Winter is here

No one is fond of winter, a season where most are happy to spend their days close to home in an attempt to avoid the wind, rain, and occasional bout of muggy or frosty weather. During the winter season, Endrykas holds a festival to celebrate 'The First Frost' and nearer its end, 'The Great Race' which takes place in the bowl of Stardown. The Drykas, however, are an enduring race who have stood the test of time. They are an adaptable, intelligent, and creative group of people who are at their strongest when they work together.

T R A V E L
Times and distances

Endrykas is a wandering city whose location changes with each season. While there aren't any significant roads leading from Endrykas to any other overland city, parts of the Kabrin Road may be used to shorten the distance. The cities listed for overland movement include only those that could be reached by mount within a single season. Listed travel times assume modest mounted travel at 8-10 hours per day. Terrain is taken into consideration as is the occasional use of the Kabrin Road. Note that approximate distance between Endrykas and other cities is a very rough estimate as their position each season isn't exactly the same as that of the past. More time spent traveling per day may only lessen the travel time by a couple of days at most. Travel in Cyphrus is easier than many other areas due to the relatively open, rolling grasslands. Wagons and extra cargo add 10 days to travel times and winter travel doubles travel times.

Destination Aprox. Distance Travel Time
Riverfall 562 miles 29 days
Kenash 675 miles 34 days
Claridon 340 miles 17 days
Ahnatep 335 miles 17 days
Syliras 1,575 miles 74 days

  • 4th: Spearback, also known to locals as ‘Scout’s Bane’ attack a campsite on the outskirts of the city killing all bar two of the pavilion members residing there. No one knows what caused these animals to leave their winter dens and people become concerned that these attacks might happen again. [Shahar's Challenge]
  • 5th: People everywhere weatherproof their tents and collect what little firewood there is to be found.

Image 6th – 8th Heavy Rain. The snow melts and what remains (in parts) turns into a dangerous, slick sheet of ice both man and beast have trouble traveling on.

  • 7th: The River Flower sees a few people with mild concussions from slipping on the ice further north of the city.
  • 8th: A boy is taken by wolves. Hunters go out to take down the troublesome pack.

Image 9th – 12th Frost & Fog. The city has seen the last of the strange cold snap for a while and begins to relax.

  • 10th: People who failed to prepare for the winter start fighting over dried food stocks and some wake to find their own rations raided.
  • 12th: The Watch leads a large group of Drykas who don’t think they will survive winter part way to Riverfall.

Image 13th Thunder. The sky rumbles and groans all day and night causing livestock to scatter and children to become very unsettled.

  • 13th: The first case of the flu for the season is reported at The River Flower.

Image 14th – 17th Sun with Showers. The ground turns to mud and slush. People struggle to keep their horse’s hooves healthy.

  • 18th: A man and his two sons are washed out to sea while fishing off the rocks.

Image 19th Cloudy. The sun has come out and the weather is starting to warm up a little.

  • 19th: Zibri wool sales are up but few are willing to shear their stock in fear that the winter will be too cold for the animals to survive without their wool.

Image 20th – 27th Sun and Cloud. The air is a lot warmer now and creatures that had originally gone to ground start to venture back out onto the plain.

  • 21st: Hunters spot rabbits out on the Sea of Grass.
  • 23rd: Two hunters on horseback go missing; the wife of one of the men explains that her husband was carrying a large amount of gold miza on him.
  • 25: The moon is extra bright tonight, keeping some awake. At Namak Springs, one of the pools glows a strange purple colour and those who dare to enter its waters find themselves in an alternative reality. [Moderated Event with Guest Storyteller]
  • 27th: The northern part of Star Lake starts to freeze over.

Image 28th – 40th Heavy Rain. Endrykas experiences a long bout of heavy rain that seems unusual for this time of year where the winter grounds are commonly a lot warmer. The muggy weather brings with it the dreaded seasonal coughs and colds.

  • 31st: The northern lakes near Endrykas are completely frozen over.
  • 33rd: A fleet of black ships anchor across the coast. Before the 5th bell the men from these ships manage to round up and steal approximately 300 Zibri, 50 Striders, 600 Drykas men, 180 women, and 40 children, and a large part of the winter food stores. Most of the adults were skilled doctors, hunters, labourers, watchmen etc, leaving behind loved ones that will struggle or even pass this winter due to their absence. No one knows where the pirates have come from or where they’re heading too. Not only is the city devastated by the loss of these people, but also by the deaths of almost 400 warriors who lost their lives trying to stop the pirates, including a handful of high ranking Drykas watchmen and women, clan officials, and old teachers. [Super Moderated Event]
  • 34th: Many children orphaned by the raid on Endrykas are left without parents or homes to take care of them. Pavilions with enough to spare this winter are asked to take on a few extra mouths until something more permanent can be found. [Sub-Moderated]
  • 39th: A woman falls through the ice while fishing on the north end of Lake Star and is rushed to the River Flower but the few trained nurses that remain are already overrun and don’t have the skill to treat her. They ask for volunteers to come forth and offer their time to learn and help.

Image 41st – 52nd Showers. The sun finally comes out, but the rain continues overnight and dries up through the day.

  • 42nd: People use the break in the weather to strengthen their campsites and tend to their livestock.
  • 46th: Those with dry food to spare setup in the marketplace to trade food for goods and services.
  • 50th: An old woman from the desert runs a cooking class on how to make flatbreads. She charges 2gm per lessons to cover cost of ingredients, allowing those to attend to take home what they made.

Image 53rd – 59th Cloudy. The air doesn’t seem much warmer, but people are pleased to see that the rain has stopped.

  • 55th: Another Spearback attack takes place, devastating four pavilion's overnight. A hunting party is formed to kill or drive the animal's away from Endrykas.

Image 60th – 64th Sun. The days start to feel a lot longer now that the sun is out.

  • 62nd: People from all over Endrykas come to scavenge what they can from the dead pirates and rock battered ships. [Sub-Moderated Event]

  • 67th: A strange mass of shooting stars light up the night sky well into the night.
  • 71st: A cave is discovered north of Star Lake where a small colony of starving Zith have taking shelter. [Ask your ST]

Image 73rd – 77th Sun. The ground has finally recovered, so too have the problems with mud fever.

  • 75th: The ice on the northern lakes start to wear dangerous thin and people are warned against crossing them to their favourite fishing spots.
  • 77th: Drykas camped southwest on the low lying sector of the city pack up and relocate to higher ground, no longer comfortable living near the coast after all of the trouble it's brought this season.

Image 78th – 87th Light Showers. Overnight showers bring some relief and help replenish the grasslands. The mornings are muggy and work is slow.

  • 78th: The price of fresh Zibri meat doubles to one gold miza per pound, smoked goes for six gold miza by the pound, and dried goes for ten gold miza per pound. [Ask your ST]
  • 81st: The River Flower asks for help collecting rare winter herbs for spring.
  • 85th: Volunteers are asked to sit with and write down the stories of the victims taken by the pirates for future reference.
  • 87th: 'The Great Race' usually held at Stardown is cancelled so a small group of expert riders choose to hold their own event. The tactics are dirty and the race is difficult, sweetened only by the promise of a nice prize and the locals respect.

Image 88th Cloudy. Warm, lazy days.

  • 87th: The majority of the city leaves for the spring grounds, though damp ground after thick snow fall further north makes travel slow going.

Image 89th – 91st Heavy Rain. Rain causes landslides and chaos north of Endrykas making it almost impossible to travel.

  • 90th: All the rain causes part of the outer wall to break away from Stardown, adding ten days journey to anyone who didn't leave for the spring grounds sooner.

Image 92nd Thunder Storms. Thunder booms it's goodbye to the cold and harsh winter gone.

  • 92nd: Winter ends.
