Winter 50, 512
It was a normal, snowy day in Avanthal when Vaspira and Nate headed out of the city to search for some prey to hunt. Animals were somewhat scarce around the city, which meant they had to leave early in order to travel far enough to find game. They passed the guards at the Icewall Gates who nodded politely like they did every day. No one appeared alarmed or as though anything were out of the ordinary. And as far as Nate and Vaspira were concerned, it was a perfectly normal day. But that feeling of normalcy was not to last long.
It was a half bell’s walk outside of the city gates when two pairs of eyes simultaneously spotted the body lying amidst the bright snow. Nate Frostfawn would immediately recognize the leader of his Hold, Kayin, as the body lying in the snow. Vaspira was new to the city and may not have known exactly who this person was but she would recognize him as someone important. He was the leader of the Frostfawns, married to the head of the Icewatch, and oversaw the training of the Kelvic polar bears who served in the Icewatch. He was an important man by anyone’s measure and he was here before them, laying unconscious in the snow.
Kayin’s body was draped across the snow, a wound on his head leaked blood. Both Vaspira and Nate would notice the dripping blood. In an environment where liquid froze almost immediately, dripping blood would mean a fresh wound. Which meant there was potentially someone around, though if they looked neither Vaspira nor Nate would see anything beyond the city in the distance. There wasn’t even a weapon in sight that would explain Kayin’s injury.
The immediate question was what to do now. Return to the city guard and inform them that Kayin was laying out here most likely dead? Search for the killer? Try and see if they could revive the man? It was not a comfortable or easy decision to make. While Nate and Vaspira were forced to deal with the situation at hand, the snow was quietly falling and covering the body of a beloved citizen of Avanthal.
