I am reading the Codex Alera series for the second time by Jim Butcher. It is a really intricate world, that is different then most fantasy. Magic is not really "Magic" as fantasy novels tend to depict but rather the bending of natural forces to one's will. Its characters are rich, and when I finished the series the first time I was so disappointed to finish, as I wanted to keep going on with the tale of Tavi and his cohorts.

Jim Butcher is a newer author, in so much as I haven't seen much from him before the last ten years or so. But he is promising.

Series: His Dark Materials - Philip Pullman
It's a teen lit series, I know. But I am unashamed to admit that it is by far my favorite series of all time. It is the one book I go back to time and time again to convince myself that reading is a frickn' magical pastime and to keep wading through the mediocre muck to find such lovely, imaginative jewels. Be warned, it has some spicy atheist subtext is you're sensitive about that.

Series: Notre Dame de Paris - Victor Hugo
This monster of a series is 11 books long and took me over a year and a half to finish. I’m guessing you know the story, but this is not the Disney version. It's really dark and heart wrenching, and I don’t think I’ll ever forgive the author for what he did to all his beautiful characters at the end. :((

The Crimson Petal and the White - Michel Faber
It’s a story about a prostitute, a businessman, a priest, a lady, and a charity worker in 1900th century London. I’ve never seen such vividly real characters in my life. Even the book itself is a character. Read the first page and you’ll be hooked, I guarantee it.

And here I was thinking I was well read before this thread! It looks like I’ma need to do some serious reading

But here are the books I read… I read a lot of series

Single
The Host - Stephenie Meyer (The movie wasn’t all that great in my opinion, but I really enjoyed the book)
Memoirs of a Geisha - Arthur Golden (a wonderful book)

Series
The Blood Of The Lamb Trilogy - Mandy Hager (Seriously. best read ever. Very emotional.)
Wind on Fire Trilogy - William Nicholson(Very good books. I’m in the process of re-reading them)
The Hunger games - Suzanne Collins (-puts on hipster glasses- Read them before they were mainstream)
Percy Jackson - Rick Riordan (Love, love, love these books. )
The Golden Compass - Philip Pullman (Particularly enjoy the second one)The Very Hungry Caterpillar - by Eric Carle (Put this one in for a joke. But it WAS my fave children’s book! xD)
A Series of Unfortunate Events - Lemony Snicket (Read every single one of them… must read them again)
Uglies (Uglies, Pretties, Specials and Extra's)- Scott Westerfeld (I know it doesn’t sound appealing, but it’s a wonderful look into the society of the future! One of the best Sci-fi series I’ve ever read. Extra’s is one of my favourites)
Ashes Trilogy - Ilsa J. Bick (only ever read the first one, because I didn’t realise it was a Trilogy. Silly me)
Tomorrow when the War Began - John Marsden
Dragon keeper series - carole wilkinson

This is all I have in me for now, but there are so many more I just can’t think of for the life of me xD

I think The Giver would be good read even though it's a children's novel. It's by Lois Lowry. Also Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Both are Singles.
