Treasures of the Sea

Nestled between the trade shop and the general store sits a small wooden two story building. The only shop in Zeltiva not made of granite; it stands out like an Akalak on the Konti isle. A small unassuming sign outside meekly names the shop "Treasures of the Sea".

When sailors arrive in Zeltiva for trade they often bring back trinkets from distance lands, odds and ends collected along the way, all these items end up at Raleaph's shop.

Treasures boasts a large assortment of junk. Everything ranging from copper pots and pans full of dents to baby rattles made of bone. You could find just about any thing at Treasures; if you aren't looking for.

The owner will tell you that every item has a story; a wonderful history that exists beyond the reaches of time and space. The good news to ease the nervous traveler is that these stories are rarely true. As soon as a customer picks up even the most unassuming piece of scrap Raleaph will be off telling a sweeping epic involving witches, evil wizards and trees that dance in the breeze. Child like wonder shines behind big brown eyes. He has such an innocence that the customer cannot help but buy the most precious item that they now hold in their hands.

Who knows. maybe behind the useless trinkets something real and valuable may surface just when you need it most...

NPC :
Raleaph

Raleaph is a strange human, mysterious and ever smiling. His eyes sparkle with good humor and child like wonder. He loves to tell sweeping tales of fantastical proportions and if you ask him where is from he will tell you a different story from season to season.

One of his favorite stories to tell is that he once passed through a Qamur and spent a good deal of time there, his punishment for trespassing would be to live forever; to never age and to never become ill, he would live completely unchanged for eternity.

He has been running this little shop for well over 20 years and the citizens find themselves entertaining whispers that he doesn't look a day older than the first day he appeared smiling on the docks.

Aquila was walking around Zeltiva in her Myrian form since it was smack down in the middle of the day. Not a cloud was to be spotted in the sky and she was starting to sweat like crazy, fortunately for her she was wearing a lightbeige summerdress or she would have vaporized.

She tried to relativate her situation and remember that there were, supposedly, places in Mizahar where the sun scorched the soil and anything inbetween with a blistering heat. She tried to be happy that she wasn't born near such a place but it was hard to focus. Sweat was making its way over her face and frequently she had to wipe it away.

She was on her way to the general store of Zeltiva but before she arrived she stopped at the only building in town that seemed to have some individualistic spirit in it. There was a board hanging outside indicating that inside there were " Treasures Of The Sea ".

' Wow! ' She thought to herself as she stood in front of the house. She wasn't fully certain it was a shop so she was unsure whether she should enter it or not, but the door was open and eventhough she couldn't really see what was inside, curiousity got the better of her and she entered the mysterious building.

What she's looking forI'd love it if there was some sort of "staff" available to buy, sorta like a friar's staff for nonfatal melee combat but hopefully a bit unique in a way. ^^

Raleaph's head jerked up as he heard the door of his shop bang open. A wide smile painted its way across his face and soon his teeth shone brightly behind his lips. Well...well...well...What do we have here? he said in a low steady voice. Popping up from behind his counter top Raleaph took a good hard look at the girl now standing in the door way: A tanned beauty with ebony hair and strong looking arms.

Slowly he made his way around the counter and extended an eager hand her way.
And what do they call you beautiful? Raleaph made a small kissy face at the woman and thrust his heads towards the shelves lining the wall. Care to have a look at my wares?

[Location] Treasures of the Sea

Postby Avari on November 21st, 2011, 7:03 pm

Season of Fall, Day 80, 511 AV

One did not visit Treasures of the Sea because one was looking for something specific that one wanted to buy. With its large quantities of knickknacks, odds and ends, and secondhand flotsam from ocean voyages or from the sea itself on sale, the shop's wares were as unpredictable and ever-changing as the moods of the wind and sea. One generally visited Treasures to laugh over the fantastic tales Raleaph would weave about each item; to rummage through the shelves, hangers, and cabinets of jumbled rubbish in hopes of finding something rare and precious; to sell their own oddments for a few mizas; and sometimes out of pure curiosity.

On this particular fall afternoon, Avari had just suffered a depressing and unproductive day at the docks and the Fish Market. The prosperous-looking merchant's sloop she'd been planning to investigate today turned out to have left port a day ago. Then, the fat purse dangling from the belt of an equally fat and fatuous-looking matron, who barely seemed to notice as Avari delicately tugged it free, was loaded not with mizas, but with common pebbles and rocks; clearly it'd been a decoy meant to confuse people like her. The Konti was trudging gloomily back home, when she spied the humble sign in front of Treasures of the Sea and decided to stop in and buy herself a little something to cheer herself up.

She opened the worn wooden door and surveyed the interior with the familiarity of a frequent visitor. They still hadn't sold the mounted, stuffed marlin, she noted. It had been there for at least a fortnight, collecting dust as it stared forlornly from its wall with empty eyes. Feeling silly as she did so, Avari gave it a small wave of encouragement as she passed by.

Avari wandered on, deeper into the shop. She glanced once at the bookshelves, which were crammed as usual with cast-off volumes from university students and itinerant sailors alike. Most of them were old textbooks or logbooks of sea voyages, but once she'd heard that a friend of a friend had discovered a priceless tome of pre-Valterrian poetry in those musty shelves. She thought briefly of flicking through the books on sale, but the tables covered in colorful trinkets appealed to her more this time.

Her eyes roved over the jumbled miscellany with the deliberation of someone trying to finding value in seemingly valueless things. Raleaph was a master at it, while she was a mere beginner. She'd often thought the quirky, good-humored shopkeeper would've made a fine thief, if only because he always knew how to turn a profit from his shop full of "treasures" and how to find the perfect, special item that his customer desired.

At the same time, Avari didn't need more competition. Perhaps it was a good thing that Raleaph stuck to shopkeeping and not larceny.

After a few minutes of letting her eyes meander aimlessly over the assorted objects on sale, Avari raised an eyebrow when she spotted a string of brightly-painted wooden beads, on which a woven pouch was strung. Taken by its vivid colors and novelty, she lifted the string of beads and experimentally wrapped it around her wrist, about her upper arm, and then around her neck. The string of beads fit neatly around the base of her neck, with the woven pouch resting upon her collarbone. Avari fingered the pouch; it was too small to carry more than a handful of mizas, though it was perfect for keeping something secure and almost impossible to steal.

What did she own that was small and valuable enough? The answer came to her immediately: her dice.

A moment later, with the string of beads still tied around her neck, Avari was striding up to the counter where Raleaph waited, having made up her mind to buy the small treasure she had found. "Hello again, Raleaph," she greeted him offhandedly. "Good to see you. Don't worry, I'm here this time to buy, not to sell and haggle," she added with a wry smile. "How much for these beads?"

81st day of Fall 511 AV

Zeltiva it smelled of the stinky sea and of home...because it was Bob's home even after he had left it for years. Once he arrived at the docks the first thing he saw was the welcoming sight of the Treasures of the Sea sticking out like a sore thumb. While he was still around as a youth he loved coming to the shop and admiring all the interesting things that he could not buy because he lacked the funds. That was then, and now is now. Just like a chance to relieve that fun age he entered the shop looking as always what Raleaph had for the day but this time with the full intention of walking out with something nice to show for it.

Nothing in particular had his attention because as always he had a hard enough time looking at them all. Bob fingered some cheap knick-knacks and trinkets like glass necklaces made by those bird people and talismans from the savages in the jungle continent. Then he looked through some books quickly flipping through the pages only to put them back because they were "boring..." If he wanted something like that he would be better off checking out the university again. A few other things like family treasures and heirlooms forced to be sold to make ends meet like jewelry and accessories but then Bob found that something he really wanted. Snatching it before anyone could beat him to it he looked through all the cards of the deck to see just how well done the illustrations are. If there was anything to say about the deck as hinted by the design of the box and the pictures on the cards, they were indeed well drawn just that the theme was a little bit...depressing and suggestive but it did not matter to Bob because he always laughs at the face of death because crying would only make him die faster.

Heading up to the counter to show the deck he asked if Raleaph wpuld "maybe you remember me or maybe you don't but I have come here as a paying customer today so it is a pretty important day. Maybe you could give a discount for the occasion?" It was a joke of course but it will not hurt if Raleaph actually agreed. A deck of cards like this was good and all for a gambler who lived based on luck just as the twins had saved his life so Bob would ask Raleaph "is there any other interesting things that you might have? Something that I might have missed in the front or special things you keep at the back?" The customer today with the rat skull on his cane might suggest that he liked to collect strange things or, with the snowglobe of one of Sunberth's attractions he took out to show as an example when he told the shopkeeper "like this", interesting curiosities.

It was then that Bob felt that there was some sort of a connection between him and the man. One that he has never experienced himself before. As to what it would mean it took him a few moments to realize that "we seem to share some mutual friends?" Friend would not be a suitable way to describe people that he only met once but the twins did save his life and ever since then Bob always wanted someone that "would you tell me more about them?" so that he could perhaps understand their motives and return the favor. The Barton's have a saying which seem to have originated a long time ago if the pages in the book were in order that "a debt good or bad can never be considered a victory." Staying true to that Bob wanted to clear it with them just so that he may live out the rest of his life without being burdened by the possibility of suddenly being asked to pay up especially from a much more powerful person.

Summer 7 512 AV

Ray wasn’t one to go shopping. No he didn’t like giving away his miza, or even trading it for services because miza was the equivalent of power and he was running low on the tangible power. Though there was a chance that if something was truly interesting or unique that he could spare some of this gold for the said item. He was, in other words, a window shopper with tight purse strings, and today the nuit was just wandering the city of Zeltiva with no goal in mind. Might as well browse the stores, but he really had nothing he wanted to get.

Without much gold left a particular shop caught his eye. No, not for the wares on display from the windows, or rather the eloquent style of building, no not that either. In fact it was what made it different that made the nuit stop. Either it was a genius way of attracting attention or the shop was barely making it; not having the funds to build a proper building. Whatever it is, it drew attention and made the nuit curious as to what laid inside.

“Treasures of the Sea” is what the sign said, it looking just as good as the shop. Interested, the nuit opened the door and walked in. The shop was cluttered with odds and ends, objects that would have no place in any other store, or were just seemingly worthless, were present here. The wares were as interesting as the store itself. Taking a few steps in, the nuit began looking around before giving a short nod the shopkeeper.

No one else was in here, and he was looking for nothing particular, but something drew his attention. Something odd looking, was that bones? The nuit walked over and started to investigate.

Raleaph looked at the man who had entered. He seemed to be interested in some bones, and Raleaph, with a childish grin, immediately walked over to him.

"These here are the precious leg bones of a grand cheetah," he explained with enthusiasm. His eyes sparkled as his mind conjured up a story. "They were brought here by a witch, you see. Said they were a curse to them, how exactly, I do now know. She said that the animal had been one of the first in the Kelvic line, can you believe that? But look at it... it would make for some good armor. If you wish to purchase it, I shall sell it to you for seventy-five golden mizas. Such a low price for a precious heritage."

The shopkeeper didn't know if this man before him would even believe such a story. Truth be told, these bones were just something some hunters had brought in. However, bringing down a cheetah was not an easy feat. He had thrown out an overpriced number, but the times were hard, and he was going to try his luck. Raleaph wouldn't contest to some haggling, but he wouldn't let the bones go cheaply as well.

He went to investigate the bones. They were, yes leg bones, but more specifically they were the Femur and HumerusRayage doesn’t know the bone names, but I decided I would name them off so I know what Im buying. If you want to change them feel free to. Just thought I would name the specific bones.. He just about touched them when he was interrupted by the man, the owner of the shop, who started telling Ray a nice little story on the origin of the bones.

”Cursed and expensive?” he asked, ”What kind of fool would buy a cursed item for seventy five gold miza?” he asked, ”Look at it” he said gesturing over the bones, ”Not even the whole skeleton.” he said, sounding a bit disappointed about that fact. For if indeed the story was true, then the skeleton itself might be worth that much, but Ray had no intention of being ripped off. So, lets start low.

”How about five gold miza a bone?” he asked, going that low to test the waters. He had a plan. ”That is ten gold miza.” he said, picking up the two bones, ”And if they truly are cursed I would be taking a risk, especially since you don’t know exactly what they do. Besides, you should know as well as I that one can never trust a witch. She might have lost her mind.” he said, using the story he was told to his advantage; keeping an ever serious look on his face.

The shopkeeper's story backfired at him. He doubted this man actually believed they were cursed, although he used the story to his advantage.

Raleaph shook his head. "A curse to one may be a blessing to others. There are those who say it is a curse to live forever, but I disagree. Who knows what curse the witch was talking about, then, and if it was truly a curse? Five a bone is a steal. Fourty gold mizas for both of them and I'll let it go. "

Ray listened to what the shop had to say and laughed in his heas, "A curse is called a curse for a reason, and I thought you didnt know how they were cursed." he said, taking the new added effect as a sign that he was just making a story.

"Thirty gold miza." he said. "And you will have these bones so kindly taken from your possession. Who knows what they really do." he said jesting and rolling the curse idea over in his head, what if this fool was right? It was a laughable concept.
