Vasin stood in a group of about twenty others, all of which were looking in one direction and at one person in particular. They were at the Proving Grounds, and they were here for a group session. Vasin had awoken rather early today, as he had wanted to make sure he made it on time. For some time since a certain incident, he had been wanting to improve his skills with a sword. At first, he had tried to improve them with book knowledge. But the journals in the library only offered so much, and as it was put to him that information that he did find was not always going to be reliable. In fact, such information could be dangerous especially if not explained properly. So with that in mind, he had been convinced to attend sessions at the Proving Grounds. A known recruitment tool for certain and nonmembers had to pay a fee to attend.
Leading this particular group session was Iztel the Swift, who was starting the group session as they all stood there. Vasin listened carefully and watched with intrigue as she held a practice wooden longsword. Much the same as he had bought for practice upon arriving. This group session was about longsword concepts. Something that was made very clear to them all as she spoke out, ensuring that everyone in the group as able to hear. Half-Swording. That was the concept as she began to explain and demonstrate it to them. Vasin himself had not heard of the technique before. But he listened carefully regardless, making his mental notes as he usually does. Half-swording, as she explained and demonstrated, is the technique in which one grips the sword blade with their left hand. Vasin thought that sounded dangerous and that it looked fairly dangerous as well. She did exactly that though with the wooden weapon, her left hand on the center part of the practice blade. She did this deliberately and in full view of everyone present. She further explained that this technique was so that one could perform more powerful maneuvers such as thrusts against both armored and unarmed opponents.
Half-swording gives one a leverage advantage when wrestling with a sword! Also useful for delivering more, accurate thrusts upon a target. The reason this is so useful is that when fighting someone with adequate armor, simple slashes or cleaves are practically useless. She called upon a volunteer towards the front and asked them to stand there with a high guard. They did so and she proceeded to show off what that accuracy could be useful for. Asking the people present to imagine that this person was wearing plate armor. She then demonstrated places one can thrust at against such an opponent. Armpits, joints, and throat were all good targets. She demonstrated with both low guards for strikes upwards and high guards for downward strikes. After demonstrating the use of these strikes and guards she asked the volunteer to get into a lower ready guard. Then to stab at her as she got into a hand and a half position with her back exposed to them. Vasin was not sure where she was going with this, as it left her exposed.
