Will Crylon enter the water? Part I

7 Fall 522

It was still early in the morning, and so Crylon had not yet risen for the day. Instead he was lazing about for a few moments as the sun rose and the sky brightened, while he decided on what he would do today.

There was no particular event going on, and so he had no particular plan to do anything. And while he was needed tomorrow for some work, today he had nothing to do. Perhaps he could go by the forge? Or just practice some skill.. Or... Or, or, he ran through a few ideas while pondering on what he should do, when he heard footsteps approaching from the other side of his tent.

Opening it up and poking his head out he saw a pair of men come to stop before his "door". One looked vaguely familiar, a human he had seen at the ten day, though not one he had talked to before or really been introduced to. The other... Well he had no idea who the other man was. Luckily they were quick enough to introduce themselves, the one man who looked familiar standing with a hand on the other mans shoulder. "Crylon, hello. I don't think we've been introduced, but I'm Duncan, the local Water Mage. And this is Kallin, a passing Svefra. It seems they are having a bit of trouble which might affect the settlement, and I hear your an Isur who is handy with a hammer. Would you mind coming along to help. If nothing else they will need a patch, but until we get there I am unsure what exactly will be needed. Sorry that its sudden, but this is kind of time sensitive."

With a nod Crylon rose, shorter than both of the men by around a foot or so, and grabbing a few things out of his tent. Namely his pack within which were numerous items he might need for making repairs. And while he did not have his fancier tools inside, those were inside of a separate trunk, he had his simpler building equipment inside which he could take out.

“Sure. Is fine do, happy come help. Am ready, show way and go now, if sensitive with time.”

With a grin the new Svefra Crylon did not know nodded and waved for the Isur to follow, leading along Duncan who seemed to be staying close by. He was unsure why, but was not overly concerned and it did not even occur to him to ask why he was moving as he was by the other man. Perhaps they were just friends, or it was some odd custom of the Svefra he did not know. Passing it on he shrugged. From what had been said he assumed the ship had hit something, and so they would have dragged it ashore to be repaired. He had seen Svefra before, and their boats ranged from small to big, but it seemed this one was a small one if only a few people could address the issue.

Of course if the ship had hit something it could be a danger to other ships, and so it would need to be cleared out of the way to avoid further accidents. He supposed that was where Duncan came in, if he was a Reimancer, calling himself a water mage, then he supposed he could either help stop the water entering the boat, and or break down the rock or whatever they had hit. Though he was curious what it was, as he had not heard of such a accident happening recently. Which either meant this ship was unlucky and the others lucky... Or, more likely, something new had appeared which had caused the accident.

Will Crylon enter the water? Part I

As the trio walked along Kallin and Duncan spoke, explaining what had happened. "We were just kind of moving along, close to the coast but not close enough to beach ourselves, but either the water was too shallow or... Well something. We hit it, and next thing we knew water was coming in and something was lodged in the side. Maybe a rock? Not sure. We tried to pull it free but couldn't get loose, so I came here while my brother Collin stayed with the Casinor. Our pod isn't that far, so we just need to get it free and patched well enough to meet them, for full repairs."

Crylon nodded along, nothing he was hearing overly surprising him, but still he put his own two copper mizas in.

“Have tools, for fix. You have supplies for make patch? If do, once bring ashore, can fix.”

The Svefra nodded, explaining things well enough, though it did not seem there was much for Crylon to do until after Duncan did his work. "Yeah, we keep some basic repair supplies on the boat, tools, nails, wood, the like, for small patches and things. Anything more and we will need to get help or more supplies, but I think we have enough for this sized hole."

Not being to far down the beach it was less than half a bell's walk at a good pace to reach their ship, Crylon seeing it just off the coast. Seeing the waters he shivered as if cold, unable to fight it at the sudden thought of going into the water... But no, he just needed to make repairs on the coast. Maybe his feet would get a bit wet, but that was it. Which was good because based on where the boat was it looked like it was deep enough water to reach his upper chest should he wade out that far... Though that was a rough estimate based on the main standing in the water to his mid or lower chest, who seemed to be similar in height to the Svefra walking with him. He stumbled a bit as a wave hit him, but then seeing the trio waved back. "Kallin, you brought people! Good! But I don't know if its a rock after all. I've been checking it, but it seems kind of wedged in, and not really rock shaped. I can't get a good grip though, its got stuff growing on it!"

Crylon, waiting on the shore with his feet dry watched as Duncan and Kallin waded out to the boat. After a few chimes Duncan seemed to try to do something, feeling around with his hands for a bit and then standing there for another few chimes. In the end he shook his head, before being led back to Crylon by Kallin. "Its no good, I think its some kind of metal object, not a rock after all. I could break up a rock, but not this. Maybe its an anchor or something? Although who the petch dropped an anchor off the shore near a settlement and then didn't say anything, well whoever those pieces of Shyke were they are probably long gone. "

Shaking his head in clear frustration Crylon understood his anger, after all it was bad enough something had dropped a dangerous object near the shore, but was even worse that they had just left it and said nothing. "Look Crylon, its not that far out. But your an Isur, right? You've got that arm. Maybe you could bend it or something, it doesn't seem to be steel or anything that tough, just iron. Could you go out and try and get it loose? If you can get it loose I can hold back the water long enough to move the ship, and then get it to shore with these guys. What do you say?"

With but a few words Crylon's stomach opened up a gaping hole, and he felt a coldness rise up from his toes even in Syka's growing heat as the sun increased height.

Will Crylon enter the water? Part I

Postby Crylon Stonecraft on September 24th, 2022, 9:17 pm

“Into... The water...”

Peering outward Crylon felt his legs lock into place, the familiar sense of fear washing over him more than any wave ever could. Water. Deep water. The ocean. Remembering the fear. Of thrashing. Of moving, and trying to get to clear air. Of not being able to breath, underneath the water pressing down on him... And that moment of mercy as he broke the surface... Images of such things rushed through him as he looked outward.

“I... Cannot... Cannot go into water. Is... Not thing can do.”

Clearly not understanding one of the Svefra brothers Call or Kall something, threw up his arms in consternation. "Look, its not even that deep, if you cannot swim I'll carry you! But You won't even need to! Just come out here, or we will be stuck. If you can help, you better petching do it!"

Duncan for his part seemed to be examining Crylon, or listening to him, or something, but perhaps more so than the Svefra brothers he sensed something in Crylon's voice. Even if his face was mostly calm, it was tense and his voice was unsteady. Before he had trouble finding the right words in common to be clear, but now it was the speaking that he was having trouble with. "Crylon, whats going on. Do you have some issue with water? I know I said before you would not need to go in but... Well things have changed, if we want to help them. So what is going on?"

Clearly uncomfortable Crylon moved about, unsure what to do with his hands and squeezing his normal hand a bit harder than he meant to with his special hand, something he had never done before by mistake. The sudden pain made him release his grip, and he looked out at Duncan who had at some point returned to the shore and was coming close to Crylon, speaking in a low calm voice.

“Yes. I... Have issue, with water... I... When young.. It was... I... Almost drown. I... Not go into water, any more. Nothing deep. Nothing deep so cannot see bottom or deep enough to... Go under... And then again, later, in other place, almost again. Water and me.. Not get along. I cannot go out into water.”

Speaking calmly Duncan placed a hand on Crylon's shoulder, look at him but not really looking at him. It was only then Crylon realized the mans eyes were not quite right. He had not noticed before, though it did make more sense as to why he had been led out by the Svefra on the way here... "Crylon, I understand. You have a fear of water, of deep water, which the ocean certainly counts as. But at the end of the day, we cannot progress without some help. And it seems you are the only one here who can help. I know I am asking a lot, and I cannot imagine being afraid of water... But if you do not help I do not know when this will be resolved. And it also would be a danger to the settlement, meaning others or other ships might be hurt as well... So... Is there any way you can overcome your fear, just for a bell... To help us here. I will help you in whatever way you want. But we really need to get this done."

Looking up the man did seem to understand, or was trying to, and took Crylon's words seriously unlike the Svefra. But Crylon was unsure... Could he... Would he... Be able to go into water? Honestly he was unsure how.

Will Crylon enter the water? Part I

Postby Crylon Stonecraft on September 24th, 2022, 9:48 pm

Taking a deep breath, Crylon tried to calm himself. Holding it in his chest, and then slowly letting it out. Calm. He tried to push away such thoughts of the water, or anything negative about it, and instead tried to focus his mind. What was he going to do?

Could he do it, was not the question he was asking himself. Would he do it? Capability was not in question, he reasoned out. Clearly he could do it, as all of these people had just done it easily enough... Which just left the question, would he do it... That, he found, was much harder.

However as he opened his eyes and looked out the familiar dread seeped back in as he saw the water. At once he felt fear, but also shame. Shame that such a simple fear others did not have would hold him back so much. Fear was not the problem, but letting it control him... That, was the problem. And he did not want to let some feeling he had control what he would or would not do. Reaching out a hand, his normal non special one for fearing of gripping too tightly, he took one of Duncans hands.

“I... Will try... But could you... Stay with me.”

The water mage simply nodded, looking back over the water, as he took a step closer. Crylon took a step along with him, feeling the dread increase the closer he got to the water. And then one more step, growing right up to the point were the sand grew wet. Pulling in a deep breath he tried to hold it, pushing as best he could at the fear. But as he willed his leg to move, closing his eyes, he felt the wetness go over his bare feet. Somehow though the not seeing made it worse, and his eyes snapped back open to watch the incoming waves. There he paused, barely in half an inch of water, a bit more only when a wave came crashing in. "Just stay calm Crylon, I am right here. Okay? Just keep moving. Slowly, but surely. Alright?"

Crylon nodded, unable to speak, his jaw clenched shut. Like a bear running down a mountain slope at him he felt the fear coming at him, yet in another way it was like the ocean and coming in endless waves...

Letting out another breath he pulled in a bit of air and took one more step, a bit deeper. Feeling the heft of the air increasing, hot breath coming stronger and fiercer as he tried to force himself along. Now the water was up to his ankles, not really into the water truly but edging ever closer... But he did not want to let his fear control him, and even if he could not stop feeling the fear he could still move past it... Along with it... Regardless of it...

Tensing for a moment he shifted himself, and tried to take one more step, this one a proper one deeper into the water. Like a churning frothing sea his breathing came in and out, increasing with each step he took. And then his entire body tensed as he took a step forward and he felt the water rush up to his calf as a wave came in, bits splashing up as it struck him and hitting his face.

Will Crylon enter the water? Part I

Postby Crylon Stonecraft on September 24th, 2022, 10:11 pm

At some point as he moved forward, Crylon lost track of his steps. Five? Ten? Thirty? He could see the boat drawing slowly closer, could feel the air rushing in and out of his chest... But oddly he felt numb, only feeling the fear and nothing else. And yet, somehow he was still moving, in this moment overcoming that fear. In truth he still felt just as afraid, and did not think this meant he would happily go skipping into water in the future... But at the same time, he felt it was a sign he was as a person growing, as he in this single moment overcame his fear, even if only for a short while. Though tomorrow... Well that was another story entirely.

In the moment he felt focused entirely on one thing, the boat he was approaching. It needed to be done, they were right. If not now, then when? Nothing else seemed important. Perhaps then it was that focus on a single task that was allowing him to move through the fear if not overcoming it truly...

Slowly as he moved he felt the water get higher. Up to his thighs. Up to his waist. Then it starting hitting his torso... And still they were not there, something that sent another momentary surge of panic that took him a good chime of focus to be able to will his legs to move again... Instead he focused on something else, the words he chanted in his head... Not that much farther... Not that much deeper... Almost there... Not that much farther. Over and over, repeating, assuring and assuaging himself.

Finally as the water got to his upper chest and was nearly to his shoulders, they reached their destination. Grabbing onto the side of the boat Crylon finally released Duncan's hand, moving both to clutch onto the ship. And then moved along, sliding over along the side... At this point he had completely forgotten about the two Svefra brothers, unsure if they had spoken or if he had simply not heard them.

Along the side of the boat he moved, his normal hand on the rim and his special handling feeling around for the issue. Seeing the point where it oddly dipped and was stuck he moved closer. And the his hand slipped along the side of the boat to the break, a puncture in the wood. And inside something... Well clearly metal, at least a long time ago. More so he was surprised whatever it was had held together as well as it had, for it clearly was old and worn. Not something new. Not perhaps an anchor then?

Feeling around he realized it seemed to have branches, not just being one solid piece. Perhaps why Duncan had thought it was an ahchor. It kind of reminded him of one in shape, but was not like any anchor he had seen. Finding a thin point Crylon gripped it in his special Isurian grip, and squeezed. And then squeeze some more, clenching his hand like a vice and twisting while his other hand held his position on the boat. After a few more moments he felt a shifting, and then something snapped. As it did he felt the entire thing break apart into different chunks, falling into the water. As soon as that happened the hole was unclogged, and more water came rushing in. It was at that moment Duncan moved forward, having been preparing by Crylon's side, beginning to do some sort of magic to hold the water out...

Crylon did not care, and was not paying much attention to what the mage did. Instead the moment he was sure he was done... He fled. Turning and moving back the other way Crylon moved along he bed, moving with a frenzy towards the shore. Using both hands to pull himself and keep balance while rushing towards dry land. In far quicker a time than it had taken him to go out, he was quickly back in. Once he hit the shore he kept going, past the wet sand, and a good ten feet past the dryness of the beach where no waves came before finally collapsing in a heap while shaking.

Will Crylon enter the water? Part I

Postby Crylon Stonecraft on September 24th, 2022, 10:39 pm

At some point after his mad rush to shore, Crylon realized he was laying on the sand and someone was above him. His back was sitting a few feet away on the ground, dry, though he did not entirely recall taking it off earlier before going into the water. Wait had he? Or had it dried out... Distracted by such thoughts it took him a few moments to realize Duncan was talking to him. "Crylon. Crylon! Are you okay! Oh, good, your moving, you have been sitting their almost half a bell! I was getting worried."

After finishing speaking Duncan dropped a bag full of metal parts, clearly the pieces of whatever had been stuck in the ship which Crylon had broken. Looking it over it was clearly weathered by water, but he had no idea what it was. Neither, it seemed, did Duncan. "Yeah best I can guess either someone dumped it, or it washed up from deeper out. Looks pretty old, but honestly its hard to tell. Its so broken I don't even know what it could have been, and it looks like its only a part of whatever it was before..."

Looking it over Crylon felt around on it, moving the parts, but he had no idea what it could have been.

“Not sure either... But... Think... Am doing better. Now that... Out of water... But... Don't think want do again, for long time.”

With a smile Duncan nodded, gesturing over at the water. This brought Crylon's attention to the sea, and the boat. At some point while he was insensate the others had brought the boat partially ashore, holding it such that the hole in the side was above water and could be worked on without going into the water. "Whenever your ready, come on over, and we will get them patched. No need to go back into the water, alright?"

Crylon nodded, sitting for a bit and looking out at the water, just letting the sight wash over him. He still had no desire to go out again, and was honestly surprised he had lasted so long today. If nothing else his shaking had decreased, and his breathing had calmed down. His memory though was a bit hazy. But he did not think he had actually paused out at any point, still being awake the entire time, just simply... Out of it.

While he sat one of the Svefra brothers came over, holding a small case. Crylon thought had entirely forgotten his name, as well as his brothers, and was not even sure which was which as they looked so similar. "Hey, its Crylon, right? I saw what happened. Sorry about our yelling at you earlier to hurry up. I think we both see now how serious a fear the ocean was for you. But you helped anyways. So thank you for helping, especially when it took so much to go in. Ah, no rush on the patch, alright. We can get it started. But uh, I wanted to say thanks in a more tangible way, after all you did to help us. It means a lot, and so I want to give you this."

Holding out the small case and opening it, within was revealed a small flute. It was made of metal and looked small and fragile, but was well made. "Its something our grandmother collected a long, she always told storied about it. She still has its pair, but this one she gave to me and my brother. She always said a Svefra should pay their debts, and when someone really helps you then you should make sure to make it right. So... I would like you to have this. I think she said it was special in some way, but she never really went into detail or said where she got them... But, I would like you to have it. As a gift for your help. Thank you, once again."

With a nod Crylon took the offered flute, thanking the man for the gift and looking at the thing closely. However he soon found his feet and placed the flute safely within his pack to examine later, knowing he needed to head off and help these guys with patching their boat.
