Ok, pets, this has been an issue of mine, and I've not always handled it properly in grading situation but for those of you who have magical characters I need you to go read Jen's post
here on magic.
Magic is personal (specially
personal magic) and intimate. You are using your life force, you are moving your soul when you use magic. When you write about magic keep a checklist. Everything you do should explain the technical process to the audience, including the structure the magic takes and the goal in mind, also including any flaws your character makes. Try to understand what the creator of the magics had in mind during this step. Then, once that is down comes what it physically feels like. Energy is leaving you, be it through your eyes, or or your limbs, or simply your mind it leaves alters changes and flows. This may hurt, it may cause ecstasy, it may itch slightly. Whatever it is tell us, tell us how it effect their entire body. Last on the list is emotions, this has really very little to do with whoever invented the magic, or the physics of the world. This is your place to be creative, this is the seed of why your character loves or hates to do magic, make it profound and make it intimate. Intimate! Tell us how it feels when magic is used, different types, for different purposes, make each training lesson a character development thread, make each spell change your character.
Think on this, read Jen's post, and go challenge yourself to make magic what it should be. If you are playing a mage this is an amazing opportunity to dig deep into your character, farther than most people can ever go. Embrace that.
I've a few people I'm specifically watching for this change. You know who you are, buck up. I look forward to seeing how you handle this.
