Well, at least the man seems to know what he's talking about, Kaden thought to himself as they stopped for a short break. He listened intently to what Brandon had to say about running and about the resistance training. He seemed to have a bit of a philosophical view on things, but that wasn't a problem. It helped to convince Kaden that this man had a decent head on his shoulders and would probably take his job seriously. Instead of showing off to the Valintar with a bunch of flashy moves, Brandon was giving Kaden a real beginners lesson. If the Valintar were a less reasonable man he might have been angry that he wasn't being taught what he'd asked for, but Kaden understood, and appreciated the honesty in the lesson itself.

"It sounds like you have a solid plan in place already. That's good."

The Valintar didn't comment again until after they were done running. He did his best to keep up with more in shape stranger, trying to regulate his breathing as Brandon was, though he had no idea that was what Brandon was doing. Despite the exercise being harder, Kaden found it easier now that his body had woken to the challenge. It wasn't as if he was entirely out of shape, after all, and while Brandon could have run circles around him if he wanted, Kaden managed the warmup better than he thought he would have. When they were done Kaden was panting and sweating, but he was still personally pleased with his performance.

"I think I've had enough working out for the moment. You seem to have a good head on your shoulders, and you have plan. I think you will do well teaching the Yasi... although, I suppose I should see you fight, shouldn't I? Just to know you can? If you're up for a spar, how about with one of those two?"

The Valintar pointed at the two warriors from before, and they both started in surprise. One shook his head but the other stepped forward, nodding respectfully to Kaden and brandishing his wooden talon sword eagerly.

"You can spar with Jerhyn. He's decent with a sword, from what I've heard. Can you fight against an armed opponent?"

OOCJerhyn's talon sword skill is 45, unarmed 15. You have full control over him, so have fun with your post. After that, I'll probably have one final post to close the thread.

A Job for a Bat (Brandon Blackwing)

After compliments and some tired panting, the Valintar had decided to have him fight, which Brandon had somewhat expected. A combat teacher who couldn't fight wouldn't be that suited for the job; for all the man knew, Brandon could have been bluffing his way through this whole thing so to get a job. Why he'd go so far for something trivial as that was beyond the bat though; you had to be crazy or obsessed to do that, though they were both the same thing. Brandon merely grinned. “Sure, I can take him,” the bat stated after having scrutinized the Inarta quickly. Jerhyn grinned as well, eager for a fight it seemed.

Decent with a sword, was what the Valintar said. But what was decent? Was it better than Brandon was with his daggers? Was it much better? Or was it kind of the same? He did not know, and the Inarta's body did not really give Brandon many clues either; the man looked in shape, with strong arms and a relatively well developed torso. His legs were obscured by his pants, and that was what Brandon wanted to know. A good swordsman had strong legs. Well, he'd have to fight the man to find out. Shaking his muscles loose, the bat walked to the center of the pit, hearing a pair of footsteps doing the same.

Soon enough Brandon stood eye in eye with his opponent, and Brandon felt he kind of liked the man. It was not because he said anything, he didn't speak at all. Well, not with his mouth anyway; his body did the talking. His gaze met Brandon's strongly, but not like someone feeling superior or smug, but with some sort of respect. Maybe he'd witnessed the 'lesson' and understood just like the Valintar seemed to have. Perhaps he sensed Brandon was more than capable when it came to fighting. Either way he did not have the feel of the endal Brandon had met during his first human trip in the city. Jerhyn gave the bat a curt nod, and Bran returned the gesture, then lowering himself in a fighting stance.

He would not hold back, the thief decided, he would fight seriously, not to humiliate the Inarta, but to show him the respect he felt he deserved. “Prepare yourself,” the Kelvic warned, changing his stance from offensive to defensive, deciding he'd go find out just how decent his opponent was with his strange blade. It wasn't like any sword he'd seen before; it was curved slightly, and had a long handle... hm, he could make use of that. Brandon started walking slowly to the right, following the edge of a circle his mind had drawn. As for now the bat wasn't in the Inarta's range just yet, but that changed immediately. Jerhyn charged, stepping in and swinging his wooden blade towards the bat's side. The way his torso had shifted and his arm muscles had clenched had betrayed his attack however, and Brandon stepped out of range immediately, the tip of the wooden sword missing his chest by just a couple centimeter. Too close; Jerhyn was faster than expected.

It wasn't over yet though, Jerhyn wove another swing behind his first, and another, and another, a flurry of strikes with his wooden blade that would have slaughtered an ordinary opponent. But not Brandon, for he was not an ordinary opponent. Brandon had shifted his stance slightly in response to the Inarta's unexpected speed, allowing for more mobility, and the flurry of blows was hardly a threat. The thief side-stepped and back-stepped with no unnecessary motions, evading the blade with about the same margin as before; enough to avoid being hit, but also enough to counterattack if needed. It was an intricate dance of sorts; the outsider retreating nimbly, while the fire-haired man wove a swift and delicate pattern of slices, thrusts and swings.

It went on for about half a chime, and then Jerhyn retreated, probably sensing danger, and he wouldn't have been wrong. Brandon had been adapting to his speed, finding his opponent's rhythm and looking for an opportunity to counterattack. Both men turned around each other for a bit, Jerhyn seemed a lot less certain than before, probably worried about Brandon's speed and agility. And yet, Brandon knew there was no way to win a fight without one of them attacking. Who would it be though? Brandon guessed Jerhyn would be hesitant to attack now, but on the other hand that would mean he'd allow for Bran to set the pace and take the reigns. The bat readied himself for defense, though shifted his stance in an obvious offensive one, trying to lure Jerhyn out.

Worry flashed over the man's face for a split-tick, and then there was determination and a charge. The sword came from above, and Brandon stepped to the side easily, though there he was trapped. It was a feint, and the blade changed directions, now coming from the side. Brandon cursed, though he was not out of options. Instead of backing away, he stepped closer to Jerhyn, one hand grabbing the handle of the blade, stopping the swing, while the other hammered him in the stomach a couple times, intent on knocking the wind out him. Then he let his knee rise, slamming it into the chin of his opponent, causing him to stumble backwards. The bat let go of the blade for a tick, spun around and kicked at the man's hand, hitting the fingers hard, causing them to let go of the weapon. Using the same motion, Brandon continued his spin, but his leg was close to the ground now, sweeping low, mowing Jerhyn's feet from underneath him. The man fell like a tree hit by lightening, colliding with the floor ungracefully, face first, though except being a bit dazed he seemed fine.

Nevertheless, the fight was not yet over; so Bran grabbed the man's wrist and placed a foot onto his shoulder, pulling at his arm. “I can dislocate your shoulder easily from this position,” the bat informed his opponent. Jerhyn hit the ground three times with his free hand in reply, to which the thief smiled, releasing the man's arm and placing his foot back on the ground. Then he offered Jerhyn his hand to pull him to his feet, and the man took it like a good sport. The bat grinned. “Good fight,” he nodded, then he walked back to where the Valintar was standing. “Well? What do you say?”

A Job for a Bat (Brandon Blackwing)

Kaden watched it all, and it was apparent early in that Brandon was a true fighter, and likely a superior one. Though Kaden himself was no master of weapons, he had watched more than enough fights, sparring and real, to recognize a person's skill. He imagined that were this an actual fight, Brandon would have ended it even quicker than he did... especially if his opponent was using a wooden sword. His movements were quick, precise, not too much showmanship. Yes, a true fighter.

It was over soon enough, and Kaden and a few others who had gathered around to watch clapped. "Good match!" Kaden responded to Brandon, "And the job is yours, of course."
