[Antinous Training Grounds] Let It Fly (Asen & Ehati)

She wasn't sure she'd ever get used to the distinctly military feeling of the facilities here in Syliras that the Order used. Back at the Garrison everything still felt a little like home, but here in the city, Katelyn just couldn't acclimate. She might be a little prejudiced--after all it hadn't even been two weeks--but her heart was most definitely still back in those fields. The redhead sighed and combed her hand through the thick snarl of waves atop her head, then plucked an arrow from the quiver strapped snugly to her back. They rattled as one slid from the bundle, and she shuffled her feet into the position Marrick had taught her.

Her stomach tightened momentarily at the thought of him, but she banished the melancholy as she nocked the arrow to the string of her longbow and drew back. Muscles protested along her shoulders and back--parts of her body that weren't quite used to the stress of being pushed. Katelyn felt the shot ready, but awkwardly, and when she released the arrow veered far to the left where it slammed into the protective wall behind the targets that were set up in a neat row. A gusty sigh escaped her, and frustration bubbled just below the surface. The Squire couldn't quite get the hang of it yet, but that gave her all the more reason to keep practicing.

Shoot until your arms burn, Ser Whitevine had said--her first Patron. She missed him already despite only knowing him for a portion of winter. Katelyn had grown to like his company and quiet method of teaching. Her new Patron intimidated her. He was a competent mage, and sharp as a blade--the former of which both absolutely terrified and fascinated her. She feared it would take the better part of the season to really get used to him.

Katelyn drew another arrow and nocked it to the string. She drew back another shot, pulling the projectile as far as she could draw--until the feathers tickled her right cheek. Kat's shoulders and arms trembled in protest, and as her grip waned she released. The bowstring hummed and the arrow raced away, arcing too high and once more missing the rings completely. It slammed into the wall above the target with a hollow smack, and Kat let the bow drop limp at her side, feeling discouraged and defeated. She hadn't been at it for more than a bell and already she felt like throwing in the towel.

[Antinous Training Grounds] Let It Fly (Asen & Ehati)

Postby Asen on March 15th, 2015, 1:44 am

Asen had come to the Training Grounds looking for someone to spar with. She'd left her coat on her bed, deciding it was more or less warm enough to go without it. While it was only a little more than a week since the new year, she thought she could smell spring in the air.

Although I suppose the floodin' puts a damper on things. An' the cave-in. Aside from that, everything seems pretty nice, she thought to herself. There was a lightness in her step she hadn't had in a while, too. She wasn't sure what it was, but she attributed it to Lorden, the raven-haired knight.

Unfortunately, everyone was busy with their patrons or other squires. Nobody was free to spar with the half-Dhani. The corners of her mouth turned downwards in a frown, eyes scanning the Grounds once more in case she missed someone.

Nothin'. Absolutely nothin'. I swear to Siku, if I hafta pick a fight just to get in some practice I'm gonna be so mad...

Asen swore several times internally, shuffling towards the archery range. She didn't want to work on her archery skills all that much, but she figured it'd be a good idea. There was a redhead there already, wielding a longbow similar to the one the squire had first tried. She seemed like she knew what she was doing, even if she wasn't hitting the target every time.

"Hey," she said hesitantly, "Can you, um, show me how to stand like that?" she asked, gesturing to the young woman's stance. It was different from how she'd stood during her not-really-effective training session with Garland.

[Antinous Training Grounds] Let It Fly (Asen & Ehati)

While Katelyn was brooding to herself and looking downrange trying to think of a good reason to quit, she didn't notice the other Squire approach. At the sound of her voice Kate half-turned, hand on her hip and curiosity etched on her features. The young woman was kind of thin, a little pale--not that the redhead was any better with winter just now behind them--but stood the same height as she did. Usually other women were either significantly shorter or obscenely tall. It was a nice change, being able to look another woman in the eyes. She seemed nervous though, and Katelyn smiled to try and diffuse the common first encounter tension.

"Of course," she replied instantly, not wanting to be rude. Plus, it would give her a reason to keep working. She wasn't going to get any better by giving up just because she was frustrated. "Do you know how to shoot?" she asked, and offered her longbow to the stranger. The other Squire--at least she presumed she was a Squire--didn't have one. The young woman was too old to be a Page, but was clearly not a Knight. She didn't have the confident, purposeful airs that their superiors so often seemed to have developed. Plus, no pin on the collar. "My name's Katelyn," she continued, leaving things open and friendly.

She knew everyone lent a hand up here. That was no different than back at the Outpost. Everyone trained with everyone else, and while sometimes it could be hard to find a partner if things got crowded, Kate had quickly taken to enjoying meeting new people like this. It sort of forced friendships into existence. Or killed them. Either way, you quickly learned who you did and didn't like. Kate had a feeling she'd like this one.

Notes: Such a shame this thread was discontinued, I am very fond of your writing style and would have loved to of read more. I shall have to look out for more of your threads in future and nab them before anyone else can! I couldn't award you any observation as your skill is quite high in that area and I just didn't see enough detail to justify awarding a point. Let me know if you think I have missed anything here and be sure to edit your grading request!
