[Aidara's Scrapbook] It's Real For Us

Postby Colombina on August 19th, 2012, 10:47 pm

I have both light reading and heavy-ish reading suggestions. Sometimes if I can't commit to a full classic I go straight to poetry. Anything by Yeats thrills me.

As for light, fluffy reads:

1. Neverwhere (Neil Gaiman. Think a darker Alice in Wonderland in the London underground.),
2. Sabriel (Garth Nix. One of the most beautiful portrayals of magic I have ever read. Revolves around a "good" necromancer's daughter who is struggling to find him and fulfill his role.),
3. Sunshine (Mckinley. A cheesy fun vampire story where vampires look the way they should. Heroine talks too much inwardly, tho lol.),
4. The Lies of Locke Lamora (Lynch. Hilarious and grabs your interest immediately. Think Oceans Eleven meets high fantasy),
5. Elantris (Can't recall! A good stand alone book about a princess in a city rife with political conflict against the backdrop of a once magical city now diseased. Very fluffy read.), and
6. Devil in the White City (Larson. Nonfiction about the Chicago World's Fair and mass murderer Holmes that reads like fiction. Slow start but fascinating time period!)

For "Heavy-ish" reads that aren't too dense, and are also pretty short:

1. Heart of Darkness (Conrad. One of the most visually stirring things I have ever read. Dark and beautiful, can be found online.)
2. White Noise (Delillo. Crap ending, but a great yarn about death and pop culture)
3. Great Gatsby (If you haven't read this, you're missing out!!! Also found online.)
4. Spoon River Anthology (Poetry, small town folks speak from their graves. Like an NPC farm)
5. Anything by Yeats. I like the collection of the Swans at Cooley. Sp?
6. Til We Have Faces (CS Lewis. A retelling of one of my favorite myths, Cupid and Psyche.)

I hope one of these strikes your fancy! If you read one, we'll have to gush about it.

(My post preview shows other people beating me to the punch. Montaine agrees with me on Nix and Gaiman.)

Oh my god these are all awesome!

By "Heavy" I didn't mean size. I love, love love love love big books. I meant I don't want to be sitting down to read real world issues etc etc etc... I have to be in a mood for those. I read to escape from the real world, duh.

That flowchart won't show up on my phone *whines* I have to wait for my laptop to see it.

I'm excited, keep them coming!

Lets see... what haven't I suggested.

I've picked books with strong female characters in the fantasy genre to recommend. :)

Kushiel's series -Jacqueline Carey (Read them in order)
The King Killer Chronicle - Patrick Rothfuss (Did you actually originally recommend this to me? ahhaha)
Cold Iron - Melisa Michaels (awesome stand alone book)
Outlander series - Diana Gabaldon (awesome books)
The Lions of Al-Rassan - Guy Gaverial Kay (great desert read)
Black Jewels - Anne Bishop (A whole series!)
Best Served Cold - Joe Abercrombie (Revenge at its finest.. you'll love it)
Dragon Prince Trilogy - Melini Rawn (Awesome books if you love dragons)
A Curse of Chalion - Lois Mcmaster Bujold (This is a whole series but read book one first)
The Stormlight Archive - Brandon Sanderson (where the hell is the other nine books planned? I can't WAIT! *whine* But book one is worth a read while you have to wait for the others)
Cold Fire Trilogy - C.S. Friedman (Its kinda like epic fantasy and goth or dark fantasy had a kid. Killer series.)
Magician: Apprentice and Magician - Raymond E. Feist (Loved these book.. have read them multiple times)

Seconding Jen's Stormlight Archive suggestion - The Way of Kings is an awesome book!

I'd also recommend the Deverry series by Katharine Kerr, starting with Daggerspell. It's fantasy focusing on the repercussions of reincarnation, set in a pseudo-celtic world.

[Aidara's Scrapbook] It's Real For Us

Please forgive any repetition. I quick read.

A few books I consider to be essential and are not terribly heavy. Some aren't heavy at all. You probably have read many of them. Notably, I'm purposefully forcing myself to keep this short and commentary equally as brief. Well, hopefully brief.

Let's find out.

Classics: (Because its like wearing heels with a dress.)

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas -- Absolute must. Dumas' voice can strike a person at corners in the first gulp, but it quickly becomes an obsessive conversation. Don't look up. "Wait and hope."

To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee - Scout Finch is one of my all time favorite literary characters. The perfect teller of an imperfect tale.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte -- The redeeming Bronte sister novel. No need for explanation beyond these two words: sexual tension.

Young Adult Fiction: (A genre close to my heart.)

The Fault In Our Stars by John Green -- This is a man who can write the way an Irish bartender can pour a Guinness. It is easy. It is perfect. It is astonishingly deep without falling into the slump of YA cliche (which is a culturally decaying and incestuous pit of condescending attempts at crack wisdom).

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins - There. I said it. I meant it too and I'm not taking it back. Screw you, self proclaimed hippies who aren't aware of your own pen pretensions just because something launched to even silver screen popularity. Guess what? There's some damn fine screenwriters out there competing for your leather bound slot and winning. It is wonderful. Read it.

Fantasy & SciFi: (I'll squish them too. Peer pressure!)

Snowcrash by Neal Stephenson -- Punk geekery intertube badassery abounds. This is the man who, along with William Gibson (who you just need to go read everything by ever) coined internet age phrases before it existed. Literally. Literally literally. Enough said.

The Curse of Chalion by Bujold -- One of the very best examples of classic plot structure ever written. It also happens to be a beautifully intricate world and excellent little tale.

Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman -- Ahhhhh. Read it again and again and again.

Editor's Note :
This is where Katie talks about George R.R. Martin.

Gun Machine by Warren Ellis -- Don't look now, but the Internet Jesus has made his second coming.

Okay, I'll stop now.

This concludes your transmission from the South.

- k.
