"But the Knights are here to keep order, aren't they? Do patrols and investigate crimes, among other knightly duties." Well, yes. Kane thought on it, speaking internally, But there have been and always will be knights here, and there are so few elsewhere... Soon enough though the barkeep had come by, bearing their order, and at the behest of Maya he took up his own flagon, raising it slightly,

"Cheers." After replying in turn, Kane took the flagon to his lips, enjoying the ale as he continued on his thoughts, searching for a reply that would embody his thoughts more accurately, allowing the bitter beverage's flavor to make itself at home in his mouth. "It's just that I want to become a knight to do good." Pausing for a moment, he pondered whether to return to his ale, though he decided otherwise, "It's not that one can't do good here, there's just... less need." Returning now to his mug, he glanced to Maya as he finished, the flagon finding its way back down to the counter, "I might try for the southlands, the deserts. I remember I'd tried my hand at learning a bit of the language."

Maya took a sip from the Ale, not used to the bitterness. She very much preferred alcohol of the fruity variety, but with present circumstances, she could not spare the Miza. She downed the Ale rather quickly, pouring herself another mug-full. Careful, Maya. Inebriation is the enemy of reason. She quietly sipped this second mug, listening to Kane talk.

"Southlands," She said. "That's a bit far from Syliras." Maya grinned, putting a half-empty (or half-full) cup down on the wooden counter. "How long do you plan on staying here and training?"

As she spoke, she looked around the room, taking in the atmosphere. A few men at the counter, and a couple of women as well, seemed to be regulars, and were quietly sipping at their beverages. However, the customers sitting at tables were more prone to conversation, though there seemed to be a hushed air about the place. Most everyone was speaking in whispers.

"Southlands," she'd started, "That's a bit far from Syliras." Quite far, in fact, farther than Kane had traveled yet, his only real journey having been that from Sunberth to Syliras. Still, he'd hit the road once, despite how ill equipped he was for the journey, though he felt he could do it again. "How long do you plan on staying here and training?" With a smile he answered simply,

"As long as it takes. The time required to become a knight varies with each squire, depends on their skills and knowledge." Sighing momentarily, he watched as she scanned the room, her mind undoubtedly going about its own machinations, still probably a little bit too paranoid for her own good. Deciding to continue the conversation, particularly while they were on the subject, "What about you? Surely you have plans beyond Syliras?"

"What about you? Surely you have plans beyond Syliras?" It was like Kane was peering into her mind. Talking about all these plans got Maya thinking about where she was headed, what she was going to do with her life. She downs the rest of her Ale, thinking of something to say, and grasps the pitcher, pouring herself another. Careful, Maya. Temulency will lead you to a loose tongue and a looser Bryda. She snickers at her little joke, but takes the hint and leaves the mug full on the counter. She rubs her chin, thoughtfully, and answers Kane.

"Truthfully, I'm not really sure. Although eventually," She grins, "I will be the most known gaffer in all of Syliras, perhaps even Sylira, and even the world!" In the excitement of the 'grandiose' speech, she grabs the flagon and drinks half of it before she realizes she even started to drink it. "Whoops," She says, revealing her low tolerance for alcohol. She slams the mug down, causing some of it to spill, and looks back at Kane.

"I'm all for detours, though. Perhaps I will become an adventurer, travelling the world in search for... for... something..." Her words slur as the two mugs of ale catch up to her.

Squinting slight as she took off with her plans, he couldn't help but draw back slightly, hoping to avoid some of the ale that'd escaped her flagon as she brought the vessel to bear. While he'd no problem with enthusiasm, Kane couldn't help but feel a slight discomfort when wet, just something he didn't care for. He did manage a smile though, offering a pleasant gesture at her ambitious plans, "Perhaps." With a slam she'd returned the mug to its place, causing Kane's gaze to immediately shift, jumping as the clamor came about. She continued on, her words beginning to slur near the end. Her encounters with alcohol were not as many as his, it seemed, of course, it could also have been attributed to him not finishing off a mug as soon as he'd gotten a hold of it. Curious, Kane soon inquired, "What kind of something, if you don't mind my asking?" Taking another sip of his ale, he pondered on whether he should add anything to the question, and soon enough he did, "I mean, you don't seem the 'adventuring' type. You've no motivation to go into the wilds, got everything you need here in town."

"What kind of something, if you don't mind my asking?"

"I... I don't know... Something... Magical?" Maya thought hard about what she meant. In fact, she didn't even know what she just said in the first place to spark this conversation. Something about adventuring...

"You always hear... In the ballads... Great men and women, making a name for themselves, going out there and accomplishing... Things..." A coherent thought was finally being formed in her mind. "You know, great things... Like, slaying an evil monster, or recovering treasure from an ancient ruin..." She lifts her mug and takes a shallow sip, so as to allow her to continue talking. "I just want to be... Known, y'know?" She smiled. "Who knows, maybe I'll discover some ancient glassblowing technique... Or... Or find some magic artifact that will give me some... Some power, or... I don't know..." She looked down, at the floor, quiet now. What will you do, eh? What are you good for? You don't know anything outside of the forge. What makes you think you can be someone? It takes a certain amount of talent to be famous. She takes another gulp, drowning her thoughts in a waterfall of bitter liquid. She gently puts the cup down, this time not reaching for another.

Maya soon embarked upon a small speech, trying to explain her earlier statement though Kane could soon tell that the alcohol was beginning to take its toll on her, that or she just couldn't form sentences that well anymore. Likely the former, though Kane wasn't too sure with people hereabouts, such odd folk they could be. Still, it seemed she had done little in the wilds of Mizahar, though he couldn't boast much to his own name either. Still, as she came to a close she became somewhat distant, and Kane looked over to her as she finished, wondering why she'd ceased, instead taking another draw of her ale, and Kane, responding to a question she'd asked, likely not expecting an answer, "I think I understand. You want to have a purpose." Taking a sip of his own ale, he soon continued, "You want to feel like you have a meaning for being." Looking about himself, Kane offered a glance over the tavern's patrons before he finished, turning back to his mug, though only muttering under his breath, "It's what I'm looking for."

"You want to feel like you have a meaning for being." Kane said, and muttered something else, though Maya could not hear it. There seemed to be a few more people in the tavern now, and it seemed a bit less quiet than it had when they came in. She sighed, and answered;

"Exactly... More than just a... a... good glassmith..." She smiles, chuckling softly. "I just g-got a job, and in celebration, l-look at what we're talking about..." A slight smile stays on her face as she examines the grains in the wood counter in front of her. "I'm sorry for being such a... well, for such... such a... a... I'doh'know..." She takes her index finger and follows the patterns of the counter, losing her interest, or her attention, in the current conversation.

As she apologized for some reason or another Kane finished off the brew in his flagon, not truly finishing her statement, rather finding something else to occupy her mind, tracing something or another on the counter with her finger. Reaching for the pitcher, Kane refilled both of their mugs, speaking as he did, "No need to apologize." As he topped off the second mug, he continued, "There's always the Order, though I doubt that's your calling." Setting the pitcher down slowly, he returned to his own mug, taking another draw from it, "I'm sure you'll find whatever it is you're looking for."

Maya sighs, appreciating Kane's sentimentalism. "I guess... But maybe.... maybe I'm not looking for anything, y'know? Maybe I have everything I need... and when I go off searching... I'll realize what I'm missing..." She smirks, and pours herself another mug of ale, the pitcher now about three-fourths empty. "Sounds like a cliché epic..."

Taking another gulp, she shakily places the mug back down, and says, "I uh... Well, the... What I'm trying to..." She sighs, looking down into her earthenware flagon. "I don't feel so good..."
