A surreal cavern city inhabited by Symenestra where stones glow and streets are reams of silk. Cocoon like structures hang between stalactites and cascade over limestone flows in organic and eerie arabesques. Without a Symenestra willing to escort you, entrance is impossible.

Sosicly read the words in a mixture of horror and even more horror. It could not be serious. But no matter how many times she read the words they would not change, the text was truly informing her of what was edible.

”When we have run out of food we have found that someone can eat whatever is necessary to keep going. In this case we have discovered insects, bugs, and all manner of these things are edible, including worms.”

She made a face, and flipped ahead a bit. Only skimming over the text, ”We’ve tried a manner of insects once we got to the city proper. But in the wild it is not advised to test an insect for an antidote may not be at hand. Things that can attack, sting, bite, scratch, etc. and things with wings are not good food. Preferably ants, worms, non-horned beetles, cockroach, cricket and insect larva are the most sought after.

These creatures are not hard to find either. Any tall grass, moist soil, any rotted wood, trees, anything can hide them it is just a matter of chasing after them with vigilance. But they don’t make up for food, expect to get ill if other food is not found within a day or two.”
And now she was glad she hadn’t eaten before hand. Desperate measures she guessed, but she hoped her own journey would not need those things. In her own book she made quick notations, writing down the edible things with obvious reluctance. Again she skipped pages, skimming through the text and only finding it began to speak of the ill companion and the bug he had eaten. Shelving the text, Sosicly wrote which book they had come form and where, then got up pulled another journal from her stack.

The librarian had pulled them with a questioning look but Sosicly had only offered a smile. A gleaning was her goal, though not necessarily for the good of her people but for the good of herself. She hoped to see if one of the other cities had medicine she would need. Alvadas had not but maybe Lhavit would. If she needed to she would try Wind Reach but she did not think that would be possible for her.

Making a little dash for her to begin another paragraph Sosicly flipped open the book, hoping it would be something other than bugs. Because she’d rather not think about it if at all possible. Red eyes skimmed the page, looking for words that would jump out and prove useful. This one looked promising, an encounter with some beast of the region and how they were able to both eat and kill it.

I’ve found that after this instance, anything and everything is a weapon. A branch becomes a club. A food knife sharpened for a better pierce. Truthfully any wood in the Unforgiving is a weapon. A sharpened point for a spear, sharp rocks tied to a stick or rounded ones to a club. Anything that can do damage. A torch in a pinch helped us a great deal, the beast seemed surprised. The ashes worked well to blind it. It went on to say how the managed to corner and kill it but she skimmed ahead, not really wishing to read about anything but the essentials. Her nail nearly ripped a page as she stopped and tapped on the word, reading with renewed interest. And any animal kill can be used to the fullest. If you can keep the pelts, use all the meat for food, fat can be used to burn though it smells terrible and we aren’t sure if it attracts anything yet. The bones make much better tools or weapons than the wood as well but are harder to shape. If not for the kill we would have never had the tools to continue after the kill. It was a terrible loss and a win with Alesane and Vysiah gone.

Closing the book with a small thump Sosicly made her notes, and plucked up the next with a slow shake of her head. Too many of the journals said how one would never come back, it was not promising. Her mind flashbacked to her own travel to Alvadas. It had been a larger group. Veladra, their guides and the others they had met up with. Luck had been on their side.

Making another dash, she skimmed her next book. This one the words blurred together. Something about tracking, and mostly talking about the Unforgiving itself. She did not care to read about trees. Laying her cheek on the desk Sosicly let her quill fall and closed her eyes for a moment. Lately she had been more tired.

Words of Travelers

Sosicly woke to a hand on her shoulder that felt like the terrifying claws of her dreams. Jerking up she was startled to see the librarian, Calvino peering down at her. “Are you finished with these?”

She shook her head sheepishly, “You were not asleep long but don’t fall asleep on the books, you will damage them.”

With that the old man continued away, having left her the next stack of requested journals and taking the old ones. Sosicly rubbed her eyes and noted the only book she had fallen asleep on was her own. When she rubbed her cheek next it came away with faint ink stains and she sighed before cracking open her next book, jumping right back into the books telling of their kill.

The beast that took Alesane and Vysiah was one I was not familiar with, our guide had been the one to inform us of what the creature was. A

  • Snakes

Sosicly closed the book, and reached for another with a yawn. She rubbed her eyes tiredly and look down at her notes.

If you feel I've graded you unfairly, Shoot me a Pm and We'll work it out! I'm still new at this, ya know :)
