NoteThanks for letting me jump in, ladies. This was a fun thread.

The hypnotist felt alone like being on an island. When too many people begin to notice, the push becomes too risky to maintain and thus he watched as the exchange was made. Broken contact and raised suspicion had effectively killed his play. Fortune was not smiling upon him this day so he took hold of the opportunity to create a diversion.

A young man, perhaps fourteen was holding a longspear and observing the argument between the women. The con artist slipped away and stood behind the youth for a few ticks. When the spacing was right in the line of people, the would-be thief shoved his shoulder into the spine of the young Drykas male. The boy’s long and lanky frame extended awkwardly into a half-stumble, half-fall that inadvertently sent the lad sprawling out. He dropped the spear in a failed toss to his right thn opened his arms to try and catch himself upon Merevaika. An expletive slipped through his lips but there was nothing he could do to stop himself. He would either fall into a very intimate hug against the dark-haired woman of=r she’d move and he’d land in the mud.

Either way, the mysterious stranger would use the commotion to slip back towards the city and around a tightly formed camp to a predefined exit plan. Should anyone go looking, he was gone.

Water or Gold

Postby Taurina on December 14th, 2016, 6:02 pm

When stepping away, Taurina felt an unexpected uneasiness wash over her. Uneasiness and concern. The peace from before had faded and many questions moved to take its place. She desired to know what the older man’s agenda was. Like why did he want to find the water when he also seemed so keen on buying water from the thieving Drykas woman? Things were beginning not to add up so much anymore and the Eth’s uneasiness was easily noticed because of her constant shifting of weight and fidgeting fingers going back and forth between twisting her hair and picking her cuticles. Her thoughts wandered, as they often did, and she began to question if this was not just all a game.

’Maybe it would have been best just to keep my mouth shut.’ the Ethaefal did not wish to regret her actions, but things had taken a turn for the strange and mysterious. What exactly was the man trying to do to the other Drykas woman? What did he want? Why couldn’t they all just all go to the water now? Taurina’s hands fidgeted constantly as she watched the man with the woman. The woman looked very uneasy and while Taurina wished to have no sympathy for the one who was trying to gain every last Miza she could from people who just needed water, she did. Maybe not sympathy, but something close to it. Pity maybe.

A new player soon came into the mix. This one, a female Drykas with a baby in her arms, came right up to the female Drykas who was causing all the problems. Taurina stopped fidgeting for a moment, taking in the scene. From what it looked like, this new female knew the first one and actually liked her. The hug suggested the two knew each other well enough to be familiar with one another. Most likely they were friends as strangers and acquaintances often did not embrace in such a way. Maybe close acquaintances on the verge of friendship, but even then… it did not matter. Taurina felt a small groan forming within her as she watched the two interact. There was familiarity between them and the first female Drykas was beginning a conversation by the end. The Eth suddenly did not believe anymore that they were truly going to the water.

Taurina was too focused on the two women and her own uneasy emotions that she did not notice the male Drykas slip away. It was not until the sudden falling of a young male started a minor moment of chaos that Taurina’s focus slipped onto other things. Once the chaos had ended, she found herself looking for the man only to find he no longer was present. She did not see him anywhere. Panic swelled within the Eth’s chest. They would not be going to the water, she fully realized that now and also realized that she had been a fool for so easily trusting the promise spoken to her by the man. Perhaps the thief would have been better to trust. Still a slimy woman, but at least her motives were clear. To Taurina at least, the man’s motives had not been.

The Ethaefal sighed and ran her fingers through her tangled hair before looking around. There were still Drykas standing around needing water as desperately as before. The commotion caused by the young male’s fall had not changed the state of things, nor had Taurina’s insistence that the woman charge only what was fair. The Eth did realize that should could go searching for the water on her own, but that was not going to happen. The Sea of Grass and all the dangers it held caused a strong amount of fear than the amount of desire she had to help these Drykas getting conned out of their money. Someone else was going to have to step up and do it if any justice was going to be done. It seemed this was her chance as well to just slip away quietly, leave the thief and her friend to deal with the thirsty crowd. Maybe the friend would be able to get the thief to charge people fair prices. Taurina wasn’t going to bet on that though. For all she knew the friend was just like the thief, a con-artist using other people’s needs for her own gain.

Fingers slipped through the Eth’s knotted hair again before she finally left the scene and returned to her mare. The fight simply wasn’t worth it to her anymore. While she did not wish to be selfish or seem selfish and wanted to help, the situation had not been helped by her opening her mouth. The other female Drykas was still going to charge whatever she wanted and the people who could would likely pay it because of how precious the water was. The only end to this that Taurina could see was if someone found the thief’s stash of water, but that person was not going to be her. She did not believe herself strong enough to face that fear yet.

Melody’s lead rope was gathered and given a slight tug before the two were moving back towards the way they came. Taurina’s own waterskin bounced slightly against her hip as she moved, the guilt of taking any water before others slowly creeped up on her. In the end, had she really any right to judge the thief? She had not been any better than the other woman. The only difference was that Taurina had also been a fool for trusting the man who had simply disappeared and a coward for not going out to search for the water herself. The shame brightened the Ethaefal's cheeks and she wished to hide away from society for a little while. She had been worse than the thief. A cowardice fool was always worse than a thief.

Water or Gold

Merevaika floundered for ticks before she settled into the hug, Naiya could only hope it hadn't been noticed. She watched the woman's eyes flash from her to two others. Naiya followed her gaze as she took the offered gear. Her eyes fell once more on the man, still hovering close, but perhaps less so than before, and an addled-looking woman with hair like a strider's mane.

Ignorant to the troubles that Merevaika faced, Naiya simply held what she was given, keeping to her sense of surety in her actions. She took a further step back towards Merevaika's side, being sure she could see the woman and the space around her so the man would not pursue her further.

"More, yes, please." She glanced around, but there seemed few willing to depart with coin for the water. "One for me, my wife, and my sister." two more.

She scanned the crowd again, no longer able to find the man who had been the cause for her concern. She did spot two younger children, perhaps not yet teens, a sandy-haired boy and a darker headed girl.

While her attention was turned, a young man stumbled forward, tossing himself at Merezaika. Hands so full of precious cargo, Naiya had no way to help but for her startled cry of warning as she stepped back out of the way.

"Oh! Are you alright?" Naiya inquired as she shuffled about seeking a way to help the two. Hands full of wuepo, wetskins, and coin, she had little to offer either of the two.

Water or Gold

Postby Merevaika on January 4th, 2017, 10:11 pm

All of a sudden, a lanky young boy dived forward towards Merevaika and the woman stepped back in shock, watching him fall to the mud. She looked up, searching at once for the man who had tried to trick her. He was gone. Of course she was. This distraction was classic - she knew it well enough. If she wanted to make a quick disappearance, she'd do something like that too. It only confirmed to her that the man knew nothing, or would do nothing to do with it. Why else would he leave in such a rush, without saying anything, without making his exit known?
He was just a conman, just like her.
Rather fitting, actually. And she was the better one, it appeared, because in the end, she had won.

The other woman she didn't know had also taken the chance to slowly retreat, although she did it less suddenly and she watched her go. Merevaika let out a smile, glad both problems were gone. Hopefully, she'd manage to sell the rest before any more trouble came up. "I'll have the money back, now," she grinned at Naiya, moving closer so she could whisper it, "The problem is gone." She made a sign for man, thief before continuing as if nothing happened.

Passing over the two extra waterskins, she put the politest, most professional smile on her face that she could muster. "Thank you for doing business with me, it is two mizas for each waterskin. I'll give you a discount, for helping and for buying three. Four mizas for you," she nodded sharply, hoping Naiya of all people wouldn't complain, whispering slightly so not everyone would hear. She shot her another smile before looking at the boy who had fallen into the mud, "Sorry about... I don't know why. Do you also want to make a purchase?"

Hopefully, he did, and her not catching him wouldn't make him change his mind. After all, he did fling himself at her. So what if he was pushed? In such a busy place, it was important to keep an eye out for dodgy men and stop them escaping. She considered dropping everything and following his trail. But the money was more important than revenge. So she kept smiling, and hoped more people would come up to buy.

The boy nodded, fiddling with his money and pressing four gold mizas into her open hand, "I'll have two please, thank you." She was glad he was young and naive. He was willing to pay the full price, unlike most people. Handing his waterskins over, she watched him take a quick sip. Who else would take the bait?

oocNaiya I hope the price is okay, I need to knock the numbers off my list and 4 gm turned out to be a nice number. Least she could do :)

Water or Gold

With the man gone, and Merevaika looking far less concerned, Naiya was happy to pass the bag of coins back to the woman. One less thing to juggle, and it was returned to its proper owner. In return, Merevaika passed her two further waterskins, and offered her a price. The desperate mother would have paid double what the woman asked, no amount of coin outweighed the comfort of her child.

Reassured that Merevaika was fine, and laden with water to get her family through the day, Naiya glanced about the people around, surprised that coin that meant so little to them was worth more than water.

She wasn't so foolhardy. Trade, skill, these were the things they needed to survive in the sea of grass. Coin only meant benefit to the traders who visited their city. Naiya was happy to pass it along for water.

"Thank you, Merevaika. It was my good fortune to find you had water." She smiled once more, hoping her words encouraged the others to realize the benefit of the trade.

Perhaps something was amiss, it couldn't be luck alone that found the woman ready with an excess of wetskins, but to Naiya it didn't matter. She didn't have to leave, search for gods knew how long to find water, and abandon her day's work to do it. Instead, she simply could hand over coins for the water and be the better for the exchange.

If they didn't save from the additional wetskins they would now possess, they certainly saved in the cost of time lost searching for another source of water. To Naiya, her time was worth every copper.

She looped the straps of the skins across her shoulder, then with the freed hand she dug in her pack for her coins. With respect to the discount the woman gave her, she did not count the coins aloud. Let the others think she paid six miza, it would only serve the woman who had saved her both time and effort.

She thanked the woman again, then, with a drink from the new wetskin, she departed, her time saved. She gave a wave to Merevaika who, it seemed, was finally having some luck selling to others. Good. She knew the woman was in need of a new tent, and coin could certainly buy her that.

Water or Gold

Postby Merevaika on March 28th, 2017, 7:19 pm

Naiya was a godsend, and probably about the only reason why things had gone well. If it wasn't for her, all her money would have gone to that strange man. If it wasn't for her, she wouldn't have just got four mizas, in her pocket, and she had given them so nicely as well, keeping up the appearance that she had paid what was the normal price.

And she spoke to get others to join. Merevaika would have given her more, if she hadn't been so greedy herself.

With a quick wave to the woman, she turned to the people who now seemed interested, handing out whatever coin they could to try get some water from the con-artist.

Naiya hadn't known that. Would she have acted the same if she had? Most likely not. But what she didn't know would never hurt her. Especially if it was not knowing that she had not only helped a con-artist, but had been conned herself. This plan had been genius, and she couldn't help showing it on her face as she turned to the next Drykas, waving coins and demanding two waterskins from her.

"Two mizas, just two golden mizas each, just for you!" she replied, but knew no one was going to bite. They had been wary enough with their money before, and they weren't planning to spend fortunes now.

"I'll give you two for two waterskins!" someone called out, Merevaika ignoring their calls.
"Two and a half!" came another, clutching a young child and eager to get some water for them.
"Three!" came the final, and it was the best offer that was given. Wishing she was a little better with this negotiation, she gestured them over, taking the money quickly and handing over two more waterskins.

Already, people were trying to get water from the tiny puddles that remained instead of waiting for her to drop her prices. Interest was lacking, especially from those who had more money.

But there was interest, and she had to take it, no matter what it was. "I'll give you a miza and eight, for a waterskin?" came another mother, pushing forward with what money she had. It was close enough - and better than that last person had paid. Before she could realise her mistake and change her mind, Merevaika snatched the money roughly, throwing the waterskin in her general direction. She elbowed a greedy teen away from her, leaping out to catch it and muttering a quick thanks as she hurried away.

The next offers were all worse than each other, and Merevaika fought for the extra coin, staying silent apart from the occasional call for a higher price. "No, I won't take a single miza! It's far too little, far too little!" she cried a final time, batting the crowds away without trying to send them all off. It was a hard game to play - highest prices without losing customers. Thankfully, she had what they needed, which made it all a little easier.

"...mizas." The words were lost on her ears as her eyes landed on a Drykas approaching from the distance. Watch, she knew instantly, and wondered if anyone had told him. The man, who claimed to know her secret, perhaps. Whatever he was here for, she knew the Watch was not a good group to mess with. Better make herself scarce before someone noticed - someone realised what she was doing.

And yes, he was asking someone, there was a point in her direction. She didn't have time to lose.

"Sold!" she cried out, a little desperation in her voice and unsure to whom she had addressed it to. There was an exchange of goods and money - she didn't even have a chance to count her coins, and she nodded them good day, moving closer to Eryunt. With a quick movement, she was on him, waterskins all sold and money in her pocket. Turning without another look at the Watchman, she clicked her tongue, called for Beast, and was off. "Thanks for doing business!" came her call as she rode away, moving roughly into the Sea of Grass with no aim in mind.

She had done what she had done. And she had a pocket full of gold, and no more Watch to worry about.

And if anyone asked? She had simply gone to hunt for some more water, or food, or whatever she felt like.

The Drykas was certainly not avoiding the law. Because she hadn't done anything wrong.

profit(waterskins are already paid for in ledger)

+20gm for waterskins
+ 6,3,7,6,1,1,5,10,10,2,8,5,6 sm (profit on top of inital 1gm cost, determined by dice roll)
= 27gm
