Out On the Town (Alija)

Not Mistress. Alija. You don't have a mistress, or master anymore. It is illegal in Zeltiva," the woman, apparently Alija, said. Seeing Kerra's confusion, the smiling woman elaborated, "It isn't allowed. The only mistress you can have is yourself."

Indeed, that did confuse Kerra. How could she not have an owner? Only people didn't have owners, and Kerra didn't really qualify as a person in her opinion. The Kelvic way happy regardless, though. Alija was pleased with her, and that pleased Kerra.

Confusion clouded the Kelvic's expression once again as Alija allowed her to pick her own name. That was strange, for certain. Kerra didn't really see much need for a name, except for the benefit of others. She knew who she was, after all. Still, apparently Alija wanted that, so Kerra just nodded in obedience.

The woman's gaze followed up and down the Kelvic as Alija suddenly recalled Kerra's nudity. Without a word, she led the girl into a store and began ordering clothing. All the while, Kerra was looking about in confusion. Clothes? New, and for her? That was surprising. Kerra usually got cast-offs, if she got anything at all. She hoped they weren't uncomfortable, like they usually were. She hated the way cloth stuck to her and hampered her movements. Then again, with the cold weather she figured she would just have to bear it. When out on the town, at least.

While the shopkeeper and Alija were talking, Kerra loosened her owner's--Her...friend's?--cloak to allow warm air to flow about her. She could barely feel her hands or feet, and her hair did little to keep her warm. If not for the necessity of speaking, the Kelvic would have long since reverted to her feline form.

Every now and again, someone would look at Kerra, look away, then snap their eyes back to her in surprise. It made her uncomfortable; she was used to crowds from her time in communal cages, but she still didn't like being the object of scrutiny. She wasn't certain why they looked at her, though.

The Kelvic began paying attention again as Alija held the clothes out for her. Had her attention wandered? She supposed it had. The slave took the offered clothing, looking at it all in surprise. "I won't, Alija. Thank you!" She said with a bright smile in the woman's direction. She didn't really like clothes, but they were a gift from the woman. No one had ever bought her new clothes before...Or much of anything, for that matter. Alija. It was a nice name, and Kerra was glad she was allowed to use it.

A moment later, the Kelvic returned to her study of the clothing. She allowed Alija's cloak to slip off her shoulders without thinking, forgetting that it was, in fact, someone else's. Now, how exactly did she put all this on? Kerra had only ever worn knee-length dresses. They were easier to make and didn't exactly have to fit very well to serve their purpose. Easier to put on, too. Or be stuffed into, when she took them off. These garments were alien to her.

The Kelvic sat down on the wooden floor and placed the clothes beside her. She spread them out to get a good look at each and identify them. One clearly was a shirt like what most people she saw wore, and another seemed like the bottom of a dress, but divided. Pants? Was that what they were called? Kerra had always wondered about that.

The slave tried to put the boots on first. She winced a few times trying to shove her feet into them, entirely unused to wearing shoes. They felt strange and uncomfortable...And not much good to her chilled feet either. Kerra heard someone in the store stifling a laugh at her expense when she tried to push her shod feet through the pant legs, and the Kelvic made a vexed noise. That wouldn't work.

Taking the shoes off took less time than putting them on, and Kerra soon managed to get the pants on...after much frustration. They were too tight on the Kelvic, and not because they didn't fit. It bothered her deeply to have cloth constantly on her legs, though she had no doubt it would be warmer. Next came the shirt, and Kerra had that in place much more quickly. It was like pulling on a very short dress.

Now mostly dressed, though barefoot, the Kelvic looked at the boots again and then pleadingly up at Alija. She didn't want to seem ungrateful, but those boots didn't look at all comfortable. Her feet wouldn't be that cold... "Alija?" She asked hopefully. Kerra would do as she was told, but that didn't mean she'd like it...Or that she boots might not mysteriously vanish sometime in the next few days.

Alija watched, laughing to herself, as the girl struggled to put the clothing on. She had put the boots on first, and was now struggling to pull the pants on over them. Alija heard someone stifle a laugh, and shot them a look. It wasn't the girl's fault that she wasn't used to wearing clothes. Alija didn't doubt that she preferred not to, but she knew walked around naked in the middle of winter would be mad.

She had taken the boots off, and was now struggling with the pants. Alija restrained the urge to let out a giggle, and let her figure it out, before slipping on the shirt. She rose, now dressed, but barefoot. The girl glanced at the boots lying discarded beside her.
"Alija?" she asked hopefully, glanced at her feet, and then the boots. The lady smiled, picking them up. The poor girl must find them strange and uncomfortable. She nodded in agreement, before knotting the laces together, and slinging them over her shoulder. If she did change her mind, Alija would be ready.

They strolled out the shop, Alija unsure what to do next. Did the girl need anything? Maybe she should just let her run free. Alija had a feeling that the girl wouldn't leave her in this strange unknown city, not yet. Then again, she barely knew her. Alija debated whether or not to ask her any questions about her personality, taking in to account that the girl was too passive, at least to her. Maybe she would have some useful skills. Alija didn't want to push her onto a job, but knew that she couldn't pay for her upkeep. Help perhaps, but the whole thing...

"Are you good at anything? Perhaps singing or dancing?" she asked, unsure of it, "Do you have any skills?" Alija trudged along, trying to think up something to help the Kelvic. "I don't really want to push you, but you'll have to get some sort of a job. Maybe an apprenticeship. I honestly don't know. I'll help as much as I can, but I can't support you. Not now. Sorry."
For a second she felt terrible. She had taken this girl out of her normal life, forcing her to be her own mistress and to get a job. She shook those thoughts away; she had done the right thing, nothing more nothing less.
She hoped .

Out On the Town (Alija)

Postby Kerra on December 10th, 2014, 1:37 am

Kerra felt an unfamiliar sensation as her cheeks turned bright red from embarrassment and, surprisingly, shame as Alija laughed at her (Or so she thought); she knew she must look like an idiot, struggling to put shoes on. The laughter of others didn't bother Kerra; she didn't know those people. Alija, however, was another matter. They'd only just met, and the woman was being so nice to her. Buying her things, no less! The Kelvic didn't know a lot, but she knew how much people valued their money.

Kerra had never been treated like this before, and she found it thoroughly enjoyable to have someone actually enjoying her presence enough to let her tag along with them. Most importantly, Kerra didn't want to embarrass Alija with her naivete. That was what made her blush. Fortunately, from the look on Alija's face, she was simply amused and didn't seem to think less of the Kelvic. That made her feel better rather quickly.

The Kelvic gave Alija a grateful smile as the nice lady retrieved the boots. Good; she wasn't disappointed in the Kelvic. The former slave quickly stood to her feet as Alija moved toward the door, keeping to Alija's heels after gathering up the woman's cloak and her own.

Blue eyes studied Alija's back as they walked, the Kelvic noticing the cold street only in passing. She had so much protection from the elements now, and she hadn't even put on her own cloak yet. She did that in short order as she remembered it, enjoying the shelter from the wind...Though being inside certainly beat it.

"Alija, your cloak," the Kelvic said as she picked up speed to walk alongside Alija, offering the lady her cloak. Blue eyes stared up at Alija with affection that seemed halfway between fondness and plain adoration. Alija wasn't the only one growing attached, it seemed.

Alija was right; Kerra didn't really have the ability to answer questions about her personality. She was barely two seasons old, by her reckoning, and most Kelvics were not very mature by then. Kerra least of all, considering her upbringing. She was something of a slate, ready to be molded however chance--or others--decided. As it was, the Kelvic was much like a kitten; mischievous and innocent, though eager to please.

The mention of a "job" caused Kerra's eyebrows to knit together in confusion. Job...?

"I can't support you. Not now. Sorry."

Oh! So she needed to earn her keep. That made the Kelvic's eyes widen in understanding, and she gave a nod. It was normal to be expected to work. Kerra had had one owner who had bought her for work, after all. She...just hadn't stuck with it very well. When asked about skills, however, the former slave seemed somewhat perplexed. She couldn't recall much that she knew how to do... She'd not done much worth anything, in her life.

Not wanting to disappoint Alija, but helpless to lie to the woman, Kerra answered unhappily, "No... What should I do?" Naturally, Kerra turned to Alija for advice, since she had already helped the Kelvic so much.

"Alija, your cloak," the girl said, passing it over. Alija took the warm cloth, wrapping it around her shoulders. She nodded a thanks, noting the affection in the bright blue eyes, thankful her feelings were being reflected. She pulled the Kelvic close to her, desperate not to lose her on the busy streets.

When she mentioned job, the girl wrinkled her forehead, and Alija suddenly felt extremely bad. The girl was confused about having to get a job - she expected that Alija would take her in as she had the money to! All of a sudden, she suddenly seemed to understand it all, nodding. Perhaps just the word job was unkown to her, but the concept of work wasn't. Alija didn't want to push her to it, but had to.

However, she knew of no skills that she had learnt. Why should she, a former slave? Alija sighed, unable to help. The girl was asking for advice, and she had none to give. She didn't know her well enough to help.

"Perhaps... you could be a shop assistant. They don't need to know much, do they? Or a waitress at a bar? No, you're too young. Maybe.." she was stumped. Getting a job for herself was easy: she knew what she was good at, she knew what her passion was. Perhaps that was it. Perhaps she had to find out what the girl was passionate about. She doubted that the Kelvic would have much to say, but it was worth a try.
"We could always ask the people at the office, but maybe you do know, just don't know that you know. Are you interested in anything? Want to learn something? Does anything intrigue you, fascinate you, entice you?"

Alija had no idea what else to say. If the girl didn't have a good answer, she would not be any more help. Alija just didn't know the Kelvic. Maybe it would be easier if it were the other way round.
"Ask me questions. Ask anything. Skills, hobbies, likes, dislikes, history ... anything. Maybe it will inspire you."

Out On the Town (Alija)

Kerra listened to Alija's suggestions, thinking them over as they walked. When the woman pulled her close to keep them from getting separated, the Kelvic didn't resist a bit. She rather liked being close to Alija, in fact. It was just as enjoyable in this form as when she was a feline.

Besides, she didn't like crowds. Though Kerra had been forced to remain in a crowded cage or two, that didn't mean she enjoyed the experience of being surrounded by complete strangers. It didn't scare her, though it did make her a little uneasy.

Each suggestion made Kerra seem more and more doubtful. A shop assistant? Waitress? She had a general idea of what both did--especially the latter--and it sounded very difficult. Not as bad as being in a cage, in some ways, but she didn't think she'd be much good at it.

"We could always ask the people at the office, but maybe you do know, just don't know that you know. Are you interested in anything? Want to learn something? Does anything intrigue you, fascinate you, entice you?"

Alija's words had the girl staring round-eyed up at her new friend. A few too many big words, especially toward the end. She got the meaning, though, and soon understanding filled her eyes instead of blank incomprehension.

"I...like being outside?" The Kelvic suggested tentatively, spouting the first thing that came to mind. It was true; she adored fresh air and the ability to stretch her legs. Such things had long been denied her. The girl stared around at the city now, seeing beyond the people and looking at the buildings that loomed above them. Even cold as it was, it was a beautiful day. Any day was beautiful, in Kerra's opinion. As long as she was outside.

Really, Kerra didn't know what she would like. "I like walking around and doing things, too," the former slave added vaguely, casting a hopeful glance at Alija to see whether she approved.

That second offer, allowing Kerra to learn about Alija, made the former slave's eyes light with interest. She wanted to know more about the lady who had taken a liking to her and was being so kind. "What do you do?" She asked with clear excitement, "Your job?" Then, in quick succession, the Kelvic asked, "What do you like? What's your favorite food? Do you like being outside?" The flurry of questions ceased only when Kerra realized she only had a few questions she knew to ask; after all, what else did she know that she ought to know?

Alija's first question puzzled the girl a little, but she answered nevertheless. "I... like being outdoors? I like walking around and doing things, too," she replied, still a little cautious. She glanced around the city, taking in the sights and smells that Alija was born with, before casting a hopeful look towards Alija. She laughed, nodding. Alija really needed to teach the Kelvic not to be scared to answer "wrong", a habit forced on her as a former slave.

Alija's second offer seemed to create more confidence in her, the girl's eyes flashing with curiosity. She let out a flurry questions, skip in her step and excitement in her voice. Alija smiled, not clearly hearing them. The lady asked for a repeat, which the Kelvic gladly gave.

The first question was easy. "I'm a blacksmith. I forge all sorts of things out of metal: knives, horseshoes, even some metal furniture now and then!" Alija glanced around, realising that they had stopped in front of the Armed Scholar. They had been wandering aimlessly, and habit had brought her here. "This is where I work. I can show you around one time, maybe teach you a little, but not now!"

The second question proved harder. Alija rarely thought about what she liked, automatically knowing when someone asjed about a specific thing. But specifying her likes herself? "I guess," she started, trailing off a little, "Blacksmithing. Yes, definitely. Blacksmithing and fire, the sea and the salt. I like magic, meditation, Auristics. Yes, I like reading Auras." She smiled, then realised that girl might not know what they were. "Auras are.. smoke to fire. Everything has one, and Aurist can read one."

Alija felt a sudden urge to use that magic, and zoned out, taking deep breaths. Focused, she settled on the Kelvic, letting the rest of the world disappear. A dark green smoke swirled around her, and she concentrated on it hard, letting details come to her. Excited the feeling drifted past, and Alija smiled, knowing how strong the feeling had to be to get it like that. Her focus suddenly broke, and the noise of the crowd came back. "Magic," she whispered, more to her self than the girl.

The girl smiled, and Alija realised she had asked more questions. "My favourite food... All we eat is fish! I like fish though. In a nice stew. And yes, I like being outside, if it's not too cold, or wet, or rainy."

They stood awkwardly in silence, waiting for one or the other to do something. Alija started walking, "I'll take you home, show you my little cottage. Talk. Ask questions, tell me about you, about something. I don't mind." Alija needed the silence to stop. She led the Kelvic along the streets, pointing out places as she went along, heading towards the docks, which her house was close to.
