[Squire's Dormitories] Home Sweet Home (Balian)

1st, Spring, 515 AV

It was late in the evening by the time they arrived at the city, and later still when they tended to their horses at the stables and Ser Moore led her to the dorms she'd be living in for the unforeseeable future. Already things were so different from home and from the Garrison. The further into the castle they went, the more she felt a little claustrophobic. The torches that lined the walls and lit their way did little to comfort her, and by the time they arrived at the door to her suite, she was sweating. There were so many halls, so many strangers, and she quickly found herself growing fidgety.

Her patron glanced back at her a few times and tried to offer her a smile, but he seemed about as out of it as she was. He had a new patron to get used to, and one who was very unprepared for the changes she was about to go through. When he opened the door and warm firelight spilled into the hall, she was surprised by how cozy the room inside was. It was comfortable shared living area, branching off into three separate rooms. One of the doors were open and quiet male voices came from within.

"This is where I leave you for now," he explained and she smiled glumly. "I'll send for you in a few days. Get settled in during that time, and try to mingle. It will help." His attempt at encouraging her didn't go unappreciated, but Kat couldn't make herself feel anything but overwhelmed.

When he was gone, she shut the door behind her and let her heavy pack slide from her shoulder into her hand. A gusty sigh escaped as the weight left her tired, and she went to take a seat on one of the old sofas arranged in what looked to be the general sitting area. A hearty fire danced and crackled in the fireplace across from her on the wall. She listened to the fuel pop and snap from the heat, and inhaled the subtle scent of wood smoke hanging in the air.

When Katelyn heard the faint creak of a door and the swell of female voices, her head turned. From inside one of the previously closed off rooms a young girl strolled out backwards, smiling at the others inside. They were laughing about something, but she couldn't hear what. When the girl turned around, bouncing on her heels and beaming, Kat was surprised how young she looked. A head full of thick blonde curls framed a face still chubby with baby fat, and two big green eyes that looked too innocent to possibly be a squire.

When the girl laid eyes on the newcomer, she made a b-line straight for where Katelyn sat by the fire.

"You're the new girl, aren't you? They told us we'd be getting a new roommate."

Her voice tinkled like bells, and her teeth were perfect. Kat automatically didn't like her.

"My name's Katelyn," she said. "Marks," the redhead added after a quick pause. "I just got here."

"Well my name is Vanessa. It's a pleasure to meet you. How about I show you to our room?"

Kat nodded, rose to her feet, and followed the young girl back the way she'd come. Inside the room things were a little darker despite the candles burning on a table and shelves. The wall across from the door was lined with six bunks, and most of them were full of girls in an intent conversation. Katelyn was horrified to see every single one of them was noticeably younger than she was. The oldest looked maybe twenty-one, if she squinted and tilted her head.

When the two of them walked in, all eyes turned on her. She felt like a rabbit who'd just walked into a den of hungry wolves. Introductions were exchanged as she found her bunk in the bottom corner and tossed her pack inside. The little blonde followed close at her heels, chirping away at her and the other girls like they were all the best of friends. A few stayed rather quiet like herself, but half of them squawked and laughed and interrogated her with feminine determination.

"Just stick with us Katelyn and we'll show you around. You don't have to worry," the little blonde babbled. "We can teach you how things work here in the city. It's probably a lot different than being a farmer. I can't imagine living out there. You came to the right place."

A few annoying giggles from her young friends accompanied the comment, and Katelyn stopped unpacking. She turned around, armed folded over her breasts, and looked down at her fellow squire.

"Listen," the redhead began seriously. "I don't need a posse. I sure as shit don't want to hang out with little girls who can't stop giggling and gossiping like fools. So how about you look for someone less... me to adsorb into your group."

The girl's green eyes narrowed, and if looks would kill Katelyn would have been struck dead on the spot. It was a lot quieter from there on out, and when Katelyn finished unpacking she left the girls to their stares and whispers. A few dirty remarks had to be ignored, but she was glad her first impression of the little blonde had been well-founded. It seemed she'd successfully made a little enemy. The thought made her chuckle.

The few that had kept to themselves during the encounter smiled as the door shut behind her. Once back inside the common room, the squire found herself back on the sofa by the fire. It had died some since she'd been in the other room, and the low light played tricks with the shadows on the ceiling and in the corners.

Your Words I My Words I My Thoughts

Damn that man, Balian thought, not for the first time that day, as he trudged up the stairs leading to the dormitories. He was tired and sore, with aches throughout his entire body. After the day he had, Balian was looked forward to peeling off his sweat and dirt encrusted armour and clothing; his bunk holding the promise of the sweet release of sleep. Thankfully, his patron had some assignment tomorrow that didn’t include Balian, so he had the day to himself, something he was looking forward to.

Early that morning, Ser Borr Ulrin, the Knight that was Balians Patron had taken him out for some training. While this in itself was good, and something that Balian knew he needed, Ser Ulrins methods were……unorthodox. Instead of using the training yard as most knights and squires did, Ser Ulrin preferred his training to take place outside the city walls. “What good is the yard,” he would say in his hardy, resounding voice, “to predictable to be o’any use.” Aside from his venues of choice, Ser Ulrins actual trainings where far from the standards that he had observed other patrons use. Balian would often have to run some sort of course, or have to react to Ulrins commands in some twisted version of the children’s game, Sylir Says. Any combat training wouldn’t take place till after Balian was already tired and out of breath.

The combat training itself was brutal. Being already exhausted from the previous activities, Balian would have to face the imposing man himself as he wielded his great axe. Borr would refrain from attacking outright and causing any injuries, however that was the extent of his mercy. By the end of it all, Balian sported new bruises throughout his body, and was covered in both dirt and sweat. The worst of it was that Borr was always so bloody jolly throughout the entire thing, as if they were old comrades swapping stories and drinking pints of ale. A stern Patron he could stomach, but his Patron’s cheerfulness was downright infuriating.

Finally, the door that lead to his dormitories common room could be seen up ahead. Already Balian could make out the soft glow of the fire coming from beneath the door, marking an end to the days tribulations. Balian could even smile, despite his weariness. A large yawn overtook him as he reached the door and opened it; a loud bear like noise escaping him as he entered. As a result, he was blind his first two steps and failed to see that the common room was not empty.

[Squire's Dormitories] Home Sweet Home (Balian)

Postby Katelyn Marks on April 6th, 2015, 4:01 pm

As the door to the common room swung up on silent, well-oiled hinges and a monstrous noise followed, Katelyn turned with a mixture of surprise, amusement, and a little disbelief. A young man sauntered in, jaw nearly unhinged and face twisted with the effort of his great yawn. He was surely a squire, and so she assumed it must have been a long day of training. Kate herself wasn't all that tired, and even if she had been, she sure wouldn't be falling asleep anytime soon. Even after the long ride from the Mithryn Outpost, her mind was going ninety miles a tick.

Her new "home" would take some getting used to. That much was obvious. When she'd moved into the Garrison, things were very different, but it was still the Outpost. Katelyn had never loved the city. It was nice to visit and convenient for shopping, but it was crowded, loud, and the smells were... unique. She didn't even want to think about trying to navigate all of the districts. An apprehensive shiver ran through her just at the very idea, and she imagined she'd get horrible lost tomorrow.

Suddenly, Katelyn felt terribly lonely. As the door slid shut behind the young stranger, the overwhelming desire for conversation overtook her and she spoke up quietly in the silence that fell over the room following his loud entrance.

"Long day?" she called tentatively from her seat by the fire, and shifted around on the sofa to face him. Tentative normally wouldn't be a word that could be associated with the redhead, but the sudden feelings of homesickness, vulnerability, and doubt had her feeling a little meek.

Your Words I My Words I My Thoughts

- "Long day?"

The words pierced through Balians roar of a yawn like an arrow shot from his very bow, startling him out of it. He had been so tired and so preoccupied with getting into his bunk that he had forgotten he shared the dorm with others, or that they might be taking advantage of the common room. Snapping his eyes back open, he quickly scanned the common room for the owner of the words, fully expecting to see one of the girls that live in the room next to his. It took a few ticks for his eyesight to adjust to the dim lighting on the room, but once they did the first thing he saw was the gleam of a fiery red head of hair. Wait, none of the girls have red hair… do they?

The fiery red hair was attached to fair skinned face, adorned by freckles that seemed to jump to in the dim firelight, and while Balian wasn’t able to make out the color of the eyes in the lowlight, they still seemed to glow. Balian had to admit that the face that had turned to greet him was more than just a little attractive. No, this was not one of the annoying girls that lived next door. Which made sense, actually. The question posed as he walked seemed genuine, something that his dorm mates were decidedly not.

Balian stood just a few feet from the doorway, his words seemingly stuck at his throat as he looked onto the young woman before him. For the first time that day he found himself painfully aware of his current state: his clothes and armour covered in dirt and sweat, the rest of him not to far behind. He reached up to his short disheveled hair and smiled weakly as he finally found his voice.

“I…ummm… Yea, you could say that”

[Squire's Dormitories] Home Sweet Home (Balian)

Postby Katelyn Marks on June 1st, 2015, 3:53 pm

She obviously startled him, and the following looks of confusion then embarrassment on his face spoke more than the few words he finally gave her. Katelyn was well aware that he was probably wondering what she was doing here, and who she actually was. Likely all the squires in these dorms knew everyone else, at least in passing. The redheaded newcomer stuck out like a sore thumb. The newly appointed mage-squire smiled hesitantly, shifting uncomfortable in her seat, pinned down by his keen stare.

"I'm Katelyn," she began, offering a more acceptable and polite introduction than simply startling him from the shadows. "I was just transferred here today, from the Garrison at the Outpost." Silence followed her words, stretching on and hanging heavy in the air. "It's all a lot different here. I'm not so used to the city," she tried to joke, hoping to relate with the stranger. He was dressed in armor and covered in dirt and sweat. Obviously he'd had a long day. Maybe you should shut up, she told herself, thinking he probably wanted nothing more than to fall into his bunk.

OOCSorry for the delay and the length of this one.

Notes: Balian Martell you need to go through and track where all your skill points came from as per Mizahar's requirements. You should not accept this grade until this is done. It’s a shame this thread wasn’t completed, Katelyn was about to flirt (could just feel it!), which I would have found highly amusing!
