Breaking the Ice

Aoren gave a resolute nod. As he had suspected he was not a powerful enough Healer to mend the ailment that was slowly eating away at Ricky. That did not dishearten him however. If anything it spurred him into thinking of ways that the man might be further aided. There were perhaps remedies through Philtering that he might be able to produce but those took time and resources. He might have been able to help Ricky were they in Syliras and he still had the convenience of Mistress Blackleaf’s lab but he possessed no such resources in Zeltiva. Resting a hand upon Isikai’s head he rubbed at the tufts of the dog’s ear thinking quietly.

The emotional reaction of the blonde haired man, Gale, didn’t surprise him. How was he supposed to react? He obviously held a very deep connection with Ricky on a level that Aoren could sympathize with. He had been devastated when he’d learned that Ileera was gone. The red haired Svefra girl who had become his family had punched a hole in his heart with her absence. With those thoughts he felt slightly guilty. It had been some time since he had turned his thoughts to her. He imagined that as time passed he would not think of her quite as often with such pain in his heart. If he could spare this small group of friends and family the pain that he was very familiar with though, maybe that would make up for it in some way. Then it struck him.
Syliras.

All is not lost, friend.” Aoren’s face took on a contemplative expression. He was thinking deeply. He might not have possessed the power to relieve Ricky of his illness but he certainly knew someone who might.

I am not from Zeltiva. I hail from Syliras to the Northwest of this city. I may not be able to cure you but the hope for finding a cure for your illness may lie there.” The more Aoren thought about it, the more certain of it he was. He gave a firm nod. His words were loud enough for all those gathered to hear though whether or not that would stop Gale from storming off he did not know. He hoped that what he could offer them provided some measure of comfort, however small.

Lady Sil’ria. The stories of her gifts are quite legendary in the city of Syliras. She is a known Priestess of Rak’keli and a powerful healer. I often worked with her during my time as an apprentice to the apothecary of Syliras. If anyone exists who might be able to help you, Ricky, it’s her.” In fact Aoren was almost certain of it. He had never personally seen Sil’ria heal someone but he had worked with her in the apothecary shop before he was capable of infusing Healing magic into philters by himself. She and Mistress Blackleaf worked closely to help keep the citizens of the Fortress City of Peace in good health.

You may want to ask around the city in search of merchants in the employ of one Leo Valini. He is a powerful and wealthy trader from Syliras. I traveled here with one of his caravans. If you move quickly you may just be able to accompany them back to the city.” He gave Ricky and his wife a humble smile nodding. He knew that they could find the help that they needed there. So long as they moved with haste and reached the gates of the city in time the Knights would assist them in reaching Sil'ria if they explained the circumstance of their arrival.

Breaking the Ice

Pulren felt very uneasy. It should have been for the news of his friend and leader's illness, but instead it was a growing feeling of helplessness. He had learned many things during his season as a Guard, changed his life for the better. However, he couldn't fight this disease with his trident or his fists. There was literally nothing he could do. He looked at Portraits and saw the man well up with tears. Pulren wanted to cry, too, but he couldn't. He just folded his hands and looked down at the ground.

In a city of learning, Pulren's selfishness and sloth were sins. Not the sins of Wizards, but a close second. He decided at that moment to push himself in all areas of life so that he could be of assistance in any kind of problem. He never wanted to feel the emotions that were coursing through his veins again. Cocking his head up, he listened as the healer spoke. This man seemed to be of the world, having come from the fabled walled city of Syliras. Pulren suspected many sights had been seen and deeds experienced by him. All he had done personally was fish and clean up after Pal for his whole life, ignorant of the world around him.

"I wish I could do more for you, Sarge. I will surely pray to the Sea Father to send you on your journey in peace and haste. If your wife or child need anything in your absence, they can surely call on me. I will make sure that they remain safe. You have enough to worry about on your journey." His eyes met Ricky's wife's and he nodded, repeating the motion to the young child. That little boy had parents who loved him and Pulren would make sure that he grew up with them at his side, free from a life of wondering.

Breaking the Ice

oocI'd went ahead and thought to assume the words Aoren said would halt or slow Gale in his tracks. :P Seeing as how a new "curtain of hope" seems to have been revealed, of course that leads to the whole discussion on who goes and who stays... even though that's already decided OOC. Still, should be wrapped up quick enough in a couple of posts, which will lead to Ricky asking for those remaining to watch over Martin while he's gone. Gale of course will handle the bulk of babysitting but Pulren and Aoren are welcome to babysit too, so we can do a few threads where I Guest ST as Martin while you two interact with him. :) It's something we'll discuss through pm, for now though we'll just get this wrapped up here soon.

The reactions. The tension. The heartache. Both Gale and Hannah were literally astonished... mortified even! While Hannah had taken to turn her back to everyone and watch the fountain she too had tears streaming out her eyes, but of course Gale's reaction was more prone to lead him into an overwhelming meltdown now that he'd heard the news. And then just when it seemed as the attempt to heal his illness was met with the only inevitable expectation, the artist found himself in need to be alone as he started off. Not in any means of a hurry but all the same a walk that would lead him away from the group, which all the more concerned Ricky as he thought to speak out to the Godfather. Nothing. The will to utter even a sound fell short. He could only try to comfort the woman he held close to him, as Telion cried with her head rested against his chest while Martin was in her arms. The poor kid...

Martin knew nothing about this. All he knew was that his parents were sad now, everyone seemed to feel a sort of sadness somehow. This in turn led him to watch everyone he could with a interval in the change of his looks, the main focus of his attention being his parents of course as they were the faces he knew the most. Just like dat... It's over den. Defeat. It was a concept he didn't think he'd accept, but he'd already started to seeing as how his options were pretty much limited. Then of course the glimmer of hope, the chance of opportunity that somehow still existed. Aoren hadn't the ability to heal him but he knew of someone who did, someone else who resided in the place he hailed from before his venture brought him here. Syliras. Ricky himself had been there once, to go there again was a feat he didn't intend to accomplish, but if that meant living to see another day then...

"You mean this Lady Sil'ria can heal Ricky?" The sudden spark of hope led Telion to plead for assurance, the only chance that he had an indication to the lengths she would ask in order to save her beloved husband.

"Sil'ria. She's a Konti that works as a healer in Syliras, I heard of her in my time there. If big guy there speaks truly then she can help Ricky all right." Hannah filled them in with her small bit of information, though vague in comparison to Aoren's it was still something she had to go on as well. The ginger wiped her face quickly and sniffled only once before she turned around, arms crossed as she walked towards the parents in the center of the group. "If we leave within the next few days we can travel with the Leo fellow he mentioned, he'll be able to help escort us there."

The look in Hannah's face was serious, as was Telion's, as they both believed Ricky didn't have a say in the matter. Of course in truth he really didn't seeing as how this was his only shot in living to see another day, to surviving and in turn being there to watch his only son grow older as life continued on...
"Aight aight! Ain't gotta tell me twice, Oi'll be sure t' get me t'ing's ready." He told Hannah glumly as he hated the idea of leaving behind his family, of course Pulren was gracious enough to offer prayers and words. Ricky offered a small crooked smile to the guard, as he no doubt felt he would owe the man in the future to come. It was nice to know he had friends that would look out for his wife and child while he was gone.

"Pff! Petch that shyke!" Ricky's face dropped into a look of awe as his brow furrowed, his eyes sharply fallen to the face of his wife as she seemed to have a say in this. "I appreciate being looked after and all, but I'm not just going to sit this one out. I'm coming along this time, you won't leave me behind like you did last time Ricky." She argued.

"Telion-" He tried to reason with her but she interrupted him with a stern look, and a fierce attitude no less as she refused to be told otherwise.

"I nearly lost you to a group of pirates Ricky! Pirates! I'm not goin to sit around and let you run off with the risk of dying, you need me with you and I'm coming whether you like it or not!" Martin started to cry a little then, the aggression in Telion's voice a startling appearance to both the boy and his father as Ricky pointed out his reason for reason.

"An' Martin? De wilds ain't no safe place fer yew, especially fer no babe as well. Who's gonna take care o' our child if ye're wit' us?" The point was enough to leave Telion speechless the moment she tried to find something to say, puzzlement soon replaced her tempered expression as she thought hard on what to do. Ricky had a valid point. Telion herself never traveled outside the city, and of course Martin was by far not old enough to last long in the wilderness. Even if they were sticking to a route to travel the road itself would prove too long and stressful, which wasn't something Ricky wanted placed on child nor mother for that matter.

She pondered it for a moment and looked to the others around them, Hannah intensely curious as her gaze sharpened on Telion as well. She knew. She knew what Telion was thinking, yet she couldn't be outright with it as it wasn't her right to say. It was up to Telion, who then made up her mind, as she then looked to Gale with tears held in her eyes. "Gale." She murmured at first, her eyes on the man who'd remained frozen during the whole conversation. "Gale can watch Martin. He saved me at the time, he can take care of Martin while we're gone." She suggested as she comforted Martin a little more, the child still anxious from the change of energy felt in the air.

Notes

➢ I enjoyed this thread even though it was a thread of bad news, the different reactions was great to read about. Shame that it didn't continue, would have been interesting to see if anyone fought over the duties to take care of Martin.
➢ I have to admit, I couldn't see much in the way of skills, even though I just wanted to throw them out at you guys, so I did my best to keep an eye out for them. If you feel that I missed something, then by all means send me a message.
