Kamilla Circe Gordon

49th of Summer, 519AV

”Uh, Kam?”

Kamilla rolled her eyes, continuing to brush her long locks of dark brown hair as she readied herself for the day, barely reacting to the androgynous voice of her talking flower, Roo. ‘Here we go’ she thought to herself as the plant began what she knew would be an endless stream of chatter for the day, as usual. In all honesty, she was surprised and grateful to have gotten as far into her morning routine as she had without Roo’s verbal incontinence. ”What is it Roo?” She asked, not bothering to look in the plant’s direction.

”I’m not feeling too green.”

The words along with the gloomy tone the plant spoke with, completely different to its usual uppity energetic sound, caused her to frown before finally turning to look at her pet flower, confusion evident in her expression.

As her gaze landed upon the talking flower, confusion quickly turned to concern as Kamilla noticed a significant change in Roo, both in appearance and demeanor. The flower was hunched over, looking unwell, it’s leaves a pale shade of the healthy green they’d become since their arrival in Syka and even the cluster of flowers that made up what Kamilla considered to be the plant’s big ‘face’ flower, lacked the vibrant violet hue she loved so much. Something was definitely wrong.

Concern now taking over, Kamilla moved towards her pot plant, kneeling beside it and bringing her head near for a second inspection. Unfortunately, it only confirmed her initial observation that Roo was indeed, not well, the hunched over plant giving two coughs as if to highlight her discovery, although she doubted it was actually coughing so much as mimicking the sickly behavior it had learned from herself and others.

”What’s wrong Roo? What do you need?”

”I don’t know, just something. I feel tired.” The flower’s androgynous voice continued to carry the worryingly gloomy tone, the hunched shadow cast on the wall by the sunlight that filtered through the window mirroring its morbid behaviour. It was not unusual for the plant to behave as if tired, it happened every night when the sun’s rays had disappeared and even sometimes during prolonged periods in the shade, but never once while in direct sunlight.

Prior to owning the talking plant, Kamilla had never been responsible for the life and health of one, so she completely lacked any knowledge relevant to plants other than that they needed soil, water and sunlight. Luckily, her plant could talk, and so any and all of her gardening knowledge had come directly from the source. Because of this, Kamilla was especially worried by the fact that even Roo could not tell her what to do.

Getting to her feet and grabbing her bag, Kamilla offered Yennefer, her pet yowlwing two gentle pats on the head, the grey feline not bothering to wake from its nap, before picking the pot plant up and heading for the core of the settlement. If she recalled, the blonde Sophia, had pointed her in the direction of Uta’s place a few days earlier. The town’s herbalist seemed like her best bet.

The sun beat down from above as usual, making Kamilla’s hurried trudge across the hot sands that much more tiring, but she did not care. She may have bought it by accident and it may have constantly annoyed her with its incessant chatter, but she’d formed a bond with the purple flower and the idea of losing it scared her.

So We Wander // So Who Knows Pt.2

Sophia was knelt in the clearing just down from Uta’s Place, scribbling notes in her journal. She was inspecting the cinnamon tree sapling she had planted out earlier in the month and noting any progress.
49 Summer, 519
Hot, dry weather.
The tree has put on about a forearm’s length of growth since planting - surprisingly fast growth.
Lots of new leaves, all look very healthy. Stems are strong.
Rapid growth down to unusually hot spring? Artificially watering every 2-3 days. Using a fertiliser of Uta’s creation every 10-15 days.

She then sketched a quick drawing of the sapling, rough lines going down to represent the whippy stem and small branches it was growing. She paid more attention to the shape of the leaves, as the usual identifying factor of a plant it was important to get them right. She carefully sketched the pointed oval shapes, with three distinct veins running up the lengths. Satisfied, she snapped the book shut, gave the sapling another glance over and stood to make her way back to Uta’s.

Sophia arrived at an empty house, but she had been expecting to. The botanist was likely still down in her cave, going over her inventory of dried specimens for any damage or damp. She settled herself at a table and placed her journal next to a pile of other notes. The pair had been working recently on the project in the clearing, studying how various plants grew from a seed stage. Uta had also started to develop things that may aid plants in their growth such as fertilisers, as such a thing could be very beneficial to the settlement when it came to growing certain foods.

She was comparing notes they had made on previous stages of growth for certain trees in the clearing when footsteps announced the arrival of another person. Sophia paused before looking up, as they were coming from the opposite direction that the botanist had headed. She turned, blonde hair falling over her shoulder as eyes took in the familiar face of Kamilla approaching Uta’s residence.

The Svefra smiled as the brunette drew closer. “Kamilla, hi, it’s good to see you again!” Sophia’s brow furrowed slightly at the concerned look the other woman was wearing, and her eyes fell on the item clutched in her hands. Kamilla was holding a sad-looking plant in a pot, of a species Sophia had never seen before. Curiosity piqued, she pushed herself up from the table to meet the other woman properly.

She peered at the plant, blue eyes alight with curiosity. It was a fairly simple plant, a pair of leaf stems and a flower. It looked wilted, and the leaves were a pale green that was clearly not the natural shade they were supposed to be. She flicked her gaze back up to Kamilla.
“What sort of plant is that? It doesn’t look too healthy.”
Sophia blinked, realising that if the woman had come to Uta’s Place, she was probably after the botanist and not herself. “Uta is not here at the moment, though I suppose you can see that..!” She smiled. “Can I help?”

As she left the sands of the beach and began making her way through the greener terrain, Kamilla couldn’t help but feel a hint of worry at being back in the jungle added to her current worry of losing Roo, which far outweighed the former. It was odd, that she considered a flower a part of her family, but that didn’t make it any less true. While Yen offered warmth and physical contact, Roo offered its very vocal nature, replacing the lonely silence that she’d grown so used to over the years.

”Where are we going?” The sickly flower asked, its ‘head’ lazily looking from side to side in a manner that resembled concern.

”To find help...”

When she finally spotted what could only be Uta’s place, assuming Sophia’s directions were accurate, Kamilla let out a short sigh of relief. A moment later, her ears were greeted by a familiar voice, brown eyes searching and quickly finding a blonde head of hair belonging to the Svefra who’s directions had lead her to where she was now. ”Sophia...” She began, a genuine smile of relief on her face. While not Uta, the blonde certainly proved herself to know, at the very least, a lot more about plants than herself. ”Try and stay quiet Roo, please.” she muttered under her breath as she approached the interesting home.

Not bothering to wait for a formal invitation, Kamilla stepped onto the suspended home she assumed to belong Uta, noting the sound the wood made as she stepped onto it with a bit of uncertainty. Sophia was quick to ask questions about Roo, Kamilla quickly being reminded of her eager demeanour.

”This is R... I, uh, I’m not sure... but somethings wrong.” She mentally reprimanded herself for nearly using Roo’s name. Thankfully, the Svefra seemed eager to help and although Kamilla certainly would have preferred the settlement’s primary botanist, Uta, she was not about to turn down the blonde’s help.

Brown eyes went to meet with the blue irises of the Svefra, a hint of concern evident within Kamilla’s gaze as she offered a small smile. ”Please... this plant is like family to me.” She did not care if it sounded odd, it was true and she wanted Sophia to understand how important Roo’s survival was to her.

Sophia peered closer at the plant, as if staring at it might reveal answers to her questions. Blue eyes flicked back up to meet the brown ones of Kamilla and she nodded once. Something was certainly wrong with the plant, and at first glance it looked to be a simple case of under watering. Wilting tended to be the first response plants show when there is a lack of water, though the paling of the leaves led Sophia to believe there may be something else going on.

“Please… this plant is like family to me.”
The Svefra paused before offering the other woman a small smile. Aside from Uta, she had yet to meet anyone who loved plants with the same ferocity she did. And Kamilla was not a person she had imagined would be so attached to one, though she was not sure why. Sophia turned back to the table she had been sitting at and closed the journals she had been perusing, moving them to one side. She motioned for Kamilla to put the plant down. “Here, let me have a closer look.”

When the plant was placed in front of her, Sophia would first press a finger into the soil, noting that it was damp, so under watering was certainly not the problem here. She picked up the pot to feel the weight of it and nodded to herself as she did so. Over watering was not the issue either. If the pot was unusually heavy, the soil would likely be waterlogged, but it was a decent weight. Plus Kamilla would probably have struggled to carry a waterlogged pot here in the first place.

Sophia flicked her gaze briefly over to the other woman again, before brushing her left hand deliberately over a wilted leaf. If Kamilla was observant, she would notice the grassland scene the covered the Svefra’s entire forearm, a scene that appeared to be alive. Sophia paused for a moment before frowning and touching the leaf again, her hand lingering on the foliage. A mumbled noise of dissatisfaction left her mouth in a huff. Cultivated plants usually responded to her much more willingly than those in the wild, or at least her experience had led her to believe that. She likened it to a tiger and a domesticated cat species. With this plant however there was nothing, not even a whisper of recognition.

She abandoned her efforts of communication and moved on to inspecting the leaf instead. As she peered at the underside, looking for any bugs she ventured a question to Kamilla. “Where did you get this plant? I assume it is not native to Syka.” She had a dual reason for asking the question. Sophia would be able to tell if it was the conditions of Syka that might be affecting the plant, but also if it were simply refusing to communicate with her because its biome was so far removed from that which she was marked with.

Sophia methodically looked over each leaf, the stem and the flower as she checked for any pests, finding none. The plant was also clear from blemishes that might indicate a disease. ”Okay, so it’s not been infected by anything, and there aren’t any bugs on it that I can see. So I can only conclude that it is not getting the nutrients it needs.” She brushed the flower with a finger. ”How often does it flower? I imagine it might have used up all its energy flowering and the soil needs replenishing.”

She patted one of the journals next to her. ”Uta has been working on something she calls fertilisers. You add them to the soil that plants grow in and they put nutrients back. She’s still testing some of her more complicated ones, but we can try a simple seaweed fertiliser and see if it perks up?” If Kamilla liked the sound of Sophia’s plan, the Svefra would stand and head for the beach to gather the seaweed they needed, giving the other woman the choice to stay behind or accompany her.

Kamilla Circe Gordon

Kamilla hated to beg and plead, it made her feel weak, powerless, pitiful, but unfortunately there were some things that all her power, knowledge and experience couldn’t help with and Roo’s sudden illness was one such thing. She’d have to swallow as much of her pride as possible if it meant helping the previous plant recover from whatever it was currently suffering from. Thankfully, Sophia seemed as eager to help as she’d been during their first meeting.

Following the Svefra’s instructions, Kamilla gently placed Roo’s pot down on the table between herself and Sophia, brown eyes watching as she went about her investigation. At first, the blonde pressed a finger into the dirt then picked up the pot before placing it back down, hopefully missing the slight frown Kamilla was giving her due to her seemingly nonsensical fidgeting. The mage had to remind herself that Sophia was, at the very least, more knowledgable when it came to plants than she was.

The blonde cast a brief glance in her direction, Kamilla feigning a smile, before returning her attention to Roo, brushing her fingers across one of its two leaves that Kamilla considered its hands. Seeing this, the mage tensed slightly, completely expecting the talkative plant to speak, but thankfully it did not, simply remaining silent and somewhat hunched over. The Svefra repeated the action, looking slightly confused but once again Roo gave no reaction. It was at this point that Kamilla noticed the grassland scene that covered the blonde’s arm, it’s lifelike appearance resembled Finn’s mark of Laviku while its actual deprivation resembled the Sea of Grass Kamilla had crossed during her trip from Zeltiva to Riverfall. It was a curious discovery, but she chose not to say anything for the time being.

With her odd leaf stroking inspection seemingly yielding no results, the questions began, Kamilla taking a brief moment to compose her answers into the least suspicious format she could think of on such short notice. ”I have no idea where it’s from, I bought it from a travelling merchant in Riverfall,” She’d never asked the man where the plants had come from, of course she hadn’t known they could talk at the time.

A brief pause as considered the woman’s analysis. It was simply lacking nutrients? She certainly hoped it was that simple. ”That’s the only flower it’s ever had, though it had seemed very energetic since arriving in Syka and has definitely grown several inches.” It was at this point that Kamilla began to worry that Roo didn’t completely abide by the rules of regular, more mute, plants. It was unique after all. Besides it’s ability to talk, which was if course Roo’s stand out feature, even trimming the purple flower went a bit differently to how she assumed it would with a regular plant. Instead of trimming the tops of the plant, when Roo grew too big for her liking, Kamilla would gently pull it from the soil and cut the stem to her preferred length before replanting it. ”It’s kind of unique in its own way.” She added in a feeble attempt to inform the blonde in what she was dealing with.

Regardless, Sophia seemed fairly confident that she’d discovered the problem and had a solution, a seaweed fertiliser. Having no better options, Kamilla figured it would be her best bet. ”Okay, great, let’s try that then...” She blurted our, surprisingly eager considering her usual calm and unenthusiastic nature.

Watching Sophia turn to head for the beach, Kamilla let out an internal sigh of relief at having made it through without any unwanted surprises or outbursts from Roo, despite its sick state, Kamilla had to admit she was quite impressed with the ill little flower.

cough

With that, Kamilla felt her heart drop somewhat, her body freezing in place while her eyes shot to Roo and then to Sophia. All the while, in her mind, all she could think was ‘you don’t even have a mouth to cough from!’.

Sophia didn’t pause in her inspection of the plant while Kamilla answered her questions, so she was also oblivious to the odd looks the woman was giving her. ”Huh, really? How long has it been in flower?” Sophia’s interest in the plant was piqued further. Most plants were seasonal, especially flowering ones, although the unique climate of Syka probably offered a few ideal conditions for continuous flowering.

She was pleased when Kamilla appeared eager to try out her idea for fertilisers, and happily clapped her hands together once before launching into an, admittedly unasked for, explanation. “So there are two different things we can do with the seaweed. One is an immediate thing and it’s more like a quick fix until the more longer-term solution is done. For that we need to find seaweed that is really dry, basically crispy. Then we can break it up into really small pieces and work it into the soil of the pot. Hopefully that should perk up the plant for about a week.” Eyes flicked back over to the poor, wilted specimen for a tick before she looked back at Kamilla.

“For the longer term fertiliser, it isn’t the end of the world if the seaweed isn’t super dried, though I think the drier it is the better the fertiliser will be. What we have to do for that one is get a barrel that can hold water, then soak a load of the seaweed in it for at least a week, maybe more if you can be super patient. Then we just take out the seaweed and all the good stuff should have leeched from it into the water and you can water your plant with it. It should last you ages as you definitely don’t want to dump it all in at once. One of the things Uta told me was that too much fertiliser can be worse than none at all.”

Sophia smiled at Kamila to check that the woman had followed her ramblings. “Oh, and I don’t mind keeping it at my place for you, unless you want it in easy reach. It’ll start to smell really strongly of old decomposing seaweed.” She chuckled lightly.

The Svefra turned again to head for the beach when she heard a pitiful little cough from behind her, in the direction of the plant. Her gaze shot quickly to Kamilla first, to note the woman seemed to be frozen in place and staring right back at her. Sophia slowly turned to let her eyes fall on the plant sitting innocently on the table. ”Okay… I… You heard that too right?” She went to take a step towards the plant before changing her mind. ”I know I’m not going crazy.” She chuckled again, though this time the sound was slightly more hysterical than before.

Sophia was not a stranger to being able to communicate with plants for her Gnosis allowed her to do so. But never in spoken words - that just was not possible. Plants could not speak. They don’t even have mouths! ”Kamilla, please tell me why your plant coughed.” She again looked over at the brunette, eyes a little too wide. ”And don’t try to pretend it didn’t happen, I can see on your face you heard it too.”

It took Kamilla only a moment to realise that the cat was, without a doubt, out of the bag. She could see it in the blonde’s eyes, let alone her words, that the Svefra was determined that it had been Roo that had coughed, she was right after all. The wave of panic that had shot through her body slowly dissipated as Kamilla let out a loud sigh of defeat, the feeling fading into a subtle anxiousness. She’d been found out, there was no point trying to lie about it any more.

cough cough

This time Sophia was facing in her direction and would clearly see the flower shake with the sound it made, even going so far as to raise a leaf to its petals like a person would with their hand to their mouth. Another sigh from Kamilla as the flower turned to face the Sophia, still hunched over and looking ill.

”Kam, I think the flower’s out of the *cough* pot. Sorry.”

Hearing Roo’s words, Kamilla’s eyed widened in slight panic again, coughing was one thing, but now it had revealed that it could speak as well. Great. It was definitely unavoidable now. ”So... this is Roo, my talking flower.” She shrugged as if that was a good enough explanation. ”Who can’t seem to keep his petals shut, no matter how often I tell him to.”

The plant lazily looked toward Kamilla as she spoke, too ill to protest its innocent like it usually would. ”He just can’t seem to keep his petals shut. I’m sorry, but I’m sure you can understand why I’d want to hide something like this.” She certainly hoped the Svefra would understand, a talking pot plant was far from normal.

”I hope this seaweed stuff works.”

A roll of the eyes would be directed at Roo who had seemingly thrown all caution to the wind now that he’d been discovered. Honestly, she had no idea how the Svefra would react, though she knew the woman liked plants and hoped that would work in their favor. She was relying on Sophia and her ‘seaweed’ fertiliser after all. They both were.

Sophia was still watching Kamilla, though the plant was directly next to the brunette so she got a good view of it when it coughed again. Its actions were remarkably human-like, the plant’s stem shaking with the effort and a leaf moving up to cover a non-existent mouth. It was a pitiful little sound and for a moment Sophia’s gaze softened as she forgot she was looking at a moving, coughing plant for it looked so forlorn.

Her eyes widened again however, as the plant appeared to actually look in her direction before speaking! She heard Kamillia’s sigh too, so the other woman was clearly well aware of the sentient nature of the plant.
”Kam, I think the flower’s out of the *cough* pot. Sorry.”

While Sophia didn’t outright panic, her mouth did open just a little as she stared at the drooping purple flower. ”Wha- …how? I-“ She stuttered an attempt at forming a coherent sentence before looking over at Kamilla to hear her explanation.

”So... this is Roo, my talking flower.”
The nonchalance with which the other woman spoke gave Sophia pause, and she sucked in a breath to calm herself down. She gave a brief nod in response before composing herself to speak properly. ”I… yes. It’s not exactly an everyday occurrence!” She chuckled, the sound slightly higher pitched than normal.

Sophia drifted over and crouched in front of the plant again. A talking pot plant was probably not the strangest thing in the world, and now that the initial shock of hearing it was starting to wear off fascination was pushing itself to the forefront of Sophia’s mind. ”What are you…?” Sophia was mostly whispering to herself now as she tried to imagine how a flower was able to talk. ”…magic?”

She wasn’t a stranger to magic, being a Witch herself. She had also witnessed reimancy before and knew of other God-given gifts that existed. No magic she was aware of could make a plant talk, granted, but then there must be so much more in the world that the Svefra just did not know about.

”I hope this seaweed stuff works.”
The plant’s next words bought her out of her thoughts and into the present again. Sophia quickly stood and looked at Kamillia again. ”Seaweed, right, yes.” She made to head for the steps out of Uta’s Place and down to the beach. The Svefra glanced expectantly at Kamilla, hoping the brunette would join her, and might even be willing to speak more about her curious plant now that it had revealed its true nature. Before they made their way down, Sophia grabbed a sack to collect the seaweed into and then proceeded along the path to the shore-front.

OOCSorry if this a little off, I don't think it's my best today, I'm very tired!

Kamilla Circe Gordon

Kamilla remained silent, for the most part, choosing instead to let the blonde’s mind run itself dry of whatever kinds of shock and surprise it was currently experiencing. It took a while, though she supposed it was not an u reasonable response, if anything it was somewhat understandable. Oftentimes she had to remind herself that Roo’s ‘condition’ was quite abnormal, even if she was completely desensitised to it.

Finally, Sophia’s mind seemed to settle on a single question, one that Kamilla had been anticipating. Was Roo magic? Honestly, she wasn’t sure herself, for all she knew, the plant could have come from a pjs e where it was completely natural for plants to talk and according to it, that was exactly the case, not that she could get the flower to tell her where this miraculous place was, though she suspected it didn’t know.

A nonchalant shrug was offered to the blonde, ”I’m not sure...” She began, looking over her shoulder at the hunched over flower, ”... I suppose that would make the most sense, though if I’m being honest, most things in this world are some kind of magic.” After all, there was djed in all things, though she figured that was beyond the Svefra’s understanding.

With Roo’s question, it seemed their quest was back on track, Sophia already turning to head towards the beach in search of the much needed seaweed. ”Roo, if anyone comes by, stay quiet please... and try not to cough too. We’ll be back as soon as we can.” With that, Kamilla turned to follow the Svefra as the duo walked toward the beach, all the while the mage said nothing, almost certain that the questions would begin soon.

Sophia nodded slowly at Kamilla’s words. To an extent, she supposed that most things were magic or at least had some sort of magic. She had no idea how any of it worked, but she knew deep in her heart that the gift she herself possessed was magic of a sort. So then the plants and animals too must also have it within them, for how would they be able to communicate with her? She had never thought too deeply about it before, for quite frankly it seemed far too much for her to comprehend. But now, after connecting more with her Goddess, and being confronted with Roo, perhaps she should start to try?

The Svefra led the way to the beach, winding along the path that led away from Uta’s Place. It didn’t take long till the pair found themselves on the sand, and Sophia got to work hunting for the driest, but still healthy looking, pieces of seaweed. She found a good specimen, and showed it to Kamilla so the other woman could see exactly what they were looking for. “The drier the seaweed is, the better.” Sophia reiterated her point from earlier. “But we want pieces that are as intact as you can find them.” This point was not something that Sophia really knew from experience, but she assumed that a healthier piece of seaweed would hold more nutrients than one that was damaged.

She worked in silence for a short while, meticulously checking each piece of seaweed she came across for signs of damage or disease. Everything she was happy with went into the sack she carried, and she would occasionally hold it out for Kamilla to place whatever she had picked up inside too.

Eventually, curiosity got the better of her again. “Kamilla… if you think that Roo is magic, do you have any idea how he is able to talk? I mean…” Sophia paused as she tried to think of how to word her question. Knowing little of magic herself, she didn’t have access to a great vocabulary on the subject. “…did somebody do it to him, or is it how he has always been?”

The Svefra frowned, mostly to herself. Even the simple act of trying to talk about magic was confusing, and this was just over a flower that could talk! “Sorry if I’m not making sense, I don’t really know that much about magic.” She offered up a small smile and a shrug. “I know about people who can control the elements… though I don’t quite know how that works… and that’s it really.” She failed to mention the glaringly obvious other magic she knew of, and the grasses on her arm almost appeared to sway harder in protest.
