Winter 50, 512

It was a normal, snowy day in Avanthal when Vaspira and Nate headed out of the city to search for some prey to hunt. Animals were somewhat scarce around the city, which meant they had to leave early in order to travel far enough to find game. They passed the guards at the Icewall Gates who nodded politely like they did every day. No one appeared alarmed or as though anything were out of the ordinary. And as far as Nate and Vaspira were concerned, it was a perfectly normal day. But that feeling of normalcy was not to last long.

It was a half bell’s walk outside of the city gates when two pairs of eyes simultaneously spotted the body lying amidst the bright snow. Nate Frostfawn would immediately recognize the leader of his Hold, Kayin, as the body lying in the snow. Vaspira was new to the city and may not have known exactly who this person was but she would recognize him as someone important. He was the leader of the Frostfawns, married to the head of the Icewatch, and oversaw the training of the Kelvic polar bears who served in the Icewatch. He was an important man by anyone’s measure and he was here before them, laying unconscious in the snow.

Kayin’s body was draped across the snow, a wound on his head leaked blood. Both Vaspira and Nate would notice the dripping blood. In an environment where liquid froze almost immediately, dripping blood would mean a fresh wound. Which meant there was potentially someone around, though if they looked neither Vaspira nor Nate would see anything beyond the city in the distance. There wasn’t even a weapon in sight that would explain Kayin’s injury.

The immediate question was what to do now. Return to the city guard and inform them that Kayin was laying out here most likely dead? Search for the killer? Try and see if they could revive the man? It was not a comfortable or easy decision to make. While Nate and Vaspira were forced to deal with the situation at hand, the snow was quietly falling and covering the body of a beloved citizen of Avanthal.

Vaspira walked softly beside her new found friend Nate, glancing slightly his way. She did trust this man beside her to a point, but she wondered if she could trust him completely. After all she did just met him, and they were going hunting, far away from the city at that. So, would it be wise to turn her back on this man during the hunt, or would it be best to keep her eyes on him? It was a decision she had yet to make, though she would whenever they arrived to where Nate liked to hunt.

The two hunters walked pass the guards at the Icewall Gates, they nodded their heads at the two. Vaspira nodded her head back; it seemed the right thing to do, though she was not for sure. Vaspira inhaled a deep breath of the frozen air, it shocked her lungs slightly, and she coughed a little but kept up the pace with Nate. They walked for thirty chimes, and then that is where things became interesting. Lying out in the white distance laid a man prominently on the frozen surface. The snow drifted lazily from the sky, as Vaspira stood there, slightly stunned at what she was seeing. As far as she knew, she thought that these Polar Bear Kelvics were supposed to be patrolling and keeping the city safe, this did not make any sense. Vaspira did not let it stop her though, she was used to seeing death, and she was a predator after all. She ran over to the body lying on the ground, blood dripped from a wound on his head, the red stark against the white snow. She had never seen this man before, but she had not been in Avanthal that long to really know anyone, but he did look like an important person.

Vaspira was not sure if they should stay there and try to help the man, or go get the Icewatch Guards. They were thirty chimes away, and the man could die before they could get back. Vaspira bit her lip, looking down at the injured man; she did not know what to do, so she waited for Nate to decide what the best course of action should be. Whether she agreed or not, that would be a different story.
