[Dust Bed Ridge] Among The Pre-Valterrian Graves (Carus)

Even in this life threatening situation, Carus managed to feel quite a bit of shame over the fact that a little slave girl had to yell at him to get up as she stood protecting him. He was surprised to see her put her wrapped arm out, letting the wolf bite before she cut it. Someone so small was clearly his superior in this regard. Both in combat and most definitely in courage.
As she dodged under the wolf and cut it, the change in the wolves moods was clear. They were more at alarm know, realising that it wouldn’t be easy prey to take down. Carus breathed deeply, calming himself. The situation didn’t seem at all as bad as before, and a hope of getting out of this situation alive stopped his body from shaking as he was about to try and put his arms under him to push himself off the ground.

At that moment he saw someone running towards them from the corner of his eye. Carus froze for a second, afraid a new threat was approaching them quickly. He turned his head towards the person and saw an old, ragged looking man come running towards him. He didn’t see him as a threat anymore, thinking that even here, a thief wouldn’t be dumb enough to attack while there were still wolves around them. The old man reached him and started tugging on his arm to pull him to his feet and Carus took the help, quickly dragging himself up to stand. The man was yelling about how they must flee, and while Carus found the man Peculiar, he didn’t think much of it as he quickly turned back towards the two wolves still lurking about, raising his knife at the ready again.

“Stop it Espalia! We must flee this place!”, Grisham yelled as he tried to pull at Carus arm again, clearly trying to make him run away with him. Carus looked at the old beggar with an incredulous look on his face. Who was Espalia, and what was the old man rambling on about? Something to think about at a later time Carus decided as he turned back to the task at hand, considering his options. He could follow the man and run with him, within a minute he could be at a safe distance, leaving the woman to fend for herself against the wolves. She seemed to have been been a lot better than Carus so far, so was it really that bad of an option?

But no, leaving the woman there alone simply didn’t seem like the right thing to do at this point. Would it had been someone else from town he would have done it in a heartbeat, but she was the first person he had met in Sunberth that didn’t completely disgust him. And even though he knew she didn’t like his kind of privileged thinking, at least she was honest to him and spoke truthfully.

“We can’t flee without my friend”, Carus said as he looked the old beggar straight in the eyes. He sighed loudly at his words, as he was hoping to escape alone with his precious Esplaia. But if she wanted her little friend with them then so be it. Grisham pulled out his knife hanging from his side. It was clearly very old and rusty, and Carus wondered if the old man even had any idea how to use the knife in an actual fight. He stood next to Carus, and they looked at the scene once again. The remaining two wolves had seemed to split up a bit, one moving towards Kelski, and one had been moving towards Carus that laid on the ground. As Grisham had arrived though, the wolf who had been moving toward him seemed a bit more cautious. Grisham, having a chance to take his lost wife home again finally, threw caution to the wind as he rushed in towards the wolf.

“For Espalia!”, he yelled loudly as he ran towards the wolf. It seemed surprised at the man's sudden outburst and recoiled a bit backwards. As Grisham came close enough it made a hesitant snap towards the hand which wielded the knife. But not quick enough, as Grishams energy was more than it had been for a long time at finally seeing his precious Espalia again. He easily moved back his hand so the wolf couldn’t reach it before slashing it across the wolfs face hard and fast. The slash opened up the wolfs face, and that quickly he had done more damage to the wolves than what Carus had managed the entire fight so far, as the wolf fell down, too injured to move or even dead. Carus quickly turned to look at the woman instead, as the last uninjured wolf stalked slowly around her in a half circle.

Kelski was in full predator mode. It was almost as if she had her feathers, her talon, and a good kill she needed to defend. She wasn’t exactly interested in protecting Carus – he meant nothing to her and was obviously of the mindset that he was better than her – but she didn’t want to see him die of stupidity without even trying to live either. Actually, if he stayed down, it would be better for her since the wolves would have a kill and she’d be able to maybe escape. But there was one problem… and it was a nagging incessant issue she’d not ran across before.

She felt protective.

Unbonded and having never been so, the Kelvic had a need in the back of her mind to bond. Any potential human she’d run across could be that elusive bondmate and more and more Kelski had felt the urge to bond. Since Kelski hadn’t exactly decided to put Carus in a category of prey, he still had potential and that was kicking in her kelvic hard-bred urge to protect. It warred inside her, a light urge that she rarely experienced before. The Kelvic all her life had been used and it had made her selfish in her survival. But these instincts tended to counter that and want her to keep people alive around her, at least until she found the right person to serve.

So she stayed, waving the dagger awkwardly, the scent of wolf blood and her own – for the wolf had lightly pierced her arm where it bit through the wrapped cloak – drove her into a high predatory state of awareness. One of the two lingering wolves knocked her down suddenly, not because it was bigger but because the old man rushed out of seemingly nowhere and screamed Stop It Espalia at the top of his lungs. He latched onto Carus and tugged.

That was all Kelski saw of the interaction before she hit the ground hard, knocked down by the wolf. It had charged by and shouldered her, meaning to pounce but the old man had distracted it too. Leaving the wolf overshooting and leaving the fallen Kelvic fully down, and overshooting its target but not by much. It’s shoulder hurt because the wolf was rock solid. And because the fall knocked the wind out of her, Kelski was suddenly gasping for breath trying to draw in air to her lungs. She rolled to her hands and knees, but fighting breath made fighting wolves incredibly hard. The dagger she still clutched in her hand awkwardly, dragging in air at last and trying to get up. Kelski wasn’t big and being knocked down so violently hurt and winded her.

Across the way, somehow, one of the two remaining wolves was down and not moving. The old man had done it with what looked like just a rusty old dagger. Kelski was on her feet now, backing away from the circling wolf, as Carus and the old man… the feeling of protectiveness less now that her situation was more dire. Kelski glanced over her shoulder at them, trying to join them with her backpedaling, and saw the old man raise his hand, an odd clear fluid filling his palm and suddenly catching on fire. The man lobbed the fire at the wolf threatening her. The flaming substance splashed over the wolf and lit its coat on fire.

Kelski’s eyes showed white with fear and she put Carus between herself and the man who threw fire. The wolf screamed again, throwing itself to the ground, rolling, trying to put out the fire before it bolted still aflame. The Kelvic started to shake. Her brain was releasing a lot of chemicals the Kelvic was unfamiliar with, having never been in a life and death battle before, and having never witnessed magic first hand, even if it was used to save her life.

The Kelvic dropped down on one of the nearest Crypt steps and continued to shake. Through chattering teeth she asked softly…. “Are you alright, Carus?” To the stranger, she simply stared, studying his features and wondering who and what exactly he was.

Carus looked in amazement as the old man seemed to somehow make the wolf catch on fire. It was something he had never seen first hand before - Magic. He had heard of it before but it had never truly interested him. It was a useful skill for sure - but the amount of time you had to put down studying it had never quite seemed to be worth it in Carus mind. He definitely thought differently of it now that it had saved his life. The wolves who were still able to move had noticed the tables had clearly turned on them, and they moved off as quick as they could, leaving the dead and too hurt behind without a second thought about it.

When Carus saw them moving away he turned to Kelski and saw her go down. He hurried over to her, limping a little bit with his leg, the old man following close behind him. He felt the man trying to take a hold of his hand but Carus quickly snatched it away when he felt it. He would have to figure out soon what was wrong with the man, and how long he might be following him. It obviously seemed like he thought Carus was someone else, now to a normal person it would be easy to explain to him who he was but something else that was obvious was that the man was clearly crazy.

As he came closer Carus stopped abruptly, unsure if the fight had made her more comfortable about how near he could be her. She had clearly tried to keep her distance before and after what they just went through he didn’t feel like offending her, if it was for no good reason at least. He looked at her as she shook. He put on his best smile and even laughed a bit when she asked how he was, trying to calm her down a bit. He stuck out his leg in front of him a bit as blood ran down from it, inspecting it.

“It won’t even need stitches I think, as long as I can clean it off a bit. So yes, I am quite alright”, he said, still smiling at her. “Are you okay though?”, he asked, looking over her a bit, hoping she couldn’t tell the worry in his eyes. He didn’t know why she started shaking all of the sudden, since she had seemed a lot more brave than him during the fight. He saw the old beggar as he moved up next to him, this time getting a hold of Carus arm with his own and giving it a tender squeeze.

“Oh, Espalia. You can’t understand how much I’ve missed you”, the old man said, as tears started to form in his eyes as he looked lovingly at Carus. Carus confusion grew a bit again, and he started to feel somewhat fearful over the fact that the old man looked like he might at any second try to kiss him. “You’ve cut your hair shorter since last time I saw you, I like it”, He said as he let his other hand move up to Carus hair. At this Carus took a quick step back that the old man wasn’t ready for, as he lost his grip of Carus arm.

“I’m not Espalia, whoever that is. My name is Carus”. Carus face turned to a mix of disgusted, annoyed and amused at the same time as he looked at the old man, unsure what to do. He didn’t know how crazy the man was, or if he was likely to use his magical abilities of him if he realised that he had saved someone he didn’t know, but the old man just got a big grin on his face at Carus words.

“Oh Espalia, you always was the joker in out marriage”, he said with his grin still firmly held, looking lovingly at Carus face. Carus had the same look as before as he turned his head from the old man, looking at Kelski with a pleading look on his face, hoping she could help him out somehow.

Once the shock of the fight had left her, and truthfully it only took a few moments, the Kelvic was up on her feet staring at Carus and at the old man. The young slave didn't know what the hell the man was up too, but all the blood on her hands was making her hungry. She just simply watched Carus as she slowly went to one of the wolves - the one the old man had killed with the dagger - not the fire that was too weird. She knelt by it as she kept an eye on Carus, and made sure it was dead. Then she took her dagger and cut at it, skinning the wolf as it lay. "I don't know what to say, Espalia..." She said with a twinkle in her eye, and pulled back the fur coat. She dove right into the shoulder of the wolf, and down into the flank and carved off a nice bloody steak.

The Kelvic began to eat it, ravenous, having not had fresh hot meat in a whole season. Slaves got nothing fresh and certainly no meat. She ate quickly, not knowing how long someone would let her at the corpse. The meat was delicious and she moaned in pleasure as she chewed carefully and quickly, stuffing more meat into her mouth and keeping an eye on the area. She kept cutting strips with her dagger, stabbing at the corpse and carving off delicious chunks still steaming from the animal's body heat. After a few moments, she opened up the visceral cavity and pulled forth the heart, eating it greedily.

The meal lightened her mood, and did far more for her than Darvin could ever do taking her out into the city. She needed to feed, needed a belly full of fresh meat, and didn't even mind as Carus was quietly and quickly ushered off by the old man. Kelski couldn't help him against crazy. She couldn't even help him against old. But she could help herself and eat.

And eat she did... until she felt sick and bloated.

Sooner or later, Darvin would appear to collect her and find her stuffed full of fresh meat, with a liver carefully wrapped along with the rest of the meat she could carry in the remains of her tattered cloak. It was a good day... a very good day and dead raw wolf was absolutely delicious.
