Where Do PC Names Come From?

Postby Danderion Snowsong on August 23rd, 2013, 11:40 am

Honestly, I always use a system which I devised when I started playing D&D a few years back xD

There are three rules to it:
All syllables but the last must end on a vowel, which may do so.
All syllables but the first must start with a consonant, which may do so.

After that, you smash syllables in a 6-row table, some can be double syllables if you like, and then you roll a die and take syllables.

Thus came Da-nde-rion("Nde" inspired by the languages the African tribes use). Sounded awesome in my head, realized here that it sounded like dandelion...Oh well...

I think my characters name is pretty self explanatory, Shire-ss :D In fact, you can find subtle Lord of the Rings references hidden somewhere in almost all my threads! The best reference is Shiress' heirloom!

Where Do PC Names Come From?

Postby Roland Eir on August 25th, 2013, 4:22 am

Roland is the first name of one of the incredible English teachers at my highschool. Originally it sounded like the name of a noble squire or knight to me, but Roland's character turned out quite differently.

"Eir" just sounded cool to me! Come to think of it, it's also a homophone of ire. At this point Roland is not a very angry person so that doesn't really work either. Shrug.

Funny thing, my character's last name also comes from (World of) Warcraft. The Agamands are a bunch low level undead evil mindless mooks near the Forsaken starting area. Considering how much I like low level undead evil mindless mooks, I couldn't resist using it. The fact that they were once land owners helped the theme too.

Marina is Italian for navy (for the blue hair and ribbon).

Where Do PC Names Come From?

Postby Ball on August 27th, 2013, 1:23 pm

Funny actually here's what I did:

Ball's name came to me cause well, I needed a one word name for a character that was made of clay that was moldable... I thought of playdough and cookie dough, both of which one can roll in to a ball and then form it as they pleased... Ironically I found out after I named him thusly that pycons are born spherical.

Aose's name I found through a random name generator

Ly'an Godhammer... Well according to the Isur Lore female names can end in an, so I found letters that when placed before an rocked out in awesomeness, thus Ly'an... Godhammer is cause she's a vizerian...

Isabelle is my daughter's name...

Spoons, well he likes spoons. =D

Graders Please Note :
As Ball is getting closer and closer to maxing out Pyken as a skill, I would like to request that in places where Ball is not doing enough to constitute Pyken XP if Pyken technique lores could be issued instead.

Examples of proper XP level for Pyken would be: Ball developing or refining his technique by adding new thing against an actual moving target, not a dummy.

The use of basic skills alone are not enough to accomplish XP at Ball's current level of Pyken.

Thank you.

I will be handling all Ball related posts on Mondays @ 1800 my time *

Where Do PC Names Come From?

Postby Dovinya on August 27th, 2013, 2:09 pm

My first character on this site, I determined his name by the latin translation of Death Dealer. For all of my other characters to follow, my approach has been rather nonsensical, mashing letters together till they fit that race's lore.

Where Do PC Names Come From?

Postby Clerk on August 28th, 2013, 4:16 am

It's actually a fantasy name I've used a lot in the last year or so, starting with one of my Pokemon in White 2. Clerk is also the system I gave to the laptop I recently bought. Really, I thought it was just fun sounding, but with my PC I gave it a purpose by emphasizing his fascination with the exchange of goods. Since it's so simple it also seemed like a good Pycon name.

My usual approach to naming charatcers is to find something either Gaelic or Celtic, preferably with the monst nosensical pronunciation I can find, and then giving it to my character.

I this case, Eadon is an old Celtic version of the name Owen. Never would have guessed that one, huh? It also had the usefully generic meaning of 'warrior'.
