Title: Bouncer (Coils Club); Slave Trader (on the side)
Skills: Wrestling 28, Hunting 40, Stealth 18, Unarmed Combat 27, Wilderness Survival 38
Gnosis: N/A
Additional Info: Shiranssollus was born in Zinrah, but was caught off-guard with two other young Dhani by Myrian hunters outside the abandoned city. One of them was killed. The other two managed to escape, but were tracked for some time. Eventually, the two young constrictors carved out a life in the wild, quickly growing strong and formidable hunters and survivors. Along the way, he and the other Dhani, a female, grew into lovers. However, she suffered the same fate as their late-friend, as the wilderness overcame her one day. Devastated, Shiranssollus sought a new chance at life. He has found that life in Riverfall, working in the Coils Club. As of the 59th Day of Summer, 514 AV, he caught and ate a Kelvic osprey while scouring the city limits for unsuspecting prey, and now wears the unfortunate Kelvic's necklace which he obtained in the ordeal (as it is a nice necklace).

All three work as part of the Kuvay'Nas.
Image
Name: Carohan/Hanlin Garchaw
Race: Akalak
DoB: 34th of Spring, 427AV
PoB: Riverfall
Title: Squad Leader of Garchaw's Glassbeaks
Skills:
Weapon: Waraxe 65
Dual Wielding 60
Riding 57
Leadership 45
Tactics 42
Persuasion 36

Gnosis: 2nd Mark of Evantia
Additional Info:

Carohan is the ambitious leader of Garchaw's Glassbeaks, a Cavalry Kuvay'Nas squad of mild but growing repute. Normally he keeps himself very restrained in the presence of other Kavran and especially his fellow leaders and his commander, but he has an ambitious fire that drives him and his squad to be the best they can. This ambition paired with his natural charisma draws to him a number of individuals who would usually stay well away from each other, quelled only by Carohan's compelling nature. Despite his fire, however, Carohan is a kind if hard soul that takes his responsibilities very seriously, something that is well-known about him.

He was first picked by the branch commander to lead a squad some decades ago, around the 470's. At the time Carohan was reluctant to take up the mantle, preferring instead his old squad with his old friends, but as it turned out so close were they that those who knew him well in his old squad followed him to his new one. The name was chosen early, when one of their first missions took them right by a nest of Glassbeaks which nearly claimed the lives of a couple of Carohan’s men. Yet, overwhelmed and outnumbered, the squad managed to drive off or kill all of the pests, bringing home with them a number of trophies which were either sold or fashioned into badges of sorts for the squad’s membership. Now, whenever a new Kavran joins the squad, it is tradition to go hunting for Glassbeaks to make a badge of membership for the new blood.

Little is known about Hanlin except for his name. Carohan rarely speaks of him, and he is always in private whenever - if ever - Hanlin is allowed control. Whether he is a violent or lazy soul his squad is unsure, but Carohan seems to handle it well.

Image
Name: Rayen/Chelen Rilkeed
Race: Akalak
DoB: 71st of Summer, 468AV
PoB: Riverfall
Title: Squad Kavran of Garchaw’s Glassbeaks
Skills:
Weapon: Warhammer 42
Body Building 42
Riding 37
Intimidation 32
Endurance 24

Gnosis: 1st Mark of Evantia
Additional Info:

Brutish, callous, short-sighted, hot-headed - these words are what most aptly describe Rayen. He does not think things through, preferring to plough forward until he hits a wall or Carohan tells him to stop. The Akalak’s ego is nearly as large as Riverfall, and he boasts frequently of all of the squad’s exploits even though any dangerous encounter is uncommon. He frequently petches whoever will let him, not out of a sense of duty to the race but for his own pleasure. As poor a companion as he may seem, however, he is stubbornly strong and loyal to a fault, sticking his course and the course chosen for him by Carohan until he can no longer push forward. It doesn’t make his normal demeanor and less insufferable.

Chelen, on the other hand, is very lazy and mellow. He could not care what others think of him, and often does not care what kind of state he finds himself in. Though he is less pig-headed than his light brother, he would be a poor choice to control the body.

Image
Name: Sonyr/Alissyr Morath
Race: Akalak
DoB: 92nd of Winter, 479AV
PoB: Riverfall
Title: Squad Kavran of Garchaw’s Glassbeaks
Skills:
Weapon: Longsword 47
Riding 43
Weaponsmithing 38
Acrobatics 35
Rhetoric 22

Gnosis: 1st Mark of Evantia
Additional Info:

There is much that Sonyr holds dear, and it is in his nature to want to protect them no matter what the cost. He is often called a Syliran Knight with better ethics by his friends, but he shoots down any comparisons between himself and the Knighthood, which he respects greatly. Contemplative more than quiet, Sonyr always has eloquent thoughts to say and advice on any matter, which he gives out as often as he sees fit to help his friends. It is easy for people to get close to him, for he has nothing but the upmost respect for them, and especially alongside his comrades Sonyr becomes a powerful force. He is willing to lay down his life to protect what he fights for, which is something few can say.

On the other hand, Alissyr is much more selfish. Sonyr is quite capable, but Alissyr twists that into something to be proud over. He constantly has something to prove, and when given control he will fight with whoever just because. Theirs is a delicate balance that few wish to disturb.

PoB: Zinrah
Title: Dancer at the Coil's Club
Skills: Dancing 50, Persuasion 25, Seduction 40, Wrestling 30
Gnosis: N/A
Additional Info:

Sseynia grew up in Zinrah only to despise everything about the place. She hated her fellow Dhani and their inability to combat the Myrians hordes, almost as much as she despised the Myrians themselves. She manipulated her way high enough to get a contingent of Constrictors that she convinced to depart from the city for less deadly climbs, at least ones where you weren't surrounded by those simply waiting to see a scaled tail before shooting to kill.

Sseynia does not speak of her journey to Riverfall, for she was the only one to survive, but has made a comfortable life for herself at the club, and leaves it at that.

Title: Barkeep/ Bouncer at the Coil's Club
Skills: Philtering 40, Socialization 40, Poison 30, Wrestling 30
Gnosis: N/A
Additional Info:

Weisslyn was captured as a young snakeling and enslaved. He remembers little to nothing of the Spires, only of cages, whips, and cruelty. He became quite the obedient slave to any masters he was given, but developed a skill for poison and potion making, even with the utter lack of supplies he had access to. Using his own venom and a knowledge of plants that he learned when traveling Mizahar, Weisslyn at a very young age, murdered a band of travelers he had been sold to as a cook, and took his leave of slavery once and for all. He had still not mastered his human form when he arrive in Riverfall, but Lllasssnia was more than happy to take the young rattler in and teach him everything he needed to know. Weisslyn is social to customers, cold to those outside of work, a complete puppy dog around Llassnia, and utterly despises Shiranssollus.

Name: Tarik
Race: Drykas
DoB: Spring 9th, 505 A.V.
PoB: Endrykas
Skills: 21 Stealth, 30 Begging, 17 Running
Additional Info:

Born the son of a proud Drykas horse lord, Tarik's mother - Annalise - was a business woman from Syliras come to Riverfall in order to get a fresh start. Seduced by the Drykas Kuril Nevari, Annalise accompanied him to Endrykas and tried to acclimatize to life in the tent city, giving birth to Tarik after a year of marriage. But the proud Annalise grew frustrated by the life of a nomad, and the terrifying rages Kuril could slip into motivated her decision to escape his reach three years later. While fleeing from Endrykas with her son in her arms, Annalise was attacked by a Zith and, while she amazingly managed to survive the encounter, the wounds grew infected. Arriving in Riverfall with a dreadful sickness, Annalise spent the next few years attempting to get her business restarted and making frequent visits to the Gilia Medical Center, barely having time to look after her son in the process. When she finally died in the Winter of 513 A.V., Tarik took to the streets.

But despite this tragedy, Tarik has never truly succumbed to depression. Throughout all the misery that he is forced to deal with, and the stress of constantly having to watch out for the Kuvay'Nas, Tarik dreams big and smiles often, maintaining a tender heart. He lives free and thinks for himself, and while he would love to trust the word of adults that offer to help him, he accepts, with a sad resignation, that many of them cannot be held to their word. He doesn't want to be 'saved' - he just wants a few friends to make life more interesting.

ImageName: Shi'ra Erreka
Race: Konti
DoB: Spring, 438AV
PoB: Black Rock
Title: Acolyte at Makutsi's Tower
Location: Makutsi's Tower
Skills: Dancing (60), Acrobatics (45), Leadership (40), Diplomacy (30), Singing (15)
Gnosis: 2 Raindancing, 1 Oceanus
Concept: Shi'ra is by far the most friendliest person one could meet. She grew up in a family of Konti, although not in Mura. Her origins actually lay in Black Rock. While this may make some cautious around her, or even fear her, Shi'ra is a product of a traditional Black Rock upbringing. Born from a Svefra father and a mother who was a dedicated Laviku follower, Shi'ra grew up in a quite but rounded life. Her first introduction to the sea was by Laviku himself, who marked the Konti as a newborn, because of her heritage in both of his sea-dwelling races. This brought her father great joy, as he thought his daughter would follow Laviku as prominently as he did. And while Shi'ra is dedicated to the sea, she found her faith lying with another deity, Makutsi.

It was the rain and river Goddess who came to her first. She marked the Konti once, after testing her to prove her faith. Passing the Goddess' test, unknowingly, Shi'ra was surprised to receive the Gnosis mark. Shi'ra made it her life goal to then discover who this Goddess was and what purpose she was to serve the deity with. Unable to find any information, past what the secretive Iyvess of the swamps would tell her, the Konti decided she would need to travel to find answers. She did not get far, before landing in Riverfall, where her questions were answered enthusiastically by the clerics of Makutsi's Tower. Enthralled by finding a center of worship for this Goddess, the Konti immediately integrated herself into the religious community. She found more than just curiosity lead her towards Makutsi and it was not long before the Goddess marked her again, this time with a purpose.

Makutsi had chosen the outgoing and friendly Konti for her racial gift as well as her devotion and personality. The ability to see relationships that have not yet been established between two mortals was valuable, especially in a city where the Goddess' followers worshiped closely alongside the followers of other Gods. While this purpose was not revealed to the faithful Konti, Shi'ra serves almost as an unknowing diplomat between the followers of the many Gods in Riverfall. Although her loyalties and faith remain mostly with Makutsi, it is not uncommon to find her talking with an Acolyte from another tower or faith, and almost impossible to find this interaction negative. It is hardly her sole duty to keep the peace between the religions in Riverfall, as the Gods themselves are not at odds, but Shi'ra does help soothe and unite the various faiths to the best of her ability.

Although she is more well known between the faithful of Riverfall, Shi'ra also serves as a good friend to any who approach her.
Konti Gift: Because Shi'ra was not born in Mura, as her mother was, her gift is more mundane than another Konti's. Shi'ra has the ability to see the potential for relationships between people who haven't yet met. While she cannot see specifically how one person connects to another, she can simply see one person may find a relationship with another. Although Shi'ra can tell if a relationship will generally be negative, positive or neutral, the detailed nature of what the relationship between the two stranger will be is unknown to her. Her ability to detect a link between people after a connection has been established diminishes as the relationship solidifies into what it is meant to be. Although relationships between individuals can change, she cannot see changes in relationships once they have been established either.

ImageName: Codin Wynric
Race: Human
DoB: Fall, 503AV
PoB: Syliras
Title: Orphan, Meya's Brother
Location: Streets of Riverfall
Skills: Persuasion (30), Acting (20), Larceny (15), Escape Artist (10)
Gnosis: N/A
Concept: Of the siblings, Codin is the first one you will see. He takes a far more direct approach to getting what he wants. Although to a stranger, he may seem shy, it is not until you get to know him or loose your coin-purse to him that you realize his fearless behavior. Prone to fits of anger, Codin is otherwise a playful boy. Even though his actions prove he has learned responsibility far sooner than other children of his age, his words betray this. Unlike other street urchins, Codin refuses to beg, instead taking a more criminal route to get what he wants, which is not exactly the safest for him and his sister. For a child, Codin is a fantastic at misleading others, which surprisingly, he uses less for stealing and more for protecting his sister. This is another one of his positive traits, his love for his sister.

Unlike his sister, Codin started his life in comfort. Living as a farmer's child in Syrilas. It was not until his own six birthday that his father died. His mother, grief stricken, had fallen into a deep depression. In an effort to help herself and give her only child, at the time, a good life, she attempted to move to Zeltiva. The mother and son were caught by slavers before completing the journey. After being transferred to Kenash, mother and son were lucky to be branded the slaves of a freeborn, simply working in a tea shop and allowed to stay together. It was then that Meya was born. The birth of another child angered their master, and he attempted to sell them again. Codin was only five at the time, and again the trio was transported out of Kenash and headed for Ahnatep. By Lhex's grace, the slaves in the caravans were rescued by patrolling Akalaks. The siblings' mother was now a Nakivak and for some time their life was good. Until, the pregnancy went wrong. When Codin's mother started to understand she would not survive the pregnancy, word was sent to Codin's uncle in Syliras of the children, so that they be taken back home. What exactly happened to the letter, or if the children's uncle simply never made it, no one knows. Their mother, in an effort to protect the kids from the Akalak, told her Talvis that the children would be taken care of. At only ten years old, Codin knew it would be easier to leave the Akalak's protection, having been as cautious of the race as his mother, and took his sister and himself to the streets after his mother's death, under the guise that their uncle had indeed taken them back to Syliras.

Codin and Meya are very much looking for a solution. They have not been on the streets as long as other orphans they met, but because of Meya, Codin does not want to stay there.

ImageName: Meya Wynric
Race: Human
DoB: Winter, 508AV
PoB: Kenash
Title: Orphan, Codin's Sister
Location: Streets of Riverfall
Skills: Stealth (20), Larceny (20), Running (5)
Gnosis: N/A
Concept: Unlike her brother, Meya is a quieter soul. She experienced very little comfort in her life, having been born a slave, and this has kept her mouth shut for most of her life. Some assume she simply never learned to speak, but the child is actually fluent in common and becoming increasingly competent in Tukant during her time in Riverfall. Having never learned to read or write, her competency extends only to speaking and understanding, however she serves as an adequate translator for the other children on the streets in the rare occasions they band together. For Meya, there is potential with how easily she grasps languages, although she does not yet know it. Don't let this little girl's silence lead you to think she will not be as reckless as her brother, Meya simply goes about it in a stealthier sense. Mischief and silence are this street urchin's friends.

Although sister to Codin, Meya's life started very different from her brothers. Born into slavery, she did not experience bondage as long as her sibling, because she was the reason that her mother and brother had to be sold. On the journey to Ahtanep, before Meya could even walk, they were rescued by Akalaks. When Meya's mother became a Nakivak as a result, she found the Akalaks more welcoming than her brother and mother did, and trusted her mother's Talvis more than she should have. Unlike her brother, the toddler was unaware of the arrangements to return to Syliras, and so when they fell through she was not as impacted. When she was five, her brother took her to the streets, and Meya simply accepted it. She didn't know another way of life at that point, since it has been the most permanent living arrangement for her so far, even if homelessness isn't exactly an ideal living arrangement. Even though her brother wishes desperately to give her a better life, Meya is more accepting of her situation, and if anything she refuses to try to change it.

Name: Zeklan and Laone Viharus
Race: Akalak

PoB: Riverfall
Title: Instructor at the Tuvya Sasaran
Skills: Blind Fighting 76, Unarmed Combat 67, Teaching 58, Musical Instrument: Ocarina 45
Gnosis: Wysar 1
Additional Info:

Zeklan Viharus is an Akalak that is well respected within the community of martial artists in Riverfall. A disciplined fighter who is known for his somewhat unorthodox teaching methods, he learned early that being reliant upon one sense too heavily could spell disaster. A venture out in the Sea of Grass to dispense with a party of Zith was all it took for this lesson to be solidified in his mind. Since a near death experience left him in a coma and upon awakening he was left with impaired vision. Rather than be deterred however he trained himself in living a life without the need for sight. To approach him though one would be hard pressed to tell that he is nearly blind.

Laone Viharus, the dark brother to Zeklan exists in a comfortable balance with his light brother. He is of a more humorous demeanor than Zeklan’s reserved attitude but he is no less encouraging to those around him. When not tending to those students in his tutelage he can often be found perched up on a wall or in a quiet place playing the ocarina.

Name: Nahla Seafair
Race: Human, Svefra
DoB: 27th of Summer, 506 AV
PoB: Suvan Sea (Anchorage Flotilla)
Title: Orphan
Skills: 30 Swimming, 20 Sailing, 10 Fishing
Gnosis: 1 Oceanus
Additional Info:

Up until her ninth year, Nahla lead an average life as a Svefra. Her parents were particularly skilled sailors, and often worked as transport for individuals or small groups of wealthy travelers. She had two younger siblings, both brothers; one four years younger than her, the other eight. During her childhood, Nahla quickly picked up the skills typical of Svefra everywhere: swimming, sailing, and fishing.

It was after her ninth birthday that tragedy struck. Her parents --who had always been rather adventurous and cocky when it came to their sailing-- were paid handsomely to take a man from Syliras to Zeltiva, going the length of the Suvan and out of the Faylek Gulf, then around the edge of Eyktol, following the coast. The trip was to proceed in bursts and stops, dropping by many local points to explore and thrill-seek. Because of this, the over-confident Svefra remained too long in the generally unsafe waters of the middle Suvan, and eventually disaster struck. A nasty storm reared up out of nowhere, and by the fourth bell the family Palivar had taken too much damage and splintered from the stress, sinking into the waves.

Everyone but Nahla was killed in the storm and the waves; the young girl, a naturally-gifted swimmer, managed to survive by clinging to debris and with the aid from a pod of dolphins that had been close companions to her family. After being adrift at sea for less than a day, another ship chanced by the exhausted girl and pulled her aboard. Nahla refused to join the pod of the Svefra who saved her, having come abruptly to distrust and even hate the sea, blaming Laviku for allowing her family to drown. So the group dropped her off in the nearest land city, Riverfall, and it was there on dry land that Nahla swore to never again take to the sea. Unfortunately, this promise caused her even greater hardship, as all of her talents were related to the water. After coming to Riverfall, the young girl struggled to learn to survive on the streets.

Nahla, in general, is a rather world-wearied child, not apt to smile, laugh, or place her trust. The loss of her family and the subsequent rejection of her past way of life destroyed her happiness, and as such she holds a pessimistic view of the world knowing that no matter how skilled or important a person may be, they may be utterly destroyed for no discernible reason. Because she no longer believes in the safety or strength of others --for what is the strength of a person compared to the implacable cruelty of the
world?-- she has a lot of difficulty learning to befriend or rely on people. She is quiet and rarely speaks unless spoken to.

Doone was born an only child in Syliras, son of a blacksmith. As was expected, from a young age he helped his father at the forge, apprenticing in order to learn the family business.

However, despite his prodigious skills at smithing, Doone's father was a poor employee, and when the boy was ten his father was removed from his position in the Ironworks. With barely enough money left and their reputation soiled, the family made a drastic decision: to uproot and head to a new city, Riverfall. On the long journey upon the Kabrin, however, the father took ill, and he perished before they could make it to their destination. Heartbroken, Doone's mother completed the journey, and they made it to Riverfall where she agreed to become Nakivak in order to buy herself and her son a new life.

Before she could conceive, however, Doone's mother met a violent end during the plague that upturned the city for two seasons, inverting the characteristics of the affected. Doone never knew what happened to his mother, or who attacked her. He found her in her bed, bloody and battered and dead. Terrified and enraged, the child took to the streets, no longer feeling safe in the city and not knowing what to do or where to go. Rather than remain orphaned and poor and risk drawing the Akalak's ire, Doone hoped to support himself by finding a job at a blacksmith's, but had been unable to find work. As such, he'd been reduced to trying to figure out how to eke out a life on the streets, a daunting prospect for one who had been provided for throughout most of his life.

Doone is big for his age and strong, though these qualities have faded in the past few seasons (Winter 514 AV, Spring 515 AV) due to malnourishment. He's a bright boy and can be somewhat brusque (a trait he picked up from his father), but despite his hardships he still holds hope in his heart for a better life, though that hope is somewhat tainted by a desire for revenge upon whoever murdered his mother. Despite everything, he still believes in honesty and hard work, and as such becoming an urchin has been very hard on him, as he considers begging or stealing repellent.

[Riverfall] The NPC Creation/Request Thread

Postby Kyo on April 21st, 2015, 3:54 am

Also for the orphanage. I didn't know if negative gnosis were allowed for NPC's or if the story concerning it is good enough to warrant a mark. If not, I can alter Japheth's history to get rid of his mark; I just thought it was an interesting touch.

ImageName: Shai Streeter (pronounced shy)
Race: Mixed Blood (approx. 90% Human, 5% Dhani, 5% Eypharian)
DoB: 91st of Winter, 509 AV
PoB: Ahnatep
Title: Orphan
Skills: 23 Dance, 20 Acrobatics, 12 Escape Artist
Gnosis: --
Additional Info:

Shai was born the son of a slave in Ahnatep. He hardly remembers his true mother, if at all; because of that, he's learned to accept others as family, and as such does not even feel his true family's loss.

When Shai was two years old, he was removed from his mother and sold to a new household in Ahnatep. Despite being so young --or perhaps because of it-- Shai adjusted well to his new surroundings, and found himself a favorite among his masters. There was a brightness about him --like a flickering, laughing flame-- that could not be quenched, and while he was small yet to perform many duties, his masters often kept him close out of their fondness for him. As such he learned bits about their interests, and soon adopted them: dancing especially, since he had a poor singing voice, and mild acrobatics.

However, it wasn't to last. Shai often changed hands, found to be more an amusement than a useful, working slave. He traveled with his numerous masters outside of Ahnatep, to Eloab, back to Ahnatep, and then finally up into the Sea of Grass.

There he was freed. A group of Akalak took control of the slave caravan Shai had become a part of
--traveling with his newest masters to be sold in Kenash-- and freed the lot, bringing them to their new home in Riverfall. Shai fell by the wayside, unable to properly care for himself due to his youth and inexperience at being on his own. He began to starve, and would have died had he not met another young boy in the city: Japheth, or as Shai came to call him, Mouse.

The two formed an instant bond, and helped one another through the most difficult of times, taking up the name 'Streeter' to declare themselves as brothers. And so they became. Soon enough the two were inseparable, sticking up for and keeping watch over each other, toughing it out in a city that had no use or sympathy for them. Shai, whose sparkling, boisterous personality subverted the implications of his name, kept Japheth's spirits up, as the older boy was prone to gloom and silence.

Because he was a slave, Shai holds the mark of a tattoo on his wrist that says Minajim, or 'mine' in Arumenic. This he feels no ill will towards; like everything else in his life, Shai has accepted that the mark is what it is, taking it in stride.

ImageName: Japheth Streeter (prounounced jay-feth; commonly called Mouse)
Race: Mixed Blood (Chaktawe, Drykas)
DoB: 79th of Fall, 508 AV
PoB: Eyktol
Title: Orphan
Skills: 27 Shortbow, 25 Fletching/Bowing, 12 Escape Artist, 10 Dagger
Gnosis: -1 Tatani (curse mark)
Additional Info:

Japheth's mother was a Chaktawe who was banished from her tribe as a teenager for refusing to forfeit the title of Abayla. As she had been shucked from her people, his mother was forced to wander from group to group, but she never fit in due to her poor, contemptuous attitude. This changed when she met the man who would become her love, a Drykas who agreed to escort her over the Sea of Grass. The two fell quickly for one another with great passion, but despite this the young woman would not agree to live with the Drykas due to her dislike and distrust of community. With an aching heart Japheth's father agreed to leave his pavilion for his love, but to do so he was forced to go against the direct orders of his Ankal, and so he, too, was banished.

The two outcasts traveled as guides across Cyphrus and Eyktol and soon had a son, and though Japheth's father was a gentle man who mourned the loss of his culture, his mother was wicked and bitter. She constantly antagonized the gods that she had disowned, going so far as to wantonly attack and kill any birds that flew too close, or to attempt to poison or divert fresh waterways. Eventually enough was enough and she was punished by Eywaat for her impudence; however, because she held no true value for herself, only for her love and their child, Eywaat cursed the both of them instead.

The negative gnosis soon stole her love from her, for he turned on her now that he had been marked, unable to forgive her for what she had done to him and their boy. He left to beg forgiveness from the Drykas, taking Japheth with him, but when he returned to Endrykas he was not allowed to rejoin his pavilion. It was as the two were just coming to Riverfall --the nearest city-- that Eywaat's mark took his father's life, when he was attacked by a glassbeak. Japheth was only able to escape unharmed due to his father's sacrifice and the aid of the Akalak.

Because of his curse mark, Japheth had to learn to fight and provide for himself, as others tended to avoid him and the birds that constantly watched and harassed the boy. It was in the city that he found his only ally: Shai, whose bright outlook did not allow him to fear the birds, and who lent Japheth strength in his darkest times. The two boys became each other's family, and it was from Shai that Japheth earned the nickname Mouse, due to the rarity in which he spoke, because of his ability to sense nearby danger (a Chaktawe trait), and because of the birds that circled him overhead.

Mouse will not often speak and so Shai has learned to speak for him. He holds a deep anger towards his mother, who he knows caused all of his misfortune, though this does not manifest towards other people, only towards the birds that ceaselessly stalk him. He is viewed as a negative influence in the city because of his curse, and as such has earned the enmity of many of the people there.
