30th Day of Spring, 510 AV

ImageSyna had long since settled below the horizon, And Leth's light just managed to crawl above the parapets of Stormhold Castle, when Murdoch began his saunter through the streets and out towards the warehouses that sported The Spinning Coin. The walk there was well known by this particular man-about-town, well-oiled boots finding their way without much attention from their owner even in the darkness. He didn't spend a lot of time looking down alleyways or keeping an eye out for assailants - no, this was Syliras, and he had no need for such diligence. There simply weren't enough of that sort here to inspire any nervousness. Truth be told, he was the one everyone else should be looking over their shoulders at.

His steps were nearly silent, though, only ringing out when he unexpectedly crossed a loose paving stone. Nothing on his person jingled, though he had a purse filled with two hundred silver mizas. And two daggers. But he was practiced at ensuring he didn't reveal himself or his riches, had padded his purse where it was tucked inside his shirt, hidden away both blades as well as he could. In dark clothing, with his naturally bronzed skin and chocolate-hued hair, he was little more than a shadow on silent feet.

The Spinning Coin, though, was a familiar hunting ground. It was where he made most of his money, supplimented by the few coins here and there that he filched from tourists and drunks. He was a better thief than a gambler, but that didn't always translate into how much money he had in his pocket at the end of the day. He'd become adept at picking pockets and could usually coax the most basic locks to give up their treasures, but he was still wary of using his more dasterdly trades in Syliras. The Knights were notoriously intolerant of such things, and he liked living in this town. No point taking chances he didn't need to.

He nodded a greeting to the pair of men who guarded the door, exchanging pleasantries and confirming the gossip that he'd been absent the last two weeks because of a new girl. He was more than willing to take the ribbing, grinning sheepishly as if he were actually embarrassed by it, but he knew it made him seem more familiar to them, and lessened the chances of them seeing him as a threat. Whether he cared for Nel Sayo or not never entered his mind - it was simply information to be used.

He made his way through the bustle of the gambling house, glancing over to see what entertainments were to be had on the stage, but the pig races didn't pique his interest. No, he knew where he was heading. He wove gracefully through the crowds, accepting a drink offered by one of the lovely ladies who roamed the place and rewarding her with a kiss dropped to the corner of her mouth.

The card tables. Those were his hunting grounds, and he perused the players as hungrily as any wolf who surveyed their forests to find the tender, juicy rabbits.

(OK. Here we go.)

Sasin stepped in the door, eyeing the guards at the door. All he had to do was drop the name of the person who'd directed him here, and they let him be. He'd never been here before, but had heard of this place.

He wandered over to the card tables, where several games were being played. He noticed, among them, a young human who seemed quite at home.

(Short post, I know.)

[Spinning Coin] Sharking the cards (OPEN)

Postby Talhar on April 15th, 2010, 8:10 pm

Talhar had learned to play a few cardgames through his friends, his father and his friends's fathers. There weren't many things to do on the icy fields of Avanthal for simple pleasure besides throwing feasts and festivals at night. He learned to play cards at a relatively young age, he has no real proficiency in any of them though but he remembered he thoroughly enjoyed them.

He made his way through the city towards the warehouses where there was a place known as The Spinning Coin, a gambler's haven. You should know Talhar has never gambled in his life and he didn't really fully understood the concept of gambling or the dangers of it. All he heard was that that was the place to be to enjoy some cardgames and other fun activities. To be on the safe side however he only brought a relatively small fraction of his capital with him, 80 gold miza. For he had heard it was also a place where money was meant to be spend, alot.

He hadn't brought any of his javelins and neither had he brought his spear for it would be far too obvious and would possibly result in people fearing him but he felt the need to have a weapon on him for he was still carrying a rather large amount of money at a rather late hour. So he brought with him his curved, carving knife. Which he had tucked under his belt and under his shirt.

He arrived at the Spinning Coin and was confronted by two guards at the door, he was a new face in town and as such was greeted with suspicion and a bit of hostility. His build and face were tanned and were marked by the life had lead so far so they didn't try to take advantage of him even when they had found his leather coinpurse and especially not when they had found his carving knife.

They reassured Talhar that they merely took the knife away to ensure nobody gets hurt inside when someone gets drunk or rowdy and that it was to protect him as much as the other people. Talhar couldn't force back a grim smile when it was implied he needed protection. He even let out a sigh of amusement.
He finally complied but told them that it was a knife that he needed for his paycheck, and if it went missing ... " Let's just say I never forget faces. " He said whilst looking closely into their eyes.

With that said and his coinpurse retrieved he went inside, took a seat at the bar, ordered a drink and let his gaze wander around.

Murdoch took stock of the unfamiliar faces - there were always some, those who were used to rougher towns and less civilized ways. The Vantha at the door, acting surprised that knives were confiscated and suspicious that they wouldn't be given back. No need for them in here - the first scent of trouble and Gene would pound him into the floor.

He stood watching the tables, glancing down at the short little man who wandered up, looking a bit conspicuous in his black faux-assassin's outfit, and he snorted a little as he suppressed a laugh and padded down towards one of the more empty tables.

"Yuli, how've you been?" he said, giving the dealer a beaming grin. Yuli wasn't having any of it - he was an elderly man who was as hard and expressionless as a block of granite. Doc had played with him before, and knew that so long as he kept the cards out of his sleeves he'd be left to his own devices. The Spinning Coin wasn't the place to cheat, not with Gene stalking through the joint like a pissed-off mountain lion. But he could most certainly play the rest of the gamblers for all they were worth.

He pulled the coinpurse from a pocket inside his shirt and began piling his silver into columns of ten, ready for a night of cards.

It surely was a peculiar sight to behold, for a Vantha, there was a spectacular dance being performed, by the most loveliest of ladies, on stage but not a single eye was turned their way. Everyone had a serious face on and hardly any laughter was heard, except for the occasional triumphant laugh. They were all too busy focusing their eyes on their cards. Talhar could mark out a few cardgames he knew, like Stick'Em and Fraise.

He turned his back to the dancing and cardplaying and ordered another pint. He didn't came here to act all serious, Talhar had come here to have a good time.
He asked his bar-neighbour what this place was all about. The man, who Talhar found out by a small inquiry, went by the name of Jonas.

" This place ... well in leymen terms it's a place where you win or lose money by playing cards or other games. But in my own words I'd describe it as a place where stars are reached and holes are dug. If you catch my drift. "

" I see, so it's a place where luck makes the difference between a pile of income or a whole lot of loss. "
Talhar replied to Jonas.

" Here's a piece of advice Talhar my young friend, quit while you're ahead and never, never ever ever go in debth to keep playing. That's the safest way to lose fingers if not a whole lot more. "
He tapped his nose with his finger and pointed to a very anxious and shaky man, the man had clearly been playing badly and was getting more and more distressed by the minute, probably because of money issues.

Talhar swallowed his consternation, he felt sorry for the man but he knew he'd better stay out of it. He vowed in his own mind that that would not happen to him. He thanked Jonas for his teachings and shared wisdom and was about to go on his way towards one of the Portraits tables.

Talhar was worried for the man, but he had brought it upon himself and was not one of his problems. He shook it off, payed for the drink and made his way towards the Portraits corner.

Murdoch glanced up as Talhar approached his table, grinning brightly. "Hello there, friend," he said with a chuckle. "Come to see how much money you can lose to the Portrait dealer? Join us, please," he said, waving to one of the empty seats around the table.

Portraits was always easier to make money on when other people were playing it - then again, if you lost you were more likely to lose big time. Which was why Doc liked it so much.

"I'm Murdoch," he said, offering a hand, "and the dealer here is Yuli. He's not nearly so grumpy as he looks, but keep your hands away from his face 'cause he bites," he said with a friendly wink. The dealer just stared at them both with a blank expression and sighed as he waited for them to settle.

Talhar was greeted jovially by a man who seemed friendly and nice, Talhar responded by grinning nervously and shaking the man's hand.

" Heya mate, with my face of steel and hands of ... well cold sweat ... there is no chance I'll ... win ... any money. So yeah, I'm here to lose a buttload of cash. "

" Murdoch was it? Nice to meet you and your good ol' grumpy bear friend Yuli. "

Talhar said with a chuckle but a bit nervous aswell, since he wasn't *quite* sure Yuli didn't bite . He was the dealer afterall, perhaps he retributes in ways other than the eye can see.

Talhar didn't let his mind linger too long around that subject or it'd make him too nervous to play. Instead he ordered a Long Rosebud, a cocktail heavy on the alcohol but mixed in a way that it doesn't burn in your throat.

" Ok Murdoch, let's get things rollin' ! "

Sasin eyed the various games going on. He had no idea what they were, or how to play them. He over heard a man say to a Vantha" This place ... well in leymen terms it's a place where you win or lose money by playing cards or other games." He knew that much. What he wanted to know was just how to play. Curious, he followed the Vantha over to the portrait's corner. He sighed in relief. This, at least, he knew. The Vantha was greeted by a friendly man, who apparently went by the name of Murdoch

Hesitantly, he stepped forward. "Need another player, gentlemen? I'm Sasin."

Murdoch shook Talhar's hand, and then looked up with another roguish grin for Sasin. "Please, join us! I'm Murdoch," he said, waving him to a seat on Talhar's other side, "and I didn't catch this gentleman's name but he seems more than willing to lose his money so I'm okay not knowing," he laughed.

The dealer just sighed and waited for the two new players to get their money out.

"Have either of you played Portraits before?" he asked.
