Kamilla found it frustrating, waiting and hoping that the wind would pick up and save them. It was not like the mage to rely on forces that were out of her hands and she did not like it at all, the lack of control, feeling powerless. The ship wasn’t a long ways off from theirs now, soon enough they’d meet their pursuers, for better or for worse. Most likely, for worse.

When Finn spoke to her, telling her not to look up, Kamilla had to fight every urge in her body to follow his instructions, despite having no clue what the young Svefra was planning. She found out soon enough as she heard him yell in what she could only assume was his home language, which she understood none of.

There was a deafening silence following the Svefra’s speech, Kamilla, unable to resist any longer, turning to see how the approaching ship would respond. It was then that she noticed an odd looking figure barely peering over the rail of the larger ship, though a moment later the figure rose into view, having clearly climbed onto something, though she could not tell what.

”What ‘ave we here? A lonely Svefra ship in the middle of the sea, ay?”

There was an outburst of laughter following the old unpleasant sounding voice of the man that had just spoken. From the casinor, Kamilla could make out a few details belonging to the very short speaker. The man had a beard that, even from a distance, Kamilla could just tell smelled badly because of its filthy and unkempt appearance and on his head sat a mass of brown hair, almost the same size as the man’s head with a flick in the front that she could swear she’d just seen move an inch.

”Ooh, and I lady too, ay? What do you think Pompadour? Will this tiny ship make for a good haul? I’m sure they have something of value aboard.”

At the mention of its name, the large swirl of hair upon the man’s head leapt onto the railing in front of the pirate, revealing the man to be completely bald, Kamilla now noticing that even eyebrows were missing from his face. The creature, Pompadour, looked to be a ferret, squeaking something into the short pirate’s ear before returning to its spot on his bald head.

”Pompadour agrees with me. He says that at the very least, that woman would sell for a high price on the slave market... Now you two be patient now, we’ll be there and on board in a jiffy. ROW FASTER YE SCRAWNY PETCHERS!”

Hearing the man’s comment, Kamilla could already feel the disgust growing within her, eyes drifting upwards and towards the sail in hopes of a miracle, but mind came. While the sail of their ship did shift slightly in the breeze, even she could tell that there was not nearly enough wind to serve there needs. She was sick of waiting. If only she could make her own...

Eyes widened in surprise as an idea filled the mage’s head, the pirate ship now drawing dangerously close. ”Finn, drop the sails! Quick!” She had a plan, one that hopefully wouldn’t include killing the pirates.

He had hoped that his fears about this other ship weren’t realized however as soon as the other ship started talk he knew they were in trouble. He would of been elated if his antics had worked but he really hadn’t figured they would do much and this one appeared to be a serious pirate too. He watched and listened to the pirate with disdain as he instinctively grabbed the hilt of his cutlass.

The threats on his ship hit home with Finn quickly enough, this man likely knew that FInn would never allow that to happen while he was alive as he thought any Svefra would feel the same. He imagined himself helping to send the man and his rat to help feed the sea below. Wait, it wasn’t a rat but it mattered not at the moment and he patience on the manner had started to wear thin.

Then he threatened Kamilla with slavery along with his own life, anger swelled from deep inside himself as he had enough of that kind of talk. In a single swift motion and without even realizing he was doing it, he pulled the cutlass out and brandished it. “Make sure you are first over and you and I will have a go at it before I make a glove out of your rat and you feel the cold of the depths!”

He turned and scowled at her after she yelled at him and as he tried to comprehend what she wanted him to do. The sails were useless just yet and if he acted to early it may reduce any lead they had getting underway quicker and then away from the other ship. It didn’t make any sense to him yet but as he looked at her, the look in her eyes told him that he had missed something. He forced himself to listen and trust in her, as he pushed his anger away for now.

He slammed the cutlass back into the sheath as he quickly made his way to the mast so he could rig the sail as she asked of him. He grabbed the mainline and let the sail go to full size before he knotted it back into the cleat before he set the boom as best as he could guess might help. He thought the new breeze was coming from behind them so it was set to grab that wind he hoped or at least a good portion of it.

He returned to where she stood and looked at her questioning as he hoped she had something more to say. His hand instinctively went to the hilt of the cutlass in preparation of what he expected may be next, he watched as the other ship rowed toward them. They would reach the pair in chimes he expected as they started to pull oars in and as Finn prepared himself to repel boarders from his ship.

How had she been so idiotic? The solution had been so obvious, she had control over the whenever if air, which was exactly what their ship needed to get moving once again. It wasn’t that the thought hadn’t crossed her mind, but sending short bursts of air into the sails seemed extremely taxing and most likely ineffective. It was only when she thought of a certain experiment she’d tried in the comfort of The Quarters that a plausible solution had made itself known to her.

The mage was grateful to see Finn doing what she’d asked without question, having seen the anger in his eyes after the ferret headed pirate had spoken. The Svefra must really have trusted her.

”Have it yer way then, ya petchin sea rat! The short pirate yelled from a distance, seemingly accepting Finn’s challenge, though Kamilla wasn’t keen on seeing the outcome.

While he went about lowering the sail, Kamilla positioned herself near the rear of the ship, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath as she reached deep within and glistening lavender res began to pour from her palms, gathering in a growing ball in front of her. In the not so distant distance, she could hear the pirate yelling for his crew to row faster, they must have almost been within reach.

The ball of res grew more and more until finally it was about the size of Kamilla’s head, if not slightly larger, the mage opening her eyes which were now filled with determination. Turning so that her right side was facing the sails, she willed her res to float nearer to it, stretching the ball out to form a elongated hollow ring before willing it to attract the element of air.

The sails rustled as air rushed from all directions towards her res and Kamilla began moving her hands in a circular motion, each hand remaining at the opposite end of the other as she continued the clowkwise motion, the oval shaped ring of res mimicking her movement. Her and dress alike flying about because of the created winds.

Slowly, the sails would begin to fill with the excess wind being thrown off of her spell, their casinor beginning to crawl forwards at an unremarkable speed, but as Kamilla got more used to the motion and cycle of her spell, she willed her res’ attraction to be more powerful and sped up her movements, throwing more and more wind into the sail.

She recalled using a slight variation of this technique back on Sahova, years ago. At the time she’d only barely gotten a grasp on air and used to it clean out her dusty stone closet of a room, using the air to pull all the dust out into the passage instead. It was a simple but helpful use, but she was glad she could now use it for something important. Their survival.

In the back of her mind, Kamilla found herself hoping that her Reimancy would make enough of a difference to keep them safe. Though it depended as much on Finn’s ability to sail with the makeshift wind as it did on her ability to keep it consistent.

He watched as the other ship neared more than he ever should of allowed them to reach, he started seeing the individual people as they prepared boarding ropes for his little ship. He knew there were too many pirates on the other ship to handle by himself and he had no idea what Kamilla was doing behind him. She hadn’t bothered to tell him her plan although he could tell she had started some magic of some kind, not that he would of understood the magic anyway.

She had appeared to be in deep concentration so he let her be, he instead watched the other ship and waited as patiently as he could. His knuckles turned white as he held onto the hilt of his cutlass at his side, they rowed faster and readied grapples and ropes to tie his ship off and he knew he couldn’t let that happen. Although for the moment they were still too far away and out of reach, but that wouldn’t be the case for long.

He failed to take note of his own ship shuddering in the water as Kamilla forced wind into the sail at first. The sail rustled more until it filled completely as the ship creaked and groaned until it finally lurched forward slightly. The lurch caused him to finally looked back at Kamilla to find her arms circling in front of her and a wind formed around her and blowing up into his sail. It was a quite impressive sight of magic that the woman performed as she harnessed the very element that they needed and commanded it to do her bidding. He only hoped she could maintain it large and long enough for them to get away.

The sound of a grapple hook hitting and dragging along the deck brought his cutlass out as the hook caught on the deck to sink in deeply. Finn scrambled over to the line to bring a heavy blow from the cutlass onto it, his blade easily cut through the taut line and into the decking itself causing another gash as well. The hook could be pried out later if he had a chance but for now he knew another hook would be coming back again in just a chime or two as they pulled the rope in and tied on another one. He could also see Kamilla’s effort had started to pay off as his ship moved forward faster now.

He could feel their ship moved forward more and he was tired of waiting, he needed to do something or anything that might help them. If she could make them a wind for a chance to get away, he decided to make use of every bit of it that wind that he could. Sheathing his cutlass once more, he jumped to the sails to adjust them every bit that he knew how to. He didn’t care which direction they went at the moment as long as they moved away and as fast as they could possibly make his ship move. He adjusted the lines on the boom block to pick up any little extra before he opened the jib sail fully for any extra speed that he may coax out of it. The little sail dropped and was immediately filled adding to the growing speed of their ship.

Kamilla’s effort seemed to be working, the other ship continued to row and rowed hard now but were no longer gaining on them. If he wasn’t mistaken, they had actually gained a little distance for the first time all morning. “Beautifully done Kamilla!” he told her although he didn’t feel like it was over just yet. Their speed grew as they started to cut through the water once more, when the pirates tired of rowing he hoped they would speed away easily enough. He wondered how long she could perform this feat and what it did to her for her efforts.

Entirely focused on maintaining the winds, which continued to grow in magnitude the longer she held the cycle, Kamilla was completely unaware of what was happening behind her as the opposing ship drew nearer, powered by its rowers. She could hear by the voices that they were uncomfortably close but didn’t dare look back and risk losing her concentration.

The clattering of metal on the deck followed by scraping and finally a powerful shake as the grapple sunk into the ship’s wood, slowing its moving, nearly caused the mage to loose her footing but she managed to catch herself and maintain focus. She would have to rely on Finn to remedy the problem which, to her relief, he swiftly did by cutting through the road and freeing the casinor.

”What? The woman’s using some accursed magic! We’ll have to put her down first!”

The pirate’s words along with the closeness of his voice made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up, but she continued to rotate her lavender res, throwing wind into the sails and pushing their ship further along.

While the initial gusts of wind had caused the ship to lurch forward, slowly forcing it to crawl across the ocean’s surface, Kamilla’s continued efforts became evident as time passed. As the ship gained momentum, it’s speed allowed it to cut through the water with more and more ease until they were visibly picking up speed.

As the ship’s speed increased, Kamilla noticed Finn busying himself around the sail, she had no idea what he was doing but had faith in his abilities. After all, the young Svefra had gotten them this far. Thankfully her faith had been well placed as Finn’s adjustment revealed itself to be fruitful, the ship lurching forward with even more speed.

While the amount of res she’d produced was significant, it hadn’t been enough to exhaust her outright, though already she was beginning to feel the strain of producing more than she would normally. Since leaving Sahova, the mage’s use of Reimancy had been few and far between, the amounts of res used even less. Because of this, it made sense that the sudden leap in production would take its toll, her djed was like a muscle after all... and she hadn’t exercised it to such an extent in quite sometime.

”Pompadour! Go distract that wench! Make her stop whatever she’s doing! Men, fire!”

While the short pirate’s commands weren’t at all pleasant, Kamilla was comforted by the how much farther they’d sounded since the last time he’d spoken. However, her relief was short lived as yet another grapple hit the deck, barely making it aboard but hooking well into the railing right behind her. As if that weren’t problem enough, Kamilla could hear an odd sort of scurrying noise coming from behind her, along with a stinging pain in her arm as an arrow grazed past her skin. The pain drew a pained gasp from the mage who dropped the spell for a brief moment, checking to see that she’d only received a shallow cut before resuming her spell, ignoring the blood that began to drip from the fresh wound.

Finn was quite pleased with the progress they made while they worked together, not that he a chance of performing the magic that she did. The short pirate’s comments annoyed him to no end, not that he exactly liked the thought of any pirate but he pushed it out of his mind at the moment as he needed to concentrate more on their safe escape over a petty grudge. If they made it out of here, he would need to remember to find and send an Avikki to find a pod near here to track this pirate down for good

He kept a close eye on the sails to make sure nothing slowed them down, the pirate ship for so many reasons, but mainly he stayed out of Kamilla’s way so he didn’t interfere with her magic. However it was harder to see what all happened on the other ship as it sat higher than his own ship but he could tell something had changed. The oars of the pirates went they moved around inside the ship, he could hear orders being barked but too low for him to understand them until the short pirate made another attack against Kamilla and his men followed his orders.

Another grapple came flying across the distance in a long fast arc that made it onto his own ship, this throw nearly caught Kamilla on the other side of the ship as it landed and sunk into the deck rail. A bowman also popped above their rail and took aim at her before his arrow flew and caught her enough for her to check it but Finn couldn’t tell how bad she was hurt regardless a streak of crimson ran down her arm. “Shyte!” was all he could say.

Finn jumped toward Kam as he pulled the cutlass out of the sheath with haste, the grapple line quickly tightened as the pirates fell behind them until the rail creaked and started to come off just as he reached it. The entire ship shrugged as the tension pulled on it, his sword flashed and then came down on the line, again it sliced thru the rope easily as a small furry creature jumped out of the way of his weapon and onto the corner of his ship as it scurried away from him and under the decking but the rail dangled precariously in the air from the one end that was still attached. “Your petching stuck here with us now creature!”. The little creature would have to wait for now as he knew he had at least one bowman to contend with still and that was more important now that his ship was freed from the grapple line.

Finn stood up to his full height and placed himself between Kamilla in protection so the pirates had to literally go thru him to get to her, he knew they were in deep trouble if something happened to her right now so it was an easy choice to make. The pirates, without rowing, were quickly outdistanced by her magical wind and proved his good intentions to be a mute point as the next arrow barely made it into the rear of his ship and the third arrow splashed harmlessly into the water behind them. He looked around quickly for the ferret but couldn’t find it anymore, he decided not to relinquish his spot of protection over the mage until they felt safe again.

Gritting her teeth as she did her best to ignore the annoying sting of pain coming from her bleeding arm, drops of blood running along her exposed skin, Kamilla remained focused on her res control and getting them as far away from the pirate scum as possible. Despite her determination to escape, there was a significant part of her that just wanted to turn around and hurl the remaining res toward the larger ship in the form of a large boulder, or perhaps several stone spikes, it didn’t matter so long as it would cause damage. Fortunately, she knew their safest bet was flight rather than flight.

While she’d only briefly faltered because of the arrow, Kamilla watched as Finn went to cut the second grapple, keeping track of his movements as best she could with just her peripheral vision. The Svefra yelled something odd about a ‘creature’ but she didn’t think it important enough to ask about at the moment, noting as he disappeared from view though she could feel his presence behind her, offering himself as a human shield to protect her from any arrows.

While the notion was appreciated, Kamilla was not keen on the potential of losing the only person who could sail to a well placed arrow and besides that, she’d begun to grow fond of the Svefra’s company.

”Finn, how much distance is between us and them?” The words were filled with determination as she continued to cycle her res and throw wind into the sails, the pain in her arm slowly beginning to fade to a more soothing sensation, something Kamilla recognised as an early stage of oncoming overgiving. She was still fine, for now, but it was not ideal for her to continue much longer. Regardless, she wanted to ensure they were as far as possible from the hostile ship before she stopped.

In the distance she could hear the shorter pirate yelling something about lowering the sails. Perhaps the wind had finally picked up again?

Kamilla’s magic pushed his ship along at a good clip as he watched the pirates fall behind once they tired of rowing. Her endurance impressed him to no end as there was little that he felt he could do just then except watch over her and make sure the ship made the most of her magical wind she produced but for now the ship cut the water quickly and easily so he didn’t interfere with anything.

The little furry stowaway was still hiding or trapped somewhere around the edge of the decking it seemed. Every now and then he thought he could see it or hear it scratching around but not well enough to actually find it. As long as it left the mage alone and didn’t interfere with her then he really wasn’t bothered by the little creature, what could it do. Eventually they would have to find it or let it out so they could catch it before it made too much trouble.

Finn checked behind them to see she had given them a real good distance between the two ships, but he could hear it in her voice as she asked that she worked on pure determination now. Although he could still hear them, it wouldn’t be long before they would be out of hearing range entirely. “They aren’t following anymore and you’ve done…... your doing great!” he changed as he encouraged her slightly.

He looked ahead to find that they were almost out of the lull, shortly ahead of them he could see where the wind started to pick up again and the waves on the sea increased which was a good sign. If she could get them to or at least near that line then then he thought he could get them going again with little difficulty. He suspected a few chimes is all they needed but without knowing her limits he decided not to push her too far. “A chime or three is all we should need, so if you just give us what you can we will give it a go from there.”

The pirates worked on dropping their sails but he could see they still had nothing in them which was a great thing for the duo. By the time the edge of the wind reached them his little ship could be long gone and both ships knew it now. The lead Kamilla had procured for them was significant and he would finish their escape as soon as he was able to get the ship into the wind. With the situation changed into their favor again helped Finn’s mood substantially

When he turned back to Kamilla, he again noticed the blood dripping down the woman’s arm. “We need to check that arm of yours too. I’ll make sure the ship is ready now though ” He would check it later if she didn’t, doubtful it was too bad from the amount of blood on her arm, but for now he started to prepare the ship for a change in direction that he knew would come as soon as she stopped her magic. Already the ship started to tilt to starboard some as the waves picked up in size from the new wind, returning the normal bobbing motion that made him feel right at home on the sea. Laviku favored them once again, it would seem.

Finn’s words came as a relief to the mage, she’d put some distance between their ships and hopefully wouldn’t have to worry about another close call with an arrow, her arm still dropping from the last one. By now the pain had all but ceased as Kamilla continued to manipulate her res, a warm pleasant feeling creeping over her body inch by inch. Not a good sign, but a good feeling.

The mage was a bit annoyed with herself for only coming up with the idea to use her Reimancy at the last moment, had she done so before the pirates had caught up to her then they’d have avoided most of the trouble, though it was past now and dwelling on it wouldn’t stop her arm from bleeding. Finn’s voice came again, telling her they needed a chime or three more of wind, something Kamilla was sure she could provide, though she knew she’d need to stop soon.

By now most of the res she’d produced had decayed, so Kamilla was forced to delve within herself to pull at the well of djed once more, flinging small spurts of res back into the cycle which picked up in power once more, pushing the ship slightly faster along. In all honesty, she felt good, great even. It had been so long since she’d really gotten to use her magic, let alone for something genuinely important and useful. She felt empowered, reminded of the reason she loved magic so much and I touch with her real self for the first time in a while. It was wonderful and she didn’t want it to end.

Those thoughts were a red flag at the back of her mind, brown eyes widening as she realised what was happening. Overgiving. If there had been one thing her grandmother, Circe Gordon, had drilled into her granddaughter above anything else, it was the dangers of overgiving.

”Shyke” Kamilla muttered under her breath, forcing herself to release the spell by converting the remaining res into a final burst of wind before dropping to her knees, hands on her thighs and breathing rapidly. ”I can’t go any longer.” she managed to huff out, the euphoric feeling slowly fading away to be replaced with an aching pain, especially in her arms.

”I just need to...” A pause to try and calm her ragged breaths, but to no avail, ”... rest for a bit.” She’d been stupid to overextend herself so much after such a long period of barely flexing her magical ‘muscles’, while it had served its purpose, the aching of her body and the light ‘airy’ feeling of her head were proof that she’d gone too far.

There was a brief moment, for a tick or five, when everything including her sight went black, like standing up too quickly, the mage’s head swaying from side to side before she could catch herself. Hopefully, Finn would be able to do the rest from here on out.

Kamilla worked hard at keeping the wind going and their ship speeding along nicely but he wondered if she was tiring when the wind started to fluctuate drastically and the whole circle seemed to change along with the wind. The casinor lurched here and there as her circle shrunk and grew with her additions, but it did continue to push them on their way so he hung out on the back of the ship so he could watch over everything for his own peace of mind but it also gave him a chime to finally find the the ferret that had gotten itself trapped in a hole in the deck. Finn strapped a line over the hole for a temporarily cage.

The wheel was only lashed with one strap, the sails couldn’t be touched until she released her spell though. Somehow she had even coaxed a little extra wind into the sails which sent them even further along as Finn watched silently. Once the new wind started to hit the sails while the ship leaned over slightly from it, he knew that he could keep the ship going again without the use of her magic.

Before he could say anything to her though, he couldn’t make out what she said but she dropped to her knees exhausted and breathing heavily. He stepped over to the mast where he grabbed the water flask, as he turned to take it to Kamilla he realised that the mage didn’t look well at all. Finn jumped to her side and slipped an arm around her back as she swayed, she looked directly at him for several ticks but he doubted she even saw or knew him at that moment she may not of even heard him. “Kam, you ok there?” Thankfully it didn’t seem to last long before the glazed look in her eyes disappeared while his trust in the woman faltered for her own safety only.

He gently lifted and turned the woman around to where he leaned her against the cabin and she could be as far as possible from the edge of the ship. He felt she would be safe where he sat her and he would be able to keep a watchful eye on her while he set the sails again. “Rest here for a few chimes while I get us back underway again. You’ve earned the rest.” he told her as he set the water flask next to her and he stood up to take care of his ship.

The magic wind continued to carry the ship forward but it started to slow quickly too. He went to the boom and undone the line securing it. Slowly he let it out until the sail started to fill out and pull against him, once it did he simply leaned back against the strain while he looked back at Kamilla. As the ship picked up speed again he tied the boom down to hold it in place. He then went to the wheel and to set their course, because the pirates could still see them he used his fingers to measure a course that was off of their true course but it may throw the pirates off too. He would change course back to where it should be once they were well out of sight of the pirates.

Their ship bobbed in the growing waves as it easily cut through the water and the waves making a gentle splashing sound as they went, they made good speed at the moment while the pirate ship still appeared to be waiting on the wind to reach them. He suspected the getaway was successful but time would tell and for now he wanted to check on the mage.
