Where Do PC Names Come From?

Postby Shiyami on July 29th, 2013, 11:05 pm

As the title suggest where did you come up with the name for your PC, and/or the self given title(s)? I guess I'll start.

Shiyami Toten, the Ake Aug.

Shi means death in romanji
Yami means darkness, also in romanji.
Toten is german, for death/dead.

Now, the title is also made the same way.

Ake means scarlet, or red, in romanji,
Aug means eye, in German.

What I find funny, is that when you have the word 'shiyami', it can also be translated as 'salt'. Huuuur duuuuuur

Anyways how about you guys? how did you guys come up with your characters names?

Where Do PC Names Come From?

Postby Tebrist on July 29th, 2013, 11:29 pm

Well, I came up with Tebrist after jumbling around the word 'ballerina'. It was an interesting transition over the span of several days. I like the result - Tebrist sounds almost bladed to me. It's the 't' at the end, I think. I make a lot of my names that way. The original word tends to have nothing at all to do with the name, though. Sometimes the character is the exact opposite - that's what happened with Teb. She's an obese (purely lack of exercise) Akvatari that can't even fly due to her weight. She's hideous and unappealing. From 'ballerina'. Try it some time.
A cocoon hangs over a secret water's edge in her head
The water reflects tells a story without one of its own
Some stories joyful, some wretched, some stories sharp, some soft
Flowing together, the ripples stripping them of smoke and mirrors.

Inside the cocoon, a slug grows, hungry for the stories beneath
A lazy moth is taking shape, draped in ghostly hues
Her wings unfurl.
Tebrist

Where Do PC Names Come From?

Oh, ah...Actually, Yas is Arabic as a matter of fact. I've used the name before in a different context, but its actually Persian in nature in the masculine form of it.

Its short for the name "Yaser". (Yaw-s-air)

Where Do PC Names Come From?

Postby Wanda Endust on July 30th, 2013, 3:26 am

I was watching thinking about watching old reruns of Wishbone, and realized that even though Wanda was the mean neighbor, it was actually a pretty name!

And then I just so happened to have a container of Endust cleaning wipes sitting on my desk.

Where Do PC Names Come From?

Postby Wart on July 30th, 2013, 4:16 am

My PC's name was actually started as more of a joke. I was still developing her character and couldn't think of a first letter, so while driving I looked out at random signs downtown and caught a 'W'. For some reason the first W word that came to my head was Wart.

I laughed about it, and just kind of joked in my head about actually having a character named something as ridiculous as Wart. Eventually though it just sort of stuck in my brain, the whole character idea grew around it, and I wasn't really able to get it out of my head or replace it with something else that fit as well.

Her "actual" name, Warthenia, basically came from me trying to make up a terribly proper sounding longer version of Wart.

Where Do PC Names Come From?

Postby Hadyn Skellig on July 30th, 2013, 4:32 am

Wanda, the Endust bit made me chuckle. Your next character ought to be CharacterName Wyndex

Anywho... it takes me FOREVER to come up with a name for my character. I slave away with that before I can get anything else done, even if I have a concept in mind. I wanted a less feminine name that sounded strong (being that she's from a family of smiths). I played around with some Nordic names, none of them called to me, so I threw some letters together.

Hadyn

--(though it is not said HAY-den. It's HAD-inn. No body likes it when their name is mispronounced)

Instantly loved it. Her last name has many meanings, though the one I prefer is highlighted in this excerpt from Stanley Dudek's thesis: "Skellig may be an Old Norse word for courage or hope. It could be a term that symbolizes renewal or resuscitation after grave disappointment."

Probably more long winded than you wished. But there y'are

Where Do PC Names Come From?

Postby Fubuki Kouri on July 30th, 2013, 5:09 pm

Fubuki means "Blizzard" in Japanese.

Kouri means "Ice", also in Japanese.

Blizzard Ice, now more true than ever with her deadly touch and she was a Vantha who lives in Avanthal, Taldera. The northernmost city in Mizahar, famous for its Auroras, Queen Morwen, Eye-color-shifting people, and of course, Blizzards. :)

Where Do PC Names Come From?

Postby Vergil on July 30th, 2013, 6:37 pm

The name "Virgil" first popped into my head, but I'll bet it's because of Mass Effect 1. One of my favourite tracks from the game. :)

Sadly "Virgil" was already taken and knowing how much I hate finding names, I stuck with it and used a different spelling, hence "Vergil".

His last name, "Sorrel", was from looking through a wiki list of plant names (as Symenestra last names are based on plants). I basically skimmed until I found one that I liked the look of, tried the sound and look of the name together with "Vergil". If it passes all of that, I checked to see if the plant was an angiosperm (flowering plant) as I wanted to decorate his CS or have a sort of family crest using the flower.
