A Second Meeting[L'orlei]

Postby Clyde Sullins on August 9th, 2013, 11:52 pm

Clyde watched as L'orlei prepared herself to exude res. It was clear to his trained eyes that she was deeply concentrating, feeling away inside of herself for her djed, to twist it, to change it, and exude it in the only way physically possible, as res.

He just stood there and watched. Her first time inevitably would be the hardest. But once she had done it, she would have a vague idea or notion of the route to take, and the next trip would be a bit easier... And easier... And so on, until it was as simple as breathing.

But that was a long way away.

Clyde felt a slight "tingle" of sorts run over his skin, a moment before the res came out. When it did, it was disorderly, uncontrolled, chaotic, but still res all the same. Green. He had not seen that color before.

"Not bad, not for your first time, and you will get more fluid in its creation and expulsion as you practice. Now, for next time, I want you to try something. Focus the areas of your body from which is exits. The palms of the hands are good, and I find exhaling it on your breath is also good. But when you are using it, having it come out a bit more predictably, is better. So try to exude it more concisely next time."

Clyde paused for a moment, giving the konti a moment to respond, before continuing on.

"Now next, I want you to try and control it. Will the res to shape and move. I find a ball is the simplest of shapes to take on, edges are more or less impossible with a gas... But a sphere or ball, that is simplest of all."

Clyde returned his attention to the different elements he had brought in. Now they needed to figure out which element L'orlei had access to.

"Once you have it as a ball, I want you to guide it over to those elements I brought in, water, earth, flame, air. Bring your res over each of them in turn, and then call out to them, through your res. That is the best way I can explain it. Transmuting, turning res into an element, is easy to do, but attraction, it requires a secondary manipulation upon the res, which constantly calls for your attention and concentration. So feel out with your res, find what feels right, and pull at it, will the res to pull the material to it... And when you have found the right one, it will be called to it like a mother hearing its baby cry."

A Second Meeting[L'orlei]

Postby L'orlei on August 23rd, 2013, 8:54 pm

L'orlei listened to everything Clyde had to say, finding that she was indeed able to pay attention to him as well as her res without losing control altogether. She did not know what would happen if she stopped paying attention completely. Would her res fade away, lost forever? Would it return to her? Would it randomly transmute and burn down her home? Hopefully if it did randomly transmute her element was not fire. L'orlei did not want to wield fire.. not yet, anyway.

"Okay.. a ball. I can do that."

L'orlei narrowed her eyes, staring at the strange mist in front of her. She tried to will it into a shape, glaring at it and telling it to move with her mind, wanting it to become a ball.. but nothing happened. At least, nothing that she could see happened. In truth the res did move, but only slightly.

"Petch.. this is hard. Okay.. ball. Become a ball."

Her res moved a little more when she began to speak to it, but still not enough to hold any sort of shape. Without really thinking about it, L'orlei repeated the word ball and cupped her hands together, forming a circle. The res moved, a lot, and started to swirl. L'orlei yipped excitedly, glancing at Clyde before her cheeks flushed with embarrassment. Quickly she returned her attention to the res and tried again.

"Ball."

She cupped her hands together again, and the rest continued to swirl in a circular motion, but a lot of it was still floating freely. L'orlei frowned, and made a motion as if she was pushing the res on the outer edges toward the center. The res began to respond. L'orlei let out a tired breath, the concentration beginning to wear on her. She continued to move her hands, mostly causing the res to swirl around in circles, but eventually she began to get it under control. It started to form a ball. The entire process took longer than she would have liked, but eventually she had a small sphere. Much of her res had decayed by then, and the sphere was half the size it would have been if she had formed the ball quicker. She glanced at the elements on the table, but decided to go for what she considered the easiest one first, because it was all around them.

"Air."

She spoke it, she thought it, but nothing happened. And then it occurred to L'orlei that she was thinking the wrong thing. She was simply thinking air, but was not calling the air to her. Just thinking air would more likely turn the res into air, and that wasn't what she was trying to do.

"Pull in air."

She spoke the words, but it was her mind that was really calling out to the res, yearning for it to come towards the ball. Nothing happened.. but maybe the air was invisible? She glanced at Clyde, but he did not show any sign she had done things right. Focusing again, still nothing happened.

"Hmm.. well, maybe not air then. Earth," she said, willing the ball of res and pushing it with her hands toward the earth as she spoke.

Still nothing happened. No earth came soaring towards the ball. It did not even wiggle. L'orlei frowned again, glancing at the other two elements. Water, and fire. She really did not want it to be fire. She really did not want to burn her house down. Motioning with her hand again, L'orlei guided the res over to the water. It had almost all died by then, but hopefully water would be her element and she wouldn't have to produce more res.

"Water. Laviku, please let it be water."

L'orlei called to the water, and once again, nothing happened. She called again, and still nothing. Her eyes darted over to the fire, but L'orlei shook her head. No, it had to be water. She took a deep breath, clearing all else but water from her mind. It had to be water. She wanted it to be water. She called out to the water.. and it began to ripple. L'orlei's eyes widened in surprise, and she called harder, verbally as well.

"Water, come!"

It took every ounce of focus she had, but slowly and surely drops began to rise from the water and float towards the small bit of res she had left. It was barely a teaspoon worth of res, hardly enough to control or attract much water, but she had done it. She had called the water.

"I did it!"

She lost control, and the water splashed back down. What was left of her res was gone, expended by its use and its natural decay. L'orlei stared at the small mess she had made, but shrugged it off.

"Oops.. but.. I did it!"

A Second Meeting[L'orlei]

Postby Clyde Sullins on August 23rd, 2013, 9:14 pm

Clyde watched as the Konti attempted to do as he had instructed, to shift the res into a ball shape. He saw a small almost imperceptible judder, more noticeable for the fact of motion than that it had changed its shape. Though even motion itself was hard to pick out, when dealing with a gas which was almost constantly a small bit in motion. Which made subtle motions of res all the harder to detect.

When she finally managed it, she let out a small exclamation, and turned red. Though Clyde was not sure why, she was figuring it out at a decent enough rate, considering she was under his tutelage. It likely would have taken longer to grasp the multiple facets of the magic. And even longer to become fluent in its usages, and in thinking of creative ways to use the same elements in original ways. Or even ones simply specially designed for a particular scenario. That would take years of practice, and even Clyde had not perfected that aspect of his craft. It was more of a constantly ongoing quest for any Reimancer.

Once she was satisfied with her sphere, she continued on to the next thing he had said, to attempt to figure out her element. He could not understand much of the words that she said, but he recognized a incantation when he saw one. But there was little to do really, until she found her element. All he could do was stand and watch, waiting for the subtle motion that would denote the attraction. Or not so subtle, depending upon how she did it, and what her element was.

He watched until he saw a ripple in the water, and then droplets flying upward out of the mass of water to cling to her res, a steady stream of drops being sucked up and onto it, till... She got to excited, and lost concentration, and it all fell.

"Good, so now you know your element is water. Your only element, at least until you become much more skilled. For now, why don't you try to exude a bit more res, out of your hands, and then collect a layer of water around your ball. Try to float it around in the air in a circular motion before you, concentrating on your res and on holding and pulling the water to the res, attracting it at it to its surface. Perhaps test out which is more comfortable for you, gestures or incantations."

Clyde would leave her to it, waiting a few chimes until she was deeply focused on her task. Then he would hold one hand behind his back, and exude out a small ball of gaseous res, as easily as another person exhaled. He pictured a sphere as he watched L'orlei, not even directly looking at his res. Why did he need to after all, it was a part of him, it was him. He knew were it was as instinctively as he knew were his left foot was.

Holding his palm out flat, he would make a "come" gesture with his index finger, sending the small ball of res hurtling upward behind his back, to stop over his head. Then with a poking motion with the same finger, sent it flying at the Konti.

As it left him, he would say "Catch!", and then transmute the ball of res into water, launching it right at her head.

A Second Meeting[L'orlei]

Postby L'orlei on August 23rd, 2013, 10:33 pm

"Out of my hands. Got it."

L'orlei closed her eyes again, trying to find that place she had found before, deep within her. Or perhaps it wasn't deep within her, and ran throughout her entire body? Really, she had no idea. She knew it was in there somewhere.

Come on, L'orlei. Do it better this time.

She did not pray this time. If her prayers had been answered before, she doubted the gods would prevent her a second time, and they surely had better things to do than constantly be called to help her with her magic. Instead, L'orlei focused on her hands, and on the res that she knew was in there somewhere. She took a deep breath, exhaling slowly and lifted her hands up in font of her, palms open and facing each other. She imagined the res coming out of her hands, this time as a liquid. Water was her element, and she figured it would be easier to attract it as a liquid than as something it was not.

Slowly the res began to come out, L'orlei biting her lip as she concentrated harder. It was tiring, but that was just the way magic was. She pushed it out of her as fast as she could.. which was at a snails pace. If she were in a fight, a place she hoped to never actually find herself, there was no way she could use her magic to defend herself. Not at that speed, anyway.

L'orlei opened her eyes when she was done, and the res was floating around in little liquid globs between her hands. She would have to figure out how to shape it as it was coming out, but that would be an experiment for another day. Concentrating again, her eyes staring down the res like it would make a difference, she began to cup her hands and move them around, pushing the res together until it shaped a ball.

The next step was to attract the water. L'orlei made a pushing motion with her hand, slowly moving the ball over the bowl, and started to imagine the water flowing towards it once more. She started to bite her lip again when nothing happened, but stopped when she opened her mouth to speak again.

"Water, come."

The water began to ripple again, but it wasn't coming enough. Her words weren't strong enough.. but then she remembered what Clyde had said. Perhaps she was more comfortable with the gestures? L'orlei pointed at the water and made a pulling motion, imagining the water moving towards her ball. A few drops floated up, but it was hardly enough to cover the little orb. She made the gesture again, more forcefully, and more of the water came.

L'orlei was quite focused on her task. She had enough water to coat the ball, she wasn't paying attention to Clyde at all. Droplets of water fell from the ball when she made a pushing motion with her hand, pushing the orb up to eye level, and L'orlei quickly refocused on attracting the water, making a motion as if she were catching it with her hands and pushing it back up. Gestures were definitely more natural to her. When she created a shield she molded it like clay, unlike many who preferred to pain or smear it over whatever they were trying to protect. With reimancy it was much the same. She was manipulating the res and water to do what she wanted using her hands, not just willing it or painting a picture with it. L'orlei let the orb sink towards the table, still paying no attention to what Clyde was doing. When he shouted catch she was caught so off guard that she not only lost control of her own ball of water, she took Clydes right in the face.

A Second Meeting[L'orlei]

Postby Clyde Sullins on May 21st, 2014, 2:14 pm

As was expected of a novice attempting a spell, it took all of her attention to manage. The konti Reimancer was attempting attraction, which also meant a larger drain on her focus than simply moving about res or even transmuting it. However realistically speaking, there would always be reactions in anything but a lab setting, and so it was Clyde's job to prepare her for that.

Throwing a ball of water at her and expecting her to catch it with res would have been tricky if she'd known it was going to happen. With her being caught off guard, the chance of her success was unlikely. But then, Clyde knew that.

It was all to simulate the various pulls on ones concentration when using Reimancy, the distractions, and the vulnerability the happened when one utterly focused on a magic.

Clyde was not dissapointed as L'orlei both lost control of her own orb of water, and had Clyde's splash her directly in the face, sending droplets all over in every which way.

He grinned back at the Konti, and then let out a cough before continuing.

“Now, I hope you just realized a few things. One, when doing a difficult Reimancy spell for your skill, it takes most if not all of your concentration and focus. Gestures seem to be your thing, as are mine, and they will aid you in focusing on that one task. But, focusing on one task to the exclusion of all else means you are vulnerable.”

“Until you become much more skilled, it would be foolhardy for you to attempt Reimancy in anything but lab settings. It would leave you far to open and vulnerable. However at some point you must also practice in real settings out of the most comfortable and easy. In real settings there will be distractions, things that pull away your concentration and break your focus. There will be multiple threats and things you need to focus on. You must learn to ignore these distractions so that you can focus on your magic. But you must also learn when to focus, and when doing so makes you vulnerable. You must find a balance, and learn when giving up your focus to attempt a spell will put you in more danger than simply not doing anything or defending yourself.”

Gesturing at the water before them which was splashed across the ground from the various water spells, along with the water that had soaked L'orlei, Clyde continued.

“Now, you know attraction, you can do it. Now simply pull this water as you did the other. For starters, why don't you use it to dry yourself off, and then you can turn it to drying up the floor. Drying things out by pulling the water out of them is a very simple application of Reimancy, and something you can practice at your current skill. I believe you saw me do it the other day.”

A Second Meeting[L'orlei]

Postby L'orlei on July 4th, 2014, 1:21 pm

Simple? Nothing was simple about what Clyde was asking her to do. She understood why he splashed her in the face, she understood his explanation and did not mull over it very long. She wasn't offended, she understood all that. But drying everything off? Now that was going to be a challenge. It would require making res, moving it around, attracting, moving it more.. sounded pretty difficult. L'orlei thought about it hard, wondering if there was another way she could do it.

L'orlei noticed that some of her res still remained, she had not lost it all due to Clyde's distraction. That was a good thing. The Konti wasn't sure how much res she could produce, and did not want to waste it all. Closing her eyes, she took a calming breath, and began again. It was a little easier that time. She knew what to do, had done it a couple of times, and though she was beginning to get tired, she was becoming a bit more familiar with the process. That did not really make her any faster, however, it just made the steps easier to figure out. The res still trickled out of her at a snails pace, floating up from the palms of her hands to join with the res that remained. When L'orlei had what she judged was enough she stopped, opening her eyes. The blob of res was floating in front of her, awaiting her command.

L'orlei ran over the process in her mind. She needed to pull the water off of herself, then move the res over to the next puddle and pull that up, then to the next, and clean it up as well. That seemed rather complicated, and so the thought that had been forming in the back of her mind was settled. She was going to try something a bit different, more efficient. She was certain it was an excellent idea.

L'orlei gestured all around her, at the water on the floor, and at herself. She concentrated really hard, a serious look coming over her face. She stared determined at the res, then with a final sweeping motion, she figuratively shoved all the water in the room at the ball of res.

At first nothing happened, but L'orlei concentrated hard, and made the shoving motion again. She could feel her heart beating rapidly at the strain of what she was trying to do. She shoved again, and this time the water began to move. Not just the water on her clothes, but the water on the floor as well, and the water on the table, and the water that was slowly making its way toward the front door. Little droplets began to float toward the orb, and L'orlei shoved again.

At first she was thrilled. It was working, and she knew Clyde would be impressed. All the water in the room was starting to slowly fly toward the orb, and L'orlei couldn't believe it was working so well. Her heart was racing, and she shoved again, the water attracting more quickly. She was dry, for the most part, and most of the water was off the floor. L'orlei began to breath heavily, suddenly feeling exhausted, and it was all she could do to keep the water hovering there in front of her. She didn't know it, but she had done too much. She was nearing her limits, but it did not disrupt her elation.

"I did it! I didn't think I could, but I did it!"

Her eyes darted to Clyde, hoping to see them impressed. L'orlei was certainly impressed with herself, even if she was exhausted and had nearly overgiven. She did not know much about overgiving though, and had no idea how close she was to it. In her other magics overgiving was much less of a concern, and she had little practice in not overdoing it.

OOCSorry for taking so long on this. I moved about a month ago, and only just got internet back. My posting should be somewhat regular now.

A Second Meeting[L'orlei]

Postby Clyde Sullins on July 12th, 2014, 9:34 pm

While Clyde's instructions might not seem as such, his orders and instructions were usually very specific, taking in mind the persons current ability and skill level, and asking them to do what they could currently handle. He knew if they went to far beyond their abilities bad things could happen, things like overgiving.

It was one of the reasons Clyde usually reacted so angrily when people did not explicitly follow his order in regards to magic. Part of this was his personality, but a better part of it was safety concerns of what might happen should they not obey.

Everything seemed to be going as planned, as he had ordered, up until she actually began attraction.

All of the water in the room was shifted and pulled, the water on the floor, on the konti, all of it in one sweep.

When L'orlei finished he frowned back at her, shaking his head.

"I did it! I didn't think I could, but I did it!"

“I said to do it in sections, not all at once! Do you want to kill yourself on your first proper day? ”

Clyde let out a huff of air, glaring at the Konti.

“Clearly we need to have another talk about overgiving, and about taking your magic in measures, and not trying too much at once. Clearly you cannot handle this power well if even when of clear of mind you choose to push too far, even before overgiving sets in and makes it almost impossible to stop yourself. Reimancy is not like shielding, nor glyphing. The latter costs no djed, and the former is self limiting. Reimancy is not like that. The more you do, the more it costs. Every time you use it you are casting aside and killing a chunk of yourself, as surely as you would be if you took a knife and hacked off a limb. And yet you waste it on big showy spells beyond your ken. I have had this talk before with you, but clearly you were not listening then.”

Clyde stared at L'orlei, a serious expression no his face.

“If you will not respect my orders, will not respect the magic I have given you, then perhaps you are not worthy to keep it. I don't want a dead djed starved husk as a student, which is what you will be if you do not listen. Either you will control your magic, or it will control you. You need to choose that now, and commit to pacing yourself, or else you will die quick and bloody.”

A Second Meeting[L'orlei]

Postby L'orlei on July 18th, 2014, 10:06 am

L'orlei was crestfallen. As soon as Clyde started berating her all the pride and excitement went out of her face, and her eyes cast downward. She had thought he would be impressed with what she had done, but she was very, very wrong. Clyde was not impressed at all, he was angry. Not worthy to keep it? Could he take away what he had given her? The idea frightened her, and she did not want it to happen.

"I.. I'm sorry," the Konti replied meekly. "I thought you would be impressed, I was trying to be more efficient, I was.."

She sighed, glancing at the ball of water. It had been more efficient, she knew. Much quicker than if she had taken the time to move the ball around, but then she supposed that was not the point. Moving it around and taking the water in sections would have taught her to control and move the res, and that was the entire point. She saw that now.

"I am sorry I disobeyed you. I don't want to die, and I do think I am worthy to keep what you have given me. I will do as you say, from now on."

A Second Meeting[L'orlei]

Postby Clyde Sullins on July 25th, 2014, 3:20 am

It was clear from her reaction that the Konti was less than happy with his response, withdrawing somewhat and lowering her gaze. Perhaps that meant she was listening, and some section of it had sunken through, Clyde thought to himself.

Clearly she had been excited by her "Achievement" of her spell, but Clyde was not. He had left his words purposely a bit vague, hinting at ideas and things that might or might not be true. Such as the purposeful idea of her magic being taken away from her, of him taking back his Reimancy that he had gifted her with. In a way it was untrue, but then he had never said he could, simply that perhaps he should. Not technically a lie, but still misleading.

"I.. I'm sorry. I thought you would be impressed, I was trying to be more efficient, I was.."

"I am sorry I disobeyed you. I don't want to die, and I do think I am worthy to keep what you have given me. I will do as you say, from now on."

Clyde nodded, meeting her eyes, staring her down.

“If you wish to be a Reimancer, cast aside all ideas of impressive shows of magic. Being big and showy and flashy does not mean being good. Good is what is necessary, good is what it does with practicality in mind, and with being the most effective and efficient with what you have. Never make two when one will do. Never do all at once what you can do much more effectively over time or over an area. If this was life or death and you had to do it all at once that is one thing, but when you have time to do things properly you should always do so.”

Taking in a deep breath, Clyde closed his eyes, pondering over words and ideas. Pondering over orders, some to a degree arbitrary. But perhaps it would also mean keeping her alive, and her using her magic properly.

“First rule of djed, all Reimancy is a trade off. Either you will have a fast spell that you do not fully understand or control, which you release into the world, or you will have a well formed and precise spell that through planning and hard work becomes what you will it to. Either you have a powerful spell, or you have a spell you fully control. The more power you go for, the less control you will have. Slowly such boundaries will expand, your limits will expand, and what is now hard will become a pittance. But regardless that rule will hold that the more power you will then the less control you will have. It even still holds for me.”

“Second rule, res is precious, is a part of you, do not disrespect it or use it wastefully. Do not transmute unless you must, always use attraction if you can, always take back what is leftover that is not wasted. Only make what you need, and only use it for what you must. Take your time, and realize its cost.”

“Rule three, do not use a spell outside of training, or outside of lab settings, unless you have performed it thrice. Once is a fluke, you might have done it by chance or the random factors. Twice means you can perform it, can do it and implement it. Thrice means you truly understand it, and can call upon it even without thinking. By then the unique rhythms and sways of the spell should come naturally, and you should be able to do it in the exact form without deviation. Learn these base spells well, and then if you must in battle alter or deviate them to suit your needs. But never perform a spell in combat or when your life depends upon it unless you truly understand it, or at least what it is based on.”

“Rule four, rest, recuperate, and prepare. Perform a spell, and then take a few chimes to center yourself. Take a drink of water, eat a little, rest, and then perform another spell if you must. If you have time to stop and rest, do so, give yourself time to replenish, and to think over your prior casting. If it is a difficult enough casting, perhaps just end training for the day, and take it up another day. Before casting clear your mind and focus yourself, take some time to meditate, and when you do cast use a focus mechanism. Gestures, incantations, Glyphs, if possible both Glyphs and one of the focus mechanism. While in battle you cannot do all, you always have time to use focus mechanism such as gestures or incantations.”

“Rule five, control your magic, do not let it control you. Use Reimancy because you must, or to train, or for something nothing else can do. Never let it control you, never let it choose your actions or when you cast. Keep a cool head, and do not push yourself beyond your limits. Know when you need to stop, and do so.”

Letting out a sigh, Clyde looked at the Konti once more, and looked out of the room. Out onto the Konti isle, the open air, and the elements.

“If you follow those rules, you might just live long enough to become decent with the magic. So long as you respect your magic, are not wasteful, and keep in control of it.”

Pausing for a moment, Clyde let all he had said sink in, and then gazed back at the konti.

“Well... I suppose that's about it for the lesson... Did you have any last minute questions, or should we end it here?”

Clydes Stuff

I am actually in RL a super intelligent hamster from Rhode Island, with a 7 year plan to take over the world.

Update 6/2/18- 1:10AM EST: His 7 year plan a success, and several weeks ahead of schedule, Clyde leaves to oversee the world he has taken over.

No new threads after end of Spring 518-Will still be checking for PM's occasionally, but focusing on a new character.

Graders note: :
Please be aware Clyde is a master Magecrafter. He therefore should not be gaining full xp(or possibly shouldn't gain any at all) for simple tasks related to this magic, such as low level MC items, particularly for repetitions of creations he has done before. Feel free to contact me if unsure of a instance of his magic use compared to his skill level.

A Second Meeting[L'orlei]

Postby L'orlei on July 31st, 2014, 12:11 pm

L'orlei listened as Clyde reprimanded her. She understood what he was saying. Efficiency. Practicality. It all made sense, of course it did. It was just like in medicine. You did things in steps, making sure each step was done properly. Cleaning the wound, disinfecting it. Applying any healing balms, wrapping it, coming back the next day to do it all over again. You did not just bandage the wound and be done with it, not if you had time to perform all the steps. Just like with magic, the more time and thought you put into something, the more control you will have over the result.

The konti was disappointed in herself, knowing she had made a fool of herself. Whatever respect Clyde had for her, it was probably gone now. She was just another foolish youth, he probably thought, despite the fact that she was much older than him.

L'orlei remained silent as he listed off all of the rules. She committed them to memory as best she could, but all in all, she understood the gist of it. She did want to live, of course, and had every hope of becoming decent with magic. She had no desire to overgive and lose her mind like some of the Timandre mages she'd heard of in the past. Konti found it easy enough to lose their minds as it was, so many succumbing to the pressure of their gifts, and L'orlei was no about to let that happen.

She could not think of anything else to ask. She knew she would probably be full of questions the moment Clyde left, but for the life of her, none would come to mind. She was to focused on her making a fool of herself during the lesson to be able to think of any questions.

"No.. I can't think of any questions. You are a very good teacher, Clyde. Thank you for taking the time to help me, and not leaving me to discover this all on my own."

She paused, trying to think of anything else to say, trying to think of any other questions. She could think of none related to her lesson, but one question did come to mind.

"Where will you go after this? I know you are leaving the island soon, but where will you go, should I ever wish to find you?"
