Cards Gone Wrong

A cloud lifted from Syna, casting brightness on the cards that lay before her. The light streamed down, but illusions seemed to shift and then there was a tree above her, casting shade on the cards once more. There were three, and she shuffled them around slowly, trying to mimic the actions once taught to her. But she was slower than she expected, and it was hard to confuse the audience. The one who was playing with her seemed to watch the Empress carefully, tracking the movements even when Nephti herself wasn’t certain where the card had been placed.

Today hadn’t gone too well. She had decided to try the three card trick - but as a challenge for onlookers, not a trick, with no money involved except for the few coins dropped by those impressed. Unfortunately, it was much harder than the other trick, requiring much more skill in her manipulation of the cards. She could shuffle, she could spread the cards and run them through her fingers easily, but not this sly little trickery. And it was annoying her, a lot. She determined to master it, even if it meant struggle in front of people. That was the best way to practice, after all. That was what she tried to remind herself of, anyway.

She picked the Empress and whatever the other card was (she had confused herself too much, and she wasn’t even entirely certain whether she was holding the Empress at all) and tried the little trick Mr Illusion had taught her, flicking the top card down first. It caught on her finger, flipping over and landing face up, staring at the woman before her. The Empress looked at her with her commanding face, and the woman with disgust.

“Surely it works better if you don’t show me where the card is,” she sighed, bored, and rose, joined by a small group, halving the gathering that had been watching, “That took too long.” And with that, she left, people scattering in all directions. The rest looked at Nephti with apologetic eyes, but all had things to do other than watch a girl failing with her card tricks. She understood them, but watched them go with hopeful eyes anyway, waiting for one to stay, or offer a few coins, or ask for a go of their own.

Of course, no one did stay, and she was left alone, bobbing in the crowd that flowed around her. In that moment, she lost the wonder and magic behind the illusions she conjured, and became part of the background, a floating figure. A river rolled around, Nephti becoming a rock that stood firmly between it, then slowly shifted with the current. She let the cards fall into a rough pile in one of hands, before being stuffed deep in a pocket, Nephti giving up and walking instead, walking slowly around.

Finally, she came to a stop, deciding that this was useless. She was never going to learn if she didn’t try. Where had that determination gone from seconds ago? It couldn’t have all drained from her. Turning into a small courtyard, where a group of children played hopscotch or some other such game and gaggle of women hung washing from a line, Nephti determined that she would try once more, and succeed this time. Or practice some more, anyway.

Cards Gone Wrong

Trying to give up fear of judgement, she smiled at the groups, bringing her cards back. “Want to play a game?” she asked, directing her questions at the younger ones, who judged less and appreciated more. They looked up at their mothers, who nodded with a roll of their eyes, wondering why the kids would want permission to do this and not the more dangerous things they got up to.

They settled in around her, a little crowd of large eyes and expectant faces looking up to her. Smiling at their innocence and bright souls, she knelt in front of them and, smoothing out her dress slightly, flicked out the three cards again and holding the Empress up high. “Who can find the Empress?” she challenged, letting them absorb the image on the card. Then she placed the cards down, spinning them round. Her hands moved quickly and the little ones’ eyes struggled to keep up, even without any tricks. A good start.

She stopped without trying one, wondering which, if any, was the most observant, the one to look out for the next time she tried. “Who?” she asked again, and a slightly older, yet shyer, member of the group slowly moved forward, pointing carefully at one of the cards.

The Eypharian flipped it. It was the Empress. Nephti smiled, nodding and enjoying the amusement she saw from the little girl. It was annoying that she hadn’t managed to trick them, but she hadn’t tried to hard. Next time, she would. Next time, she’ll make them really have to think.

Starting again, she shuffled cards quicker, looking up occasionally at the observant little girl, whose face was scrunched up with concentration. Her eyes were watching the right card, no matter how hard the Eypharian tried. Nephti dared trying the trick, picking up two cards, and adjusting her fingers. She tried flicking it, but the cards caught, landing badly. The kids giggled, and so did Nephti, not caring in front of them. Their laughter was of amusement, not of mocking, and it was easy to join in. She tried again, watching the wrong card flick down first. Oh well. She continued, daring to try the hand flick again a few times. They didn’t go much better, but she managed to drop the top card first at one point, without it being too obvious.

“What about now?”

The same girl from before frowned, before pointing carefully at a card. The right card. Either this girl was amazing at guessing, or Nephti was bad at this.

It wasn’t hard for her to decided that it was the second. Time to bring out the card fold trick.

She tried one more time, moving cards quicker, attempting to drop the top card first a few times first. Holding the cards carefully, she made her movements quick, which didn’t help her accuracy. Her fingers always caught, or the card flipped weirdly.

Oh well. Once she had decided it was time, she picked up a card, the one she believed to be the Empress, and subtly folded a corner as she dropped it, stubbing it as she placed it. Pretending to not notice, she continued flipping cards around. It was hard not to smile as some of the kids giggled at her mistake, almost stopping their observation since they believed they would always know.

Good. Nephti wanted them to think that. Smiling at them as if she hadn’t noticed anything wrong, she pick up two cards, passing them from one hand to another. As she did so, she flattened one corner while she folded the other, throwing them down.

She shuffled them a little bit more. Then she challenged them to spot the card again. They pointed at the creased one. She flipped it over. It wasn’t the Empress. Moving her hand over to the real Empress, she turned it, smiling at the children with a look of triumph in her eyes. “She is here.”

“No she isn’t,” one of the kids called out, Nephti looking down, surprised. Sure enough, it wasn’t the Empress staring out, but the Emperor. She couldn’t even remember that card being one of the other two she placed. The kids started giggling, until Nephti flipped the third one, not finding the Empress there either. By then, some were a bit fed up, instead of amused.

“It’s no fun if you cheat!” one called out, while another piped up after him, “You can’t hide the card!” Nephti shook her head, turning the cards over quickly, completely confused as to what had happened. As the group moved away from her, the girl looked at her cards desperately, taking out the pack and rifling through it until the Empress fell out.
She had no clue how that had happened. Closing her eyes, she spun it in her fingers, waiting for something to happen. Nothing. It was Ionu’s doing, she knew it. He was determined to make her day miserable, today, although she wasn’t certain why. It was Ionu and his illusions changing what the cards read, although she wasn’t certain whether it was now, or they had just changed back.

Looking up, she looked at the annoyed faces who watched her, the group that had moved away when they thought she was cheating them. There another audience had gone. The cards fell flat on her fingers, refusing to shuffle, refusing to do what she wanted them to do. Perhaps it was the trick. Maybe she would have better luck if she went with the other one, much easier, the one she was much more confident at.

“I have another trick!” she called out, the kids looking over curiously. “I won’t cheat this time, I promise,” she added, hoping it would coax the rest to come back. They did, settling in around her, although some looked a lot more bored than others. ”Thank you,” she smiled softly, bringing the cards in front, although she used a different pack this time. Maybe this one wasn’t under the influence of illusions.

Cards Gone Wrong

Spreading the cards in one swift movement, she gestured for the children to choose one, waiting for them to pass the card around and absorb the delicate drawings on it. As they did, she tilted the deck, turning it in her hand as she kept the bottom card in her memory. The card was placed on top, Nepthi cutting the deck and placing her card on that card.

“Cut it more!” a kid cried out, still wary of her cheating. That was the idea of the trick, but she did what the child said, cutting and cutting until they were satisfied.

“Now, I will find your card.” She pulled each card out, one at a time, flipping it through her fingers and placing it to the side, watching cups and swords and coins and wands fall past, occasionally matched with the deeply illustrated major deck, with women or men staring out with detailed faces and scenery.

Then she stumbled across the card she remembered, placing it to the side without thinking. It was the next card that interested her. She lifted it up, showing it to the rest, who frowned, and snorted with laughter. “Is this your card?” she asked, already knowing what the answer would be.

“No!” the kids laughed, Nephti frowning herself. What had she done wrong? Perhaps it was the other card, the one before the card she remembered. She picked that one up too, showing it to the group. They laughed again, enjoying how badly she had messed this up. “Are you going to try every card?” one giggled, Nephti growing red with embarrassment. Those illusions - they were to blame. Messing her cards up, changing their faces.

Sometimes, they were so mischievous, so irritating…

This time, the children left for good, returning to their games and ignoring the failed card tricks. Their minds flickered onto different things and Nephti was left staring at them, alone, and wishing her cards would behave for her.

Cards Gone Wrong

The woman, who had finished pulling sheets and shirts over the washing line, moved over to her, feeling sympathy to the girl who simply wanted to entertain the children. “Why don’t you show us?” they asked, and Nephti nodded, pulling her cards out again. Taking everything slowly, and focusing deeply on the cards, she shuffled them, letting the cards ripple through her hands. Then she passed the deck to the women, who shuffled it and chose a card, passing it between themselves.

Nephti took the deck back, cutting it and tilting it in just the right way to see the card at the bottom, committing it to memory. The Moon, how fitting. It had all the illusions and insecurity that was affected her life there and then. Pushing away her negative thoughts, she placed the Moon card gently on the top of the deck, after the card they had chosen had been added.

Slowly, she cut once. Then she cut again, keeping her fingers clear from the place where the Moon card was. She hesitated, before cutting the deck a third and final time, hopefully shifting the Moon card and their card up near the top, so her mission would be easier. That was, if Ionu didn’t find it funny to mess it all up again.

Taking a deep breath, the Eypharian girl started pulling cards from the top and flipping them over, placing them simply on the ground beside her. No fancy tricks this time. No displays of cards, no wild movements and arrangements. Simple, so things wouldn’t mess up.

The cards came, one by one, until the Moon was there. Then the five of cups. She didn’t even stop to think about its meaning, instead holding it up so she could no longer see it. “Is this your card?” she asked, softly, her voice trembling a bit with anticipation.

“Yes!” one of the woman grinned, and Nephti couldn’t believe her luck. The smiling faces, clearly impressed, reassured her that they weren’t just trying to make her feel better. Finally, it had worked! Nephti, bubbling with excitement again, couldn’t help laughing, letting her relief shine through.

“Thank you for watching,” she nodded at the women, rising, “Thank you.” Of course, she wasn’t going to test her luck. She had done it once - she could do it, that was all she needed to know.

“Thank you for that little trick. How do you do that? It is amazing!” Nephti blushed at the words of one of the women, shaking her head.

“It is a… I don’t know how you say it…”

“Secret?”

“Yes, that. A secret.” She laughed again, repeating the word in her mind a few times. “It is a secret.”

One of the woman had a glint in her eye, and held her head up with pride. With a sly little grin, she began talking, spitting words out quickly. “I’ve seen the trick before. She looks at the card at the bottom of the deck, you see, and remembers it. Then when she cuts it, she places that card on top. So when she cuts it again, she simply leaves the two cards together - then she knows the card after the one she remembered is our card. Sly little trick, really, quite simple, but good if performed right.”

Nephti inhaled sharply, watching as the faces of the women shifted to be less mystified. Then she shot the woman who revealed the secret a dirty look. Did she actually just reveal the trick? She had ruined everything. The idea of card tricks was the mystery behind them, the curious feeling you got when you tried to figure out just how the magic was done.

This woman had ruined it without a second thought.

Taking another deep breath, Nephti stopped herself from snapping back. It had been a long day from her.

Cards weren’t working. She needed to take a break.

Comments: I really enjoyed this thread, Nephti. It was a good thread to play to your skill levels, and very fitting to Alvadas. I liked especially seeing some frustration. Most threads I've seen of yours paint Nephti as a calm, hopeful girl. Not a bad thing at all. But it's refreshing to see her on a bad day, even so. Good work. :)

Enjoy your grade! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to send me a PM.
