Hunting by Numbers(Hunting Party)

Postby Satu on October 15th, 2010, 5:04 am

When Hania told Satu to ‘step fast’, the Konti had no idea she would be asked to run through the jungle at break neck speed. After long hours of suvai training, Satu’s endurance was high, but that training was nothing like a race such as this. Satu ran as hard as she was able, but she could not keep up with the Myrian’s longer legs and denser musculature. Compared to them, she was a willow o’ wisp child, trying to fly. In places the Myrians traversed easily, Satu had to scramble over obstacles using both arms and legs. Pushing herself, she jumped branches and brush. Many were the times she stumbled, or tripped, often barely managing to catch herself, before losing balance completely. Twigs and leaves grabbed at her braided hair and pulled it loose from its bindings. And the white strands flowed, stark against the backdrop of dark foliage.

It was none too soon for Satu when they finally reached the next stop. Worn from the run, Satu doubled over, trying to catch her breath in the middle of the small clearing. Gills flapping, she worked to suck air into her lungs, and her chest heaved. It was never more apparent, creatures of the sea were not meant for life in this harsh jungle. Hands on her knees, Satu turned her head slightly and looked at the undergrowth of leaves and brush all around her. Sounds hummed behind the rain pattern and her gaze went unfocused for a time. Lost in her own imaginings, her mind wandered, until Siiri’s voice penetrated her thoughts. The warrior had more to show her!

Even after she straightened to her full height, she was still shorter than most of the Myrians. She looked up, listening. Hunting. How could Satu understand the intricacies of it? It was not a natural or learned thing for her. The ways of ambush and of holding lines meant nothing in her mind. “Don’t kill the alpha,” Satu repeated, mouthing the words. But the Konti was not sure she knew the difference between the alpha and the others. She assumed it to be the largest of the beasts, but was it? And what did one do when they were to be bait? Satu looked to Siiri; she would follow the Messenger’s lead and do as she did. Siiri grinned and violence shone within it. And so Satu returned the expression honestly. Rubbing the bridge of her crooked nose with two fingers, the Konti crouched down next to Siiri, to wait. “You want me to tell you a story?” Satu asked incredulously.

Hunting by Numbers(Hunting Party)

Postby Pua on October 18th, 2010, 10:50 pm

This jaunt was turning out to be quite interesting for Pua. Despite the normal trepidation he always experienced when venturing out from Taloba's protective walls, he was actually enjoying himself in the jungle for the first time in a long time. Of course it did help to have such amusing company as he wandered along behind the troop, keeping the shadows away from the rear. Humming softly to himself, he marched right up to where Siiri was examining some tracks with the dead doctor. He looked her over once, gave her as cheekiest grin, and promptly plopped down on his back. With his hands propped behind his head he listened to Siiri's next set of orders while staring through the rain to the treetops. "Tree's?" Pua cocked an inquisitive eyebrow in Siiri's direction. "I thought we were hunting the monkeys, not mimicking them. And you know very well that I can't watch my back Siiri," he admonished playfully, "Neck doesn't bend that way." He jerked his thumb over his shoulder in Koa's direction, "I'll watch her backside instead, okay?" Pua offered with his customary grin and a chuckle.

Rolling to his feet once more, and spun slowly in a circle, inventorying the trees immediately surrounding their makeshift campsite. One of the great things about the jungle's trees was that they grew so large, providing plenty of limbs capable of supporting a Myrian sentry comfortably. The downside of the tree's impressive height however was that the lowest branches tended to be quite high off the ground, making starting a climb a difficult endeavor. Finally finding the tree he was looking for, he nodded his head at it to let Siiri know where he was going, "Three owls when I'm set," he informed her. Slipping his repeating crossbow across his back with the strap, Pua rubbed his palms together, using the friction to dry them somewhat. With the puff of expelled breath, Pua began a headlong sprint across the small clearing directly at his chosen tree.

Picking up speed as he approached, Pua first planted a foot on one of the trees protruding roots for better leverage he ran straight up the tree's trunk. Pua's first two steps propelled him nicely upwards, but on the third step the soaked bark conspired against him and his foot slipped. Flailing his arms upward he just managed to wrap his wrist around the lowest limb. Swinging his other arm up to the limb, Pua took a moment to dangle and reset his bearings. Keeping a tight grip on the limb, he walked his feet slowly up the trunk until he could swing his leg over and roll himself up on top of the limb. Standing gingerly with a hand braced against the trunk, Pua looked to the next lowest limb. It was just out of his reach. Bending slightly at the knees he pushed off his current perch, but the his rain hampered traction fail him again and his feet slipped out from under him. Instead of landing gently upon the limb like he had intended, Pua's midsection slammed into the target limb, illiciting a loud "Oof" has the wind was knocked from his body. Pua struggle up onto the limb and sat with his back to the trunk to catch his breath. Luckily, the the next limb was within arms reach of Pua and he was able to pull himself upwards simply with the rippling muscles of his arm.

"Petching overgrown fern," He muttered kicking the tree's trunk. Looking downward, Pua was surprise at just how far he had climbed. From his vantage point on the relatively thick limb he had a good veiw of the campsite and the surrounding jungle, while still being low enough to be able to fire his crossbows with reasonable accuracy. Satisfied with himself, Pua cupped his hands to his mouth and gave three short hoots down to his waiting companions below. Settling in against the tree trunk with his crossbow across his lap, Pua settled in for a long and hopefully uneventful wait.

Postby Seyp on October 23rd, 2010, 11:43 pm

Seyp began to move through the forest, traveling beside Miharu as she walked in between himself and Hania. Now was the time to work, too keep one’s senses sharp as he kept his pace moderate, watching his footing and avoiding stepping on anything that would make any unnecessary noise. The rainfall may have been heavy, but that didn’t mean the snapping of a twig or tree branch under one’s foot couldn’t be heard by the primates they sought. Seyp’s gaze traveled up from the ground occasionally, indeed checking the limbs of the trees and nearby perches. It was another part of the primate’s element, to use the trees and vines of the jungles to move around, especially if in a hurry. The true benefit the group had going for them was that the Kithskin were one of a small handful of species located in the jungle that weren’t openly aggressive, not towards others outside of their species. Troupes would often conflict with each other over territories, but when it came to other species, especially predatory ones, they would often flee, using their climbing, speed and agility to get into the trees and escape what would eat them.

Most often it would be the alpha who would engage in direct conflict with any predators, doing it’s part to protect the rest of the troupe and allow them to flee to the sanctuary of the jungle trees before disengaging himself to do the same. All in all, it likely wouldn’t be difficult to separate the Alpha from the troupe, to give it chase. The difficult part would be bringing it down before it managed to circle back around and rejoin with the rest of it’s kin, causing them to retreat from the entire troupe and try again later.

Seyp spotted such signs of escape as broken tree limbs and scratches along the bark gave clues where a Kithskin had climbed or landed along a tree limb after swinging or leaping through the trees themselves. Seyp gave a short bird call, alerting Hania to such signs as kept himself low, and often slipping behind trees or high growing foliage to conceal himself from the eyes of any Kithskin who might have been standing sentry in the trees for the rest of the troupe, so far he had spotted none. He relied on Miharu’s nose to act as a means of detection, to give warning of anything other than the three of them being within their vicinity. True, the rains masked scents, washed them away quickly, but those scents would still linger in the air for a short moment before such would happen, and Miharu’s nose was sharp, sharper than a great deal of the animals that could be found within the jungle itself.

Seyp soon came to a stop, crouching down low as an edge covered the view of a upcoming, large, indentation within the jungle grounds. Small echoes of screeches and chirps could be heard, the calls of their pray. It was at that time that Seyp finally fell to his belly, crawling low under the foliage of the jungle, his eyes gazing over the ground and plants for insects that would give hindrance with their bites and stings as he slowly navigated his way to the edge. Seyp, after some time, finally peered through two lightly spread leaves, gazing down into the shallow pit of the grounds. The Kithskin troupe, around twenty of them in all, were gathered below, most of them huddled together. Some of them went about with their usual activity that nature often guided them to do. Some of the ate fruits from the nearby orchards, others gathered around each other, grooming one another as insects were pulled from fur and then basically eaten, while others still went about sleeping or maintaining the nests that had been built.

Seyp spent close to five chimes, intensely examining each of them. How they moved, distinguishing marks, the social interaction between them. Finally, Seyp slowly pointed down towards the troupe. “There,” he whispered Miharu and Hania, “in the north eastern corner. The one with the silver streak of fur down the left side of it’s back. That’s our Alpha.”

Seyp fell silent, still observing the Alpha primate for a long moment as he lounged about, letting females of the troupe groom his fur. A subtle aggressive yell was given to another male Kithskin as it approached, causing it to shy away and move another location. Seyp watched with great interest, almost falling into a meditative state of sorts for a long moment, his mind contemplative. Finally, Seyp turned his gaze to Miharu, looking over the wolf for a long moment. “I wonder if you might do something for me?” Seyp then requested in a soft tone as his djed began to flow into his eyes and he slowly began looking towards the Kithskin, a world of colors and auras swimming about him as the Kithskin’s outline turned blue, with hues of orange and red. “If you could, makes some aggressive sounds, as if you were stalking prey and getting ready to take it down. I wish to see how the Alpha reacts to signs of danger to start things off.”

Miharu had recognized the instant they truly approached the encampment of the Kithskin, nosing Seyp in the back of the knee to let him know. Her nose was indeed quite keen, and could distinguish the difference between a trail taken once by her prey and a trail taken a half dozen times. She knew, therefor, that they were coming up on something big, and let him know.

But she didn't stop him, because they weren't close enough, simply slithered through the underbrush alongside him. Her time in the heat of Falyndar had caused her to shed much of her insulating undercoat of fur, leaving her much more sleek than any wolf in Taldera would be - but it made it much easier to slide through the thick undergrowth of the jungle without being hindered, her silken fur slipping right past the waxy leaves of the plants.

When Seyp laid on his belly to observe their prey, Miharu settled beside him and watched them with bright golden eyes. Where he studied who the individuals were and how they interacted, Miharu noted the way they arranged themselves around the camp, which of them were in defensive positions, where the boundaries of the camp were exactly, and how they entered and exited it most often.

When Seyp turned to her, she met his gaze with all evidence of intelligence, and nodded to his request. She wished she had some way to communicate with him, but it seemed non-verbal would be the only option left them at the moment. So she bumped her cold, wet nose against his cheek once, then turned to sneak out of their hiding place.

Once she returned back to the trail they'd been on, she shifted back to her human form and stared around her. Carefully, as carefully as she could, she tip-toed her way through about 100 yards of jungle, circling the camp and making sure not to get too close. It was a long trip - she had to watch the placement of her feet, make sure she wasn't breaking twigs or snapping leaves off the plants around them. It would have been much easier to sneak through the underbrush in the form of a wolf, but that would have left a pungent scent trail - right back to her companions' hiding place.

Perhaps 20 chimes later, a loud, haunting howl echoed through the jungle - heard even above the pelting rain, though it was faint and hard to pinpoint its exact location. Now she would wait. If the silver-striped one pursued her, she would lead it back to Siiri and Satu and help them take him down. If not... well, she would give whoever it was a merry chase until they finally tired of tracking her down.

Postby Siiri on October 24th, 2010, 2:28 pm

"No, I'm keeping you around for your sunny and cheerful disposition," Siiri distractedly muttered at Satu as she watched Pua and Koa find their perch. "I'd hate to be sad when monkeys get her and start beating on our asses."

Finding that their long range support had settled on a favorable spot, the Myrian's gaze descended on the Konti once more, to find the shorter woman expectantly waiting for a serious answer from her. Siiri sighed.

Image

"No Satu, we're going to sit here very quiet-like until trouble comes our way." She pulled out one of her many daggers and inscribed a crude square on the soft, muddy ground. "Do you know what that is?" Not really expecting a reply from the Konti, she continued to answer her own question. She added to X's in the middle of the square. "That's where we are right now; it's called the 'Kill Box'. Low ground, relatively open area - good place for a scrap. This is where people go to die.

"But we're not going to be doing that."

Image

Siiri drew two more X's outside of the square, at the top. "This is Seyp and Hania, luring the Kithskin towards us if anything goes wrong. When that happens, you and I will -" She paused and gave Satu a once over, then retracted her previous statement, unsure if the deyhan was up to what she had in mind. "When that happens, I will try and make myself appear threatening to the monkeys and we will engage them. We will create as much chaos as we can against the troupe. Your little prickly weapons will come in handy here. You can paralyze a number of them without killing any. This will force the monkeys not to chase us too far or risk leaving those you've paralyzed to other predators." Another X was drawn on the outside of the square but this time near the top leftmost corner, away from the two signifying Seyp and Hania. "Miharu will most likely come from the flank to join us before the other two arrive." It was an action she knew her bondmate would execute. With her natural instincts, the girl had more sense in hunting than the rest of the group combined.

Image

Lastly, the Myrian drew two last X's to mark the location of Pua and Koa relative to their position on the square. "Pua will probably be able to unload at least a salvo with his quick firing crossbow so we do not get overwhelmed. The Alpha would probably be after the biggest threat. Hopefully, it chooses me. If not, I'll force it to change its mind." Siiri's grin returned and there was anticipation in her emerald eyes aside from the predatory gleam they had earlier. She was a woman of action and it was hard enough to curb her restlessness while she waited for Seyp's group to return. Explaining strategy to Satu seemed to relieve some of her excitement, though she was unsure if her audience was receptive to her instructions.

"We will be fighting a running battle so be sure to be quick on your feet," she added as a conclusion. "Any questions?

"...or you can just tell me a story if you like."

Siiri sighed once more as she pulled out Slayer, readying the blade in case she had to act fast, though she was sure it would be quite a while yet before the others returned. Still, when out in the dangerous jungles of Falyndar, it didn't hurt to be prepared.

Hunting by Numbers(Hunting Party)

Postby Satu on October 28th, 2010, 5:49 am

Siiri’s tone was serious, but her Heart was filled with Excitement, even in such a critical time as this. It beat and beat against Satu’s senses, wanting her Heart to feel as it did. The Konti listened to the pounding of it as she closely watched the group leader draw diagrams in the dirt. The Konti studied the diagram and but no questions came to Satu’s mind, so she simply shook her head. She might not have understood why they were doing what they were doing out in the jungle, but she fully understand what Siiri expected her to do. “You want me to be an X... You want me not to kill the Alpha. Or the others…” Satu said, equally serious. “You want me to be defensive, and deflect their attacks. You want me to be who I was before, like the times in the Pavilion… You want me to run away, and not be Strong.” Her eyes were grim and her face clouded, as if she had just been terribly betrayed.

And as Siiri pulled out Slayer, Satu was reminded of the heated exchange they had had before with their weapons and their fists. Still, the Konti thought the larger weapon unwieldy compared to her smaller, yet quicker suvai. And even though Siiri had bested Satu with brute force, Satu was still confident in the whale bones. Sitting on her heels near Siiri, the suvai fighter also pulled out her twin weapons. So small the suvai looked compared to Siiri’s blade. But Satu rotated them, first the left blade, and then the right. The white bones spun rapidly, propelled by her strong wrists. “Watch yourself.” Satu cautioned the Myrian, “You do not want to be pricked by these little toothpicks… again.”

The Myrian snorted, her eyes rolling up at the Konti's idle threat. "Don't trouble yourself, deyhan. Before we ever go against each other again, I would take your silly toys, break them, and tell you where I would put them. You will not like it." Siiri stared at Satu menacingly, as if daring her to try and attack. But only for a moment; the larger woman suddenly let out a burst of laughter, not caring that she did it loudly, knowing full well that the pounding rain would drown out the sound. "I like your spirit, Satu. You are like a tiger cub. Playful."

Looking up at the sky, Siiri stood up once more, restless. Depending on how the other three's efforts in observing the troupe of Kisthkin, they might be here a while. Silently, she sent a message to Miharu through their bond, reminding the Kelvic to alert her should the scouting group encounter any trouble in their task. She did not know if the thought would still carry through the distance that separated them by the Myrian held trust in the bond she shared with the wolf-girl.

"Best get comfortable," she advised Satu. "I think our wait will take far longer than a couple of hours."

Sheathing Slayer once more, Siiri dragged a large piece of fallen branch to where she had been huddling with the Konti and sat upon it, breaking off a small piece from the log. Pulling out a small rusty blade from her pack, the Myrian began to whittle at the wood, hardly looking at what she was doing. Her efforts were hampered by the quality of the blade but she did not seem to mind.

"So tell me Konti, why do a lot of your people have this power to heal? Do you all worship this goddess of healing?" she asked to make conversation. Despite the lightness of her tone, Siiri's eyes still darted about, inspecting their makeshift campsite of any signs of threats.

The Kithskin reacted quickly and with a panic, the alpha giving quick screeches as his hands slammed his hands along the ground, pulling up foliage and dirt with the strength of his strikes as a quick leap centered his presence within the troupe. The rest of the troupe moved in blurred movements, their bodies traveling over open ground in a few short strides before their bodies leapt up into the trees nearby. The Alpha stayed along the ground the whole time, making only short threatening forward motions toward the source of Miharu’s threatening howl.

The Kithskin were a defensive species, however, only taking offensive action towards a creature that attacked. Rarely they would rush out to attack a creature save for in defense of their own. The only time they became aggressive in nature was when other troupes began invading their territory. It was obvious at the moment that all of the other Kithskin were safely in the trees, the Alpha finally raced over, taking to the tree himself.

Seyp slumped in his lay, his hand traveling over his chin as he observed the Alpha moving through the branches of the jungle tree limbs, it’s aura shining more fiercely and becoming a bright orange. He gave a slow exhale. “As I suspected,” Seyp said as he looked over to Hania, giving a nudge of his head, suggesting they go back to regroup with the others before tout whistles were given to the air, alerting Miharu a signal to fall back, hoping that Siiri had taught her of such. “We’ll discuss such with the others. I have a few ideas, but wish to discuss planning an preparation with the others.”

Hunting by Numbers(Hunting Party)

Postby Hania on November 17th, 2010, 9:19 pm

The shorter Myrian shadowed the taller ever trying to slink through the greenery as quietly as possible, often taking advantage of the extra company and watching how the kelvic traversed the terrain since she was quietest of all. He tried to step only on softer ground, or mossy patches; pretending the rain didn't drown out nearly every sound. Foot placement, scan ahead, foot placement, scan the trees, read the ground, foot placement. And then they were crawling under branches, over dead leaves, and through mud until a suitable observation post presented it's self.

Syep wanted to study, had to watch the beasts to learn about them; Hania had to watch Syep's back as he did so. The bone crafter knew what he needed and what had to be done and as such what seemed like a good idea to Hania might not produce the desired results. So he would take guard while the other watched. There wasn't much to guard against save the chance of a Kisthkin lookout they hadn't spotted and the annoying crawling critters. Hania killed four beetles, two spiders, and an ugly centipede during the time they watched. The latter he cut up into tiny pieces until it finally stopped moving.

If Hania let his mind relax, and unfocus for a brief moment, then he would agree with the feeling in his gut. However much he wished to distance himself from magic, and those that wielded it, he admired Syep. He knew from personal experience that instinct was a big factor for surviving the area outside of Taloba but Myrians were not animals; in a one on one match an animal would win. Thinking fast, planning ahead, and being smart was what leveled the playing field. And even if Syep needed to study these animals for a different reason but he was using his head to do so. He watched the prey as much as he could, when exterminating poisons insects didn't take prescience. It would take team work to bring down even a female of this species. There would be no chance of taking it on alone unless he'd prepared traps ahead of time, which was unlikely.

Mental notes about the alpha were made from what he could observe, and hear. He would like to add some of the kisthkin calls to his repertoire, he could only attempt to mimic the sounds in a whisper at the moment, he would have to practice later. When Miharu started her howling he studied how the animals fled, how they moved in a hurry, just where and how they climbed the trees. Several ideas presented themselves to him, but he would hold his tongue until asked for an opinion. A small jerk of the head was given in response to Syep signaling that he would follow once the other had fallen back. Whatever plan they would come up with would require teamwork he wasn't accustomed to, and he hoped nothing had happened with the others to upset the tentative peace there was.

Hunting by Numbers(Hunting Party)

Postby Satu on November 26th, 2010, 4:35 pm

The Myrian dared her! It was there in the warrior’s eyes! Fight built within the troubled Konti as Satu felt the light weight of her suvai assuring in her webbed fingers. “You are much too slow Myrian, to catch me before they pricked you,” Satu simply said, and she matched the other woman’s laughter, though there was no jest in it. She was serious; now that she had seen what Siiri could do to her should her precious suavi be lost. Satu was on edge, watching the warrior, ready to act. And the Konti watched carefully as pieces of wood fell from Siiri’s work with the blade upon the wood, small pieces falling to the ground.

“Rak’keli? You know of Her?” Satu asked surprised, causing her to look up quickly. It shocked her that the warrior even asked. What trick was this? The HeartSeer was untrusting, and studied the Myrian before she answered, “She is of a pair, sister to Avalis. Rak’keli is generous and forgiving. She said the word with emphasis as if the Myrian did not know it. “It is a gift to heal, a privilege to receive her Mark… and a labor too. It is study, years of learning. She lives at the Opal Temple on Konti Island. People come from all over Mizahar to learn and train, and to worship Her. I have known many healers there, but I followed a different path with Avalis, her sister.” Her small island was filled with followers of Rak’keli, Satu remembered them, dedicated and loyal to the goddess’ vision of healing. “They can heal any manner of illness, both physical and…” and a strange look crossed Satu’s face. It was as if for a moment she had remembered something long forgot, and she stared at the wood clips scattered on the wet ground, silent for a moment lost in her own thoughts. And she whispered, as if in secret, “They can deny healing to no one, friend or foe. No matter what their actions have been...”
