The mad man pointedly simply continued his mad cackling at Aoren’s attempts to reason with him, the res the reimancy had generated being rapidly sucked into the growing black vortex faster than the mage could transmute it. However Ricky’s little charge had not been something expected, though it would not be without cost the Wave Guard. The man continued to drain Pulren dry and by the time of the other Wave Guard’s intervention the Leecher had almost drained the other man to the point of death.

As Ricky sprinted forward his bulk would overwhelm the Portal, however his left pinky finger would get caught in The Other Side as it did collapse. The digit was cleanly severed, the Wave Guard now missing one of his fingers. However his tackle was successful in detaching the Leecher from Pulren, preventing the other man’s death. The Leecher’s head smashed into the ground, the force of Ricky’s impact enough to cause his eyes to roll back into his skull as he fell from consciousness with a look of utter surprised upon his face.

Those others that had been standing there were safe and Lani had dragged Pulren from the way to avoid further harm coming to him. So in the end the group had one man unconscious, and now one missing a finger with the rest of them no doubt being shaken up by this turn of events. The odd individual did peek out from what they were doing to see what the commotion was about but none moved to assist. Due to Ricky’s injury and the head wound the Leecher had suffered, as well as Pulren’s condition, Aoren would feel a very strong tugging at his Healing mark as the compulsion to heal was drumming in his mind. No matter who was the person he needed to heal.

OOCI think I'll bow out here and leave you all to your devices for the rest of the thread. Hope I managed to shake things up a little. :)

A Stroll Down East Street

The darkness was deep. Deeper than the ocean and deeper than the depths of the ocean. Deeper than that. All Pulren could hear was the sound of his ragged breaths, the scene which unfolded around him in the street a distant memory. It was like being closed up in a dark room, no candle light to gain purchase from. He felt his hands and his head in that ebon cloak, a cold seeping in from all around, though it was no wind. It was just a slow and steady drop in the ambient temperature, but again, without any light to see its source, it only added to the cold.

He felt like he might be on his knees. He couldn't really remember what position he was in or how he had gotten there. Slowly, as one might experience the acquisition of night vision on the periphery, details began to form. Not of Pulren's surroundings, but of his own body. The shape of his fingers came first, logic and the mind developing the hands that were their origin. Forearms and elbows and shoulders. Chest and torso. A neck went up as hips and legs went down. Feeling a slight bit of comfort at the return of body, he felt up to his head and found ears, a brow, a chin and....

"Wait a minute." he said to the darkness. His fingers crept inward as they traveled down the missing place, the deepening hole which was once his face. Panic hit Pulren like a bucket of cold water, his breathing becoming rapid and shallow. Where was his face? "Where the petch is my face!?", he cried out into the nothing. The flesh simply descended into a funnel kind of shape, like a sinkhole in the wetlands. He felt the urge to stand but his legs would not, could not agree. The cold crept in deeper, small flakes of ice forming around his face as it seemed that all of the air and warmth was disappearing through his own disappearing countenance.

Pulren's shoulders slumped as the grim realization of despair and futility began to catch him. He started to get an idea that perhaps he should just lie down. Lying down would help, his thoughts congealed towards. His hand pressed against the floor of wherever he was and began to take the remaining weight of his vanishing body. He could feel his ears turn inward and slip into the gaping maw, a pace quickening as he thought to lie down. His breaths became slower, yet more real and sure. That was the only sound now, though there was a strange rhythmic beating somewhere behind the solemn sound.

His body did not feel heavy. It felt light. So light that it could take the first breeze which came along and carry him off so pleasantly. So elegant and serene would the journey be into slumber. He could see one thing in the illusion of mind.

Pal.

His great curled beard covered in fish oil. His weathered face scowling and softening. Hands on his wide hips, his great girth of belly bouncing as a chuckle grated across Pulren's sanity.

"Give up, shrimpbait. that's it. Go to sleepytown with me and your pathetic parents. the last thing you should ever do is actually TRY to live..."

Pulren felt something like anger, though it was muted in the slow wash of tide that brought him to tears of exhaustion. He wouldn't give up. He couldn't give up. His life was just beginning and he would not release his tentative grip on it. A jarring jolt shook the room that he was in and he immediately felt something happen to his face. The losing of it had mostly ceased and slowed. His conscious thoughts had brought him back. Now, he would have to force his body back by his own will. That, or oblivion.

A Stroll Down East Street

Postby Aoren on June 26th, 2014, 8:28 pm

Aoren had never been faced with the kind of power that the madman wielded. It was something he was aware was magical but he did not understand it. Those around him seemed to though. He wondered briefly if they dealt with this kind of danger on a daily basis. Several things happened faster than Aoren could properly respond to. The old man opened up the portal to absolute darkness at a rapid pace. The vestiges of Aoren’s res were pulled into the shadows of that black emptiness. The big man Aoren had healed charged him and within seconds there were two unconscious men in front of him and one missing a finger.

The Drykas man felt a strong, nearly overwhelming desire to soothe, comfort, and mend. It stemmed from the blessed mark that shone brightly on the right side of his face. Immediately he went to the nearest victim. The young man who had been under the influence of the crazed wizard. Kneeling Aoren gently, wordlessly rolled the young man onto his back. He placed two fingers at the base of the man’s jaw feeling toward the rear checking for a pulse. It was slight but it was there. He could tell that whatever the mage had done to him, it had drained him near the point of death. Laying a hand upon the young man’s brow as well as the center of his chest directly over his heart, Aoren closed his eyes calling upon the divine gift of Rak’keli.

Goddess grant me the strength to preserve this man’s life. Instill in me your grace and light that it may pass to him. Live, brother. Live to see another day.

It was a heartfelt prayer sent to his benevolent goddess. On the hierarchy of Rak’keli’s followers Aoren doubted he was very high upon her list who could call upon her direct attention but he had faith she heard him on some level. As he finished the prayer the mark upon his face shined brightly illuminating with a soothing azure light. As it did he felt the peace and clarity granted him by that sacred connection to his goddess pass from his body into the unconscious young man’s. Aoren kept his hands upon the young man until the light from his gnosis mark faded. When he withdrew his hands he felt the toll of calling upon his gift on his body.

That did not deter him. Giving the young man one last check over glancing for any possible deeper injuries, Aoren spotted none. His powers as a Healer were not infallible. He was a fledgling faced with something more suited to a practiced physician or more blessed Healer. Nevertheless he would not shirk his duty. Rising from the young man’s side he strode over to the man who he had first healed upon arriving to the scene.

Give me your hand. I cannot restore your finger but I can at least stem the bleeding and purify it to ward against infection.” Not waiting for any sort of response he reached out taking a firm hold of the injured limb. The emergence of his gift was immediate. The healing light once again passed from his body and into the body of the wounded man. The pain in his limb would dim. The threat of any sort of infection was eradicated and the bleeding that followed a clean sever would be stemmed. At least for the time being.

Put pressure on your injury.” He gave the man a sad smile before moving on to the final victim in the trio of injured. His mark still nudged him to bestow upon this man the blessings of Rak’keli. In that regard Aoren found himself slightly conflicted. As he stared at the crazed madman who had tried to kill them all simply for the act of it he considered the oath he’d made to his Goddess. With a sigh he nodded. In the trial against the raiders who he faced that resulted in Rak’keli granting her powers to him, they too had been on the opposing side of what Aoren believed in. Was this man any different? If he were a good man or a wicked soul consumed with want of power, his fate was not for Aoren to decide. For as he’d spoken to the Goddess…

The power to Heal is beyond good and evil.

With that he knelt down placing a hand upon the withered old man’s brow. As with the others the powers gifted to him by the Goddess of Healing washed over his unconscious form. The fact that it did so without hesitation, without bias, only reaffirmed the truth that no matter how wicked, how mad, or how pure the powers of a Healer were there for all. To Heal without bias, it was a challenge that Aoren did not doubt would plague him the whole of his life. When he’d finished healing the old man he quickly stepped away from him. He had no desire to meet the same fate as the unconscious young man who’d helped him earlier.
Aoren took a hold of his quarterstaff finding that he was in need of its support. His dog, Isikai, padded up next to him seating himself next to the Drykas. Aoren glanced around at the others.

Is anyone else in need of help?

The attempt at tackling this man was more or less instinctive rather than planned, therefore when Ricky was midway through the action and found himself no longer able to stop, he practically knew he was bound to regret it one way or another in the end. When he overwhelmed the spacial distortion that turned out to be a portal to the void, he could literally feel the air around it disperse as the incredible pull found itself no longer compatible to hold form. He'd gotten lucky, any later then sure enough it would've grown larger, in turn ripping the man in half were he so inclined to foolishly charge ahead then. He would've, there was no doubt about it. There were far too many innocents here to not risk it, and the fact a squad member alone was already thrown into risk... that already set the call for above and beyond motivation.

Sure enough the portal no longer held form but something happened, something that for a split tick felt weird around Ricky. In just a moments notice the force that collapsed managed to swarm around him but when it was gone, the center of the force itself seemed to have caught hold over him. Not particularly him but something that belonged to him in general, a limb that he once felt which all of a sudden went numb in the split tick that everything had occurred. There was no pain, not a single sign of it existed but the last digit on his left hand had gone completely numb. He couldn't feel it at all, only a powerful tingly sensation at the base where the whole knuckle resided. That didn't matter though, as the guard had already rammed himself hard into the bastard that harmed Pulren. He was a bloody lightweight too but given the fact he was an old coot, it was to be expected that he'd at least cover a little distance from the force of momentum in Ricky's tackle. The fisherman fell forward on the ground and took a moment to regain his lost equilibrium, and then finally proceeded to push himself up with his hands.

Only when he did this his eyes had been over to his left to keep an eye for Pulren, and once he'd caught sight of what he could no longer feel panic then struck his mind. His left hand was bleeding.... and missing a finger. The last finger that would be the pinky, it was petching gone. "What de petch..." Ricky wheezed for a moment as he still had a bit of breath to regain, he scrunched his eyes tightly as he would hold his hand before him, hopeful that when they would open again he would only be imagining things. That was obviously denial. His pinky was still gone, cleanly cut off by whatever the hell that portal was, and all that remained was a bleeding stump that suddenly seemed to radiate with needle like pings. His brows furrowed as his shock overlooked the pain, as he would turn over and lean up to scour the ground to find where his lost pinky went. "Where is me mot'er petchin finger?! Where?!" Not a single sign of his pinky was to be found, it had been swallowed whole into the abyss of the Void that had been opened. "What de mot'er petchin' shyke did 'e do t' me finger?!"

He was obviously in a state of shock at what he'd lost, sure it could've been worse but Ricky has never once managed to lose a limb. Therefore even if it were just a finger, it was still something he couldn't simply avoid making a big deal about. At this point Aoren had already managed to heal what he could of Pulren and checked him for further injuries. When he came help out Ricky once again he didn't waste time and effort in healing the wound, Ricky could only watch in awe as he felt the pinpricks of pain melt away. Now all he had to do apparently was keep pressure on it for a while, something Ricky did unknowingly as he looked over to Pulren once more. "Pul lad! Are yew aight?" He was hopeful that there would be an answer but he didn't know if the young guardsman was capable of doing so, the amount of time in contact with the leecher likely lethal if not fatal. Ricky then noticed the same soft glow of the healing light that emanated from Aoren's palms, as he was healing the old codger as well. "Yew mad? Healin' de bastard won't do us any good, last t'in we need is 'im gettin' back up an' castin' more magic at us!"

Of course the remark was paid little mind, as Aoren seemed to finish the task. There was a bit of tension in Ricky then as he nervously watched the unconscious mage on the ground, a little bit of spite directed towards him in turn for the sudden loss of a limb. "Everybody else is aight roi? Now would be a good time t' go t' yer 'omes an' lock de doors fer de eve." He added after Aoren asked to see if the others needed medical attention, though Ricky himself had a bit of a mess to clean up now that they had apprehended one of the insane escapee's from the asylum.

A Stroll Down East Street

Postby Lani Stranger on July 6th, 2014, 1:56 am

It was still an utter mystery to Lani how the blonde did all that he did. But as he stooped to take care of the unconscious man in her arms, she slid out of the way wordlessly. Leaning forward once more, she watched as the man worked. It looked so simply and yet it seemed so impossible. It wasn't until he finished speaking that Lani gasped. The strange tattoo that decorated his face began to glow and Lani was able to put two and two together. It's a gnosis gift. Lani had heard of them, those who were favored by the God's and granted with a unique magic. Obviously the blond man was able to heal just about anything, although what God gave the gift to him, Lani didn't know.

It was without a word that he stood and turned away again. Simple. Immediately Lani's black eyes followed him, speechless by what had just happened. The entire night so far had left her speechless. Who knew how much trouble a wrong turn would get you in? Lani did. And she wanted nothing of it. But her attention was turned quickly back to the man in front of her as he woke up. Lani fell back onto her heels before raising herself to a standing position. She didn't know exactly what would happen when he woke up. Lani half-expected him to start glowing, or maybe he would come out fighting. I'd be pissed if someone knocked me out with one touch. Lani reasoned for herself, leaning her hands on her knees to peer down at the man. Wavy blond hari cascaded down to frame her face. Lani swooped one curtain of hair out of her vision, she was watching him carefully, suspicious of what the blond had actually done to him.

"You okay?" Lani crouched so that she wouldn't be towering over the green eyed human as he came to his senses. Her actual concern over his well-being was very little, the other human had taken care of him, but she needed a reason to stay. Again, Lani thought it was the perfect time to simply slip away, but it became very clear to her that she didn't want to be alone that night ... maybe she would stick around for a few more chimes ...

...get up...

Get up.

Get Up!

Wherever Pulren was, he had to rise from this sinking slumber. With no dimensions to focus on, it seemed that every direction was wrong and confusing, but he still had to try. He had to. Something fluttered by Pulren's face. The distinct sensation suggested fluttering as feathery ticklings brushed against his cheek. A trace of blue light passed by his vision. After so much darkness and cold, the blue was the most vibrant light Pulren had ever seen.

He had a direction to move in, his perspective locked on to the swaying and spiraling colors. His breathing and his heartbeat began to quicken with the fluttering blue, his feet solid on the shifting landscape. One step at a time as Pulren staggered after the shape, its form morphing into ...a butterfly? Yes, a brilliant blue butterfly that was leading him out of the cold darkness. He could feel warmth trickling through his veins, a slight shiver caressing him and reminding him of that dark womb that he never wanted to return to.

The butterfly seemed to rise and the perspective shifted. Darkness and running became blue light and swimming. Pulren could feel the water around him, though there was no air pressing against his lungs. He couldn't be bothered, however, his full focus on the shimmering lights and the ascending butterfly. The surface was coming closer and closer, his arms and legs pushing and pulling until the water burst open and....

His eyes opened. He could hear his breaths, shallow and rapid. Where light was, now the darkness of the night sky remained, stars twinkling. Above, he could see the long blonde tresses of a beauty, though her eyes were missing. His head felt like that giant ape had stomped on it several times, the backwater bile of kelp beer stinking in his mouth. Never again would Pulren drink the stuff. Look where it had taken him.

A Stroll Down East Street

Postby Aoren on July 7th, 2014, 9:52 pm

Aoren was relieved to see that the unconscious young man managed to open his eyes. He still looked groggy and wholeheartedly drained but otherwise it seemed as if he would live. The others were collecting their wits. Aoren couldn’t blame them. Though the efforts of the mad mage had been thwarted it didn’t erase the fact that they had all very nearly died that night. To what powers, Aoren did not know. It was a subject he would have to investigate at the University. For the moment though, it seemed his work was concluded. Those injuries he could heal, he had. The tall wounded man with the missing finger looked as if he was pulling himself together.

The light haired woman with the impossibly dark eyes was being attentive to the young man who had brushed close to death. Everything seemed to be in order but no doubt this group would need some assistance of the law enforcement variety. Quietly he stepped close to the man with the missing finger. Laying a hand on his shoulder he gave it a gentle squeeze.

I am going to go see if I can find some help. There have to be some city guards nearby somewhere.” Aoren did not yet know much about Zeltiva but he had been acquainted with a Wave Guard or two upon first entering the city. Their uniforms were fairly distinctive. He’d seen some on patrol on his way toward this part of town. No doubt there were still some nearby. Giving the group of strangers a slight bow he moved to leave. Patting the side of his thigh he motioned for his canine companion to follow along beside him. The large black dog quirked his head at the others before accompanying Aoren in search of Guardsmen to help.

oocSo unfortunately we'll just assume Grash's character left early, probably out of shock or something since the situation was pretty... yeah. At any rate Aoren's got the right idea, I think we should make this last round our last. So this will be my last post for the thread, it's been a fun ride tackling old people with you fine folk!

With a bit of relief in seeing that his squad member finally stirred, he could solely focus on handling the damned old codger that remained unconscious. Luckily there wasn't a long wait to handle the clean up, seeing as how he wasn't even on duty to begin with. After Aoren had departed saying he was going to find a few extra Wave Guards to help with them, several guardsmen in turn found their ways down to the location of the group to lend what assistance they could. Ricky was sure to explain everything that happened, from the moment he got jumped to the split tick decision in tackling the leecher who opened that powerful warp in space. Sure enough he was commended for a very rash but very brave decision, given the fact he practically suffered enough injuries for one night.

By the looks of it though the only drastic loss was a mutilation of the finger, and not a single trace of it seemed present in the alleyway either. Therefore he could only assume it was swallowed in that spacial rend, when the gap managed to close itself after collapsing from the huge amount of matter that overwhelmed it. Very rash of him indeed. Yet Ricky hadn't the time to think, he only had the time to act. A moment later and he would've surely lost more than just a simple pinky, something he could very well live without seeing as how he was right handed anyway. His main concern was Pulren now, and seeing as how he looked to be better than earlier, the fisherman found only slight relief in knowing his companion was safe. That was twice now. Twice that he had seen a comrade face near death, the same comrade that in fact helped him take on mages earlier in fact. Just what the hell was he suppose to do? How in Zeltiva was he suppose to be an efficient leader if he couldn't keep his squad members safe? He had a lot to make up for it seems, something he would have to do after he made a complete recovery from this.

"Pulren lad, escort de yung lass 'ere 'ome would ya. De ot'er guards 're gonna take in dis man a' lock 'im up where 'e belongs, Oi'm gonna 'ead 'ome me self an'..." He looked at the wound once more with a slight grimace, the pressure kept on his hand light but firm to keep from another bleeding. "Figure out a way t' explain dis t' me wife." He couldn't help it but there was a chuckle. A chuckle that turned into a laugh, which in turn took a couple of chimes to settle down finally. What was so damn funny? He wish he knew, but apparently the fact he lost a finger tonight somehow amused him. Was it shock? Probably. Of course he didn't know nor did he dwell on it, he wanted to just leave and be rid of this place. Be rid of the memory before something else came to turn it into yet another nightmare. "Oi'll see yew at the Head Quarters later." The fisherman would finally managed to say, though that was the farthest from the truth.

For reasons unknown Ricky just couldn't find it in himself to face Pulren again so soon, at least not until he came to terms with the fact he could do better and make it up to the young man. Somehow he would find a way to do just that, and in turn improve his own skills to better avoid nights like this in the future.

Ricky was gone now, he'd left the two to their own devices. All he could do was walk on towards home until the building arrived, and even then when he was once inside he found himself able to tell the most bizarre story of the evening.

A Stroll Down East Street

Pulren could hear the Sergeant's words clearly, but their intent could not have escaped him more clearly. There was little to no chance that he would be escorting the young lady home, regardless of her ability to defend herself. He was barely alive, for petch's sake! He halfheartedly hoped someone would escort him home instead, but he knew better. Pal would be spitting on him from fishmonger oblivion if he didn't keep getting up and finishing the night he had so brazenly started.

His body was even more stubborn. He could hear the footsteps of the other Guardsmen as they filled the previously barren streets, clearing the predators that might come and scavenge Pulren for whatever was left of his life. Sliding on to his side, the steady pulse of pain in his temple opened his eyes with shock before he made it to lying on his face. Some hand gripped him beneath his shoulder, though he couldn't tell who had done it. He nodded a thank you and waved somewhat, though that hand groggily reached out and pressed against the cool walls of the buildings. His forehead found that coolness as well and it gave him a moment to try and shake the cobwebs loose, though shaking his head would not be a part of that plan.

He stretched his ankles and legs slowly, finding their strength so that he could make an attempt to go back to headquarters. It seemed like it was so far away. He thought he might never make it until sunrise, the thought of such an event funny to Pulren somehow. Pushing against the wall, he worked for some time to keep his balance, as the kelp sickness was strong, stronger than ever, filling him with faceless nightmares. He looked forward to sleeping again and finding better vistas. More hands helped him, moving him along the streets as he simply drooled and nodded, sometimes in response ot things and sometimes not.

Whether it was the eyeless blonde or his fellow Guards, Pulren would never know. All he knew was that when the bunk came, oblivion returned. That oblivion, however, was restful and welcome.
