Having never lifted a single finger for anything that resembled sailing, Kamilla wondered what uses Finn could possibly have for her, though if it was going to keep them ahead of the larger ship and therefore safe, she would just have to suck it up and do her best. Physical labour had never been her strong suit or her preference, but desperate times called for desperate measures, although their situation wasn’t quite dire just yet, and hopefully would stay that way.

Returning from the cabin with a few weapons and dropping his cutlass on the deck, the Svefra pushed a knife into Kamilla’s hand, a confused look on the mage’s face. She was about to protest, reasoning that if she needed to fight she’d simply use her magic, but the young man mentioned that it could come in handy for cutting ropes too. Because of this, she chose to remain silent, figuring it would be best to be more prepared than less in case of any unexpected developments.

From there, she simply stood in place, watching as Finn went about his business around the ship, releasing the sail, which did make the boat jump for a second, hopefully signifying that they’d picked up speed. She was not sure however. She wondered why he’d not simply drop the sail fully, thinking that having more sail to catch wind would surely mean more speed, but then she wasn’t the sailor between them so she would trust his judgement.

When he told told her he’d meet her at the back of the ship, Kamilla simply nodded in acknowledgment, making her way to the rear while keeping a safe distance from the edge at all times. Once she’d arrived, Kamilla waited patiently, eyes focusing on the larger ship in the distance for a moment before dropping to examine the knife in her hands, hoping she wouldn’t have to use it.

Finn pulled another arm length of line from the sail before he wrapped the line in a figure eight on the cleat and finished it off with a top wrap to secure the knot. Once he finished, he double checked it to make sure it wouldn’t come undone at an inopportune moment especially considering their situation. He thought they had picked up a little extra speed from where he had started from and that thought pleased him, even if it was only a little bit faster.

Finn wasn’t far behind the brown eyed mage as she made her way to the ship’s wheel, but he did take note of her inspection of the knife he handed her. He didn’t know how concerned she was so he gave her a friendly smile. “You definitely aren’t needing that just yet unless i’ve annoyed you that badly already, in which case I’ll be in real trouble I guess” He then made sure to go around the outside edge of the boat for Kamilla’s comfort before he came up next to her and grabbed a hold of the wheel.

He quickly checked the ship behind them but couldn’t tell if they had gained distance or lost it which hopefully was a good thing. The longer and the further they were ahead of the other ship was the better for them he figured. The sky continued to lighten as the chimes passed and dawn would soon be upon them.

“I’ll just untied the wheel here for you.” He said as he removed the lines holding the wheel in place. “Then you can take the wheel if you will, pick a point on the horizon like a star or something, and slowly turn the boat to the point you picked. Just turn the wheel slowly. That should give us enough of a change in direction I would think” He spun the wheel slowly with one arm as he raised the other arm to point into the distance ahead of them and to the right.

Although he kept his left hand on the wheel to hold it in place until she took over, he motioned her to come closer as he made room for Kamilla to take control of their vessel. He hoped she would as it might give her something new to think about and he simply liked the idea of showing the mage something he knew after she had so nicely shared some of her knowledge with him. Although she wasn’t Svefra, it was a common way among his people

Hearing Finn’s attempt at lightening the mood, the mage offered a small smile, her apparent interest in the small weapon fading away. She wondered if the Svefra had always been the way he was, cheerful, needing to nurture and care for his company, accommodating. The two of them had known eachother for less than a week, but he seemed determined to make her feel comfortable whenever he could. Or perhaps, it was just a trait of his people and their culture. Either way, Kamilla wasn’t sure she’d met anyone quite as friendly as Finn.

”We’re good for now, but let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.” A joke of her own before Finn began explaining what her job would be for the time being. Steering? It seemed simple enough, Kamilla already looking out over the front of the boat and picking the most easily identifiable star as their new ‘heading’.

The Svefra gestured for her to turn the wheel after giving her a short demonstration of how, and Kamilla stepped closer, glyphed hands reaching for the wooden ring. Having already decided on a direction, Kamilla began to slowly turn the wheel in its direction, that being left. She was uncertain of how quickly she should turn the wheel, Finn had emphasised that she should do it ‘slowly’ but she didn’t know what that was for him relative to what it meant to her. So, not wanting to cause a problem or catastrophe, capsizing the boat was one that came to mind, the mage turned the wheel slower than even she felt was necessary.

The plan was to change directions in order to see if they were actually being followed, that made sense in Kamilla’s mind as she turned to look backwards at the approaching ship, already able to see how their own ship was changing direction. It was then that she noticed a potential flaw in their plan.

”Finn, I understand the point of changing ‘headings’ but if they are following us, haven’t we just made it easier for them to catch up?” In Kamilla’s mind, the two ships had been moving in a straight line, the difference in speed being the only factor they needed to worry about, but now, by turning, they’d given the other ship a chance to cut them off if they were so inclined, or at the very least, close some of the distance.

Finn chuckled a little at her joke and was rather surprised by it.

After she took control of the wheel he moved out of her way but stayed close at hand to take over if needed as she looked around and tested the wheel. As he stood beside her and watched her gingerly turn the ship’s wheel, he was quickly reminded of his own first time at the wheel with his Mother standing where he was now as how she had corrected his younger self on more than one occasion. He looked over to Kamilla and he told her “A little faster is fine but you’re doing great.”.

He could feel the shift in the boat as the vessel started to turn and he listened to her question. Of course she was correct but he hadn’t planned on turning all that much either so they shouldn’t gain much if any on them in the end or so he hoped anyway. His mistake was obvious to him now but he knew he should of forewarned her earlier. “I’m sorry but yes, I should of mentioned that earlier but failed in explaining that. We don’t need all that much of a change and after a few chimes on a new heading we should start to see a change in distance or start to see the side of their ship as it continues onward. If the ships turns to follow us we will continue to see the front of the ship as we do now or maybe even with it being slightly closer.” He attempted to fix his error regardless of the lateness of it. “If they follow, then we will do what we can to put more speed on for ourselves.”

So he didn’t commit the same mistake again, he decide to tell her a little extra on the wheel before he stepped away. “Once the front of the boat starts to move to your new heading, be sure to take the wheel back towards center to slow or stop the turn as you need. Once you have the heading you want then you can tie the wheel off to the straps on either side or shout and I will come and give you a hand on the ties.”

With a double check to make sure Kamilla appeared ok at the wheel he took the steps over to the boom and started to untie the line on the block. He wanted to make sure they didn’t lose too much wind in the sail as they turned so he could adjust it as she turned the boat for him. He hoped this would keep a safe distance ahead of the other vessel.

Although he watched the boom to make sure it didn’t swing back at him, he had been hit by it once before and didn’t want to repeat of that unexpected pain but he tried to keep an eye on the turn and the wheel to make sure no more unexpected problems arose.

With Finn confirming Kamilla’s suspicion that she was indeed being to cautious as she attempted to change the ship’s direction. She gave the Svefra a simple nod of acknowledgment before speeding up her turning of the wheel. Sure enough, the subtle change in direction became far easier to spot.

Finn went on to explain that he was indeed aware of the disadvantage of his strategy, assuring her that the change should be small enough that it wouldn’t make a significant change in the distance between themselves and the larger ship. Kamilla couldn’t say that she was surprised that the Svefra had already taken these things into account when making his decision, she may not have known him too well but he did know a lot more about sailing than she did, so it stood to reason that if she had thought of it, so had he.

Another nod as he told what to do once she’d successfully changed their headings, eyes darting between the star she’d chosen and Svefra as he made his way along the ship. ”On a scale of one to ten, how concerned are you?” She asked after him. Of course it wouldn’t be great if the other ship’s motives weren’t pure, but he’d already insured her that their ship was smaller and therefore faster, so the odds seemed to be in their favor. To Kamilla the level of concern was somewhere between a four and five.

”I mean, as long as we stay ahead of them, what’s the worse that could happen?”

Almost as soon as the words had left her lips, Kamilla could sense something had changed in the air. Whatever it was had been so subtle that even as the mage looked around curiously, she could not spot the change or its source. It was only as the ship slowed what almost felt like a halt, that she finally realised what had happened. ”The wind...” The winds that had been propelling their ship through the sea had completely disappeared. Suddenly her concern jumped up several points.

He thought about her question for a moment as he worked. “I’m not real sure, maybe a three or a four. I mean would they really be stupid enough to attack a Svefra? ‘WE’ don’t allow pirates on the sea in general let alone anyone that attacked one of us so it doesn’t make much sense.” He reasoned out loud to her as he thought it in his own head. “But I have never seen a ship try to run down a casinor either, a pod for trading maybe.” although he stopped as he tried to tie off the line for the boom again, which took a couple of attempts as he talked quicker than he tied and definitely thought harder on the discussion.

Finn grinned at her second question, whether he misunderstood her or not he didn’t overly think about it as he came back to the wheel. “As long as we are ahead of them, we might as well break out the ale from below and toast to our good health and sunbathe on deck. I’ll tie this off now if you want to grab the glasses…” He didn’t even know how serious he was, but as he talked he understood the concern that had crossed her face as she commented on the wind.

He looked up at the sail as it went silent from the lack of wind. With the conversation they just had, the silence quickly became ominous to his own ears. He could see the concern in her face that probably mimicked his own at least to some degree. He looked behind him and could see the other ship at least in a similar position as they were which was good as it kept them on even ground and relieved a little of his concern.

He bent over and lashed the wheel down to their last heading out of habit, but good habit he thought. “It’s tied off so you don’t have to hold it anymore” He told her as he turned around and leaned on the wheel next to her to inspect what he could see. “Well we are still ahead of them and they have the same problem as we do it would appear.” They still had a good lead between the two ships and he hoped it was too far for a rowboat but even that would take a long time to row that distance.

He stepped to the back where he sat down against the rail to watch the other ship. He slipped his feet out of the boat and into the water as he looked back at the mage. “ Not sure we have much else we can do except watch and be prepared until the wind picks back up.” Nothing that the young svefra could think of at the moment anyway.

Kamilla couldn’t help but crack a smile at the Svefra’s reaction, his confidence proving quite reassuring to the mage. He was right of course, if there was no wind to push their small ship then there was no wind to push the larger ship. While it wasn’t ideal to be dead in the water within the line of sight of the unknown ship, it was certainly better than being caught up, assuming they weren’t friendly. Honestly, by now Kamilla had already decided that they weren’t in the back of her mind.

Allowing Finn to tie off the wheel, Kamilla turned to observe what she could of the larger ship. The sun had risen to a decent enough height by now that the ship was far easier to spot than had had previously been in the dark. Despite the light, there were still no important details visible, at least to Kamilla. Letting out a sigh, the mage supposed she might as well take the Svefra’s advice and relax.

”So we just wait for the wind? That’s it?” Of course, Kamilla knew next to nothing about sailing, but she’d never thought of what happened when there was no wind, suddenly imaging much larger ships simply dead in the water, awkwardly drifting until the wind picked up again. ”How long can this lack of wind last?” She was curious.

She’s been about to take her eyes off the larger ship in favor of heading down towards the cabin to check on Yennefer abs Roo when she noticed some activity, her brow furrowing slightly as she squinted to try and see what was happening. ”Um, Finn..,” She began, noticing that the other ship had furled its sails, followed be what looked like several long sticks dropping into the water on either side of the ship. Kamilla could only assume the sticks were oars, but it became very clear that the other ship was moving towards again.

If they did have bad intentions, then the other ship was persistent, and given the amount of effort they were putting in to close the gap, Kamilla felt like their unfriendliness was all but guaranteed.

“For the most part, unfortunately” Finn answered as he tried to think about anything that he may of forgotten that they could try. He disliked the current situation far less than he tried to show, he had enough faith in the speed of his ship but the lack of wind even took that away from him now. He knew they still had some options but not the ones he preferred.

He shrugged at her question about how long would the calm last as he had no idea at all “Not really sure but hopefully not over a few bells.” His experience with this type of thing was next to nothing and he saw no reason to exaggerate it for her.

As she called, he looked up and found her squinting behind them which forced him to see what was going on. To his own surprise the other ship was rowing towards them, it would take them a while but they definitely were headed for them. Finn started to wonder why he liked surprised, or maybe more accurately now was did he still like surprises anyway. “Shyke!” he exclaimed as he stood up from the rail. “I didn’t expect that I guess”

He walked over near the cabin and picked up his cutlass, he pulled the blade out to double check it. The blade appeared sharp and true before he sheathed it again and attached it to his belt. “If the wind picked up quickly enough we could be long gone by the time they could get here or underway I think however fate appears to be working against us at the moment. Unfortunately our options are slowly shrinking away from us.” he told her before he paused to let her think on it as he cleared the deck for a little room.

“We may need to prepare to defend ourselves if we have to, likely too many of them to convince into believing the pod is nearby especially with Camira off somewhere now. Don’t think we could pass you off as a Svefra either, even if you were willing.” He grinned down at her. He didn’t exactly feel it was brave nor was it foolhardy, he just began to think it was about the last option they had left. If they forced him, he would defend his ship as needed.

“What do we have maybe fifteen or twenty chimes before they get here? Less before we can shout between the ships. Unless you have any other thoughts or suggestions?” He watched the ship as it rowed toward their own vessel as he steeled himself for the confrontation that he felt would be coming as soon as they were in shouting distance of each other.

It seemed that the other ship beginning to row towards them had caught Finn completely by surprise, the Svefra exclaiming loudly at the sight of the slowly approaching vessel. She watched as he checked his cutlass, obviously preparing for a fight, though Kamilla still hoped it wouldn’t come to that. It seemed an unnecessary outcome in the middle of the sea, though she supposed this kind of thing happened more often than she had ever assumed.

Hearing the Svefra’s voice again, the mage’s gaze moved from the approaching ship to the handsome young man. ”So you seem pretty confident that they are _not_ friendly...” She began, though honestly she felt the same. What other reason would they have for physically rowing their ship towards them. ”... but, if it’s a fight they want, I’ll make sure they regret it.”

In all honesty, Kamilla was still fairly confident in her ability to defend herself. ”If they get too near and things aren’t looking good, I might be able to just sink their ship... or at least damage it significantly.” After all, the other ship wasn’t huge, just a few times bigger then their own. Although she didn’t like the idea of leaving however many people it contained to drown, if it came to it, she’d protect her own first, Finn included.

Several chimes passed with their ship remaining dead in the water as the duo watched in anticipation as the rowing vessel had grown closer and closer. It was close enough now that they could properly gauge the size and some details, though still a few chimes out of reach. Kamilla had already ventured below deck to check on Roo and Yennefer, who were blissfully ignorant to the approaching danger. ”They’re almost here... and still no wind.” She spoke from the spot where she’d been seated on the deck, casually turning the small knife over in her hands. The prospect of a fight was looking more and more likely by the chime.

He watched the other ship row towards the duo as he listened to her speak. The ship cut through the water at a good rate and actually faster than he would of expected for a ship of the size of it. He let her question lay as he thought about it and then finally didn’t really know how to answer it and really felt that the two of them thought similarly that they were up to no good. However the woman’s resolve surprised him slightly along with her willingness to fight, he expected neither from this lady when they left Riverfall although that could of been his own naivety.

Kamilla’s confidence in all of this impressed him as she spoke and he hoped he showed half of what she showed. He wondered how much of it was a threat that she made against the other ship but he truly suspected that she just might be able to actually do what she said which made him admire her a little. He couldn’t help but give her a smile as he realized this.

He continued to watch as the chimes passed, Kamilla checked on her own things before she came back to him with the only change being how close the other ship was. He simply tried to pass a little time and make it easier on both of them “Your things below all ok?” but still continued to watch and wait. Patience had been learned with the long hours of sailing over his life.

Finn forced himself not to react or look up as the sail rustled ever so slightly. He quickly laid a hand on her shoulder and gave her a gentle squeeze as he quietly told her “DON’T look up, we need more time”. Although he really didn’t know if she understood him or not but he hoped she would listen long enough to figure it out and she had already proven to be smart.

He quickly made the decision and acted on it. He walked to the closest corner to where the other ship approached before he grabbed one of the lines to the top of the sail and jumped on top of the rail while he used the line for balance. He reached his arms above his head and started to wave them back and forth. He put on a big smile like he was their best friend as he switched to Fratava as he yelled as loud as he could at them “GOOD MORNING……. TRADE?........ FOOD?......... WATER?........... YOU WANT?” He hoped it was good enough to make sense or at least confuse them for a chime or two.

He then jumped down and stood between the other ship and Kamilla as he looked down at the mage. “Doubt if they have any doubt they are dealing with Svefra at the moment. Hopefully enough to keep them from noticing anything.” He told her in common as he watched a lock of her hair slowly move slightly in the building breeze, he hoped it would continue to grow.
