Traveling Performance Group Idea

First of all, I completely respect a veto on the grounds of it being too dangerous--we could start in one city and try to level up our WS before we go anywhere. And personally, I would vote for a legitimate show rather than one with pickpockets, if that would change anyone's mind.

But I took a look at the math, and travel 1375 miles at 4 mph would take 343 hours, not days. If you put that at 8 hours a day (travelling for 12 hours on average but accounting for inevitable delays) it would take 43 days to get between those two cities. Pushing it down to the walking speed that google cites, though still inferring a caravan so we wouldn't actually be walking for so long (ouch), would still put us at 55 days. That's a long time to go without pay, but it's not an entire season. Taking the lower travel times into account and the fact that Sylira is the "safest region to travel through" according to the lore, couldn't it be at least plausible?

I'll admit that I'm a noob though, and if there is a precedent that we need to abide by I will certainly respect that.

If we do have to stay put, I like the idea of Alvadas. :D Though I would not object to Zeltiva or any other.
I will be slow posting through this Spring. :( Sorry for any inconvenience or delay.

That's why we started this thread to hash out the details and talk about what would work and what wouldn't :). So Alvadas is an option too, being the city of Illusions, but Zeltiva has more performers there currently. We could start in Zeltiva and do as Twister suggested with random performances drawing attention and training in some of the skills needed to take the crew on the road eventually. We could do a more legitimate show as well, and I think eventually if we start out somewhere and build up our skills travel would be plausible as Cassandra said.

Currently Alvadas is a bit low on players. I'm rebooting the city, so I have time to focus on you guys if you decide to start there.

Alvadas is all about performance and art, so you'll have no shortage of people to show you tricks of the trade.

From there, it's a pretty easy boat ride to Riverfall, Kenash, or Syliras.

Traveling Performance Group Idea

Postby Brandon Blackwing on December 18th, 2013, 5:11 pm

Not sure if this could be useful, but I was thinking, a performance group usually carries a lot of stuff they use in their acts with them right? A small podium and all the like. So I thought you'd need a carriage pulled by an ox or something to take all that with you. Not sure though, but it will also come in handy when one of the performers has caught an illness or something. Then you could place the person on/in the carriage and you didn't have to wait for them to recover to travel on. (We're talking pretty serious injury/illness here).

Also, by placing all the stuff in the carriage, the performers' hands are free and they will be able to successfully counter assaults by rogues and monsters. Not always, but the success rate will be higher...I think.

One quick addition to what has already been said here needs to be stated.

Groups like this have startup costs. We're talking equipment, props, if traveling a wagon and horses, all the stuff inherent in theater groups. Even non-traveling groups have significant startup costs at times. You'll need to not manifest your gear out of the thin air. Plus we have a long standing rule on Mizahar that newbies can't pool starting funds and resources for endeavors like this because it is not fair to the people that start as individuals.

If you group up in thread, in game, and organize and start this as a business with a business plan submitted or one individual owner takes out a loan for all the gear, then that is more than acceptable. It just all needs to be tracked.

Thank you for the advice Gossamer, I thinking grouping up in game would work out best and make for interesting threads as well. We will keep in mind the equipment costs and be sure that nothing comes out of thin air!

Traveling Performance Group Idea

*facepalms* Thanks for correcting my math Cassandra, I am terrabad at it as you can see.

I think the idea of staying stationary for a while is good as well, if you do get together enough PC's to form a merry band and are able to settle in somewhere and flesh out the skills necessary for travel you'll have made it a heck of a lot farther than anyone else who threw out the idea of travelling performers before you, just wanted to drive home the travel concerns.

Okay so since we are going to be stationary for a bit, we need to choose our first city wisely. I just found out that I can't have two PCs in the same Domain so Zeltiva is out since Cynnya wouldn't survive in the wilderness if I tried to move her. Alvadas sounds good as the city of illusions and performers where the group could gain some good skills. We wouldn't want to put any undue pressure on Tapestry though, so we should get the details worked out here before we start there. How does Alvadas sound to other people?

No worries all. I'm happy to have you in the city. I'm going to be doing a lot of refurbishing, so ya'll are dropping in at a great time to get situated.
