Closed Behind Red Eyes (Sayana, Nephti)

A "reunion".

Considered one of the most mysterious cities in Mizahar, Alvadas is called The City of Illusions. It is the home of Ionu and the notorious Inverted. This city sits on one of the main crossroads through The Region of Kalea.

The illusion of the zith nodded vigorously when Maya said her name. Yes, yes. Thank all the gods and goddesses yes. While she could have started with her name, Maya probably would have fled the first chance she got. But this way Sayana had managed to keep the artist here, in the temple.

Again she nodded in an exaggerated manner at the word illusion. But Maya’s next questions made her hesitate. What could she possibly do to communicate that it had not been her doing? That it had been a cold merciless Symenestra. One who enjoyed torture and games. Even as Sayana was trying to summon some sort of explanation to convey to the artist, she jumped at the mention of the deity of the Alvadas. Ionu? Could Ionu have possibly visited her and taken the form of…

She shook her head frantically. Quickly she raised a finger signalling that she had an idea, then pointed at the red embroidery upon her chest. With the illusion it could have been easily overlooked due to the silky black fur upon her body but as she gestured to it, the red thread work was clear. Upon her chest were three red lines forming an ‘X’ with the third line going vertically down the middle. She began to mime the act of sewing or embroidering with her right hand. She repeated the action several times and also took a piece of her cloak and mimed the same action on the material.

The Seamstress. That was who had done it. Sayana started making gestures to her claws and as she recalled the piercing black talons of the Symenestra. And then she felt a sudden relief wash over her. She spotted Nephti rushing towards them, seemingly having appeared out of nowhere. Quite frankly, she didn’t feel any urge to question the sudden appearance, as this was Alvadas and they were in Ionu’s very temple. Nephti. Bless her little heart.

As the young Eypharian began explaining some of Sayana’s dilemma, the illusioned zith nodded several times in confirmation. No longer quite so concerned about Maya vanishing out of fear, nor worried about finding herself feeling completely and utterly alone again, Sayana spared a couple of glances about the temple. It was grand and looked impressively tall. Did it actually reach such heights or had it been crafted to only appear that way? The altar at which they stood next to seemed to flicker with a myriad of colours. Yet more distinctly was a prominent triangle on the front face of it. A triangle that seemed to be pointing downwards.

Curious, and glad that there seemed to be no obvious tension between Nephti and Maya, Sayana approached the altar and placed a tentative clawed hand upon the symbol. A triangle. Why would it be so bold in the temple of Ionu? She reached out to tap Maya on the shoulder with one hand and then gestured to the symbol with the other hoping that the artist might know something about it.

No, not Ionu. Thank the gods.
But if not them, then who?
As Zith-Sayana motioned towards her chest, Aislyn hesitated. This could all still be… Wrong. She was paranoid, perhaps, but then again paranoia had always helped her before. Trusting your eyes, or making snap judgements was foolish, especially in Alvadas. But, for the moment, there didn’t appear to be any reason for a random Zith to imitate a Eypharian dancer, nor any particular reward. Or any possible way said Zith had actually known who Sayana was, or how she knew Aislyn. But that meant that Sayana- the mortal Syna- had somehow found herself trapped in an illusion that was not directly by Ionu. Who else had that power?

"Not Ionu...” An illusion that affected sight, sound, and at very least touch. Three marks, or an alternative way to cast illusions, though Aislyn had never seen anything like that before. "An illusionist? A trick, or…”
Sayana hadn’t seemed like the kind of person to earn herself chastisement from the Womiyu. She was a dancer, and a beautiful one at that. What motivation would she have for crossing the city of Illusions?
”Or a punishment."

In the midst of her thoughts, a new figure entered the temple. For a moment, Aislyn panicked. They were a Zith and a “human” sitting in the middle of a sea of miscellaneous papers in the front of Ionu’s alter. Not the strangest thing, if she really thought about it, but certainly an inexplicable scene. The girl- apparently an Eypharian as well- didn’t seem to flinch at the scene, though, instead coming straight for them. Before the artist could even ask, she was presented with a name. Nephti. And Sayana- this was her friend? A relative, even, considering her race. Then her words, in quick, broken succession. Sayana, no common… Speakers made Zith.
Speakers made Sayana Zith.

”Speakers?” She didn’t know Sayana all that well. They had met once. Aislyn owed her nothing. The only thing that bound her was her curiosity, and the fact that there were now two people watching her every move.
Turning her attention back to Sayana, Aislyn took a look at what she was pointed at. Beneath the glossy coat of black fur was a very distinct line of red. Strange. Even stranger was the needle apparently lodged in the center of the work. Small, and shining in an azure hue. Everything about it screamed Ionu, and illusion.
A needle, upholding an illusion. Not an illusionist, but an item. A needle that could mold and shape an illusion more potent than anything the woman could create. For a moment, the idea of attempting to remove the tiny thing crossed her mind, but was quickly waved away. What if it worked? Sayana living out her sentence was tough luck for her, but if it did work, and Aislyn somehow had the power to remove such a punishment, what would that mean for her?

”Petching hell, what did you do?” This was a Speaker’s Speech. The embodiment of Ionu’s word. Helping Sayana would go against the Speakers, and thus Ionu themselves. Aislyn could never do so, no matter who was asking. But that didn’t mean she wasn’t curious. She knew the Speakers, or at very least, three of them, and how they spoke. She had been an indirect witness to a Speech of the Serpent, and this was certainly not his work. Nor would it be the Sea, or the Mockingbird.
It was too… Intricate. Too brutal.
”The Seamstress.” It was absolutely the Seamstress. It could be no one else. The Speaker the artist knew the least about, of course. Because anything else would be too easy.

As Sayana moved away, Aislyn was left with the task of how to tell her illusioned acquaintance that there was no possible way to help her. But luck, for the moment, was on her side, as the topic quickly changed to something much more familiar: Ionu. When the Zith-Eypharian tapped her, the answer was almost immediate.
”The revered, the inverted triangle.”
The change of pace was welcome. If there was anything to talk about that did not involve disobeying the will of her deity, Aislyn was all on board.
”The symbol of Ionu.”

Nephti nodded along to what the human said, agreeing that it was the Seamstress. She had never met a Speaker, as far as the girl knew anyway. She didn't want to, not after what had happened. Of course, the Seamstress had always seemed the worse. Perhaps the others were friendly. She had no idea. She had no idea what Speakers even did.

Voicing her question before anyone else spoke, her gilded voice echoed in the temple a little, uncertain with the words. "What is Speaker? What Speaker do?" Common was so disjointed. She wanted to speak Arumenic, but couldn't. Why couldn't she - this wasn't fair!

Sayana then tapped an inverted triangle, the woman answering the question as if she knew exactly what it was. She did though. It was clear what the Zith meant. Nephti listened too, curious. The inverted triangle, the symbol of Ionu. "God of Illusions." She thought back to I, the boy she had met, the one who had taught her the illusions, the magic tricks. This was his temple, so it would be his symbol.

"Does Ionu give gnosis?" she asked, interested. Flipping her hand round, she revealed the mark, the glowing vortexes that marked her as follower of Priskil. "What does it do?" As she thought about it, she realised she didn't know whether any god gave gnosis, other than Priskil. She may have heard of such things, but were they real? Were Ionu's real?

Behind Red Eyes (Sayana, Nephti)

“Petching hell, what did you do?”

The words cut and Sayana tightened her resolve, keeping her face firm and focused. Pride was something that ran thick in her veins and she did not let herself relax or show any weakness. At the time, she had felt justified killing the zith. She had been purging the countryside of the foul creatures and it was just as well to cull their growing numbers. Now… She no longer viewed them as hated vicious pests but nor did she see them as true friends. Despite her attempts to lead the zith of the colony, she never felt truly safe nor that she could truly trust them. For all she knew, she might wake up one night with claws tearing at her throat, and that would be the end of that zith plus all her promises broken.

For once she was glad of the lack of ease to communicate, since it saved her from having to answer Maya’s question. Or at least she was able to stall. It wasn’t something she was even sure she wanted to share with the artist.

Maya didn’t seem to insist on an answer but instead stated the meaning of the triangle without hesitation. The inverted triangle. The symbol of Ionu. Sayana glanced back at it, now giving it new meaning. Maya certainly seemed a rather devoted Alvad. But to what? To illusionism and trickery? There seemed such a seriousness about the artist rather than a playfulness or desire for games. Even the Seamstress played her own games with a sense of glee despite the dire consequences of them.

When Nephti brought up the topic of gnosis marks, Sayana listened in curiously. She had come across people baring marks of the gods but she hadn’t considered what Ionu might do to his and her followers. What did one even do to gain the attention of a god? Nephti had managed it, but that was just a little light. Merely a toy for a flashy distraction. But Ionu… In that pause, she suddenly recalled the intense and eloquent illusions of the Crooked Playhouse. Were those of the city, or of Ionu, or of the marked? But no, Alvads had come to Syliras once and had also crafted brilliant illusions. They hadn’t been as impressive as those here in Alvadas, but they had been vivid nonetheless.

Throughout the conversation, Sayana had been quiet and hadn’t attempted to draw attention to herself. Her illusioned zith form stood near the altar to Ionu as she examined the triangle once more. Could hypnotism convince someone that they were seeing something, or feeling something? Her fingers tapped lightly against the iridescent surface of the altar as she reached within herself winding tendrils of djed from her core and bringing them to her mind. She focused on the feeling of coolness, a chill, and a touch of nervousness. Like an icy length of wire she sent the magic outwards fusing to it a hint of fear and a sense of dread. Delicately, almost caressing she focused on Maya’s back to complete the transfer of cold and foreboding like there was someone watching her.

There was a sudden rush as energy drained from Sayana’s body but she kept herself from slumping and she focused on the back of Maya’s neck to complete any remaining effects of the hypnotism. Her eyes went blurry for a moment, but she didn’t think there was any bleeding this time. She was getting better. For a moment she felt a sense of pride, but after a tick or two she glanced quickly behind her. No, there was nothing there. It’s all in your mind Sayana, just in your head, your head. Nothing at all. Nothing out there.

OOCMaybe we can start wrapping up the plot? I’m not sure if Aislyn will reveal herself, but it doesn’t seem like she will. And if she doesn’t, I’d like to aim for my next post to be my last one.

Behind Red Eyes (Sayana, Nephti)

The small Eypharian- Nephti- seemed to be listening to Aislyn as intently as Sayana had. Curious, perhaps. Almost certainly, in fact. Her common was choppy and heavily accented, but the girl had a curiosity that attached itself to the topic at hand. That made it very easy to change the subject, though it did bring up questions, such as what was Nephti’s relation to Sayana?
In theory, she could be the dancer’s daughter, but Aislyn didn’t know enough about the two to make assured guesses yet. Nor was she planning to really ask. The next question of the smaller Eypharian caught the illusionist a bit off guard- Ionu’s gnosis.
Of course, it had some semblance to the idea of gods and goddesses and illusions, but to jump straight from symbol to divine gift seemed like a stretch. Not that Aislyn didn’t know anything about it.

"Yes..." She chose her words carefully. She’d learned before too much passion gave away connection to the gods far too easily. "Illusionism, I believe." She shrugged, though the casualness dissolved at the sight of the back of Nephti’s hand. It was glowing, an almost warm glow that radiated now only off of the mark but off of Nephti herself as well. What did that do? It seemed almost too happy to be dangerous, but then again, looks could be deceiving, especially when it came to the gods.

"What- rather, who is that from?"

Having given some information, Aislyn felt it only right to ask in return. Though while Nephti took her time to answer, her eye was drawn once again to Sayana, who, throughout the exchange, seemed oddly quiet. Certainly it was to do with her apparently constraining circumstance in which she couldn’t actually speak, but the Zith woman wasn’t even attempting to communicate. The moment of silence was well appreciated, as it allowed Aislyn to focus on the smaller Eypharian, although it didn’t seem to come without its downsides.

As soon as she turned back around, the artist could feel the other woman watching her. Though that was to expected, it was strange with her lack of communication. The woman seemed fairly safe, but Aislyn never really trusted anyone fully, and anyone that managed to get themselves into trouble with speakers...
There was definitely something strange about that. With the feeling of Sayana watching her came much more intense sensations of untrustworthiness and dread. Almost free-floating feelings, attaching themselves to the first thing Aislyn thought to be wary of.

It had, of course, occurred to her that Sayana wasn’t exactly what she seemed. She had been a fairly positive figure on the rooftop where they had met, but that could, like many things, be all an act. Or she could have changed. Perhaps both. After all, her presence brought very different feeling with it than it had before. A sort of aura, except with different feelings depending on the situation at hand. It was strange, really, almost suspicious. Around Sayana, certain ideas that certainly weren’t hers just… Appeared. Feelings, as well. And she still didn’t have an answer for the blood and fatigue that had just seemed to miraculously appear. Or why the woman had been illusioned into a Zith. In fact, every minute she spent with the Eypharian caused her to grow more and more suspicious of who she was and what exactly she was doing.
But, for the moment, she was still somewhat captive, and still rather in the dark.

Nonetheless, the feeling didn’t seem to go away. Someone’s watching, someone’s there, turn around, turn around.
"Do you have any other questions?"

OOCI apologize for how ridiculously long this has taken. After I returned from vacation, it was just good old procrastination, but then I got hit rather hard with sickness. As for the end- I always like for things to come to a natural end, but I’m not advised to ending the thread soon. I’d also like to know what Nephti thinks.

It turned out he did, and they made illusions. Like the city of Alvadas. Of course. The god had so much power here -this was his city. It wouldn't be surprising if it was similar to the gift he gave to those that worshipped him, those that showed him they deserved it. Nephti had a million more questions about it, but the woman seemed uncertain as she spoke, adding "I believe" to the end of what she said. Perhaps she wasn't the best source to learn about the gnosis. What would be good would to find someone who was marked - they would know.

Moving on, she answered the question directed at her, speaking as if she had memorised the little speech. "Priskil, goddess of light and hope. She saw me and she saw light in me and she saw she must help. That I will give hope too." Nephti smiled at the memory, despite the bad clinging to them. Of all her memories, that was the brightest. It couldn't be anything other.

With Sayana's silence and lack of interest, or so it seemed, in the conversation, the woman spoke again, asking if Nephti had anything else to ask. She seemed uncomfortable, Nephti uncertain why. Perhaps Nephti had said something that the woman wasn't comfortable with. Perhaps it was the temple, the city, something completely different. Perhaps it was even Sayana - in the shape of a zith, she did that to some people. She had terrified Nephti the first time she had seen her like that. Except that last thought was probably false. This was too sudden to be Sayana, she had been fine with her before.

"No," Nephti stated, hoping that if they stopped bothering the woman, she would feel less uncomfortable. Then, realising she had sounded rude, Nephti blushed. "Sorry. I think you said a lot. All good." She forced out a smile, folding her many hands over in her lap. "You have question? Or need to go somewhere?" She let her have this escape if necessary. Nephti didn't really have any more questions - not ones that she seemed to know the answer to. Her questions were on gnosis and divine gifts - not this woman's specialities. Smiling again, Nephti nodded her head a little, "Thank you."

Sayana watched patiently as the two exchanged words about the gods and gnosis. It was strange for her to have developed such a calm, but truthfully there was only so much she could easily communicate. Plus, this ‘silence’ had made her notice more, and particularly notice when and how to keep her mouth shut. The artist didn’t seem to react very much to her hypnotic proddings, but there was something just enough to see that Maya wasn’t quite as comfortable as she might have been before. Perhaps it was due to the dark illusions that pervaded the streets these days, but Sayana felt accomplished in producing the chilly feeling.

Nephti, on the other hand, was kind and polite to the stranger. But it seemed like the young Eypharian also had her fill of discussing the gods.

Sayana gave a nod of acknowledgement to Maya, at Nephti’s gracious thanks. The illusioned zith had already had enough and was interested to get away with the company of her Eypharian companion. Like an itch wanting to be scratched, she gave into the compulsion of the magic and reached for her djed once more. Feeling its power stir within her, Sayana shaped it with the driving desire to leave this place. There wasn’t fear attached to it this time, just the wanting to move, to relocate, to be out from the temple and somewhere else. A simple suggestion really. I’d like to leave. It was hardly necessary but she utilized her magic regardless, and the moment she caught Nephti’s eye, she released that drive and desire to the young Eypharian.

As if it wasn’t obvious enough, she gave a gentle beckon with her hand, then blew a kiss to Maya as a way of goodbye. Faintly blood began to well in and around her eyes once more, but she didn’t care as she made her exit of the temple. The magic was sweet and it called to her. Why shouldn’t she have such power over those around her?

Behind Red Eyes (Sayana, Nephti)

The entirety of Aislyn’s interaction with Sayana and Nephti had been rather strange. Though it was not something she outright had loathed, she was, of course, made incredibly uncomfortable in their presence. The duo- or at least, Nephti- seemed kind enough, but the enigmatic way the events had unfolded was perplexing, to say the least. Sayana, on the other hand to the openness of Nepthi, was difficult to decipher. After all, if she couldn’t speak, and her outward appearance was clouded by this illusion, how was anyone supposed to imagine what she was thinking? Nephti had tried her best to translate, but… Perhaps there were some things she wasn’t meant to know.

After all, this was a situation of Ionu’s design. This was a punishment of some sort, though what Sayana had done was still unclear. That being said, Aislyn knew better than to meddle in such affairs. When Nephti seemed satisfied with what answers the illusionist gave, Aislyn nodded at the young Eypharian’s thanks.
"No questions, no." Of course, that wasn’t entirely true. But for the moment, there was very little it seemed could be answered. "Thank you, as well."

Turning her attention to Sayana once again, Aislyn got the feeling the Zith-illusion was satisfied. With the situation, with what answers Aislyn had given, or perhaps a combination of something else, it didn’t matter. However hard it was to read the woman in her current state, it was obvious she had gotten what she came for. Whatever that had happened to be.
Committing the situation to memory, Aislyn tried to make sense of what she had learned. She got the feeling Sayana was not a face she would be seeing much of anymore, though where she got the inclination from was unclear. There were plenty of people Aislyn had met less than twice in her lifetime, and Sayana had certainly gotten herself into something that wasn’t exactly the kind of thing a person publicized. The meeting hadn’t exactly been spurred by the desire to speak to each other again, after all. Though she itched for answers, there were certain things one kept far away from when it came to illusions, and the punishment of a speaker was an example of such a thing.

When Sayana turned to her younger counterpart, it seemed as if she was attempting to convey some unspoken message, like the girl could understand her. For a moment, the illusionist swore the illusioned Zith began bleeding again, but the dark form turned away too quickly for her to be sure. There was certainly something unspoken and unbeknownst to Aislyn that the woman wasn’t telling her, though whether it was out of choice or out of inability was unclear. She was silent as the duo got up to leave, committed to her thoughts. In the end, the illusionist was left much in the state she had begun in: in the temple of her deity, with many more questions than answers.
