[White Elk Stables] Sickness... not so fun (Jesslyn)

--Summer 28th, 513AV--

Spirit was in a panic. Such a panic. Almost all the horses in the White Elk Stables... were sick! It had started with one, but quickly spread to most of the other horses inside. Including Silver, who happened to be stabled there. Quite a number of Frostfawns and Whitevines were aiding to help contain the disease, and Spirit was there as well. She knew she could put her medical and animal knowledge to good use at a time like this... if she stopped panicking about Silver.

She hugged her horse tightly around the neck, sad that the mare was feeling unwell, but she finally realized she had to actually help out during the crisis. She left the stall and went to aid Lusina in caring for the other horses. She was quickly assigned a pair to take care of mares to take care of. A pair that sadly didn't include Silver. She was also given some medicine to give to the horses, which they hoped would help them feel better. It was more the Whitevines working on that part of the process than Frostfawns.

Accepting the liquid, she approached her two patients and contemplated the best way to feed them. They were sick looking, though they tried to hide it like any animal. There was snot dribbling out of their noses, and overall... they looked quite down. It was sad really, and she pitied the animals greatly. It sucked getting sick, and she knew it.

Coming up with an idea, she grabbed an apple for each of them, and stuck the pills needed inside the food. All animals liked food, right? She went to the first, a brown mare, and offered the fruit to her. She sniffed it suspiciously, and was about to take a bite... before she turned away. Spirit stared at her in amazement, not quite sure why the creature didn't want to eat. Maybe it was because they were sick? She tried again on the other mare, this one grey and lean, with the same reaction. The girl pouted slightly, removed the pills, and attempted to brainstorm another way around this.

[White Elk Stables] Sickness... not so fun (Jesslyn)

Jesslyn stumbled into the stables. Her parents had already departed from her to go to their patients. Quickly walking and attempting to dodge both Whitevines and Frostfawns Jesslyn made her way to the voice of a woman and the sound of medication. No one paid heed to the blind Vantha but simply nodded or patted her on the shoulder if recognized.

Jesslyn wanted to spit at them all. Mostly because she didn't know if they were pitting her for trying to help or pitting her for her losses. Either way she contemptibly made her way to the woman. The woman had just got done handing something, medication, to another Vantha before assigning them to some horses. Just before Jesslyn could ask for help something was placed in her hand and she was dragged into another direction. "Don't worry Lusina! I got this one!" The voice was familiar but she couldn't quite remember the name.

"Jesslyn, you'll be here with Spirit. Spirit this is Jesslyn. You have two horses. Move quickly, some horses are only getting sicker. Spirit, stop trying to give them amino acids. It just makes them sicker!" Then the blur was gone. Jesslyn waved at her partner, "So.... I guess this is our set? Do you know their names?"

Jesslyn didn't want to make the situation awkward but it was heading there. And not because of the pace of everything but just the fact that she didn't know if this woman knew she was now a Skyglow and had been out of practice for almost two years. Or even worse, that her partner was blind. Jesslyn was sure that she would be a laughing stock to anyone elses partners.

"Amino acids... so you tried to give them fruit? That won't sit well on their stomachs depending on what's wrong. How bad are they?" Jesslyn slowly moved over to the horses. Letting a palm face down she extended her arm. The larger of the two made scuttling noises and snorted slightly. But after a couple seconds Jesslyn felt the head of a horse.

Gently she allowed her hand to pet the horse and move down its neck. Mumbling soft sweet nothing Jesslyn listened to Spirit and focused on the vibration of the horse. It's breathing was rocky, it's lounges and nostrils were full of extra snot, the temperature of the horse was hotter than it should be, and it's heart was beating slower.

"They need to sleep. We need to get that medicine in them so they can sleep. But we have to watch them if they do sleep. No telling what their reaction to the medicine will be. Do you know when was the last time they slept?" If the horses hearts were slowing down that either means they were close to falling asleep or they were getting worse.

Spirit was slightly surprised by Lusina's comment. Don't give them amino acids...? Right, fruit. She'd had no clue it wasn't good for them... well, her bad. She gave an apologetic grin, and greeted her new partner. "Hi!" she said, before awkwardly continuing "I didn't know fruit wouldn't be good for them... whoops..." She began thinking of other ways to get the medication to them, but all she came up with was... force feeding.

"I guess we could force feed them.." she muttered vaguely, before hearing her partner's comments. "Last slept? Well... They weren't sick yesterday, so they probably slept last night. None of the grooms noticed anything from what I know..." she answered, thinking on it for a moment. "Here... give this to the grey" she told Jesslyn, before turning to the brown mare.

She reached for the horse's mouth, first trying to hold the pill out, so see if this wouldn't require any force. The medicine was sniffed, and ignored. Too bad... the Frostfawn sighed, and grabbed the muzzle. She began prying the mare's mouth open, a challenge, considering how strong the creatures were. It took a few moments, but she slipped the pill into the horse's mouth. She let out a deep breath and rested her head on the stall door. "That was harder than it needed to be..." she muttered to herself, before again looking at her patient.

By now, it was sweating. Signs of a fever... hopefully the pill would help with that, but there was something else they could do. "Jesslyn... we should probably wipe them down, to try and cool them off. They look like they have a fever..." She glanced at her partner, looking for an answer, and to see how the older Vantha was doing in her endeavor. A back part of her mind was still worrying about Silver, wondering how the Windrunner was doing. Though she cared about all animals, Silver was like... family to her, and she hated to see the mare suffering. It was like having a family member sick, out of a large group of people. She wanted to care for her horse first, then the rest, but it was not to be. She sighed, but felt glad that neither Wind, Fog, or Apple was here.

Jesslyn was appalled by the idea to force feed them. She didn't say anything but simply narrowed her eyes in the direction of her partner. At the information about their sleeping habits Jesslyn nodded. Mumbling under her breath, "Do they expect us to simply give the medicine to the horses if we don't know what their reactions will be? Sounds like the Whitevines all right."

Jesslyn turned her head back to Spirit and took the medicine. It was a pill. Force feed them a pill. Jesslyn snorted but stopped short and focused on the blur of Spirit and the horse. It took a while but Jesslyn heard Spirit let out a deep breathe and mumble to herself. Too shocked Jesslyn didn't notice her own horse getting worse until her name was called.

Jesslyn mumbled under her breathe about brutality and quickly took charge of her own horse. The horse was breathing through it's nose but barley. Sighing at how gross this was going to become Jesslyn pulled her sleeve up and then shoved her fingers in the horses nose after petting down to it. At horse at first tried to shake her off but Jesslyn kept a hold of the horse and waited.

Jesslyn hoped the horse would open it's mouth. She knew they couldn't breathe through their mouths but she knew that the horse would likely open its mouth to try and bite her. The plan almost didn't work if it wasn't for her starting to pull her fingers out. The horse opened it's mouth and Jesslyn felt the hot hair of it getting close to her arm. Taking her now snot covered fingers out of the horses nose Jesslyn ran them down its bottom jaw and stuck her fingers in it's gum.

Trying not to get those fingers bit Jesslyn waited. Soon the horse had calmed down and started to breathe again. It's tongue stuck out the side of its mouth. Grabbing its tongue with the snotty fingers Jesslyn pulled it more. The horses mouth opened slowly and she could tell she needed to be quick or else she would get bit. Sticking her clean hand with the pill down its mouth, careful not to touch anything, Jesslyn stopped the pill on the back of its tongue then pulled everything away.

Just in time Jesslyn heard it's mouth snap shut and he got an angry headbutt. Jesslyn turned to Spirit again, "Sounds fine... and you think they would give me something to... get rid of this." Jesslyn raised both hands. One was slightly more yellow than the other while the other just looked lightly damp. Jesslyn was currently trying not to throw up. Taking a couple deep breaths Jesslyn ignored her patient for the time being. He or she wasn't happy but they would be once they got better... if they got better.

[White Elk Stables] Sickness... not so fun (Jesslyn)

Postby Spirit Frostfawn on July 25th, 2013, 1:47 pm

Spirit had watched Jess ‘feed’ her horse with a little bit of guilt. This might not have been the best way to give it to them… but she got the feeling that it wouldn’t have been good if the two of them wasted time going around and trying to find another way to get the horses to ingest the pill. ”Eh… there was probably a better way to do this…” she admitted, slightly disliking having to force anyone to do anything. Still… it was for their own good, right? ”I’m sorry… I’m better with dogs than horses, in general” She gave her partner an apologetic smile before focusing on her next comment.

She frowned at Jesslyn’s saliva-covered hands, and then at her own. ”Ummmm” she glanced around, spotting two potential things. The saddle blankets would work, but getting spit on them maybe wasn’t the best idea… and it would probably end up with her having to clean them. Instead, she focused on a pile of hay, and she pointed at it. ”The hay works, I guess? Though it might be a little dirty…” The Frostfawn shrugged slightly and walked over to the pile. She used the coarse stuff to ‘dry’ her hands in a way, though they ended up with several pieces of straw stuck on. And her fingers were still quite damp. She glared at them, and, giving up, wiped her hands off on the saddle blanket. ”I guess I’ll clean that later…” she muttered, more to herself than anything.

That done, she returned her mind to the horses they were supposed to be treating. Their bodies were still covered in sweat, though they looked a little bit better… though the groom couldn’t really tell. She picked up a tool for wiping the liquid off, then grabbed another one for her companion. ”Here… use this to scrape the sweat off!” she said with a nod, and began her job. She moved it in kind of diagonal striped across the mare’s side, pushing the liquid off the hair and onto the floor below. It would take more than a few chimes to finish the entire job, so Spirit decided it would be a nice time to start a conversation….

”So….” she asked, frowning slightly into the horse’s side ”What hold are you from? I’m a Frostfawn… but I guess that’s a little obvious. Are you a Whitevine?” She couldn’t quite remember the woman, though it was a possibility that they’d met before… and she knew most (in her opinion) of the Frostfawns. A lot were basically family. She stood on her tippy toes to look over into the next stall where Jess was working, in wait for an answer. She was still scraping, however, down the mare’s wide back and over her sides. She contemplated her companion being a Whitevine, then realized that also didn’t make sense, considering the woman’s previous comment about the hold. She frowned, confused. Maybe Jesslyn was a Frostfawn? Who knew.

Additional Notes :
The current medical technology in Mizahar doesn’t have room for people to intensively study a knowledge or concept that needs modern equipment to be discovered. So no amino acids here, no one would know what they even were.

And a piece of advice about contagious horse diseases: horse stalls are thoroughly cleaned, especially of bodily fluids, because virus are almost always transmitted from one horse to another in this manner. Also, it's fine to feed a horse most fruits even when sick, but since Spirit acknowledged the contrary IC I gave it to her as a lore. I would’ve liked to see Spirit learn those facts, but :(.
