Clyde listened intently as Elann explained about her people and culture. He wasn't sure why he had such an interest in the girl. She wasn't a mage, she wasn't of the knighthood, and so getting to know her didn't serve a specific purpose.
And yet... He found himself interested in finding out about her. This in and of itself was odd for Clyde. Perhaps he just wasn't aware of the reason, but that he did have one, he reasoned to himself.
Clyde noted the name of the city, how it had crops, and that her people were more nomadic it seemed. Goat herders, a rather simple upbringing. But then had Clyde's been any less simple, growing up the son of a metalsmith in Syliras?
He was however confused when she still refused to order something even when he offered to pay. Apparently lacking the funds wasn't the only reason she didn't want to get something, and he was at a loss to what it might be.
“Please something small, a side if you'd like, and we could share it. It would put me at ease.”
Clyde paused for a moment, took in a deep breath and held it for a moment, tapping Cha twice against the table, before slowly letting it out and beginning to talk once more.
“In general its not rude I suppose, to not eat while others do. But well... Do you recall my mentioning of Sahova, a place I had visited? It is another island, off the same coast as Mura is, but far different. The race that dominantly lives there is called the nuit. Have you heard of them?”
Here Clyde paused for a moment, giving Elann a chance to answer before continuing on. He'd decided to attempt another tactic of getting her to eat, all of which was true in its own way.
“The nuit are a race of sorts, but at the same time not. They are undead. They were once other things, other races, other beings, but become immortal of a sort through powerful magic. However they take up residence in deceased bodies, and wear them until they fade and waste, and then move to a new body. In such a fashion they can live more or less forever, but live while not truly alive.”
“I spent time living amongst them, and one of the things that unnerved me the most was that they didn't eat. They weren't human any more, weren't alive, so they had no reason to eat, just fresh forms to use. It always unnerved me that they didn't understand eating, didn't break bread or share a meal as we humans do. I suppose there were other things odd about them, they didn't sleep, and they weren't alive, but it was always the lack of eating that bothered me.”
“So it would ease me greatly, if as a favor to me, we could eat together and share food, and converse as two normal living things do. Even if just something small, which we could share. Or we could share some of my other food too once it arrives, if something in particular catches your eye. It is as you said a lot of food.”
As Clyde finished speaking the waiter returned, setting a glass of juice before him and asking if he was ready to order.
“Yes, I'll take the dinner, with an extra side plate.”
With that the waiter turned to Elann, waiting for her to speak.
