2nd of Winter, 518 A.V.

A weight had formed just behind the eyes, one that clouded his thoughts and made them sluggish. Each beat of his heart renewed his awareness of the ache that filled his head. While a cloak was unnecessary, Kynier had brought his mostly for the ability to pull the hood low over his eyes. Syna’s morning light was unhindered due to the clear skies, and it agitated his eyes. Rubbing his brow and forehead with a few fingers added temporary relief that dissipated the moment he stopped. Yesterday had not been the first time he drank ale, but it was the first time he had in such a large quantity. Perhaps not large by most people’s standards, but it had been enough for him.

Making his way towards Stumble Alley, Kynier was going to check in with Doler. The crazed wizard usually had something at the beginning of the seasons. On the one hand, Kynier hoped not, so that he could retreat to a private place and hone his arcane skills. On the other, he wanted the distraction. Something to take his mind off just about everything involving his own life. And while he wasn’t sure if he considered yesterday fun or not, it wasn’t something that he could do every day. And he certainly hoped that his new… landlord… wouldn’t try to make it happen every day.

Stepping into the abandoned storefront, Kynier made his way across the thick web and feces stained floor to the empty shelves that lined the opposite wall. At a set a little off center, he took a fist and struck the back section in the designated pattern to get the wizard’s attention. Twice, once, then three times. After that, he retreated to the center of the shop like he usually did. Often, he wondered why it was that Doler did not want people to be in close physical proximity. And while Kynier was not a social person, Doler made Kynier look like the life of a party by comparison.

After a few chimes of waiting, Kynier wondered if this was going to be a day where the wizard kept to himself all day. The secret passage did not open, and no sound could be heard from the other side. Kynier’s thoughts went still has his mind delved down to the depths of his soul. He brought his fingertips together below his core as he found the reservoir of his Djed. Kynier allowed his mind to be swept away in the currents of his power. Rather than try and manipulate it to his whims, he opened himself up to it. Without provable cause, he felt his power flow freely throughout his body. Eyelids drooped closed as energy ran through his body.

The headache from yesterday was drowned out as an internal warmth spread throughout his being. No physical manifestation appeared, but his Djed filled his body, just below the surface of his skin. Gently, he guided the power to pushed against the center of his body. Until now, he had only attempted to manipulate his astral limbs. In a calm state, surrounded by dust in a place no one ventured, it was the most opportune time he’d have in a long time. Kynier started with the shoulders and used his Djed to push them out of place spiritually. As the tethers to his body came undone, and his astral form loosened, the shoulders began to slack.

As he pushed against the upper section of his torso, he felt his heart race, and doubt crept into his mind. What would happen if he removed the astral torso from his body? His limbs became useless and slack when they were disconnected, would the same bet true of his heart? Would his lungs stop filling with air or his heart cease to beat? The Djed flowing through his body responded to his anxiety and doubt, changing from a gentle stream’s flow to more whitewater rapids. Taking a few deep breaths, he tried to regain tranquility.

While the flow of his magic eased a little, it did not return to its former gentle pace. Accepting the risk, he pushed more on his torso’s astral form. The muscles of his chest went slack, followed by those of his abdomen. While he could not feel it anymore, Kynier could still sense the heartbeat through his pressed fingertips. Air continued through his nose and out his mouth, causing him to worry only a little less. As his torsos separated, Kynier tried to swell his astral chest. While his limbs could stretch and interact with the physical world, what his torso could do was less clear. The mage felt it swell and expand beyond the limitations of his physical body.

It was a little terrifying to be honest. Retracting a foot or a hand was a natural instinct, but this was going beyond the typical shape and function of a mortal body. Taking an instant to fortify his mindset, Kynier pushed further on his astral form to stretch it as far from himself as he could. The navigation was different. One didn’t need to be aware of where their torso was generally speaking. So, when he felt the wooden surface of the shelves against his chest he paused and pulled back in surprise. A half smile came to his lips before he swelled again to press against the shelves. After a chime of doing so, he brought himself back, not wanting to push further than he could come back from.

Silence passed during the chimes it took to resettle his spirit back into his body. No clamoring or thumping came from beyond the secret passage. What was the wizard doing? After Kynier had completely resynchronized he went forward and slammed his fist against the shelves again, only much harder than he did before. After generating his coded knock, he stood by the shelves silently to listen more closely. After a few ticks, he heard something from the other side. Some sort of scuffling. Then he backed away from the shelves to the center of the shop and waited.

When the secret door swung open, Doler stepped out into the shop. Sometimes the man had dark circles under his eyes and his hair was matted with grime. Today was one of those days. Something had kept the wizard up, most likely his own curiosity about something. Kynier crossed his arms and shifted his weight a little. Days like today often brought more “interesting” assignments. The wizard narrowed his eyes at Kynier with a bit of a scowl.

“You’re late,” he commented. Kynier scoffed quietly to himself but didn’t give any argument. He didn’t see the point in it. Doler took a slip of paper out of his pocket and placed it on the empty shelf for Kynier to take once he left. “There is an item that I need you to retrieve. Further details are there.” He turned back to Kynier and raised his chin slightly. “The sooner you get it the better. If I had the time to explain the ramifications of failure for this task, I would. So, understand that you cannot fail.” Doler’s tone was a bit grave. Kynier didn’t say anything as the wizard turned around and returned to his reclusive living. Once the secret door was shut, he crossed the room and took up the sheet of paper.

“There is an Inarta at Ruby’s Scarlet Sanctum by the name of Enza. She has in her possession a feathered fan with a large sapphire encrusted at its base. Retrieve the sapphire without damaging it.”

Kynier read the note twice and started repeating the name Enza to himself. There were glyphs formed around the edges of the paper. Kynier didn’t give them a thorough examination because he had a strong suspicion of what their purpose was. After thirty ticks, the glyphs turned red and erupted into flames that consumed the paper. Kynier gently tossed it up into the air where the fire consumed it to ash before it could touch the ground. Doler rarely incinerated instructions to a task, and rarely gave them by note. Either he was having one of his bouts of extreme paranoia, or there was something very special about this sapphire.

With a sigh, he began to pace. He had heard of the Scarlet Sanctum, just as he had heard about Bregga’s House of Happy Endings, but he had never been to either place. The Sanctum was in the Gated Community and a place of lavish entertainment. Kynier stopped and looked down at the clothes that he was wearing. The pants were dirty, and the boots were covered in scuff marks. He was going to need something a little more extravagant to blend more with the sort of crowd that was known for visiting the Scarlet Sanctum. He had a few clothes suited for it, but not an entire outfit. Thankfully, it was early in the day, and the Scarlet Sanctum was an establishment that operated primarily at night.

The mage took his leave of the Majestic to make his way to Due’s Vestments. Hopefully, the tailor had something available for him, or could make something in time for that night’s escapade.

Secrets and Elegance

It had been an all-day endeavor. By the time Kynier was walking out of Due’s Vestments Syna had already laid upon the horizon, waiting for her love to take to the sky before disappearing. When he did, he was wearing his newest attire for the night’s challenges. Kynier felt like he was a completely different person due to what he was wearing, and it wasn’t a comfortable feeling. Most of it was made of satin and dyed black. A new jacket hung on his frame that trailed down to the half-point of his thighs. Gold trim contrasted the dark sheen, as did the gold cuff links and buttons.

The jacket was open to reveal a matching vest. It was almost completely dark except for the gold embroidery in a paisley pattern. Under the vest, he wore his white silk shirt, though only the short collar could be seen protruding from the vest. A new leather belt was wrapped around new black satin pants that tucked into a fresh pair of high boots with fine gold laces. Kynier was trying to adjust to the feeling of satin against his skin as he made his way to the Gated Community. Weapons still hung from his belt as a means of deterring those that would think him an easy means of increasing their own wealth.

All his normal clothes, and even his cloak, had been stowed away into his pack to join the rest of his possessions. The night was pleasant enough to not need the magically imbued mohair wool. Although, he was more than half tempted to put it on again, just to conceal the opulence of his outfit. Standing out was something he had grown comfortable with not doing, especially with his work as a spy. The closer he got to the Scarlet Sanctum, the better he felt. There was a certain expectation of people that was had while they were in the cities wealthiest district. Only those seeking a loan from Goldfinger were an exception.

The street leading up to the Scarlet Sanctum was mostly devoid of people. A few others that appeared to be among the upper echelon of people were heading in a similar direction as him. Few other buildings were present as well in this section, making the Sanctum stand out more. As Kynier walked up to the rectangular building, a set of bouncers stood at the door. They both glared at him during his approach. One turned to look at the other, who shook his head in a small gesture. Was that a bad sign? The larger of the two looked back at him. “One gold miza for admittance.” Kynier’s heart was pounding in his chest despite the relief that he wasn’t going to be turned away. It was nice being able to just walk in the door for once.

After setting the gold miza in the man’s hand, they allowed him passage inside. Once Kynier went through two sets of doors, he was in a large parlor that over looked the stage. Music was playing from a set of musicians. Gentle ambient sounds provided by string and woodwind instruments. There was also a general murmur of a socializing crowd. After taking a few steps inside, Kynier stopped and examined the scene. Last time he had been in a place with a crowd like this, he had been very young and was following Bourin around. Kynier never thought he’d see a similar environment in Sunberth.

He roamed around the parlor as pleasant music continued to fill the air. It was all so clean, and visually spectacular, that the fact they were all still in Sunberth was nearly forgotten. Nearly. As nervous as he had been about his outfit, Kynier found that it was modest by comparison to some of the people that were present. Women that glittered by the sheer number of jewels they wore, and men that were in the finest silks with fine trimmings of lace or fur. Everyone appeared to be so much… more. Even those who were scarred or disfigured bore a sense of authority and power.

Kynier stopped as his head followed a female associate that moved swiftly right by him. His eyes caught by the unexpected beauty of her figure, and how little was used in keeping her modesty. Checks flushed a little red at the sight as he forced himself to look away before she disappeared. That sensation was short lived as he saw how the male servers were dressed. That was to say that they really weren’t dressed at all. Muscled men that wore only enough cloth to wrap their genitals moved slowly with trays with beverages. As unappealing as he found it, Kynier couldn’t deny that the males were also of a rare appeal.

Exhaling, he moved through the crowd to get a better view of the stage. It may have been empty, but a red curtain was concealing most of it from view. Kynier crossed his arms over his chest. How was he going to find this Enza, let alone, take the item Doler had described? A discouraging thought made his stomach sink. What if she wasn’t even performing tonight? His thoughts were interrupted by a female voice. “Would you like anything to drink, sir?” A stunning blonde Svefra was holding a tray of beverages. Kynier smiled and took one off her tray. She held out a hand expectantly. After a second of him staring at it in a slightly dumbfounded way, she said, “Two coppers, sir.” Kynier chuckled as he handed her the two coins.

A grand smile that wasn’t matched by her eyes was given to him before she went to find others to serve. Kynier caught her arm before she got too far, “Excuse me, could you answer a question for me?” The Svefra smiled and gave him a nod. “Do you know if a performer by the name of Enza, will be performing tonight?”

“Yes, sir,” she said with very little accent to her words. “Enza will be performing on stage at the twenty-first bell.”

“Thank you.” The Svefra gave a little curtsy, as much as she could while still holding a tray of drinks, then disappeared into the crowd. Kynier sighed as he took a drink. The rum burned his throat a little as it went down, which made him furrow his brow and purse his lips. If she was going to be performing at the twenty-first bell, then Kynier had several bells to spend listening in on people he’d normally never see. For the next thirty chimes, he did precisely that. The Nightstalker slowly roamed through the crowd with his drink still in his hand. He was careful to not make eye contact with anyone he was actively listening to.

The method he used was to walk close to a pairing, or even a trio, of people. Stopping close to them, Kynier would turn his back to face the opposite way as he’d listen for a chime or two. There was very little of interest to be frank. People were talking about a recent expenditure or their preferred selection of people to socialize with. Kynier had expected to hear something about “creative” acquisitions of funding, talk of rare items, or even strange rumors. At least some gossip that was different from what he heard from the beggars, urchins, or bards. In frustration, Kynier finished his second drink, and felt the strange tingle on the tip of his tongue. A male server took his empty glass for him.

“Hello, Pet.” The words came from a sultry female voice behind him. First came the confusion of who could possibly recognize him here of all places. Maybe he was being mistaken for someone else? Kynier wasn’t so sure about that, as the voice did not portray any signs of inebriation. When he turned to see who it was that had spoken to him, his eyes widened, and his lips parted. A pair of Svefran blue eyes stared back at him as raven dark hair framed an angular face that was smiling.

“…Petch me.”
