[Antinous Training Grounds] A Silent Storm

Bitt tentatively flexed his fingers, using the motion to slightly adjust his grip on the quarterstaff. Strange, Bitt thought, that the presence of the weapon in his hands felt less alien with each passing day. An extension of himself... well, not quite. In many respects, the squire recognised that he was still a long way from adequate.
But that's why I'm here.
Tensing his muscles slightly, Bitt settled comfortably into low-guard. His opponent, who stood a sensible distance away, mirrored the stance. Ser Crowe: Syliran Knight, and Bitt's patron. He too wielded a quarterstaff, which was appropriate. It was the older knight's duty to mould the young squire, teaching him the skills he would one day need to join the order himself. Today was no exception.

Crowe locked his gaze with Bitt's and, when he was sure he had the squire's attention, gave a slow, deliberate nod: the signal to start. Bitt had sparred with his patron before, but to describe their brief, brutal exchanges - in which Bitt would come out thoroughly bruised - as sparring would be true only as a technicality. This was to be their first, true, spar. Crowe was the superior fighter, of this Bitt had no doubt, but this was not a competition. His patron would restrain himself, matching his skill roughly to Bitt's own. This was training, plain and simple. The two men began to circle each other: the fight had begun.

The Antinous Training Grounds had sand scattered in the areas designated for practice combat, and it grated softly beneath Bitt's boots with every step. He had been feeling incredibly anxious in the moments leading up to the spar, but now that he knew an exchange was imminent, he felt at ease... too at ease; he was excited.
The Fury...
Bitt's name for his psychological condition. A lust for combat. A mental proficiency. There were some, undoubtedly, who would view it a blessing. The capacity to lose yourself in a passionate frenzy of violence... it terrified the squire. It was not something he wanted, nor was it something he knew he had, not until recently. A curse. Bitt's breathing intensified, and he sucked in deep gulps of air.
Focus Bitt! Focus! Focus! Focus!
As he mentally scolded himself, the squire shook his head, as if to dispel the sensation. Crowe waited patiently while his squire struggled with his inner demon. He knew that Bitt valued the discipline he had been working so hard to nurture, and the older knight sympathised with him. More than that, Crowe was proud of his squire's willpower and determination.

[Antinous Training Grounds] A Silent Storm

Postby Bitt on May 13th, 2014, 10:30 am

An ocean. An endless, sprawling ocean. It was dark, and hinted at an unimaginable depth. On the horizon, heavy clouds loomed, their shadows standing impossibly stark against the pitch-black sky. There was no moon. No stars... and it was cold. A lone beacon shone. Dull. Barely a glow. An island, barely more than a large boulder. It stood alone. Bitt. A mighty wind howled. A flash of light. The world shook... I am scared.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bitt's internal struggle continued, and the squire felt as if his mind had divided into two. One half braced itself, taking refuge deep within Bitt's subconscious, knowing that it was about to weather a colossal storm. Alone and isolated, he was gentle, he was reason, he was discipline, and he was mercy. The other half rushed to the surface, as if freed from the shackles of imprisonment. He was brutality, he was delusion, he was disorder... he was fury.

Bitt leapt forward, quickly closing the distance between himself and Crowe, and the quarterstaff in his hands darted out like a striking serpent. A basic thrust: simple in its execution, but deadly in its efficiency. It was a technique that took advantage of the staff's length, an attribute that gave it a larger range than most other close combat weapons. The motion, which Bitt had practiced for bells on end, utilised his entire body to transfer power into the weapon's tip.

Crowe had expected the attack, and because of its simplicity, was well prepared to face it. As Bitt's own weapon sneaked past his guard, the older knight braced himself and, using his own staff, pushed against Bitt's, knocking it out to the side. Immediately, he twisted his grip so that his staff pressed against the top of Bitt's, and slammed it into the ground.
Crack
Crowe turned on his heel, intending to counter with a thrust of his own. In that moment, he was somewhat disappointed with his squire; Crowe had used this technique on him before. The older knight was forced to rethink that assessment when he saw Bitt's recovery.

As his quarterstaff impacted the ground, Bitt pushed against it, driving the butt home. The squire then used this purchase to push himself backwards, jumping out of reach of Crowe's counter-attack. He landed lightly on the balls of his feet and re-assumed a basic low-guard stance.
Not bad lad, Crowe thought, as he quickly returned to his own stance. In that moment, the older knight had to face a harsh truth. While his weapon skills were indeed of a higher quality than Bitt's, he was getting old, and the young squire's physical condition already surpassed his own.
Let's see if how you handle this, lad. Crowe sprung forward, and the older knight thrust with his own weapon. It was time to take his squire's training to the next level. He aimed for Bitt's sternum, and had no intention of pulling the blow; if it connected then the squire would be hurt. Badly.

[Antinous Training Grounds] A Silent Storm

Postby Bitt on May 13th, 2014, 1:09 pm

The storm head draws ever closer. Rumbling, tumbling, sheets of darkness. The ocean churns. The water grows reckless. An icy chill. The salty spray. There, in the distance. The disturbance. It comes. Higher. Higher. It's moving so fast! A mighty wall. The ocean grows. Closer. Closer. The wave crashes into the stone. Shock. Wet. Cold. The cries grow louder. The beast approaches.... I am alone.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Crowe's sudden offensive took Bitt by surprise, and he was not prepared for it. The older knight's thrust slipped past Bitt's guard, and the young squire motioned his staff to counter it in the same way his own attack was. He was too slow. Instead of knocking Crowe's quarterstaff out wide, he only managed to hit it off centre, and the resulting blow slammed into his left shoulder.
crack
Something was fractured, and Bitt roared out as lances of pain shot through his system. The force of the attack sent him reeling, and he stumbled backwards. Bitt let his left arm hang limp, holding his quarterstaff in his right hand.

Crowe wasn't finished. As his squire stumbled, the older knight withdrew his quarterstaff, changed his grip on the weapon, and launched a powerful, overhead strike. Unlike before, Crowe was prepared to pull the blow if needed, but he was curious to see how his squire would respond to the threat in his obviously injured state. The fight was over, he knew. He was pleased with Bitt's performance, content that the squire's training was progressing at a steady rate.

Without time to think, instead acting on instinct, Bitt grit his teeth and forced his damaged left arm into action. Bitt raised his quarterstaff in both hands, holding it horizontally in an overhead guard. Not expecting his squire's reckless action, Crowe was unable to stop his attack, and the two weapons collided with a violent crack! Bitt released a noise that was halfway between a grunt and a gasp, and the young squire's knees buckled under the pressure. He fell backwards, hitting the ground with a thud. Silence.

"You alright, lad?" After a couple of ticks, Crowe got over the shock. What Bitt had done was incredibly stupid, and he was likely in a lot of pain. There were things more important than scolding, though. He had to see if the squire was concious. "C'mon lad, let's get you to-"
Bitt snarled.
It was a deep, animalistic noise, like a stray dog that had been backed too far into a corner. Slowly, the squire raised to his feet, holding his quarterstaff in a low-guard. How he was able to ignore the pain in his shoulder was a mystery to Crowe, but Bitt's grip was so tight that his knuckles were turning white. It was then that the older knight saw Bitt's eyes: they spoke of murder.

[Antinous Training Grounds] A Silent Storm

Postby Bitt on May 13th, 2014, 2:18 pm

The tempest was upon him. Gale force winds wailed in a deafening cacophony. Surges of raw power tore themselves from the abyss in a frighteningly beautiful flash of light. The ocean was in chaos, and waves slammed relentlessly into the stone. Time lost all meaning. Slowly. Slowly. The storm began to wear away at the rock. Slowly. Slowly. A piece here, a chunk there. The occasional blast of heat sending a shower of gravel into the restless waves... I can feel myself slipping.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Crowe immediately grew weary of his squire, and he unconsciously resumed low-guard.
"Lad, listen: the fight's over. Do you under-" Letting loose a feral scream, Bitt launched a reinvigorated offensive. At first, Crowe jumped backwards to dodge the initial thrust, but the squire was relentless; quickly alternating between thrusts, sweeps and cuts. It was all the older knight could do to parry his young opponent's attacks.

Finally, Crowe was able to execute a proper counter. It was a thrust, and as Bitt's quarterstaff slipped past his guard, he knocked it to the side and slammed it to the ground. This was when things got ugly. As Crowe motioned to slam Bitt's quarterstaff, the young squire released the weapon, letting it fall from his grasp. The older knight overcompensated and was thrown off balance, teetering forward with his weapon pointed towards the ground. Bitt rushed forward, growling with a savage intensity, and smashed a powerful uppercut into his patron's stomach.

Shock.
Disbelief.
The air rushed out of Crowe's lungs in a huff, and the older knight doubled over even further. A sick, twisted grin crept onto Bitt's face at the sight of his patron's exposed neck. The young squire balled both of his hands into a massive fist, which he raised triumphantly over his head, preparing to slam it down into-

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Still, the storm raged on. The stone was but a pebble. Almost nothing was left. Looking down, he saw images in the water. Clear. But how? Despite the turmoil of the ocean. Clear. Despite flashes of lightning. Clear. He saw terrible things. He saw violence. He knew it was his doing... worse, he knew he was enjoying it. The huddled figure of an old man, a sad look on his face... Crowe. No. You taught me control. No. You taught me the importance of restraint. No! You taught me dicipline. No! I. Wont. Let. This. Beat. Me. No!
The wind died down.
NO!
The clouds parted.
NO!
The ocean grew still.
NO!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
The blow Crowe was expecting never came. Tentatively, he raised his head, his gaze landing immediately on the squire.
"Oh, lad..."
"Crowe... what's WRONG with me?"
Tear streamed down Bitt's face, and he was frozen with his hands raised above his head. Slowly, he let them hang limp. He could feel the pain in his shoulder now, and it was agony... but that's not why he was crying.
"Don't worry, lad... you'll be alright." Crowe straightened his back and placed a reassuring hand on his squire's shoulder.

Bitt started to sob.
