Okara’s Sanctuary
Image

Okara’s Sanctuary is located east of the Overwater Ranchos. The five acres she chose is fairly distant from the City Core but that choice was intentional. Okara has a long walk to work at the Panacea each day but chose to situate her home on the opposite end of the settlement so that if someone is injured and unable to make it the Panacea she can provide assistance if she is around or a place to rest if she is not.

Almost a third of Okara’s five acres are taken up by a wide stream that flows down to the sea. In dry seasons the stream shrinks to a shallow trickle over slick, mossy rocks. In wet seasons the stream swells up to a fast-flowing water body that teems with fish and aquatic life. During it’s highest points there are places where someone could comfortably soak their body but the inconsistent depth and rocky bottom of the stream would make it implausible to traverse with a canoe or other water craft. What lies further up the stream beyond the property is currently unknown.

The remaining two-thirds of Okara’s Sanctuary is primarily thick, tropical forest with a relatively short strip of sandy beach above the tide line. The forested portion of her land is heavily wooded with palm trees, some of which are coconut bearing. The other fruit-bearing trees that have been found on the property include lemon, mango, and avocado. Insects, birds, and small mammals call this patch of forest home and take no notice of the blonde woman that pretends to claim dominance.

A small, one person tent is set up on the beach with a crate of cooking supplies set beside it. This tiny camp is the only sign that the land has been settled and claimed. The tropical forest behind it still stands virgin and unchallenged. The potential of the property is immense and waiting to be exploited.

Syka Submissions - Locations, Ideas, Etc

Postby Anais Seawind on June 29th, 2018, 5:14 am

Claiming a bit of Syka. :) Hopefully.

Image
Image
Anais' five claimed acres are predominantly untamed Sykan jungle, with an uneven strip of rocky beach at its forefront. Located just at the beginning of the peninsula leading to Treasure Point, the land she's chosen is not so far from the community Core that Anais feels isolated and enjoys a scenic, if distant, view of the southernmost tip of Solitude Isle. It is here, on the beach, that Anais hopes to build a serviceable dock and workspace, while continuing to live on the casinor that has been her home since leaving the Seawind pod years ago.

The rocks extend both outward, into the ocean, and inward toward the imposing green of the jungle, where they form a ridge that runs nearly the length of the beach. While the ridge is, at most, a few feet high, it does give the jungle the added height, which does little to inspire calm comfort at the thought of exploration. In fact, if one were to approach the jungle from the beach, careful planning and some climbing would be unavoidable. While Anais has yet to attempt a more thorough exploration of the jungle itself, she has begun picking away at some of the looser rocks and attempting to form a more stable path into its depths. Her efforts so far have yielded minimal results; a casual observer might notice an area slightly less overgrown than the rest. Or they might not.

ImageThe view inland is one of vast and almost overwhelming vegetation. What starts out small, as brush and bush and vine quickly thickens until trees and shadowy mystery obscure the view. Having lived most of her life in the wide-open of the Suvan Sea, Anais is both intimidated and intrigued by the proximity of such an undiscovered wilderness. Although she has spent some time on the periphery, but is hesitant to lose sight of the shoreline yet. What dangers or benefits might lie within are still completely unknown to her, however the noises at night hint at an animal presence much more at ease in the green shadows than the Svefra is.

What the land is lacking, so far as Anais has seen, is a source of fresh water. While this doesn't pose too much of an inconvenience due to Syka's communal water storage and Anais' gnosis, which allows her to ingest salt water as if it were fresh, she does hope to discover a source of freshwater further inland. Aside from that, the land is all Anais could wish for: a secure and independent place to dock her boat, a bit of beach to call her own, and an abundance of food at her fingertips. The five acres she's taken to calling "Seawind's Solace" has already begun to soothe her wounded spirit.

We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch - we are going back from whence we came.

Syka Submissions - Locations, Ideas, Etc

Postby Sophia Sunshore on July 17th, 2018, 4:10 pm

Sophia has claimed her five acres between the City Core and Uta’s Place. Approximately half her land is on the beach with the other half stretching back into Syka, through the jungle fringes and then into the deeper rainforest. Within the jungle there is a small pool about halfway in, and a stream runs along the back, acting as a boundary of sorts. She has yet to discover either – she doesn’t dare venture too far into the trees at the moment. The beach near the trees is clean, white sand with a few fruit trees popping up here and there. Moving closer to the sea small rocks start to litter the surface, and there are a couple of large boulders near the water’s edge.

Her present housing situation is a large 4-person tent set up on the beach with the opening facing out toward the sea. The tent flaps are rarely closed, save for when she is sleeping, but even then she often does not shutter it, leaving them to flutter in the breeze as the sound is comforting to her – it reminds the young woman of the sails from the ships of her childhood.
The tent is fairly well organized as Sophia does not have many possessions. She has the main center compartment, and then a large ‘room’ off to each side. One of these is where she stores her things and the other contains her bedroll where she sleeps. It is quite sparse, but that is how she likes it, and she can often be found stretched out in the empty middle compartment watching her Tavan, Pearl parade around on the beachfront. She has decorated her tent with strings of beads and shells, evidence of her Svefra heritage.

She has an agreement in place with Randal to build a simple home. There will be a large platform, slightly raised off the beach that will make up the main area of her living quarters. The right side will be one step down and there will be a firepit where Sophia will do her cooking next to a seating area. On the other side is where she will work, and there will also be a small, raised area surrounded by gauzy mosquito nets where she will sleep. The platform will have no walls, and will instead be supported by beams that hold the roof, and a short lip will run around the structure to save people or things falling off. In particularly blustery times she will be able to roll down and tie canvas sides to keep her possessions safe and dry inside.

I don't have any pictures or a fancy heading because I am not very good at making things like that. I hope this is okay though! (I will update the section with the completion date of the structure once my intro thread is finished.)

Sunny Shores

NOTE: During the Fall Sophia is a Dhani, specifically a golden eyelash viper. See here for more detailed info.

Syka Submissions - Locations, Ideas, Etc

Postby Erida on August 11th, 2018, 1:53 am

Claiming a decent piece of land between the mercantile and the bungalows, Erida's land is three quarters beachfront with some scattered trees around and the last quarter heading into unexplored jungle. Though she hasn't taken the time to actually explore the forested part of her land, the Ethaefal woman takes comfort in knowing that the unknown area is actually in her possession for her to play with it as she wishes. There isn't any fresh water that runs through her land, but she's comfortable washing herself in the sea and can drink at the community's water storage when it's needed.

She has yet to decide whether she wants a professionally built house on her land, but Erida is quite content with the large, four-person tent she was able to set up on her own. She has insect netting draped over the opening of the tent for the comfort of herself and her canine companion, while the tent itself was perched in the shade of two trees which were unusually close to the shoreline, compared to the other trees. The opening of the tent is situated so that Erida can look out at the sea, which is something something that is important to her Eth form and the Konti seeming she is during the day.

Everything she has in the world is in that tent, which isn't much as it is. She keeps her miscellaneous items in her backpack that stays in a large chest near the edge of the tent. Her candle making supplies are kept inside of the large pot she uses, though the beeswax is kept in the chest to prevent insects and other animals from getting to it.

Syka Submissions - Locations, Ideas, Etc

Postby Anais Seawind on August 21st, 2018, 11:29 pm

Before I just post, I wanted to make sure the updated version is alright. Mostly similar, but I did include a bit about the construction that won't technically be finished until Fall 20. I can take it out, but it messes with the flow. :D If its not alright, I'll just wait to post it til Fall starts.

Image
Anais' five claimed acres are predominantly untamed Sykan jungle, with an uneven strip of rocky beach at its forefront. Located just at the beginning of the peninsula leading to Treasure Point, the land she's chosen is approximately a bell's fast walk from the community core and enjoys a scenic, if distant, view of the southernmost tip of Solitude Isle.

The rocks dotting the beach extend both outward, into the ocean, and inward toward the imposing green of the jungle. Along the treeline, the windworn gray shapes form a ridge that runs nearly the length of the beach. ImageWhile the ridge is merely a few feet high, providing a mostly visual barrier between sand and jungle, it does give the jungle the illusion of added height. While Anais has yet to attempt a thorough exploration of the jungle itself, she has begun picking away at some of the looser rocks and debris, in an attempt to form a more stable path into its depths. Her efforts so far have yielded minimal results; a casual observer might notice an area slightly less overgrown than the rest, and a barely discernible path leading off at a shallow angle from the rocky ridge to a small, recently discovered grove of wild banana trees.

Along this jungle border, Anais has already experienced run-ins with the local Sykan wildlife. Small monkeys, no more than a foot in height, have introduced themselves. After her initial surprise at the sight, the Svefra was pleased to discover that these tiny creatures, while mischievous, seem to mean no harm and have been no more than a playful distraction to her daily life. Various birds also call the area home, as can be expected, and Anais has seen their colorful shapes in the air and in the trees - their songs and sounds are a constant presence in the air from dawn throughout the day, although they are quieter during the midday hours and almost silent at night.

((It is here, on the beach, that Anais plans to build a simple wooden dock and a small, lofted living space. Until its completion (20th of Fall 518AV), Anais continues to live onboard her casinor.))

Made of local lumber, the dock extends outward 30 feet into the Suvan Sea. A small offshoot leads from the furthest point of the dock to the entrance of Anais' simple, cozy living area. A one-room construct roughly 10x20 feet, the home has been built on stilts rising up from the ocean floor. This position allows for sea breezes to aid in cooling the interior, Imagewhile also keeping it safer from any potential land-dwelling predators and pests. The walls are nearly more open than enclosed, however Anais has installed insect netting over the openings and sturdy, waterproofed canvas that is mostly left rolled up but can be lowered to protect herself and her belongings from inclement weather.

Inside, more canvas hangs, dividing the space into two smaller areas - one for sleeping, and one for general living space. It is the general living space that greets the visitor: a small table, several chairs, a set of shelves and a fireplace are the extent of her furnishings in this area. Beyond this, behind a plain canvas curtain, lies a simple straw bed, small desk and a bedside table. Her hut is small, but Anais is quite comfortable in it; having lived most of her life onboard boats of varying sizes, the lack of excess space and the ready sight and sound of the ocean make her home on land feel more like her home at sea.

ImageDespite its rocky nature, the beach and its particular attributes are what led Anais to claim the land as her own. Tidal pools, areas where the brackish sea water remains even as the tide goes out, dot the coastline up and down the land. These pockets of water vary in size from shallow depressions a scant few feet wide to the largest, a pool wider than Anais is tall and approximately 15 - 20 feet deep. Aside from their beauty, these tidal pools teem with life and provide relatively easy access to food for both Anais and her sea turtle tavan.

The water in the tide pools is home to many varieties of sea life, from mollusks to urchin to seaweed to crabs, and even small fish that might be too tiny for a meal but would serve as adequate bait for fishing. Studying the tide pools can provide a peaceful distraction on a lazy afternoon and soaking in them is a low-energy way to escape the heat of Syna during the midday hours.

The view inland is one of vast and almost overwhelming vegetation. What starts out small, as brush and bush and vine quickly thickens until trees and shadowy mystery obscure the view. What dangers or benefits might lie within are still completely unknown to her, however the noises at night hint at an animal presence much more at ease in the green shadows than the Svefra is.
