This Monday was going wonderfully. I had an excellent weekend hanging out with one of my best friends, attending another friend’s book release party and playing a whole lot of Cards Against Humanity. (If you don’t know what that is, google it. I promise it will be worth your while.) This morning came with me well rested and sunshiny. Mondays are never awesome to me, so I should have suspected something was up. I am not usually a “not my problem” type of person, but today I had to resist the urge to tell in exactly those words that to my tenant. He started school here and he signed a lease for which he paid in full at signing. That lease is up in three months. I received an email from him today stating that the condo will be available ASAP as he has decided not to continue with the program he is in here. Further, he expects to be reimbursed for the remainder of the lease he already paid. I beg your pardon? He signed a lease. He paid it in full in advance. Once I have the keys in my hand, I’ll be happy to refund the security deposit; but the rent? What? Where has he lived in which that is acceptable? Because I am a nice person, if I happen to be able to get another tenant in there within a reasonable amount of time then I will refund those months. Frankly, though, the chances of that happening are super small. He knows we’re first time landlords. I feel as if he might be trying to take advantage of that and therefore the possibility that we just don’t know better. Only we do know better. The lease is clear and legal and he signed it. He initialed every bloody page. Humanity makes me sad sometimes. I’m not wealthy. I need a tenant in there. It allows me not to eat Ramen noodles for breakfast, lunch and dinner and to buy new shoes when the ones I have fall apart. There has never been a problem with the place, or if there has been he never contacted us so that we could fix it. He has my cell phone, my work phone and my email address. Also? It happens to be a really nice place. I just.. Ugh. Don’t try to squeeze me dry because you have made different choices. Unfortunately, I have to go with: not my problem. Someone needs to restore my faith in man. To end on a good note, I saw GoT second season launch last night and holy wow Davos. Also, Dani’s Spanish wine was delicious. |
