“Well, get crackin’!”

Aluria watches as Alexis taught the boy a few things about rabbits. She paid attention, as if she was going to need this information in the future. She adored rabbits, not necessarily all animals, but she like rabbits. Long, soft ears and a cute cotton tail at the end of their furry little butt. After her little lecture, she grabbed the boy's arm and dragged him away from the rabbits. "It's my turn. Let me tell you a little about rabbit dishes," she nodded towards the rabbits, wincing at the fact that they have to eat them. She saw the young boy already growing weary, and his attention was starting to waver. She coughed, loudly. The boy jumped, and his attention turned back to her. Triumphantly, she continued, "For this particular recipe, you're going to need rabbits, obviously," she rolled her eyes. "You're also going to need flour, salt, pepper, and cooking fat," she looked at the boy in the eye, with a serious glare, just to make sure he was paying attention. "You'll need to cut the young rabbit into proper serving pieces, like this," she gestured with her hands an example of the appropriate size. Hopefully, the boy was going to note this, because it looked like he wasn't getting it. Serves him right. "Okay, you'll need to roll the rabbit servings into a mixture of flour, pepper, and salt. You'll need to place the cooking fat onto a large pan, at least large enough to fit them all without it being crowded," she said matter-o-factly. "Make sure to put in the meaty chunks first, and let them fry for at least ten chimes, and then you can put the smaller pieces in. Make sure to occasionally turn the servings over! The pieces should be cooked after around thirty chimes," she finished, with a deep breath. About time! But she had more. "Want to know more about rabbit pie?" she asked, smiling. Before the boy could even protest, she waggled her finger. "You're going to need two to four rabbits, depending on their size. You'll also need one celery stalk, diced, and one large onion, also diced. Salt and pepper, and biscuits are also needed. For the gravy, make sure you have chicken, one medium sized onion, diced, celery, flour, salt, pepper, sage, and poultry seasoning," she said in one breath. She continued, "Soak rabbits in salt water in a preserved space overnight. Dry, cut up and stew rabbits with celery and onions for 2-3 bells. Add salt and pepper to taste, then strip meat from bones and put in 26-inch pie pan, add stock or gravy for moisture. Cover with biscuits. Heat on coals for 1 bell. For gravy, take reserved stock, add bouillon, onions and celery. Bring to a boil. Strain. Mix flour with an equal amount of water, add sauce to thickening. Season to taste with spices," she was almost ready to gasp for breath. She remembered about the herbs. "Finding herbs isn't so difficult. They tend to grow inland, not very close to shore. If you want to find them around here, you're going to have to walk pretty far, into a forest. They aren't rare, and many can be used for both cooking and medicine," she quickly added. With nothing more to say, she ran towards Sable and Alexis.

OOCHee hee, there wasn't much information on herbs, so I had to make it up. Hope it's okay...

Sable eyed her companions with a fair bit of amusement. As she scampered up, Alexis found a bottle of rum shoved cheerfully into her arms while another dangled from Sable’s bony hand by her shoulder. Aluria also enjoyed the lanky woman’s arm draped across her shoulders, bottle dangling near her chest.

The Lia took an exaggeratedly deep breath, grunting in satisfaction. “Do you smell that, ladies? That’s the smell of one drunk dead husband.” Nearby, the trader grumped and rolled his eyes, shuffling back into his cabin, cane stomping into the deck with each step. In the bustle of goods coming and going, the three women stood squarely in the way. Clouds rolled in, rolled over, sending shadows skittering over jolly Svefra, undulating ships, and cheerful sees. With practically a skip in her step, Sable led the way though the winding maze of ships back to their little slices of heaven. Only this time, she introduced her companions to anyone and everyone that would listen and seemed to be in no hurry to rush through pleasantries in order to get back to business.

Feet squarely planted back on a home deck, Sable gathered the rum and popped into her cabin to stow it. Coming back out, she turned a furrowed brow on the youngest member of their expedition.

“You can sleep on the deck at night, and you’ll be my crewman until we’ve returned to the Anchorage Flotilla. What do you two say to getting out of here and catching ourselves some dinner?”
"Oneday I wished upon a star
And woke up where the clouds are far
Behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me."

Alexis grinned and gave a tight nod, eager to get out onto open seas. Their recent affair had left her eager for adventure and she couldn’t wait to get to the cove.

As the boat left the harbour Alexis saunter out to the front of the boat, gripping the railings and letting the cool sea breeze tousle her blonde hair. She took a deep breath and turned back around. ”Anything you need me to do, captain?” she said to Sable, grinning widely. She placed a hand on Aluria’s head as she passed, ruffling her straight hair. She was in a good mood today, which wasn’t something unordinary. She leaned against a mast and folded her arms and resting one leg against the mast as well.

Her head snapped to the sea once more when she heard a small splash. She almost missed the silver fish that had leaped out of the water. She walked hurriedly to the rails and then turned her head to Sable. ”You got any rods or nets?” she inquired.

“You can sleep on the deck at night, and you’ll be my crewman until we’ve returned to the Anchorage Flotilla. What do you two say to getting out of here and catching ourselves some dinner?”

Aluria grinned. "Leave the cooking to me," she said humbly. She was finally going to prove her usefulness, to a certain degree. She knew of cooking and medicines, two very important aspects of an expedition.

Alexis came over and ruffled her hair, not something she would have particularly like on some regular occasion, but she decided to make an exception. She was feeling kind of bubbly. She almost turned before she heard a splash, and the scrambling of Alexis's feet shuffling over to the rail. Curious, she looked over and caught a glimpse of silverfish. As Alexis went over and asked for some nets or rods, she briefly ran over the recipes she knew of fish. A lot. Satisfied, she decided to make a fish soup. "Up for hot silverfish soup?" It sounded kind of gross, but it could actually make a good meal.

A hearty laugh washed out of an enormous, neighboring vessel, falling and rolling across the Sparkle’s deck with the chill early winter wind. The sound curled warmly along the curve of the ear, preparing the listener for the ensuing harmony of the echoing chorus. The lanky Svefra paused, one hand on the railing while the other removed one of the lines anchoring her vessel to a neighbor. Someday, someday she would find a family to share that sound with. Not too long ago she’d had her own Palivar full of all the love and laughter a person could ask for. And now…

Throwing off the last of the lines, those quicksilver cerulean hues skimmed across her youthful companions. Well, it could be worse. One had apparently forgotten she had a boat to take care of. The other…well, if she couldn’t do anything else, at least she could cook.

Aluria received an appreciative nod at her offer. Sable was getting sick of her own bland cooking.

Hands deftly manipulating lines to bring the mainsail up and prepare the jib, narrowed eyes darted to Alexis. “Feeling charitable this afternoon, Al?” Her gaze slid significantly off to the side, where the girl’s casinor patiently waited, lashed to the Sparkle. Sable would have to cut it loose to sail, and then it would happily drift along until some lucky new Svefra found it. Not to mention poor forgotten Lynn who still waited for her friend to return. Even should the lass want to leave it waiting at the Flotilla, it wouldn’t be there long with all these footloose and fancy free Svefra just dying to get a hold of another ship. If something wasn't being held down by its owner, its owner must not need it. A sharp tug sent a sail fluttering, and once it seated properly Sable cast a wink to her tow-headed companion before turning to tie the remaining line to a cleat. At her feet, Sib seemed to shake her little whiskered head in disappointment at the young lady, pitying the poor Tavan that waited forlornly aboard her own vessel.

OOC :
Sorry, I couldn't resist pointing out IC that Alexis forgot her ship. I almost didn't catch it either and had my post all written up with them starting to fish.

Alexis look over in surprise, having forgotten her casinor and her pet in the heat of the moment. She glanced at Lynn, who had rushed to the front of the vessel and whined pitifully. The ship was not too far away, as the currents were not too strong today. Silently thanking Laviku for the good weather, she shot Sable a cursory glare and stalked to the nearest part of the casinor to her ship. She balanced precariously on the rails, her arms out wide to try and keep balance. After a couple short seconds of gauging the distance between her and her casinor, Alexis jumped.

Her whole weight thrust forward as she leapt off the railings, and landed just short of the ship. However, her hands had been stretched wide and c lung onto the railings of her casinor. ”Crap” she muttered, almost inaudibly, before mustering all of her strength. She swung her body away from the wooded surface and then brought it back down again, while lifting her knees up to her stomach. Her feet hit the slippery wood and began to slide downwards.
As quickly as she could manage she scrambled with all her might and managed to get one foot up high enough to slip through the railings before the other gave way. She hung there for a little bit, one foot on the ship and the other dangling above the green sea.

Once she recovered from her desperate climb up the side of the ship she pushed herself upwards and swung her other leg over the top of the railings. She stood up straight, wobbling a little before looking back at Sable. ”I’m alright!” she yelled breathlessly. She was greeted by a nervous, panting wreck of a dog that slammed herself in Alexis’ knee. Alexis gave Lynn a reassuring pat on the head before going to prepare her own ship to sail.
After a few minutes they were sailing alongside Sable and Auria, an almost cocky grin on Alexis’ face.

While everything was happening outside, Aluria was getting used to Sable's kitchen. She looked at the cooking tools she had. She could easily make do with them, especially a dish like soup. Technically, she didn't know how to make silverfish soup, but she knew the gist of it. Any soup is generally the same, to her, at least. She would have to wait for the actual fish, however. She watched as Alexis appeared with her own ship, and wondered if she would actually get the fish from them.

OOCSorry it's so short. I've been really busy lately (school), and I can't seem to find the time to post. The next one will be super long, and checked through Word. Again, very sorry, but I felt I should at least post to keep it going.

Moving around to the helm, Sable watched Al’s antics with a kindred smile. Why do things the easy way when the hard way was so much more fun? Set to cast off the Anchorage Flotilla, Sable sauntered back across the deck and tossed Alexis the lines that had been attaching the ships. When she turned back, Aluria had vanished.

Nonplussed, the Svefra returned to the helm. She’d been all sorts of ready to start familiarizing the girl with the vessel and turn her into a proper sailor. They were going to go over ‘sheets, and luff, and wind direction…but the skittishly feisty lass must have wandered down into the cabin. Backing the sail, she brought the boom around to catch the wind that had previously been blowing straight into the ship and made the hull rotate out. They slowly cut across the breeze and followed Al away from the hustle of the floating town. A flash of teeth answered Al’s declaration of safety, and then she tacked on, “lead the way, let’s get some grub before Aluria realizes there’s nothing to cook on board except a few rats.”

Manipulating the mainsheet first, and then the jibsheet, both sails pulled taut and the little boat shot forward. Not long into the voyage in the general direction of Black Beach Cavern, she heard Al call out for poles or nets. Assuming this to mean she’d spotted something currently out of Sable’s sight, the lanky woman kicked the boom out to rob them of wind and slow. A few seconds later and the sparkle had drifted in close enough for Sable to catch Al’s ship with a grapple pole and secure it.

Snatching up a net and a spear, the vivacious woman leapt aboard and presented these as their options. Craning her neck to spot the fish, she handed off the spear. Mostly she’d just used it to fish in the shallows, but maybe Al could make use of it. “Are they close enough to the surface to net?”

But before Al had a chance to answer, the woman had whipped her head back around toward the sparkle. “ALURIA! If you want to eat, you’d better come catch something!”

Alexis leaned over the boat railings, peering into the water. She’d only learned how to fish with nets, she tossed the spear from hand to hand uncertainly. She saw a ripple in the water and the gleam of a silver scale and her face lit up a little. ”Looks like it.” she replied to Sable. She leaned the spear against the railings and took the net from Sable’s hand.
”I’ve never fished with a spear so I doubt I’d catch anything if I even tried.” she said with a sheepish grin. Taking the net she leaned over the edge of the casinor and set it up as accurately as she could in her uncomfortable position.
She had her stomach resting on the railings, putting pressure on her abdomen. After setting up the net the leaned back, letting out a breath of air.

”Right, now we do my least favourite part.” she said, frowning, and sat down legs crossed with her back leaning against the railings of the small ship. She waited for a good while, sighing and fidgeting. Alexis had never been patient, nor had she been good at hiding her boredom.
She leapt up and spun round when she heard the gentle splash of a bobbing float. She leaned back over the rail, groaning a little, and pulled out the small net. She’d caught a relatively average sized fish with gleaming silver scales.
Alexis grabbed a bucket which was resting beside the mast and put the fish into it, a proud expression on her face.

“ALURIA! If you want to eat, you’d better come catch something!”

Oh boy. Aluria sighed, and got up from where she sat. She grudgingly got out of the cabin, and walked onto the deck and stood there, watching Sable. It made sense; if she wanted to eat, she was going to have to contribute to catching the food. She looked around the casinor, wondering if there was anything she could use to actually fish. She didn't see anything that might have been of use, so she trod towards Sable and watched as Alexis caught a medium sized fish. She looked up with a triumphant emotion on her face, and Aluria couldn't help but grin as well. Somehow, this made her itching for a turn at the spear, even though she knew as well as anybody that she would fail. However, she couldn't help but think that she might get lucky, and catch something. Maybe a larger fish than Alexis's, and would that certainly make Sable proud, or at least acknowledge her a bit. She smiled at the thought, and even though she knew there wasn't much of a chance, she wanted to do it anyway. Ah, youth...

She felt the breeze pass on her face, and she felt uplifted. She sighed, and closed her eyes. What if Alex saw her now? She opened her twinkling eyes, and turned her gaze towards Sable.
