There it was: that familiar twisting guilt the instant that words of common began to tumble from Khara's mouth. Here he was, in a room with three women he either respected or, at the very least, had compelling reasons to want to avoid unduly irritating; and here they were all forced to utilise a less than preferable language on account of him. It felt like a persistent grip tightening around his heart with every stumbled phrase that Khara managed to utter; he shouldn't have come, shouldn't have allowed himself to be here to inconvenience them all, shouldn't have allowed himself to be the cause of the discomfort that Khara was clearly feeling -

Khara's discomfort. That was like being lost in a blizzard, and suddenly catching sight of a wolf: all the other distractions slid into the background, and Zhol's mind sharpened it's focus on the worst of them, searching for a way to survive it. When her voice turned quiet like that, when her posture collapsed in on itself as if she were trying to shrink, when her eyes nervously darted about like that - those were all bad signs. Elsewhere, in private, he would try to steer her away from such things with heartfelt words; but such times had the advantage that Khara could, thankfully, not see how obvious his caring for her was, and would never notice the hidden meaning that those words conveyed. Drusilla and Azira would not be so oblivious, and the thought of either of them knowing was almost as terrifying as the prospect of Khara ever finding out.

Instead, he spoke in silent gestures, his hand brushing gently against Khara's for the briefest of instants, an unspoken reminder that he was there, and that her worries need not be. "I haven't," Zhol agreed, swooping in to aid Khara's efforts to deflect attention away from herself. "It's a good job I had such a talented game scout to show me the way, else I would have been hopelessly lost."

A grin came to his face, and he stepped forward, enthusiastically wrapping his arms around the birthday girl. "Hello again, sister," he muttered, with an affectionate squeeze. A slight twist came into his words. "You should have told me yesterday at the stables that today was your birthday," he added, the tiniest hint of teasing chastisement creeping into his voice. "How is a brother supposed to prepare for such things, if he doesn't find out until the evening before?"

Party for a Spider

Postby Azira on January 18th, 2015, 8:49 pm

The Symenestra looked simply overjoyed to see them, which made Azira feel a little uncomfortable as the greetings took place. An endearment, albeit a laughable one, was used for Khara and there was a greeting to Zhol in a tongue that was alien to the huntress. Each was met in such a personal manner and she knew that she was out of place here. It seemed like a mistake to have come at all. The way that Drusilla greeted her made it worse. The woman couldn't have made her feel more self-conscious if she'd tried.

She had no desire to hug the woman and even if she did, it was doubtful that it would make things any less awkward, probably only more so. The Avora was quick to shake hands with the other woman so that they could move things along as soon as possible. "Enda Drusilla," she mumbled bashfully. It didn't seem as if the other two took much notice, something of which she was glad. She didn't need them ogling her as she failed to share the same intimacy as they did. The use of the Symenestra honorific made her sound like a simple acquaintance, one that you wouldn't get excited over when they showed up out of the blue to your birthday celebrations.

Stepping into the Aerie, she looked around her in interest and surprise. She'd been here before but it had clearly been changed by Drusilla's presence. It seemed to have actual things in it now. Turrin had decorated it in a much more spartan manner so it wouldn't have taken much to add to it. She couldn't imagine what the other rooms would be like but she wasn't sure that she wanted to see them. She couldn't say that spider's additions were an improvement although they made the place seem more lived in. It was the only praise that she could apply to it as the decorations weren't quite to her taste.

An eyebrow was raised at the woman's Common, more out of surprise that that was the language to be conversed in rather than her accent although that was certainly... unique. A gaze was flicked Zhol's way as his deficiency with Nari was recalled, a fact that had quite quickly slipped her mind. She could manage Common.

"Love what you've done with the place, Drusilla," she remarked for the sake for politeness. She almost winced at the edge that the less familiar tongue had given her words. Sarcastic emphasis always seem to come much more naturally than it did in her native language, usually when she didn't want it to do so. At least in Nari she could have sounded more genuine than she really felt about the spider's interior decorating. Despite the brief discomfort when she began speaking, her accent didn't lead to as much self-awareness and anxiety that it seemed to do in Drusilla but she still knew that she had one. Her Common spoken syllables always sounded clipped, a chirp strangled and smothered before it could reach its full potential. The language somehow inherited the more negative aspects - impatience, sarcasm, irony, contempt - related to her personality and conveyed them in word and tone. People didn't tend to snigger at her Common though. There was a sense that to do so would lead to unpleasantness.

With some amusement she observed that Khara was also self-conscious of her use of the language. It wasn't her self-awareness that was amusing, she acted that way all the time, but rather the way she spoke it. Each sound chirped out at high speed brought on by nervousness rather than fluency, the cadence unnatural as she stumbled and tried to correct it before anyone noticed. She was sure that the girl had a fair grasp of the language but the nerves were making it sound as if she didn't. It was like the way she stuttered in Nari was she was pressured. The subject of conversation, a pie, was hardly listened to although she gathered that it was for Drusilla. The urge to laugh at the other girl in the face of Azira's own discomfort was growing stronger the more the scout chattered on. The huntress did her best not to show her inner mirth but she wasn't entirely confident that it was being kept completely under wraps, even by avoiding the gazes of the others.

She was saved any further struggle by Khara's speech being brought to a halt as attention was shoved onto the horse boy. She was still willing to laugh after Zhol's initial comment but the feeling died as the sensation of being out of place returned. The invitation had been extended to her as well and if she accepted it and included herself more then maybe that would make things less awkward. It was a slim hope but at least it was some semblance of one. She had to at least try.

"I know my way to the actual Aerie but that's about it. I'll take a tour and see what you've done elsewhere," she chimed in.

Party for a Spider

Drusilla smiled in almost an embarrassed way at Khara, "Thank you Chickadee. I can't believe you remembered all of that! Both about the cake and the peaches..." She lifted the pie from Khara's hands. "It shall taste just fine, just because you brought it for celebration. Once again, thank you Khara." Looking at the pie, she could see it was made with berries. What exact berries she couldn't tell, but it reminded her of the jams and treats she had eaten in Kalinor. It was a crusted jelly type thing, most certainly she could eat it with little to no side effects. "Yes, this crusted jelly treat should be perfectly edible for me."

She turned to Zhol and made a handsign (horse) to him. Drusilla moved the sign in a rocking motion. (horse moving; horse riding) Another sign by her head, (forget) she had been studying that book of Pavi intently and was determined to show it off to Zhol, "H-horse, Solo, friend. Brother's friend. Mind my slipped it, yes? I s-so-sorry am." She had butchered it she knew, and her smile curled into a look of silent laughter. "How bad was it, brother?" She goofingly pouted at him, "It's hard to remember such things when one is overcoming one's fear of the horses. I won't forget to tell you any things of importance from now, okay?"

Drusilla grinned at the fammilar tongue that Azira had somehow remembered. "Ah, Sibea-zira!" She gave a nodlike bow."Why thank you, Azira! I know you don't mean a work of it. But props for politeness!" She smiled. "You two speak common much...easier than I." It felt like she cooed her words and then suddenly snipped the word. Long drawn out but then cut short. She could only imagine what snuck into her Pavi. "You'd like to see this place too? Alright. First, the main hall as I have to put this pie somewhere." Drusilla could feel Azira's discomfort and was trying to think of some way to put her at ease.

"Azira could you get that door for me?" She asked politely, looking down to the pie in her hands and back at the Avora. Giving a smile she made her way through the door. "This is the main hall, all rooms connect to here."

Party for a Spider

It took the second hearing of Dru's chosen nickname for her to realize that it had actually been spoken, and that the others had heard it. A brief look was cast at Azira, to see if the expected amusement at such a thing was present but the Avora looked almost as uncomfortable as Khara felt. It was only the Symenestra's continued enthusiasm that kept the girl from fully retreating into herself. Well, that and the sudden gentle touch of Zhol's hand against hers. Oh gods, she realized suddenly. Drusilla knew. She had to what with the way Khara had practically burst into tears and the kind seamstress had told her to simply tell the boy how she felt. Khara hadn't exactly confirmed anything but there could be no mistaking that sort of thing. What if Dru said something, then? It wasn't just Zhol finding out that threatened to let the panic crash into her, but with Azira standing about as well? She wasn't quite sure why that terrified her so much but it did!

Thankfully as more greetings and - Did Dru just speak the horse-people language?? - other sentiments being spread about, Khara was fairly certain her sudden fear was only being reflected as her usual, practically consistent, state of nervousness. She refused to begin to think that this whole get together was a bad idea. Still, she was glad when the tour began in earnest.

Foolish as it felt, Khara couldn't stop the sudden intake of breath as they stepped into the main hall. Although supposedly only a glorified entryway it seemed to be quite as big as her entire room! Her eyes scanned the whole of it, from the beautiful intricate rug, to the set in seating area, to the - fire place? What Khara wouldn't have given to have had one of those in her room! Although she wouldn't nearly have the resources that Dru had access to, Khara already began to formulate ideas of how to improve her own little living area. The comforting glow of even just a few candles placed within would do wonders to make the small space feel more like home than just somewhere she was occupying, perhaps.

"Wow", there was no point in holding back the sentiment, she would probably be blurting it out again soon enough anyway if this was only the beginning.

"And you've decorated everything?" The question was more rhetorical than actual as Khara continued to look around in barely contained wonder. She couldn't remember what Sira's Aerie looked like, that entire visit had been filled with far too much other thinking about all the strangeness of just entering an Endal's home for the first time for her to really let any of it linger in her mind. This, however, was something Khara wasn't ever going to forget.

"It was pretty terrible," Zhol replied, and for a few brief instants he managed to maintain the deception that the harsh criticism was sincere. The illusion fractured though, and a lopsided grin managed to sneak through, spreading like fire through a sun-baked forest. "Symenos is but my more badder," he conceded, with a shrug and a sly, teasing wink, which managed to mask his grimace of just how terrible his linguistic attempts really were. At least his laughably bad Symenos made his attempts at Nari seem less of a failure by comparison he supposed; perhaps there was some solace he could find in that. "You will just have to spend more time with your verda, so you can practice."

As the tour began he fell into silence, trying to take part in the admiration of the eerie's decoration like the others, trying to think of some comment or observation to make. It wasn't that the space was unpleasant or uninteresting; Zhol merely lacked the vocabulary and the understanding to say anything about it. In Endrykas - or in the Emberwing pavilion, at least - decoration wasn't a thing that anyone wasted any time on. The pavilion was the place where you slept, and the place where your belongings were; there was no real concession to aesthetics beyond a few cursory efforts, because there simply wasn't the time to waste on such things. You chose fabrics that you found favourable, Zhol supposed, but mostly you just owned what you needed, you placed it where you needed, and you didn't worry beyond that because within a few days you'd need to pack it up and move it somewhere else. Decoration required permanence, and that was a concept that Zhol was still struggling to grasp.

Because of that, it was the strangest things that Zhol found fascinating. The hole in the wall with the fire inside it, like a permanent camp fire surrounded by stone. The padded chair with tiny pillows - for what, in case one became tired during the day, and could not reach one's bed? The fabric on the floor, with it's intricate pattern and the padded feel beneath his boots; he had known pavilions to place down fabrics and skins to shield against damp grass, but that was clearly not needed here, so why? What was it for? Did it shield against the cold of the stone? Was it a concession to Drusilla being a Symenestra, something comfortable to walk on if her feet were bare? And if the floor was tailored to that, what of the walls, and the ceiling? Were there differences here that he just did not notice, that made it more comfortable or enjoyable or interesting for Drusilla to climb?

He wanted to ask about such things, his curiosity twisted into an itching knot between his shoulder blades that made him feel agitated and fidgety; but at the same time he knew that to Inarta ears, his questions would seem idiotic, more stupidity from the backwards horse boy. It was that which kept his tongue silent, kept his intrigued observations free from commentary; not for fear of any insult he might cause to Drusilla, or even of the mockery he might endure from Azira; but the same old fear that every discovery of how different he was edged Khara's heart even further beyond his reach.

He tried to bury such thoughts, but didn't entirely manage to succeed. He fumbled for a distraction, exploring the room with his eyes. Again, the hole for the fire caught his attention, and he felt himself drawn towards it, head twisting as he peered at the way it was carved into the stone. "Where does the smoke go?" he asked, half to himself, half aloud.

Party for a Spider

Postby Azira on January 23rd, 2015, 3:17 pm

The awkwardness of things was unbelievable. Drusilla sharing some sort of moment with Khara, which Azira couldn't understand. It seemed both to please and embarrass the seamstress though but she couldn't work out why. Not to mention that she was speaking a foreign language to Zhol and seemed to be gesturing oddly with her hands. It almost made the huntress feel better that she had dragged up one of the few bits of knowledge that the Symenestra had given her. It made her feel like she had a reason to be here with these other individuals who clearly knew the woman better than she did.

She seemed so delighted, jabbering away at her in a language that the huntress could only assume was whatever the Symenestra spoke judging by the sounds. Her expression remained blank with incomprehension, not having the heart to explain that she couldn't understand what Drusilla had actually said. She managed a nod and a brief fixed smile in an effort to pretend that she had some idea what was going on. The switch back to Common came as a relief as she returned to a language she could understand. It made her appreciate how helpless Zhol must feel every time they spoke Nari around him. She was quick to leap to fulfil Drusilla's request concerning the door and it was only then that she became aware of the bundle of arrows under her arm. In the excitement, she'd forgotten about them and no one had commented on them.

The seamstress led the way into the main hall, Azira quick on her heels as she tried to work out the right moment to give the gift. Perhaps when she put down the pie, which Khara had gotten her. At least then she'd have the excuse that Drusilla already had her hands full. A few moments were allowed to examine the hall, which was being proudly presented to them and soaking up the awed silence from the other two. She could understand where Khara's exclamation had come from but she didn't awe herself but rather envy. It hardly seemed fair that they were forced to make do in pokey little rooms where natural light was a luxury while the Endal got a whole set of luxurious apartments. Here was a room that was only a glorified entrance way and it was bigger than where she lived. Sira's Aerie had been bigger, not that Azira had seen much of it but she'd liked it better somehow. She couldn't quite put her finger on why.

Zhol's question, whether meant for their ears or not, earned a soft snort from the huntress. Could he not figure it out? Obviously it didn't go in here and it went up so where did he think it was going to go? It seemed an extremely stupid thing to ask. It would have been different if it was something he couldn't deduce but he had eyes and, theoretically, a brain, didn't he? She remembered belatedly that they were supposed to have a sort of truce. She hadn't said that she wouldn't laugh at him if there was no good reason, just that she had no desire to kill him. At present.

Once Drusilla had her hands free, the huntress would take a moment to present her gift of a bundle of arrows. Zhol had brought nothing and Khara had brought a present that seemed to be of great importance for some reason so if she fell somewhere between the two that would be all right. At least she had brought something and it was something that would be used. It wasn't like she'd brought her a rock or something. Wouldn't have been much use in that.

"I brought arrows," she explained needlessly as the "They're practical and pretty and you have a bow. You use arrows. You need to practice anyway. Maybe not with these but... you have them anyway." Her Nari came out in a rush, hoping that her speed of speech would stop Zhol from picking up on a word of what she was saying. She was also hoping that she'd spoken too low for Khara to catch it either. Her gaze dropped from Drusilla's, wandering around the hall instead as she tried to control the blush threatening to rise in her cheeks.

Please don't make a scene. Just move on please, she begged the Symenestra silently.

Party for a Spider

Postby Drusilla on January 24th, 2015, 11:50 pm

Drusilla placed the pie on the table where she had earlier gathered fruits, juices, and wine from the aerie's stores. She grinned at Khara's awe and enthusiasm, with a laugh she had to ask, "I take it you haven't studied Pavi, Chickadee? Here, put your hand like this and then you say 'greetings' and that's how you say hello and that you're happy to see the person you are greeting."Drusilla would/could never forget this hand sign, a simple greeting she held dear... She showed Khara the hand sign a few times, before grinning and nodding that she could do it right. At the scout's question Drusilla could only think to offer her help, "Want me to stop by your room and see what can be done?"

Turning to Zhol Drusilla found him firm faced with his evaluation of her Pavi. His sternness confused her, had it been that bad? All she could do was keep her confused look and stare at Zhol. With Zhol's smirk came a wave of relief, he had just been kidding with her. She could feel the blood rushing to her cheeks from the embarrassment of her little brother's teasing. Making a hand sign she turned away, however in her befuddled and embarrassed state it became something completely different than what she had meant.(Upside down Ducks) As they had walked the hallway Zhol had fallen silent, "Verda, something is wrong?" At his question Drusilla smiled and gave a sign (up). "Up, up, away!" Speaking to her must be like speaking to a toddler, she couldn't help but think to herself.

Azira's approach had caught the Symenestra off guard. She had brought a gift, too?!?! It seemed rather unlike Azira to do such a thing. Maybe that's why she spoke in whispered Nari tones and refused eye contact. She looked over the arrows, they were beautiful. But she thought she understood Azira, in that moment at least. Another small head bow and a smile, "Thank you, Azira." Drusilla said nothing more, instead she continued on with showing off Turrin's Aeries.

Drusilla headed for a door, "This is where I stay. It's the smallest of the rooms and lacks any windows. But that's just fine by me." Inside all was neat and tidy, a habit Dru forced on herself, the only items left out where her sewing box, the hair comb from her mother, and the small glowing egg shaped stone she had shown Khara an Opalgloam. She carefully arranged the new arrows on a shelf, fussing until she was happy with how they looked. "There," she murmured to herself happily.

She hadn't expected Dru to notice her reaction to hearing the Symenestra speaking Pavi, even less to have her teach Khara any of it. The sign for greetings was echoed as a nervous glance was cast towards Zhol. She tried to remember exactly how Dru had said the word, but she wasn't sure if she could get it right. As her eyes wandered from Drusilla, briefly over to Zhol once more, and finally a quick pass over Azira, she could feel a blush rising in her cheeks.

"Th-thank you, Dru," she stammered quietly, genuinely appreciated for what she had been shown but feeling somewhat foolish in the setting. It was silly to feel that way, she was sure, but all things considered it wasn't something Khara could help.

She was almost glad for the change in subject, except that the kind offer to help decorate her room made Khara feel all the more aware of just how little personalization she had done to the space she had been living in for the last few years of her life. She wasn't sure how to respond. It might be nice to do something to her small little room, but what? Maybe the help would be a good thing.

Thankfully the others pulled the attention away from her before she could think on it too hard. Zhol with his wondering about where the smoke from the fireplace went didn't seem like such a strange question to her. It wasn't like you noticed pillars of smoke rising from Skyinarta where the Aeries were located. Not that she had ever really looked for such a thing, either. Azira seemed less than impressed with the observation and Drusilla's quick light-hearted sounding reply in Pavi made it seem as if it must have been the most obvious thing in the world. All she could do was offer Zhol a small smile and a shrug of her shoulders if he looked her way, hopefully it would at least let him know that he wasn't the only one who had been wondering.

Azira's gift was lovely, far more practical than a pie. Longer lasting too. It was then that Khara realized she hadn't even thought the Symenestra knew how to use a bow. She wasn't sure why she thought that. Dru had been in Wind Reach more than long enough to practically be an Inarta herself, really. Of course she would know how to use a bow. Maybe the lot of them could all go to the range one day? She didn't know if Azira would be game for such a thing, but it might be nice. Or you could look incompetent in front of all of them, a small shudder accompanied the thought. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea.

The next room seemed far more familiar, at least in smaller space and lack of windows. It was probably meant to be a room to be shared with a lower caste family member, which Khara supposed, was exactly what Dru was to Turrin in a way. It wasn't as fancy as the other rooms they had seen so far, but Khara felt it would probably end up being her favorite. The opalgloam caught her eye and brought a smile to her as Khara remembered the excitement as Drusilla had shown her the stone. She wondered if the others knew about it, or how much Dru had spoken of Kalinor but couldn't bring herself to ask.

'Up' wasn't exactly the most helpful answer that Zhol could have been given, but the fact that Drusilla had gone to the effort of answering in his own language earned her a smile, and put to bed any thoughts of follow-up questions. Khara's smile made it all the better; he knew he shouldn't have been so vulnerable to it, but it shot it's way into his chest like an arrow, and skewered the nervous serpent that had been coiling it's way around his innards this entire time, sending it shrinking back into the shadows. The worry that he would somehow be the odd on out here, among people who more rightly belonged, began to subside as well; no one was the exception, because they were all exceptions. A Symenestra that the Inarta feared; a Chiet that they looked down on; the huntress who kept their distance from all of them; people who should have been strangers, but had all been spun together in Drusilla's web.

His gaze settled on said huntress, and it was almost as if she and Khara had switched places. True, Khara still had her signature air of nervousness, but Azira looked just as edgy, missing all of the aggression and confidence he was used to seeing in her. There had been moments in the Unforgiving where her barbs had rescinded, and she seemed almost civil, almost relaxed instead of confrontational. He wondered if it was deliberate; thought back to their encounter at the archery ranges, and how sure he'd been that some underlying pain must have been lurking beneath the surface to cause her wounded animal personality.

He hung back a little, casually as he could manage, letting Azira inadvertently catch up with him as Drusilla led them into the next room. There were two ways he could approach this, two ways of coming upon an injured bear in the woods: you could walk up to it gently, place your hand on it's shoulder, and still run the risk of it turning on you and attempting to maul your face; or you could walk up to it and jab it in the ribs with a stick, provoking it for definite but at least ensuring the confrontation was on your terms.

"Drusilla seems really pleased that you're here," he commented, keeping his voice as quiet as he could to avoid being overheard, and to make it clear that he was making a deliberate effort to avoid the risk of embarrassing Azira in front of the others. "I know Khara is too; she really respects you, talks about your hunting trips together all the time." He paused for a moment, a gentle frown creasing his brow. "The only one who doesn't seem pleased about you being here is you. Is everything okay?"

Party for a Spider

Postby Azira on February 8th, 2015, 10:37 pm

By some miracle, Drusilla did exactly what Azira had hoped. She had no idea which god had caused such a thing but if she ever found out then she owed them big time. A sigh of relief, a furtive glance at the other two to see how much attention they'd been paying and only then did the teen allow herself to relax. She hadn't succeeded in attracting unwanted attention for once and the teen was glad. Surprise was an emotion to be expected of course as she'd expected a more enthusiastic reaction on the Symenestra's part. It was just what Drusilla did although the huntress couldn't understand how she mustered the emotion for almost every interaction. Well, nearly every reaction. Maybe she had taken notice of the atmosphere, or had taken previous encounters with Azira into account and acted accordingly for a change.

She followed the woman into the next room with some reluctance, slightly worried that the reaction she'd been expecting had only been delayed, the others allowed to get ahead of her in the process of her slow trailing. Zhol moved slowly to, the huntress becoming tense as they inadvertently neared one another. The urge to slow down further to let him gain a lead, or skirt around him was certainly present but he chose to engage her in conversation before she could act on her impulse. Her gaze flickered to him, searching his face rapidly as she tried to determine what had spurred this attempt of his. They'd formed something of a truce but that didn't mean that she wanted to talk to him, a fact that he had to be aware. His attempts at friendliness were more than a little worrying and she'd quite frankly be happier if she could repeat the beating she'd given him with her short bow the season before. It might have convinced him that slinking off was a better option than this.

Her discomfort only grew as he spoke. It was both confusing and somewhat embarrassing to find the man telling her these things. She was aware that Drusilla was happy, although that was a something she doubted she'd ever understand, but Khara was a different matter entirely. An involuntary glance was shot in the scout's direction as she tried to determine whether or not what Zhol was saying was true. Pleased that she'd come? She didn't know. Respected her? Yes, that much was a given, she was an Avora after all. Talked about their hunting trips though? That was a complete surprise. No doubt the girl had been excited to have found herself included to such an extent in every trip that Azira had brought her on and had wanted to tell others but it also meant that she was talking about the huntress. She had no idea if what she said was good or bad but she was still becoming known, even if it was only by the foreigner. It was flattering but it also brought colour to her cheeks and she was careful to avert her face from the man beside her a little.

The concern that came next, genuine seeming concern, strengthened her growing blushes and she found herself admiring her feet instead of the room they now found themselves in. There were two nice ways that she could reply to his concern (she had plenty of nasty responses), either lie and say that everything was fine and why wouldn't it be or tell the truth. Lying seemed a far better option. Dishonesty was the best policy but only sometimes.

"I don't know about everything but if you're asking about me then of course I'm okay," she responded dryly, the opportunity to be humourous one that she couldn't pass up. The teen tried to determine if her face was too red for her to make full eye contact or not then chose to risk it anyway. Casually her gaze met his as she questioned, "Why would I not be okay?" Her eyes moved away, taking in the sight of Drusilla's bedroom. There wasn't much to see although much to her chagrin, the spider was fussing with the arrows. It was a highly noticeable action given that there was nothing else to look at except a glowing egg thing, a box, a comb and ordinary bedroom things. A soft sigh escaped her. Could the woman make her feel any more self-conscious? She'd known there was something fishy about her lack of a reaction. Her gaze remained fixed on the woman's every move. Anything was better than looking at Zhol.
