-intent as any non-magically inclined individual. But the opportunities to discover someone that was willing to learn was something much rarer. Most of the time, Kynier exchanged knowledge. He had failed the last person that wanted to learn from him.

When she commented about Syna’s eventual disappearance, he looked out to sea. The darkness did not bother him. He was blessed to be a Nightstalker after all. Akajia had granted him the ability to see through darkness and speak with her children. But the sleeping had an appeal to it. Taking shifts was a good idea. His only reservation about it being that he did not have the slightest idea how to steer a ship. Last thing she would probably want is to wake up to the sound of her ship slamming into a large rock.

As he took the last bite of his meat and cheese together, he laughed slightly at the sound of her alleged suggestion. The tone clearly indicated that it wasn’t one. And since he had admitted the need to rest not long ago, he wasn’t going to dispute it. Kynier watched as she went to the cabin and waited for her return. She came out with food and offered him the bed. Kynier smiled and thanked her as he crossed the deck and entered the cabin. “Wake me after a few bells,” he said to her as he passed by. The space was small but not uncomfortably cramped. Kynier felt the need to keep his head ducked low but most likely had plenty of room to maneuver around.

With a quick glance, he took in the space. While he did not expect it to be tidy, it was a jumble of possessions strewn about the place. He noticed the small bed that lay in a small alcove in the cabin. He took off his cloak to hang before removing his boots. He came over to the bed and felt his clothing. He was a bit damp. While the Svefra was likely used to the water, having a damp bed was less than ideal. So he took a breath and reached for the remainder of his Djed. For quite some time he stood there as he gathered the mystic energies needed. Once he had it, he formed a Shield weave to place over the bed.

He willed the moisture from his clothing to become an offering to the Shield’s task. Once it was settled, an invisible barrier rested over the fabrics to protect them from water. Kynier smiled to himself. He recently gotten to the point that his shields could survive for a long time by absorbing ambient Djed. The shield would last years and keep water off the bed. He wondered how long it would be before Kailani noticed that. With a shrug of his shoulders, he settled himself on the bed. Once his head hit the pillow he was out like a candle.

Fare Sailing Part 2 (Kailani)

Postby Kailani on November 17th, 2018, 3:21 am

Kailani looked thoughtfully at Kynier as he extended his offer to teach her, considering the options in her head. Auristics seemed a useful skill to have in her repertoire, if a dangerous one to practice in Sunberth. Then again, it wasn’t an extravagant, flashy magic like reimancy. Its use would be much easier to hide. After all, she hadn’t even felt it when the mage had used it on her. “I’ll think on it,” she finally said, a smile flashing across her face. Spiritism with Anja and Auristics with Kynier, she thought. It seems there are more mages here than I thought. Am I soon to be among them? A simple sailor turned magician. The thought made her mind reel.

She took a few bites of her jerky when she re-emerged from her cabin, wrinkling her nose at the dried out taste. The apple had been much nicer, but at least this would serve to sustain her. The Svefra loved the taste of fresh fish, but the dried and salted version somehow just didn’t hold the same appeal. Setting it to the side, she smiled again when Kynier accepted her offer of the cabin. Not like she had given him much of a choice. “I’ll wake you in three bells’ time,” she assured him, waving him off into her quarters. “Go on, now. Get your rest.”

As soon as the door closed behind him, the Svefra took her “meal” up to the helm and settled in. Her oceanic gaze swept over the slowly darkening waters of Shipwreck Cove, the surrounding sea mercifully calm. It was as if the earlier storm had never existed, gentle waves lapping innocently at the sides of the casinor. “You know what you did,” she muttered resentfully to the water with a half-hearted glare.

What a day. It had been one of her more exciting ones, that was to be certain. Spying on Daggerhand ships, getting caught in a storm, attempting to outrun a Katalimaru, witnessing lightning strike underwater… Kailani wasn’t sure how much more excitement she could handle. Just another day in Sunberth? She certainly hoped not. Though life would never be boring again…

Luckily for the both of them, the remainder of the night passed without incident, the pair trading off every few hours to keep watch. When Syna’s rays at last broke over the pre-dawn sky, Kailani awoke Kynier for the final time. “Time to head back into port,” she informed him with a cheerful smile, making the casinor ready to set sail again. The ride back into Baroque Bay was quick and painless, Kailani soon pulling up to her normal docking area at the Cherry Bay pier.

Mooring the vessel into place, she lowered the anchor and turned to her passenger with a tired grin. “Well, Kynier, I can honestly say I hope I never have a more exciting fare than that one turned out to be,” she told him with a laugh, shaking her head. She was only half kidding. “But at the very least, it’s given me a tale to tell for years to come.”

Kailani reached out to shake his hand, grasping his arm in a warm, calloused grip. “If nothing else, I’m glad to have met you,” she told him, her mirth replaced by complete and utter sincerity. “Even if the beginning was a bit rocky. I’m sure we’ll see each other again soon. Though hopefully no more monsters next time, eh?”

Even if their first meeting had been fraught with peril, she looked forward to seeing Kynier again. Something told her their next meeting would be even more enlightening than the one before. Though, as she said… hopefully with far fewer monsters.
