Seyp moved through the soaked ground with that same look of indifference on his face. He found his pace increasing as they approached the basin, hearing the flooding waters rush over the grounds. The path he had given led them over dangerous terrain, this was true, but it lead to the nearest troupe which would encounter the least predators in the long run of things. The Kisthkin, while animal primates in their world, were still more intelligent than most of the other creatures in the jungle. The troupe knew that they could avoid most of the predators in the jungle in that area, save for serpents and others who had no troubles with the waters. Once the rains would stop, the troupe would move once again, finding a more appropriate place for safety.

Seyp’s eyes soon moved to Satu as she began to speak, to question why he stared at her. Her words were mixed with curiosity and laced with counseling riddles. His hand was dragged across his face, wiping away an excess layer of water. “Your council is wasted on me.” Seyp simply said. “Focus more on your footing, seer.”

As the party caught up with Siiri and Hania, Seyp gave a slow look around the area, one hand dropping to his chain, the other to his throwing daggers. His gaze then traveled to Siiri, nodding towards the turn in direction to be taken. “The troupe was spotted about two miles away.” Seyp said, his gaze falling to the rushing water for a moment. “As a suggestion, we should likely make our camp about a quarter mile away from their nesting ground.”

Hunting by Numbers(Hunting Party)

Postby Siiri on September 8th, 2010, 2:28 pm

The rest of the group arrived in no time, their passage through the jungle unimpeded due to the path forged ahead by advance party. There was slight banter upon their arrival, more so than Siiri, the self-appointed leader of the group, expected from a band out in the wilds but she knew what she was getting into when she joined the ragtag group. Despite having no unit cohesion - as yet anyway - the Snapping Jaws warrioress knew that everyone would quickly learn to function as one if they hoped to achieve what they came out to do, else this expedition would be one destined for disaster.

While the chatter irked her, there seemed to be no issues yet regarding from the other Myrians regarding the composition of the party. This was a good thing, at least; Siiri half expected Koa to be at the throat of one of the deyhans before they were a mile out. Still, the Konti's last words made her raise an eyebrow in alarm, thinking that the flighty outsider might run off from the group. Mentally, through their bond, Siiri bade Miharu to keep an eye on the wispy figure of the suvai fighter. The Konti may have earned her respect in the fighting arts but she was still to easily distracted for the Myrian's peace of mind.

A nod to Seyp brought the maledictor by her side, the man explaining the last report regarding the group they were after. Siiri listened carefully, trying to deduce their next move from the information provided her. It was meager, but knowledge she had over her surroundings from living so long in the region provided enough leads for her to at least point them in the right direction.

“We're close then,” she noted, her eyes gazing up to the sky. The rain hasn't let up yet, and she doubted it would, leaving the heavens an overcast gray. Despite not having Syna's fiery orb to mark the passage of time, Siiri knew they still had at least half a day to find the Kisthkin troupe before it got too dark, and dangerous, to do anything.

“By my guess, the troupe won't be foraging in too large an area in this weather – too hazardous, they might lose their young or elderly to predators.” She paused, thinking and relying on her hunter's instincts to second guess the behavior of the Kisthkin alpha in such a setting. Knowing the weather patterns of Falyndar, where would the creature lead his troupe during the summer? Surely somewhere easily defensible with easy access to food and water. Water was easy, all a beast had to do was stoop down and drink from the puddles in the ground or find a cup-shaped leaf to quench its thirst. Food however...

“The fruit groves,” Siiri intoned. “They would be near the fruit groves.”

The Myrians kept several near the city though such places did naturally occur on their own farther out. While those closer the city were seldom approached by foraging animals because of the frequent patrols, the distant ones were fair game. That the Kisthkin group was detected so near the city meant they've passed through the outer groves and were working their way to the Myrian-owned ones before they went back into the deep wilds. Siiri oriented herself to where she judged the nearest fruit grove to be before barking out new orders.

“Seyp will join me at the front, we'll travel about half a mile before we start looking for a campsite a little ways out. Koa and Pua still take rear guard. You, Hania, with the Konti.” Unspoken was her command to Miharu to trail the latter two, making sure to keep Satu with the group. “Twenty paces gap. Keep your guard up and your eyes and ears alert. Move it!”
Apologies to everyone I'm threading with, but it's like the Danaides for me right now.

Hunting by Numbers(Hunting Party)

As the group reassembled, Miharu shifted back to her human form - leaving her a naked vision of honey-and-cream, which she didn't even seem to notice. Blond hair plastered itself to her chest and face, but her eyes just flickered around to the group as they gathered.

"Deyhan!" she hissed at Satu, golden eyes narrowing. "Have you never been hunting before? Keep your voice down and your mind on the task at hand. This is no pleasure jaunt," she growled quietly, dismissing her from her attention just as suddenly and focusing on her bondmate.

As soon as Siiri mentioned the fruit groves, Miharu twitched and turned to scan the waters around them. "We must go, now," she murmured, head dipping and bobbing just as it would have in her wolf form, nostrils flaring as her gaze darted around. "We've been scented. Another minute, and they will follow even after we move." Something transmitted across the bond then, some complex flash of something, comprehensible only to an animal mind, but there was no doubt of the importance of getting the hell out of there right now.

As the final instructions were given, Miharu changed in another dull flash of golden light and landed on four feet instead of two, a sopping wet wolf in the middle of a jungle. How miserable must she be? She didn't seem to care, though, taking the rear-most position and urging the rest of the group on with a snap of her powerful jaws.

Hunting by Numbers(Hunting Party)

Postby Satu on September 26th, 2010, 3:46 am

Disappointed, the Konti scowled, appraising her companions under lowered lids. What did they know of Water? They were land dwellers, only living in half the world. They did not understand the pull of the tides in her veins, and the desire her body felt to be submerged. If they only knew the slide of the waves against the skin and the weightlessness of its caress! But they scoffed at her in their ignorance, forgetting she was a creature of that world too. Even the dark skinned Pua tried to inform her of its dangers, but what could terrorize these waters that could be worse than the creatures of the open sea?

Satu held her tongue, to bide her time. The Myrians were ever vigilant. Almost… Anxious? They were not Scared, but something filled their Hearts… The HeartSeer did not have a word for the emotions emanating from them. Longingly she looked to the waters, there was a sense of urgency in their words, and she knew, there would be no swimming this day. Her gaze traveled back to the jungle wilds. There was nothing in her mind to focus on, no sounds and no movement anywhere. What did they see? What would cause them to be so full of hurry?

All the feelings worked together to put the Konti on edge, all except Seyp. He seemed to try to contain his Heart feelings; perhaps he even tried to cover them. Her eyes narrowed, did the Maledictor discount them? She vowed to watch him for this perceived trespass against the mother Avalis.

Satu turned then as Miharu chastised her. The Konti looked at the Wolf-Girl with a puzzled look. “No, I have never hunted before…” she answered. “I have never had the need.” As one who ate no meat, it seemed an excessively barbaric, strange thing to do. She watched the path before them, and shook her head. She was equally unaware of what a hunt entailed as she was of what was required of a hunting party’s participants. “We are walking, travelling. Is this not the task at hand?” she questioned Miharu as the wolf-girl looked away. “Pleasure can be found in many ways… Such as in a bath shed, when all one really needs is a washing?” Satu replied in a whisper slyly, as she remembered the vision of Siiri and Miharu in detail. How would the Kelvic’s Heart Colors react to this?

And then Siiri spoke, reorganizing the party. It seemed Satu would have a new companion for this leg of the journey. Her blue eyes sized up the Myrian Hania, but she said nothing more.

Postby Koa on October 3rd, 2010, 3:27 am

Koa was uncharacteristically silent for the duration of the meeting and the subsequent trek across the wet and soggy lands of Falyndar once more. She had nothing else to say, her thoughts converged, hardened and focused on the task ahead, and she wasn’t about to allow silly distractions to avert her gaze on the shadows that lingered all about them.

When Siiri spoke of the possibilities regarding the Kisthkin, Koa nodded. It was indeed wise to assume they would do as instinct dictated and attempt to survive each year during the torrential downpour of summer. The fruit groves were the most hospitable place one would be able to find in the untamed wilds, but whether Koa agreed with this decision she did not say. No word of recognition escaped her lips; silent as a predator, watching. It was in this moment that Koa had reverted to the predator she was deep in her soul, when the Painted Eyes were not known as the Painted Eyes but of another name.

She stepped past the deyhan, the wolf-girl and Siiri, and took up her position with Pua in the rear, her glaive slick with rainwater. When she glanced at him, she gave him the most devious wink she could muster, but said not a word. They were moving, and she focused herself on the proper duty of guardian, her eyes trained on the expansive black arising from the canopies overhead.

Even now, Satu might have been able to sense that the Myrian warrior’s emotions had dulled, her instinct was at it’s peak, and her focus was strong. She knew what she must do, and she was going to do it to the best of her abilities.

Hunting by Numbers(Hunting Party)

Postby Pua on October 6th, 2010, 3:02 pm

Pua cocked one of his eyebrows expressively as he studied the white dreyhan. His own gentle warning, and the more pointed admonishing of the others, clearly did not reach her ears. The outsider seemed quite determined to plunge into the tooth filled waters. Shrugging, he put her from his mind. If she decided to provide the depths' denizens with an easy dinner there would be no rescue coming from him. Instead he silently watched as the Bone Man conferred briefly with Siiri about the Kisthkin. When Siiri turned to address the group, her relative position, by chance, placed him behind the other party members, giving him a good solid look at the back of everyone's shoulders.

The warrioress ordered a few changes within the party's marching formation, but seemed content to leave Pua trailing behind with the hot tempered Koa. He glanced briefly at her back a few paces ahead of his root top perch. At least she was agreeable on the eyes, he mused, and continuing to bait her into an explosive reaction should prove enjoyable. Better than babysitting the dreyhan at least, he didn't envy poor Hania. The party slowly filed out, with the wolf girl snuffling at the lead. Koa and Pua initially stepped off together, and Pua did not miss the young woman's flirtatious wink. Maybe, just maybe, she was not as tightly wound as Pua had first suspected. This revelation only served to fuel his desire to poke, prod, and otherwise torment her into some sort of entertaining explosion. It seemed that the white dreyhan in particular was getting under the woman's skin, maybe he could instigate that confrontation into something entertaining.

As he mused about possible forms of instigation Pua slowed his pace slightly, letting Koa move ahead and to his right. Tactically it was a sound practice to stagger your formation, preventing any attackers from disabling multiple allies with a single attack. He shifted his repeating crossbow into loose grip in his right hand, Pua respected the Jungle far to much to stow the weapon by it's strap across his back. As he walked his eyes flicked from tree to shadow, occasionally bringing Koa's lithe form into his peripheral vision. Inadvertently Pua found his gaze more often returning to the Myrian warrioress as she stalked through the underbrush maintaining her rear guard. Despite her obvious natural agile movements, it was clear to Pua that Koa was poised, alert, tense. Pua rolled his eyes and shook his head, if she kept it up like this she was likely to develop a cramp before to long, She really needed to loosen up a bit.

A casual glance downward afforded Pua a glimpse of movement by Koa's foot. He immediately tensed, but it was only a juvenile tree boa, not nearly large enough to be a disguised Dhani. Pua glared at it in disgust, he had bad memories of snakes. As he in turn passed the boa he brought his heel firmly down on the snake's head. Letting his gaze drift upward from Koa's boots, Pua took a moment to appreciate her toned calves and thighs. His eyes continued their upward travel, observing her shapely hindquarters as they swayed with her gait. Absently he thumbed his earring and a smirk twisted the corner of his mouth upward. Placing his feet silently he quickly closed the distance between himself and Koa. He firmly placed his free hand on her shoulder and spun he around, keeping his arm behind her shoulders to maintain her balance. Smiling down at her, from an inch above her face, Pua pressed his lips to hers, using his lips to gently part hers and slowly work his tongue into her mouth. After a brief moment he broke away, as he did so he finally returned her wink. Turning on his heel he strode casually off after the rest of the party, leaving Koa to follow at her leisure

Hunting by Numbers(Hunting Party)

Postby Hania on October 7th, 2010, 5:23 am

There was a long moment, perhaps too long, where Hania stared at Siiri. He didn't want to be shrugged off to the side with the strange one. His place was at the front, ahead of the group where he was useful. The middle of the convoy was for baggage and burdens. More over he found it to be safe. The scouts would encounter trouble first and have the first chance to claim victory. Pua and Koa would defend against ambushes which were usually bigger odds, and more fight. He would....watch the pale woman. The temptation to defy orders and skip ahead of the group bubbled up from his toes to his ears; after all how much could they really care about a deyhan?

His eyes finally turned on the pearly white form to take in what he could of her. She looked human enough but, were those scales? Dhani and snake scales instantly flicked into his mind and his fingers flexed impulsive on the shaft of the spear. And then there were gills! What ever god made such a queer race must have a cruel sense of humor; he liked that god. For a creature to be so mishmashed and still make it even this far into the Myri's lands, not including being invited into a hunting party, made him blink thoughtfully. He had never seen one of her race before so he had nothing to judge by but he was sure she wasn't quite sane by his standards. Perhaps being where she was meant she could do something special after all.

That all was neither here nor there at the present. The line was moving again so he removed himself from the seat on the root, absently enjoying the feeling of his feet returning to the soaked ground once again. The short Myrian soon found himself looking up, again, at the woman. "At least she attempted to correct her hair." It was almost worth smirking over but it wasn't safe to linger any longer than they already had. Hania hefted his weapon once before turning his nose to the ground. The rain was covering many other sounds as well as obscuring tracks in the dirt, he would have to keep his ears forward for the party leader. "Step fast outlander, if we stay there will be problems."

Postby Seyp on October 8th, 2010, 2:34 am

Seyp gave a slow nod listening to Siiri’s new plan and formation. His hand slipped behind his back, reaching into a side pouch of his backpack before pulling out a pair of sandals, the bottom of them having no groves or marks of treads, but was course all the same. He bent over for a moment, strapping them firmly to his feet before once again straitening himself. His hands were run through his hair then, slicking it back as heavy amounts of collected rain water poured down along his back. A slow roll of his head and shoulders were then given before he nodded to Siiri, after making one last check to ensure that his equipment was secure. Seyp the crouched slightly and pushed off forward strongly with his legs, breaking into a full run. His speed was that of most Myrian’s. Fast, but not so fast that it set him apart with the exceptional among Myri’s warriors.

Seyp’s feet found decent traction along the water soaked grounds, his sandals designed just for the purpose as he slammed his feet along the ground, and uproots of large trees, taking running leaps along the forest ground as several feet was covered in one leap. A shallow ditch soon appeared during the run, as Seyp’s legs pushed off from the edge with all his might, soaring through the air as one hand stretched upward. His hand slapped along a low riding tree branch, grasping it firmly with his fingers as forward motion was continued. His feet kicked out, his arm pulling him forward more by the branch as the rest of the gap over the ditch was covered, and he landing along the other side with a subtle thud.

Seyp’s eyes closed for a moment, focusing magical energies to swirl within them, when he opened them, a quick gaze around the area was given, searching for signs of auras that predators on the prowl would often emit. All he saw in his slow glimpse were shades of blue, black and green as normal aura’s of the foliage lingered about, the most movement seen caused by the smallest insects that the jungle housed, mostly in sheltered areas of the foliage itself. The sight of his Auristics then faded from his eyes, giving way to the normal colors of the jungle, darken slightly by heavy rain clouds that dropped the Goddess’ might will along the whole of Falyndar. “No predatory movement for the next two hundred yards,” Seyp then commented to Siiri, finding her ability to keep pace unsurprising at all.

Finally, after close to a ten chimes of heavy running, Seyp’s body stopped after a short swing along the hanging vine was had, his feet slamming into the ground. “Hold a moment,” he called out to Siiri, crouching down to the ground.

Seyp then began lifting stalks of large, palm tree like leaves, examining the stalk of the plant below. There several broken pieces were found, indicating that leaves had been stripped from the underside of the plant, but only so much that the upper leaves would cover such from the untrained eyes. “They’ve stripped some of the leaves for their bedding, to make their nests.” Seyp remarked, looking over the ground. “The grove is not far off, and they don’t travel farther than a quarter of a mile for nesting material. Not only to scout the area, but to mark the territory of their troupe.”

Seyp then slowly gazed up to Siiri, a couple strands of hair dangling loosely in front of his eyes as quick droplets of waters fell to the ground from their ends. “We’re close.” Seyp finally said lifting some more of the foliage to reveal tracks beneath them, sheltered somewhat from the rain but still not likely older than a half bell. An increasingly quick breath being taken as the pace of the run was beginning to catch up to him.

Hunting by Numbers(Hunting Party)

Postby Siiri on October 10th, 2010, 12:06 pm

OOCGonna speed up things a whole lot with this post. Let's get to the meat of the adventure.

Siiri kept up with the bone shaman easily enough, allowing the man to set the pace of their brief run, though she disliked the fact that they were running headlong into unscouted territory no matter near it was to the city. His declaration that the path was clear did little to assuage her concerns, as she knew not how he came about that conclusion. All things considered though, she supposed their little band could handle most threats they encounter easily enough. Still, the Myrian did not let up her guard as she ran beside Seyp, her spear parting leaves and vines in front of her to make sure that no creature lurked beyond before she passed through them. Oftentimes, she would use the ten foot weapon to pole vault over dubious-looking puddles as well, finding time to do so as she found the bone shaman's speed easy enough to match - easy compared to the two-hour breakneck routine she was subjected to daily in the army as part of their morning warm up. Thus Siiri was hardly winded when the man paused to inspect some tracks and leavings of the beasts they were after.

"That is very fresh," the woman agreed, noting that the heavy rain would have easily obliterated or at least obscured any creature's leavings in this environment. Makutsi's downpours completely cleansed the land.

"We should send a couple of feelers to scout ahead. I don't want the troupe to know we're coming before we even see them." The woman waited until the others caught up with them before continuing, asking everyone to gather round so she did not have to scream to make herself heard over the pounding rain. "Alright, the troupe is near and we can't all go or we'll alert them of our presence. Hania, you will lead Seyp to the Kisthkin, get as close to them as you can for the shaman to observe the alpha. Miharu," Siiri called, pulling her bondmate in lupine form close to her and scratching the wolf just behind the ear. "I want you to go with them, your natural camouflage and stealth will help in getting them close and your senses can warn them of any trouble. No need to worry about them smelling you, I think the rain has washed away our scents more than a bell ago. But if you think they still can...I leave it to you, your senses are the sharpest around here."

She looked up at the others then, catching each of their gazes. "The rest of us will stay here to set up a rendezvous point in case they get detected by the troupe and are chased. They will lead the Kisthkin here and we will fight them off as we retreat. I doubt the creatures would be willing to give up the fruit grove and won't chase after us very far. Remember: no killing if you can help it, especially not the alpha. Not until the shaman gives the go ahead.

"Pua, take to one of the nearby trees and provide cover for those of us in the ground. Give me a signal when you find a perch, I want to know where everyone is at all times. Koa,"
Siiri turned to the other warrior of the group, noting the slightly flustered look upon the girl's face. She raised an eyebrow but did not inquire as to why. "You better go with him, I don't want any snake or whatever sneaking up on his ass and taking him out. Watch your backs at all times."

Lastly, the Myrian turned to the Konti, the only outsider in the group barring Miharu. "You. Satu. You stay here with me. We will play as bait." She grinned at the pale creature then, though there was no mirth in her smile, only anticipation of violence and slaughter. "We will hold the line here if the shaman's group petches up. Worst case scenario. Otherwise, we just sit here and you entertain me with stories of glitter faeries while hoping no other predator comes by and eats us."

Her orders given, Siiri sent the others off to their respective duties, jabbing her spear upright on the ground and crouched down to prepare for a long wait. "Come back here when you're ready to take out the Alpha," she called to Seyp one last time.
Apologies to everyone I'm threading with, but it's like the Danaides for me right now.

If Satu thought to rattle or upset Miharu with her comment about the bath shed, she obviously didn't quite understand what she was dealing with. The Kelvic didn't grasp the implied attempt at unbalancing her, her Heart unreactive to it, and just snarled as she shifted and followed her packmate's instructions.

She had no trouble with the run - had more trouble, actually, holding back and ensuring that all of the others made it without getting lost. She wasn't sure whether the deyhan would manage to clear the gap, but she waited patiently just to be sure before she lept agily across it herself.

When they paused to regroup, she padded up to Siiri's side and flopped down to rest at her feet, giving a soft whine of pleasure at the scratch to her ears. I will play guard to them. Have fun with the fish-girl, she said through the bond, tongue lolling out in a wolfish grin.

When the final instructions were given and everyone made to move out again, Miharu rose and trotted over to get another good sniff of Hania and one of Seyp, cementing those two in her mind. Then she waited for Hania to lead the way. I hope they remember to look up, she sent back to her bondmate, laughter threading the line between them.
