A Book Thread

Postby Lorelai Stormwatcher on September 14th, 2013, 7:18 am

We got into quite a lengthy discussion in chat about literature. I know as role-players, a lot of us are well read, and it would be awesome if the rest of us could benefit from the learning each of us has had. I am going to start with the list I got from chat, and we will continue building the list from there. I am going to try and keep this first thread up to date with everything suggested. My Words | Your Words | Myrian | Fratavan | My Thoughts
Razkar has been cursed by Yahal, and as such finds little acceptance from others; they will instinctively view him as being deceptive and traitorous. However, when close to one blessed by Yahal, the effect is negated. The curse is etched onto his left pectoral, and viewing the mark causes others to feel dirty and unclean.

Night Angel Trilogy: Brent Weeks
-The Way of Shadows
-Shadows Edge
-Beyond the Shadows

Wretched Aura: As a Wretched One Evalin possesses an unnatural aura about her that causes unease in those who get too close. It can come as a prickle of the hair on the back of the neck, a sense of 'wrongness' about her. How people experience it is different depending on their personality and how they handle the unnatural and unknown. Animals tend to become more agitated, more easily sensing how wrong Evalin is and often avoiding contact with her.

Single books:

Gödel, Escher, Bach
I am a Strange Loop
(Both by Douglas Hofstadter. Seriously, read them. It will be rather enlightening.)
The Problems of Philosophy (Bertrand Russell)
Ulysses (James Joyce) (A monster of a book. It'll take you months to even understand part of it if you're a normal person, but it's worth it. I think.)
Der Antichrist
Also sprach Zarathustra: Ein Buch für Alle und Keinen
Ecce Homo
(Above by Friedrich Nietzsche. My "favourite" philosopher. Personally, I believe the idea that "God is dead" has affected me the most.)
The Three Musketeers
The Count of Monte Cristo
(The classics. Alexander Dumas.)

Series:

Keys to the Kingdom (Garth Nix) (A refreshing read after the heavy tomes and incunabula above. Might be a little childish though.)
His Dark Materials (Philip Pullman) (This is most enchanting. But if you're religious, especially if you're a Christian, some content may offend you. Especially the death of 'God'.)
Chronicles of Narnia (C.S. Lewis) (Need I say any more? I especially like the concept of the Shadowlands - pretty much Plato's Cave. I'm looking at you, Razkar! The Republic!)
Books of the Cthulhu Mythos (Read the ones by Lovecraft first.)

Special mention:
Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth (Graphic Novel)

An extremely enjoyable, if disturbing, read.

So you can probably guess what I'm like - a bit of everything.
