Males playing Female's and vice versa

Uh... just a question to put out there really... I see a lot of male character's being played by female's. Are there any males here playing female character's? The Konti look pretty fascinating... and at some point I might make one - but would that weird people out lol?

Males playing Female's and vice versa

It would not, go ahead and do it.

I could probably name a few men who RP female's, but they might as well present themselves. It would be a really weird and stupid bias if it was weird for men to play women, but not for women to play men.

Yeah not at all. I have thought about making a female PC but just feel like I can't relate well. But that is just me. I would say it's no different than playing a female in a video game. Just as long as you don't tell people you really ARE a female...then it would most definitely be creepy.

I know you are looking more for some insight from males but coming from a female who writes for all male characters, there really is not shame in it. If it is what you want to do, go for it! Konti are a really cool race and if I was better at writing female characters I'd totally go for playing one.

I know plenty of great male writers who write for female characters. Siiri for one. I mean look at him. His characters are all female and FANTASTIC. Mutt, my AS, plays all female characters (even a Konti!) and he does great at it.

Bottom line, if you want to go for it, go for it. If you can get into the mindset of a Konti then I'm sure you'll do wonderful at writing for one.

Yeah, it's definitely not a big deal. Think about it, if you ever wrote a novel or what have you, you'd be writing for all the characters, some of which may be female (if you're a guy) or male (if you're a gal). Like people have said, if it's what you want to do, then have fun and go for it.

Personally, I’ve always found it amusing that people tend to find it “weird” or “difficult to relate” to playing a character of the opposite gender of them. At least, it’s funny when this seems to be an issue but playing a character of a mythical race, in a profession they themselves do not hold, wielding magical powers, etc, is not.

I suppose everything is relative. I’m a girl and I play both male and female characters. Anyone who may think you’re weird for doing so is probably weird themselves. ;)

Good point haha, maybe I'm just scared because there are people who can tell me I'm wrong :D (I don't think there are a whole lot of armorsmiths crawling around the forums)

Postby K'Sabe on November 14th, 2011, 5:29 pm

I have never thought if it that way Caelum, but it's so true:)

I don't think it's weird, though I personally is a bit apprehensive of creating a male PC because i'm uncertain if I can portrait him and because I already have 4 PC's. But as Auldwin said if you're writing a novel/book you have to write for both sexes. So then it would be a good thing trying both male and female PC's on Mizahar where you could easily know by fellow members how you do:) Then again is there really any right or wrong when writing as the opposite sex when everyone is different and unique?

Males playing Female's and vice versa

Postby Caelum on November 14th, 2011, 5:46 pm

Gender, gender roles and gender identity are hot topics in the real world. Whether or not you’re a six armed Eypharian or a skin shifting kelvic are not. That’s why, obviously; but I still find it amusing.

Frankly, K’Sabe, I think it will always come down to personal opinion much the same way gender/roles/identity does in real life. What players should actually be concerned about is whether or not they are effectively communicating the depth and facets of their character that cause them to be unique while at once not failing to adhere to the various racial desciptions in Mizahar lore.
