This lazy agricultural settlement rests on the swampy shores of the Middle Suvan at the delta of The Kenash River. The River's slow moving bayou waters have bred a different sort of people - rugged, cultured, and somewhat violent. Sprawling plantations of tobacco and cotton grow on the outskirts of the swamp in the rich Cyphrus soils, while the city itself curls around the bayou and spawns decadence and sins of all sorts. Life is slower in Kenash, but the lack of pace is made up for in the excesses of food and flesh in a city where drinking, debauchery, gambling, slavery, and overbearing plantation families dominate the landscape.

36th of Fall 514AV

The wonderful thing about Fall in Kenash is not that it gets cooler, no. Few days during the dead of winter give the Kenashians gooseskin, but fall made the sun bearable. Although the man was far used to the humid heat of the swamp, he liked the fall, when the sun beat down, but the wind counteracted, leaving him comfortably warm as he strolled the streets of his home-city.

Matilla had kicked him out of the shop that morning, nor was it in a respectful manor. The Pelican had known him too long, and so she quite literally shoved him out the front doors. He had done nothing but work these past few days, nothing at all. So it was fair enough that he left he shop, socialized a little bit. Although with who, he wouldn't know. When Jed ran over the list of friends who wouldn't mind a surprise visit, he realized he lacked any. Product of not being social. So he was just going to take a walk, maybe visit the library, and tell Matilla a tale about his adventures.

Gods, he was beginning to doubt whether she was his slave or he was hers.

With his hands in his pockets, his blue eyes mulled over the multitude of freeborns that strode through the streets like they owned them. Jed was tempted to let a scowl set across his face, but he remembered the effect of such a mask. Instead he caught the eye of a young lady, not older than twenty. It was obvious her parents wanted her to be part of a class higher than they were. Her carefully applied paints and crudely tailored dress practically yelled the fact. He gave her a nod and she quickly averted his gaze, as if the Radacke wasn't worth her time. Then Jed really scowled. He was worth everyone's time.

It took him a moment to register why, he was in his work clothes. Simple linen pants and a hastily buttoned cotton shirt. He didn't wear bright colors and he was pretty sure he hadn't run a comb through his hair that morning. With the scars and tattoos that peaked out of his collar and blatantly drew themselves across his forearms, it was easy to see why she didn't care for him. He looked like a freeborn.

Jed's scowl deepened.

But then he caught a whiff of something that he hadn't had the pleasure of tasting since he was a child. Chocolate. The Radacke's back straightened immediately, as his eyes wandered to the store front and his feet slowed down. Did he, a grown respectable man, really want to enter into a candy shop, for no reason? Would Jed allow himself to dig into the eatable gold, potentially affecting his tough-guy looks?

Hai yes.

Jed turned into the store, swinging to door open to allow himself through. Immediately his nostrils were assaulted by the sweet smells of various chocolates and sweets in the Draer's shop. Immediately a childish impulse demanded that he buy all of the chocolate, that he buy the whole store and devour the sweets. But he was not a child, so with a straight face, he stopped just inside the door, taking a moment before stepping forward again. With a low voice, he spoke to the Svefra behind the counter. "How much for a few of those cubes there?"

"Depe3nds on which one you'd like. We've got dark chocolate and milk chocolate as well as nuts and fruit filled chocolates. They range from two silvers to two golds." Jed was hoping this would be simpler. Now there were choices he had to choose from. It was harder for the brute because he didn't know the different between dark and milk. Was one sweeter? He didn't want it too sweet. For a man who ate sweets as much as Jed did, his lack of knowledge was almost understandable. Almost. But either way, he would act as if he actually knew what he was doing.

"Uh ... I would like two of your light ones and one of those dark ones. I don't want anything too sweet." Jed brought one hand up to run it through his hair. He kept his face straight, but he knew he was over-thinking this whole process. Chocolate was chocolate. At least Jed though he was over-thinking it until he received the odd look from the blonde behind the counter. Shyke, the light ones were the sweeter ones, weren't they? Jed was never going to do this again. Timothy or Sander would be the ones shopping next time, there was a reason Jed never spent his own money ... he didn't know a damn thing about what he was spending it on. As she wrapped the chocolate in paper and slid it into a bag, Jed tried to loosen up. He pulled the scowl off of his bearded lips so he looked at least somewhat pleased to be buying chocolate.

Sweet Talks (Est)

Estrellir liked to call it accidental socializing, the latest habit she'd developed between investigations and compiling reports. As far as she was concerned, it was a great way to expand one's circle of relationships while one appeared to merely take a small break from work.

After concluding another case, a particularly ridiculous request to look for a freeborn girl's pet rabbit, Estrellir had a mind for the finer things in life. Contrary to tobacco which she always shopped for in person, she trusted Mell to buy sweets. Still, whenever she got the time and felt the air in her bureau was getting stuffy, the Konti left her desk to wander through the neighborhood and visit Draer's Chocolates. The magnificent smell wafting out of open doors drew her like a candle flame the grey little moth. Fortunately chocolate was never deadly and rarely poisonous. With a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth, she entered the shop only to find another customer standing between her and the desired luxury.

That day she was wearing her azure silk dress and white hat rather than practical work ensemble. With her ivory hair tumbling over scaled shoulders in wild locks, she looked every bit the Dynast she was. The man in front of her didn't though, so she tried to elbow and shuffle her way around him. Looking up with a sharp remark at the tip of her tongue, she froze as soon as she gazed into his face.

Estrellir liked to think it was only thanks to her socializing theory that she could act immediately instead of losing precious moments. Raising both hands in apology, she donned a smile that was both surprise and delight in equal parts. "If it isn't my favorite Radacke! What a pleasure to meet you under such pleasant circumstances. How has this season treated you so far?"

She hesitated, unsure which greeting would be in order. Their last meeting had been business, but their conversation had been pleasant nevertheless. In the end the Konti would mirror whatever Jed did, be it hug, handshake or formal bow. When the time seemed right, she ordered three bars of dark chocolate, one of them with nuts.

"If it isn't my favorite Radacke! What a pleasure to meet you under such pleasant circumstances. How has this season treated you so far?" Jed turned just in time to barely miss the Konti sliding past him. It took him just a second before he recognized the Konrath who greeted him, Estrellir. Immediately his left hand, the one that wasn't holding the chocolates, flew to his stomach, smoothing any wrinkles that may be present. He didn't often dress to his class, nor did he often care about that fact. Embarrassment and self-consciousness were nearly foreign concepts to Jed, bur for a fraction of an instant, he wished he had at least changed his shirt before leaving the shop. Too late. His scowl dissipated at the sight of Estrellir's familiar face, replaced with his friendly persona. A flirtatious comment hovered on the tip of his tongue as he took in the Konti's dress. The blue silk hung perfectly along her figure, helping the pale scales that swirled across her skin shine. But instead of allowing the phrase to greet her, he swallowed it. Estrellir was not like the woman he played with. She earned that reputation in both her Dynast status and her practical personality, something that Jed had uncovered during there last meeting. Even under business words she didn't cut corners or fake the matter at hand, and that was something to be respected

"Estrellir." He grinned, opening his arms for a very informal greeting. Although he knew differently, the Radacke had gotten used throwing away all aspects of politeness, especially since he needn't worry about politics or business this time. She hesitated briefly before allowing him to throw one hand around her back lightly, accepting the greeting. "Yes, it's a pleasant surprise." The Radacke stepped to the side to allow her to order her own chocolate. "Oh you know, fixing up the shop since we've got the new gardening law. I don't know why its such a big deal, but it's the Loraks." Jed let the rest of his sentence fall. He didn't care much for the aesthetics of anything but what he created. So what if it diminished his sales? It was his problem, not the Magistrate's. He also found that he was dipping into a political subject. While that was the purpose of their last conversation, the Radacke wished he wouldn't have to fall back into that. Jed renewed his friendly smile, deciding to turn the subject towards Estrellir. He didn't know the Konti well enough to ask her anything in depth, however he knew her business. "Have you gotten any exciting cases of late? Spies or thieves?" Even as the words flew from his lips, Jed knew it wasn't anything original. Anyone would see that socialization was not the woodcarver's area of expertise. Not at all.

Estrellir nodded while she took the bag of chocolates offered to her. Coin tinkled between her and the Draer, changing owners. Dipping a webbed hand into the bag, she moved away from the counter to continue the conversation. "Isn't it obvious where they're coming from? I understand why you think it tedious, but it can't be helped. They seem to believe it'll benefit all of us in the end."

A flicker of a smile wandered across her features as he asked the question. So that was Jed Radacke's attempt at polite conversation... If Estrellir cared more about others, she would've felt sorry for him. At the same time, she was polite enough to ignore his obvious weakness. Instead she rolled her eyes in mock exasperation. "I'm beginning to forget what exciting cases are. The last client wanted me to find a pet rabbit. I did, of course, but it wasn't what you'd consider fun." Of course, she knew work wasn't supposed to be fun, but that case had barely been profitable. Compared to political intricacies Dynasts tended to present her with, it was nothing but ridiculous!

Her hand emerged from the bag with the first bar of dark chocolate. With a thoughtful hum, she took a first bite. The bittersweet flavor immediately exploded in her mouth and caressed her tongue. Nothing less could be expected of the Draer... While she sucked at her piece and allowed the bar to stain her fingers brown, she exited the shop and turned around. "Will you walk with me for a while? Sweets seem to grow better when enjoyed in good company."

The stuffy air hadn't quite left her head yet... At the same time, it couldn't hurt to deepen relationships with a member of a different Dynasty when she got the chance. Lastly, his remark about the Lorak's rule had given her an idea. Approaching it with care would guarantee its success.

Sweet Talks (Est)

Postby Jed Radacke on October 30th, 2014, 9:51 pm

"That certainty isn't an offer I would refuse." Jed flashed the Konti a smile, squinting at the sudden bright sun. He blinked a few times for his eyes to adjust, and then turned to match his stride with her own. She hadn't asked about his business venture, and Jed didn't want to give up the chance to let it be known he is doing well. Whenever Jed looked at his sales, he realized the effect that the other furniture shop was having on his business. Estrellir seemed to be a social enough woman that it wouldn't be a horrible idea to give her the idea of his good business. "I can hardly say that I've gotten a business venture as exciting as that one." A hint of a playful smirk rested on his words when he referred to her last case. "the furniture business is only so eventful. However, I recently bought some hardwoods from Kalea for a new style of carving I've been curious about. Business is going steady."

The Radacke spoke with an off-hand attitude, breaking off a chunk of the lighter chocolate as he walked with Estrellir. It was only "making conversation", but the man had tried to put enough information in it that she would perceive his business as doing well without him boring her. Most people didn't take interest in the dark woods of Kalea verses the spongy light wood of the swamp, he was well aware of that. But at the end of his small advertisement, Jed's blue eyes slid over to Estrellir as he popped the chocolate in his mouth, judging her interest in his little talk. He doubted it was high, but he had hoped he gave her the right idea. The explosion of the unique sweet and milky flavor filled his taste buds, and Jed looked back ahead, not wanting to make eye contact as he was eating.

"Wow, this is rather sweet." Jed chuckled, placing the light chocolate back into the paper, fishing around for the darker one. The brute ran his tongue over his teeth, feeling the chocolate spreading throughout his mouth. It was sweet, but messy, especially in such hot weather that Kenash was used to. He had realized he didn't ask her a word in return, which was bad etiquette. "I feel like a child, but this treat would go perfect with a glass of milk. Wouldn't it?" Jed flashed a smile before bringing his index finger and thumb up to his mouth to neatly lick the melted chocolate off the tips.

Estrellir returned the smile and allowed him to walk beside her at a leasurely pace. It was a rare treat for her to walk around town like that, neither following a suspect nor rushing back and forth between library and interviewing witnesses. Usually she chose more immediate and practical means to relax, things she could grab in a heartbeat and put away as easily. A bottle of exquisite rum, some Rajor tobacco... or Draer chocolates. She put another in her mouth and shoved it around with her tongue, spreading the bittersweet taste.

Relaxing in the company of another Dynast and enjoying the mild weather wasn't something she did often. Still, her mother and dutiful elder sister had made certain the Konti knew how to conduct herself in any kind of social or political gathering. And after all, she'd watched countless men being presented to some of her younger sisters and them being paraded before various handsome Dynasts in turn. If anything, she knew how to keep a conversation interesting.

That also included asking about things other ladies would plainly ignore or wave aside with a polite smile. "That's good to hear. We can't all go around chasing rumors and murderers, after all, otherwise Kenash would lie in ruins before the Watchstone changed colors again." A light laugh followed her remark. Not to mention, everyone doing her work would make it exceedingly difficult for her little bureau to thrive.

"How is Kalean hardwood different from our wood though?" She licked her lips, thinking of the Konrath's prosperous bamboo forests, another kind of material altogether. And as full-blooded Konrath, Estrellir was more interested in the furniture business than other Dynasties would expect.

Violet eyes flashed as she watched him work on the light chocolate and put it back into the bag. Estrellir had ordered the darkest kind for a reason... and it amused her in an absentminded way that Jed seemed to share her preferences. The comment about milk even tickled a little giggling from her. "Milk has its place on the dining table... just like rum or chocolate. I completely agree, by the way." In the meantime they were nearing Fountain Plaza and Estrellir went ahead with a few dancing steps before spreading out an arm in invitation. "And why by Avalis not have that glass of milk?" If he was willing, she'd lead him towards the bar at the side of the plaza. As she did business in the town proper frequently, Estrellir knew her way around, but she'd never actually taken the time to enjoy the attractions Fountain Plaza offered.
