Greetings Sykans!
We all live in comfort zones. We know the place we dwell in well, and isn’t it always better to know the known always better than the unknown? Things could always get worse in trying new things, expanding ones horizon, and chasing dreams. The payoff for not taking action is that you stay safe. What is safe in a world and setting that isn’t supposed to be safe? The truth is there is a greater price in not taking action. That price paid is never knowing what could have been. Life is truthfully a simple balance of deciding between the safe and known and the dangers of the unknown. We are often conditioned to keep the status quo and move through life okay with what we have and satisfied in the normal.
That’s a terrible way to live one’s life.
The problem is inaction often keeps other people happy but maintains your discontent and leaves you feeling well… unfulfilled. There are doors everywhere in our world… just waiting to be swung open and passed through. The hard truth is as scary as that is, life is filled with potential doors opening everywhere if you care to actually look. Some of these proverbial doors open to good places, some open to terrible situations. One never knows. But taking the opportunity to step through doorways and expand your horizons leaves you moving forward in life and not stagnating by staying in place comfortable in your comfort zone.
Thus, this season’s theme is ‘Expanding one’s horizons’.
Good Luck! It is my hope you enjoy this season.
“Broaden your horizons.
They're the only ones you'll ever have,
so make the suckers as wide as possible.”
― Jennifer Crusie
Please keep these requirements in mind. If you go inactive in Syka or take a break for a season or two, you lose your free claims (that have been awarded in the past) because you haven't contributed to the community. If you have purchased your property and it's paid in full, you can feel free to go inactive with no penalty. If you are still paying on it, inactivity isn't an option without the loss of your property for missed payments. Please be aware job threads and placeholders can be no older than a season behind. Nothing will count or be paid for that is older. The list below is things you need to include in your Fall threading.
- ❖ Start a post in this thread keeping track of how many requirements you have completed.
❖ Set some major character goals. List them in the post below.
❖ Explore what drives your character in a very self-reflective thread.
❖ Pay Seasonal Expenses of Common or higher.
❖ Be active.
❖ Work on one or more recommended Syka Skills (Wilderness Survival, Tradeskill, etc) and increase it by 5 points.
❖ Include one of the NPCs listed in the NPC Masterlist in one of your threads.
❖ Utilize at least 2 storyseeds in a creative way. The storyseeds can be used in whole or part or could even be used as an inspiration for a whole different story arc. Folks will just have to be able to see the connections.
If you complete all these tasks successfully and fulfill the requirements, then you will get an award in the form of Quest Coupons of your choice. Incomplete threads do not count. These items must be completed by the end of the season.
“The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.”
― Christopher McCandless
Please remember, storyseeds are just ideas, hints, and nudges for you to craft a greater plot from. They are a starting place. Feel free to mix, match, and combine storyseeds and knock out more than one in one thread. For example, a survival situation could easily be combined with a deep-seated unbearable pain while hunting whales. Got it? Great!
- ❖ Set a major goal or a series of goals for your PC.
❖ Explore your spirituality somehow through self-reflection/conversation etc.
❖ Start a new building/craft/organization/sewing/research project.
❖ Set two IC Goals and achieve them. Please list them on your tracker.
❖ Invent a new personal ritual or rite.
❖ Achieve something you've been struggling with.
❖ Explore a new area up a dried river or stream back that usually isn't walkable.
❖ Pray to one of the Gods or Goddess and leave them an offering.
❖ Have an emotional breakdown or witness someone else's breakdown.
❖ Do something after dark that's out of your character's comfort zone.
❖ Teach someone a new skill to them.
❖ Make a new friend.
❖ Solve a problem someone else has.
❖ Solve a major problem in your character's life.
❖ Forage in a new place or something you've never foraged for before.
“I don’t want to listen to the myriad chorus of voices that call me to various horizons, regardless of how pristine those horizons might be. Rather, I would much prefer to listen for the voice that created the horizons.”
― Craig D. Lounsbrough
Syka is very hot this season. The cool morning and afternoon rains have vanished leaving sweltering sun that doesn't even seem to have relief from the heat beneath the rainforest canopy. Freshwater gets scarce as storage tanks and cisterns dry out. Even the sea is overly warm especially in the heat of the day. The threat of sunstroke and sunburn are a major issue. The struggle for anything cold is real, making Reimancers who can form ice popular.
The normally high humidity ratches up to a whole new level so that people fresh out of the shower or bathing pools do not dry out but get soaked with their own sweat almost immediately.
Tides are extremely low this season, making access to underwater ruins and new foraging grounds much simpler. Snorkeling is particularly good since sharks can't come into the extreme shallows and most of the bays and inlets are protected due to the lower sea level.
Surfing and kite surfing are particularly bad this season, as the waves offshore are calm and collected, not invoking any excitement in the resident water enthusiasts. Many people turn to hang gliding and other different sports not involving water.
Stairstep falls has a greatly reduced water capacity making foraging up the falls a whole lot easier this season than in past seasons. Many of the dried-up streams and even the reduced capacity of the Syka River make exploring up their banks easy walking. Residents are taking advantage of such things to spread out and explore more of the area around Syka and the dense jungles of The Maw.
I'm always willing to run a personal storyline for anyone who joins Syka for the season. People get such few opportunities to interact with their actual storylines in generic calendar situations within various domains, so in Syka I'd like to change that. I will be willing to run the following:
- Personal Quests
- Gnosis Threads
- Flashbacks & Future Foretellings
- Training Threads
Just let me know what I can help you out with. Syka might be small but we have had some really incredible storylines here in the past.
Happy Threading!
