Vasin stood in a group of about twenty others, all of which were looking in one direction and at one person in particular. They were at the Proving Grounds, and they were here for a group session. Vasin had awoken rather early today, as he had wanted to make sure he made it on time. For some time since a certain incident, he had been wanting to improve his skills with a sword. At first, he had tried to improve them with book knowledge. But the journals in the library only offered so much, and as it was put to him that information that he did find was not always going to be reliable. In fact, such information could be dangerous especially if not explained properly. So with that in mind, he had been convinced to attend sessions at the Proving Grounds. A known recruitment tool for certain and nonmembers had to pay a fee to attend.

Leading this particular group session was Iztel the Swift, who was starting the group session as they all stood there. Vasin listened carefully and watched with intrigue as she held a practice wooden longsword. Much the same as he had bought for practice upon arriving. This group session was about longsword concepts. Something that was made very clear to them all as she spoke out, ensuring that everyone in the group as able to hear. Half-Swording. That was the concept as she began to explain and demonstrate it to them. Vasin himself had not heard of the technique before. But he listened carefully regardless, making his mental notes as he usually does. Half-swording, as she explained and demonstrated, is the technique in which one grips the sword blade with their left hand. Vasin thought that sounded dangerous and that it looked fairly dangerous as well. She did exactly that though with the wooden weapon, her left hand on the center part of the practice blade. She did this deliberately and in full view of everyone present. She further explained that this technique was so that one could perform more powerful maneuvers such as thrusts against both armored and unarmed opponents.

Half-swording gives one a leverage advantage when wrestling with a sword! Also useful for delivering more, accurate thrusts upon a target. The reason this is so useful is that when fighting someone with adequate armor, simple slashes or cleaves are practically useless. She called upon a volunteer towards the front and asked them to stand there with a high guard. They did so and she proceeded to show off what that accuracy could be useful for. Asking the people present to imagine that this person was wearing plate armor. She then demonstrated places one can thrust at against such an opponent. Armpits, joints, and throat were all good targets. She demonstrated with both low guards for strikes upwards and high guards for downward strikes. After demonstrating the use of these strikes and guards she asked the volunteer to get into a lower ready guard. Then to stab at her as she got into a hand and a half position with her back exposed to them. Vasin was not sure where she was going with this, as it left her exposed.

The volunteer did an upward thrust, however, as he did so she turned and blocked the strike. Then following that she pushed the sword up against the volunteer's blade, sliding it upwards until the tip was at their neck. These guards as she went onto explain, in hand half-swording are invitations to strike. The following movements then counter to their strikes. Vasin had not thought about it that way before as he stood there, watched, and listened to the demonstration. She then asked the volunteer to take up a side guard and then attack her with a side strike. This time she stood with a sword lowered, left hand on the blade, and pommel facing the volunteer. When the attack commenced she turned, raised the sword, and blocked it deflecting the blow to the side with a push. However, she once more pushed up and as the sword she was bound with was pushed down the tip of her sword came once more to the neck of the volunteer.

After that she had the volunteer come at her with a low half hand strike upwards. She then sidestepped and locked her blade with their own pulling them to the side essentially. However, this time she was not able to bring the tip of her sword to their neck as they were locked up and crossed with pressure. However, she then took the hand that had been on the blade letting go of it and reached under the volunteer's arm. Took his arm, and turned it with force before throwing him down with strength. Then finishing off with putting the tip of her blade to the back of their neck. She explained each movement as she did it and why exactly she did it in that instance.

In the next one, she explained to go at an opponent, lock blades using the half-swording. Then much like before she reached under their arm, and grabbed them up around the shoulder before pulling them down. This time instead of throwing them down she put the tip of the blade from above to their neck without the throw. After that, she demonstrated her earlier guard in which her back was exposed to them. As they came into the thrust, she turned, blocked and bound their sword. However, this time as the blades made contact she let go of the sword blade and placed her left hand on the volunteer's elbow. Then she with strength pushed it. After which she from above brought the blade to the back of their armpit. She then showed this off once more but from another angle.

Once more she had the volunteer come at her, her guard low and back exposed to a strike. She was teaching the maneuvers that could be done with this particular stance obviously Vasin figured out. This time however when their blades locked she added something different in. Instead of a push of an elbow, she placed her leg around the back of theirs and around it. Then at the same time with the blade section of the sword, she pushed against their neck while at the same time pulling at their leg. This resulted in the volunteer falling down to the ground. There were multiple ways to use a half sword technique. These could also be used against non-armored opponents she explained. However, she went even further pointing to the pommel of the sword. A part that some people forget is even there. She demonstrated what she meant by once more getting into a bind and lock with the same stance and attack. However this time she turned the sword and tapped the volunteer on the side of the head with the pommel. Turn and hit, turn and hit she would explain demonstrating the move a couple more times.

Then she demonstrated a variation of this in which case there is a bit too much gap. So instead of a turn to get the sword into place, she shifts the blade and strikes with an uppercut using the pommel while the blades are locked. She also shows that one used their arm to ensure that they cannot move in this instance, lifting it and leaving them exposed to the uppercut. That way they would not be able to move the blade to do that same to them. Next, she went into a similar guard as before, but this time facing them in what is known as a Posta de vera crose while the volunteer had their sword half-swording in a high guard pointed at Iztel. They came at her and did a downward strike and she proceeded to turn, raise her sword, and block locking the blades. She explains in this case the volunteer is trying to push her. She then lifts her sword while pushing back to the point in which the blade is pivoted at their chest, and then thrusts. She demonstrates the movement a couple of times.

She demonstrates a similar move, except this time she is not in position for an easy thrust so she then says to push the blade down, and catch their wrist. She then demonstrates the reason why one would want to do this. She then had the leverage to twist with strength and throw him off balance and onto the floor. She takes a pause to explain, however, that this movement will not work as well against someone who has a more flexible type of sword and to be careful when deciding upon a movement.

Having watched as Iztel the Swift gave her demonstrations to the group Vasin had made sure to try and commit it to memory. He tried to picture himself taking up those stances and carrying out those responses. To Vasin, these stances and these moves all seemed very defensive in nature. As she mentioned, they are invitations for the opponent to strike! Vasin reasoned as he thought about this that meant baiting a response out of an opponent. Not just any response, but one of the ones you want that you can react to. But, he reasoned that there was a risk to this. If you messed up, were too slow, or too weak Vasin imagined that this could turn deadly especially if one was not wearing proper protection. At this point Vasin was eager to try it out for himself, to see firsthand the benefits of these invitation stances. It would seem that Iztel the Swift believed it was time to move on from mere demonstrations to actual practice now. She would tell the group assembled before her to pair off into twos and spar using the moves demonstrated. After the group confirmed this they did so or started to do so. Vasin would quickly find a partner to spar with. The person who had been standing to his left. They had a fresh face, messy hair, and some tattered clothes with what looked to be dried stains. He smirked showing a missing front tooth. Yep, this person would do just fine.

The two of them would pair off with one another at a couple of arms lengths away from one another. His partner decided that he would be the one to strike first."Fine by me." Vasin said as he watched him take up a Short Guard pointing their sword right at him with their body poised for a thrust. Vasin recalled this move from the series of demonstrations almost immediately. He decided to take up what was called a true-cross guard in which he turned away from his sparring partner exposing his back and armpit to them."Don't you think it is a bit early for that?" his sparring partner asked amused."Never too early I figure." would quickly say back looking halfway over his shoulder as he left hand gripped the practice sword's blade near the tip. The tip pointed up at a slight angle and his right hand firmly gripping the handle he awaited. Vasin gave his sparring partner that invitation as mentioned and soon they were at it!

His sparring partner lurched forward with a step and thrust upwards! Vasin stepped and began to turn and raise his practice sword for that deflection he had seen earlier. However, unfortunately for Vasin, his stance had not been as perfect as he imagined it to be. Before he could raise his sword up enough or turn all the way his sparring partner jabbed him on the upper corner of his chest. Rather hard to sending him stumbling back a little after being successfully struck. Steadying himself Vasin brushed the area he had been hit which would clearly get a bruise later."Let us try that again!" Vasin said not discouraged as they got back into position. He took up the same position as before, back and elbow exposed to his sparring partner. He would just have to be faster in turning this time he reasoned! His partner took up the same striking guard as before a Short Guard! The stage was set for another attempt at it! His opponent once more lurched forward going for an upwards thrust and Vasin spotting this reacted! Stepping and swiveling around he would start to raise his sword to deflect. However, while he did turn around fast enough this time, his sword was not in the proper place. The sword of his sparring partner grazed past his own the sound of wood on wood could be heard. This time he got jabbed square in the chest.

Vasin stumbled back, a tad frustrated as he caught himself and would firmly stand there. However, before he could say anything to arrange for another go at it he was interrupted."You are keeping your sword too low! Raise your right hand above your waist." Iztel the Swift called out having apparently taken notice of this. Vasin took pause realizing what he had been doing wrong. He had been keeping his right hand the hand that held the sword below his waist. Precious inches mattered in sword fighting he realized! They could mean the difference between a deflection and getting stabbed. It was more than just brute forcing it while taking up a stance. He would nod his thanks and then get back into position as his sparring partner did so as well. They took up their short guard sword pointed upwards at him and he took up his true cross guard. Back turned towards his sparring partner and armpit exposed. He looked sideways at them in line with his shoulders. He caught himself letting his hand drift below the waist. He raised it and adjusted his stance entirely. He gave a nod to his sparring partner now ready to try it the way he had been instructed.

His sparring partner came at him with a step and an upwards thrust aiming for his armpit. Vasin swiveled around turning with a step to face their thrust head-on. This was all about timing as he pushed his sword out while raising it! He did it! The clank of wood on wood as he intercepted the thrust! His wooden blade knocked away from their thrust which went to the side. Then he recalled what to do next and would immediately go to stab at their upper chest. However, Vasin found he had seemingly overdid the deflection. Put a bit too much force into his at the strike missed his intended target and when to their shoulder. It was a hit, but not as was intended. However, a hit was a hit he supposed as he watched his sparring partner stumble a bit and then grasp at where he had been struck."All right, you got that down. Now it's my turn." he said to Vasin." obviously wanting to try the technique out now himself. Or at least have a go at being the defender since he had been the attacker up til now. So, they got back into position.

Vasin saw him take up the true cross guard just as he had. Back and armpit exposed as he looked in line with his shoulder at Vasin. He seemed to make an adjustment raising their hand up above the waist. At least they had been paying attention it would seem. Vasin smirked at this and would take up a short guard as he had. He briefly considered throwing a curveball at him but decided that would be rather unfair in friendly sparring. Gripping his sword by the handle with two hands and having it angled up at his opponent he took a forward stance posed to strike at him. In this stance, his legs were like springs building up potential energy. Energy ready to be unleashed in forwarding thrust. He rolled his shoulders a little observing his sparring partner. Then, he sprung forth unleashing the springs that were his legs! A quick step and an upwards thrust his target their armpit. They began to turn in response to his attack! Their guard was in the correct position, but they were not quick enough to react. Thus Vasin jabbed him with the tip of his practice sword in their lower right chest. The force of which pushed his own arms back a little as he came to a stop. His sparring partner stumbled back a little at this before catching himself.

"Again" he simply said and Vasin would oblige getting back into position. The sparring partner got into a true cross position once more their back and armpits exposed and right hand above the waist. However, Vasin took note of something as his sparring partner looked at him. He seemed to adjust his stance a little more. Maybe by a single degree or so but he was facing towards him a little more. Ah, that would give him more time. Once more this called back to what he found with the right hand above the waist. Every inch mattered when choosing a stance. Vasin took up his short guard once more posed forwards for a thrust, his sword angled upwards towards his opponent. Once more like a spring, he noticed this time something else was different. The look in his sparring partners eyes... they were looking for something... no, they were anticipating his strike! Of course! It made sense. One cannot simply rely on reactions alone. One must also reliably anticipate an attack on the fly. All of these ideas combined were coming to settle in his mind before he thrust himself forward once more. Wind blowing past him as he quickly stepped and thrust aimed this time at his back! Vasin sent the sword forward and his sparring partner began to turn and raise his sword.

This time around they were met with success as their sword successfully intercepted Vasin's! The sparring partner knocked the wooden practice sword to the side and Vasin's momentum kept him from pulling back. It was impossible with having committed this much to an attack! It was trying to pull back a large drunken man or something like that! The sword of his sparring partner already poised to do so jabbed at his upper chest. It did so jabbing dead center unlike when Vasin had done so as his sparring partner had not overdone the deflection! Suffice to say the jab stopped Vasin his tracks! Winded Vasin came to a stop his chest hurt a little from the precise counter jab. But with a raised hand he signaled he was fine. After all! The sparring session was not over just yet! They would get back into position and continue to practice. Trading off roles whenever one of them successfully pulled off one of the counters the instructor had shown them. Occasionally being instructed how to perform it better by the same instructor.

This sparring back and forth left Vasin nearly exhausted by the end of it. He would take a seat sweaty from the practice and workout. Drinking from his waterskin until it was practically empty he would rest for a few minutes. After which he would get up and head home. Vasin decided after this that he had been pointed in the right direction. He would be returning soon for another lesson.

Notes
I would like to see you strike “would” from your writing! You are the storyteller and have divine, omnipotent power over this fictional world. Would is too wishy-washy a word for a god! :p

For example, instead of:

“The two of them would pair off a couple arms lengths away from one another.”

Try:

“The two of them paired off a couple arms lengths away from one another.”

Because you are god and you don’t tell us what these characters would do, but what they did do. ;)
