August heard a group of gangmembers making their way through the streets. 'Petch!' he thought. 'I need to get this body out of here.' He grabbed the limp, lifeless body by the armpits and began dragging him toward an alley, his spear still clutched in his hand due to rigor mortis. He got there just as the group was turning the corner, hurriedly cleaning the man's neck and leather armor with the man's own undershirt and propped him up in the doorway of a house on the front steps to look like he was sleeping. He quickly checked the man for weapons and found none besides his spear, nothing. The group was just by August as he stood behind the wall between them, ready to kill, but then he had an idea. He turned the corner right as the group was right in front of him. They immediately turned with their spears in hand, ready to kill August on the spot.
"Kill him." the apparent leader said. "What are you doing?" said August calmly. "You're not with us, so you're obviously with them." "You weren't told? I'm a mercenary, a military advisor, a gift from some people sympathetic to your cause."
The men stopped and eyed August for a second. They seemed to be buying it, but he had to make sure they trusted him.
"What have you been doing? The battle is that way." stated August. "Umm, we were told to patrol over by the edge of the..." "THE BATTLE IS THAT WAY!" August yelled. "And look over here!" he said bringing them to the rope hanging off the wall. "You were patrolling this area and you didn't catch the man who got over the wall? There's an assassin in your midst and you failed to catch him! I've been tracking him for the past hour and I haven't found the slippery bastard. Bring me to your leader Kujol, he needs to be wary of this development."
The group agreed, afraid that they might get reprimanded for not doing their job. August was internally laughing hysterically that they could be so gullible, but his face showed nothing of the sort, just the expression of a mercenary military advisor; proud and intelligent. Four blocks later and they could hear the sounds of battle emanating from the area close to the wall, until at last they could see it develop before their eyes. The Sun's Berth and the Ebonstryfe had made it over the wall, at least some of them had, and the battle was going as planned. The group of gangmembers formed a circle around August, escorting him to the far back of the battle, until he could finally see the huge Akalak Kujol in the near distance, he looked just like the description his handlers had given him. They finally made it and August shook Kujol's hand.
"Who are you?" he stated. "I'm a mercenary military advisor, I'm a gift from the powers that be. They wanted a presence on the battlefield. Here I am." "Ah, could I question about your employers?" "No, you can't." "Well then, the battle just took a turn for the worst, we have Sun's Berth and Ebonstryfe over the walls with feet on the ground. There are more outside and we've lost many men on the wall; their people will be free to climb over the walls on the ladders." "I have a suggestion." said August, assassin's blades just three feet from the Akalak's heart... "Yes?" "Pull your men back, have them hide on the different streets coming off main street, then open the gate and ambush their main force when they come in. Then absorb the attack down the sidestreets in all directions; these streets are too cramped for the Sun's Berth and Ebonstryfe to bring their full forces to bear; their numbers will count for nothing."
August had actually given Kujol good advice, and August began wondering what side he was truly on, if any. August watched as his subterfuge took hold, Kujol sending ten of his best men to go open the gates and ordering a great majority of his forces to take up ambush positions on the side streets. August watched, without even needing to fight, and looked as after about five minutes the gates began to open. August smiled a wry smile.
'I might as well be ordering these men...'
He turned again to Kujol. "I've also been tracking an assassin. He slipped over the walls with a rope, he probably climbed the wall and then rappelled down the other side. The assassin is somewhere in the Gated Community. You need to be wary of this."
"That I shall" said the large Akalak, distracted by ordering his men to where they needed to be for the ambush.
August wanted to laugh so hard he'd cry, but stayed in character, still pretending to be a military advisor. |
